This song is targeted towards the HATERS. In China Lotus is used as a slang and haters called Lay lotus who is like a two faced person. But they overlooked the effort Lay gives in representing China and it's culture to the world. So lay showed lotus and said even if it grows from mud, it's lit and valued, can be beautiful and successful. And that he's called the king of China.

As an Exo fan, I feel the need to clarify this for non fans, Lay is a solo artist and a member of Exo still, he is not under SM entrainment though, and for fans it doesn’t quite matter if he performs with them or not, he would still be a member as much as he is willing to

PS: apparently the word "lit" means Lotus in chinese (but i'm not sure i've just seen a comment about it somewhere before) which is a type of flower that can grow through the mud and dirt etc and still survive so yeah that's why he chose to use that word.
Yes, in Chinese there's a saying "出淤泥而不染" which is the story of the lotus flower that blooms from the mud yet is not tainted.
This is also in response to his haters who calls him the white lotus, which infers that he is pretentious. So instead of avoiding being called a lotus, he uses it to turn the discussion to see a different view of the lotus. Hence why the song lyrics - you can't beat me down.

The concept of this album is Shuang Sheng, meaning twin life. It is about the past and present life of the Hegemony King of Western Chu. Past - as the Hegemony King hence the Peking Opera character
Present - Lay himself.
In the album, the song Jade is a tribute to the Hegemony King's wife, Yuji. The two songs complete a story.
Lay's biggest dream is to establish Mix-Mandarin Pop. The concept is to mix Chinese elements with cultures of others, whether it is modern or traditional. He breaks it down into 3 big general categories: Mix languages, mix culture and mix instruments.
You can watch his new show "Show It All" where he exposes his new un-debuted girl group to girl groups of various countries in hopes to establish a branch of M-Pop through his trainees. In the show he extensively talks about his ideas to bring Chinese culture and music to the world. He is still in his experimenting phase as of current and has made various efforts, one being his conglomerate company - Chromosome Entertainment and another a label of his own D.N.A where just last year they held a music festival of 80k attendance in Guangzhou, Foshan.

If you want to watch more distinct M-Pop music videos, there's one 40s visualiser that was released for the song - Flying Apsaras which is also incredible. Unfortunately the MV did not make the release as Lay had dissatisfactions with the MV production. He has extremely high standards for himself.
As of current he is working with Warner Music Global to bring his newest album to the global market very soon in May or June. You can stay tuned to it.
For the EP in which Flying Apsaras is a part of, the name is "East" and it describes the story of the silk road and the cultural impact and glory of cultural exchange.
Lay has some really big dreams, but he is working his way to it slowly. He started his solo career in 2016, but was already on the move in 2015 where he announced after winning an award for an original soundtrack he made for a movie (with tears backstage) that he would bring Chinese music to the world. Since then he has never stopped his footsteps and his concerts are always a joy to watch.
He has faced many disapproving voices as you've mentioned from people who are on both ends. However, he is determined to see this through. So, we as his fans, (his solo fans are called XBacks), are really glad to find people who could understand him, because not many do.

He's an incredible dancer(main dancer in EXO), singer/rapper, producer, song writer, composer, actor, model, CEO, ambassador of China, etc.. He's a perfectionist/workaholic, ALWAYS working hard non-stop and barely has time to rest... he pretty much does everything himself, which you can see in the credits... he even paid over $1million on this MV all by himself. lol, pretty much Lay's WHOLE mission in his career is to bring traditional Chinese culture through the world through blending it with his modern music. He has traditional elements in pretty much everything. Seconding Flying Apsaras - it's SO AMAZING. I wouldn't say it has the same... epic-ness as this one (no full-length MV), but the song is just SO beautifully done. Also, Veil is really good; it literally starts out with traditional Chinese instruments playing in the street.
Look at the credits💥💥💥Lay's name is next to most of them. He is charge of all aspects of production. He is a master of Krumping( an old skool style of street dancing). His 'Flying Apsaras' visualizer and Dance Practice(perfection pure perfection)is pure ART. And a heartbreaking teaser for fans, because he never made the video because he wasn't satisfied with it. It didn't meet his standards, but left us begging for him to make the video for 'Flying Apsaras. Please react to them 🙏. Also checkout 'Veil', and 'Honey'. Yeah, I'm not sure where that once person in the chat was like "There was an official announcement that Lay left EXO a year or two ago" saw or heard that from, but no. Lay left SM Entertainment, but there has never been any official announcement of Lay leaving EXO, at least that I'm aware of. He just did an IG live where Chanyeol video called him a few days ago, and he was trying to convince Chanyeol to do a song in Chinese lol. I get that it's easy to come to that conclusion, since we haven't seen Lay with EXO since DFTF, but if only there were an official announcement of him leaving the group, then I think people wouldn't be hanging on for any OT9 crumb as long as they have.

Glad that you are enjoying this after 3 years of releasing, haha. Lay (or Zhang Yixing) did have LOTS of great work out there as he is an artist and a performer with an extremely high standard. Lit is one of his best and if you enjoy this I think you would like 'Fei Tian' Visualizer (yes, not an MV because he is not satisfied with the whole outcome so he just release a visualizer).
He often incorporate traditional Chinese elements into his work but his more 'pop' pieces are also a lot of fun since he is a great dancer and singer. He just release a new song 'Psychic' recently and will release an album soon this year too!

An added bit of information, I had to look this up, but this has its roots in the Chinese Opera Farewell My Concubine with emperor Xiang Yu and his consort. He's very demanding with his own MVs, last year he didn't release the MV for Flying Apsaras (you can find the dance video) cause he wasn't satisfied with it, even though from snippets it looked super good. He's really hardworking, I'd suggest to go back to "Namanana" one of my favourites from his songs (and a beautiful MV)

I've asked for this several times, I'm sure others have too. So glad you finally looked at it! If you're so inclined check on the video's reactions it's pretty wild. I believe it was over $5m, written, produced everything by him. It's based on an ancient emperor, thus all the historical aspects. that's the standard set of the Forbidden City that they use in a great many of the cdramas.

I'm quite familiar with Zhang Yixing (Lay) through acting and music. His first acting role, I believe, was Mystic Nine and he was pretty darn good.
The budget is $1.4M, all Lay's money. 🫡 He is still a member of EXO. The last comeback where he's part is DFTF era. He's not promoting with them yet, but he's still a member.

This is a complete “Masterpiece” by an amazing Chinese Artist..Lay. Idol being beside the point to me…he is krump dancing I believe?! I’m older too. 😂 The beginning is an Opera about a prestigious man trying to protect his concubine from being killed. I love this beautiful Art Piece. Lay is Unbelievable in this MV.
I would recommend two different Artists from Vietnam 🇻🇳…Son Tung “Lac Troi” but if I believe there’s sometimes a copyright issue…the other is ORANGE “Chan Ai” ..it has the Opera Influence and it’s beautiful. Thank you for reviewing and reacting to this Masterpiece.
