I would like to share initial start up video clip of my own workshop engine after complete overhauling and deep machine work. We replaced exhaust flanges of both manifold along original steel seated exhaust gaskets, high temperature bolts and self lock nuts. Also replaced turbo exhaust housing couplings over size along machine work. So after all hard work nor a single fume if exhaust is leaking as seen resulting optimum turbocharger boost pressure. +Ching Zen-hua That's probably because the people who work on your diesels where you're from probably lack the engineering expertise needed to understand how to properly utilize and maintain turbocharged diesel engines. If turbochargers were so unreliable,then why does most of the world's major industrial engines pretty much only use turbocharged diesel engines anymore? Most modern diesel engine manufacturers don't even build non turbocharged diesel engines anymore except in smaller sized applications such as with certain specific compact car models,and even many of these cars today usually run turbochargers. Turbocharging technology has made quite a few leaps and bounds over the past decade or so.

    I use to Dyno test to maximum load, hot set the valves and injectors, Make any necessary repairs, and rate up to 6 of these newly manufactured engines 5 days a week at the Cummins Engine plant in N.Charleston, SC None of them smoked as much as this engine. The max smoke that was allowed for a new engine then was 1% of the total emission. This one would have failed miserably. I'm also sure that some truck drivers really appreciated some of the engines I adjusted to 450 HP while staying within the established emissions control standards of the time

      If you look closely you can see the impeller kinda sticking there towards the end.
      Also the engine is sucking in its own exhaust gasses....which are inert gasses. This would make the engine run poorly at low rpm.

    I am offered a Crown Bus with 855 Series Cummins mid-engine Pancake diesel with a 3-stage Jake Brake, 10 speed manual transmission with overdrive. What concerns me though is, are there enough mechanics out there they can handle a engine like this if I need them, also is it even powerful enough to go places, I mean all kind of places, without an hinge or should I stay away, I myself have no experience with engines.

  • @dieselman8v923
    @dieselman8v923 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Here is what I don't get, they don't make these engines anymore or most any mechanical engines. (Other than small engines) So they should be working on electronic fuel injected engines and common rail engines. Then if they want to continue as a diesel mechanic they can learn the old school stuff too. But for now if you go into a truck garage 99% of the trucks that come in are newer electronic engines.

      usaisalwaysnumber1 I get better fuel mileage, but he also has a 30+ year old motor...his truck will burn about a quart and a half a week...all motors are great if they're taken care of properly. I've seen shitty CAT, Cummins & Detroit motors, so it's all in the hands of the owner to make sure their equipment is maintained the right way...I'm a CAT guy though, everything I've driven that has a CAT motor, has always been the best available in its respective class. I drove a Volvo daycab for a year and it had a 525 N14 cummins in it. Awesome motor. But I'd take a 3406 mechanical 425 horse CAT anytime over that engine. Some guys are still running those old CAT motors because they are just the pinnacle in reliability. A little cold blooded in the winter, but those motors pull like they do brand new until it's time for a rebuild.

    Looks like a community college HD mechanics class.... they prob don’t even put exhaust gaskets on because this engine gets taken apart and put back together 4 times a year... hence the exhaust leaks. Guys pass the hands-on part of the course if she runs...

    I've never rebuilt a diesel, I've rebuilt turbo cars, before but seeing how diesels rely heavily on the turbo, At first start after a rebuild shouldn't you maybe check and double check that the turbo isn't dry and that it's getting oil? I swear I heard that one seize up at the end.

    • @12DUDE20ONE
      @12DUDE20ONE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tubo diesels don't need boost at low rpm or coasting the if they disconnect the turbo it would run fine. The turbo comes into use at high load situations without it it would role coal like a bitch. That's because the turbo crams more air into the cylinder to burn with the diesel

    • @losi8ightyew
      @losi8ightyew 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +12DUDE20ONE I'm well aware of that. Turbo'd car engines work the very same way. They all serve the purpose of more power under load feeding the engine more air. I worded my question badly. I was essentially asking, wouldn't normally after you rebuild want to double check the turbos oil feed, to assure its getting plenty of oil when you first start it?

    • @Sinister_Reaper
      @Sinister_Reaper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol the trucking company i work at our goal is boost at lower rpm for low end torque, build boost at high rpm also but that's the horsepower side of it, get the low end torque for the hill climbs, only way to do that is boost at low rpm
