I wish you were in Ohio! We're looking to replace an original (30+ years old) wood french door with a sliding patio door for the reasons you explained so well in this video. The door is solid, well-made and presents no problems, other than the inconvenience of it impeding furniture placement and easy access exiting or entering. My major concerns are the many problems that often arise with the workmanship involvement with replacement of an existing door. Horror stories abound in reviews about poor installation, leaking, poor seals, foggy windows, complicated warranties, and unscrupulous pricing - to name a few! Makes a homeowner think twice about replacing a good -- but somewhat inconvenient product -- only to run into unanticipated installation, warranty and product failures (like so MANY problems identified in online reviews). Many thanks for your You Tube videos that empower us with KNOWLEDGE of the product and the process of buying windows and doors! I agree with you that KNOWLEDGE is power when it comes to home improvement projects!

The track height will be dictated by the flooring height and how much overhang you have on your patio. If you do not have much of an overhang, you will want a higher threshold to prevent water from coming inside.
We are replacing our builder grade sliding glass patio door. We want one of the doors with the larger rollers you showed in the video. What brand of door should we be looking at? We are looking at Pella and Marvin, but not much information to be found about the size of the rollers. Not sure what brands we have here in Denver, CO. Thank you.
Great video. You are the tops! I'm looking to substitute my old sliding door (one fixed and one sliding panel) but I need one with a low effort to open or close. Do you happen to know the maximum effort allowed by codes or average in the industry? I have an older person living with us and she can't do a lot of effort to open one. My neighbor has one that needs considerable effort and even I have a problem. He has no idea of what effort has to be exerted. This would be very useful to add to your videos and would surprise others that have older relatives or disabled family members. Any particular brand for budget limited persons?
Can you recommend a patio door with a low threshold or flush. We had a NT patio door put in and the threshold is a tripping hazard waiting to happen. Our old patio door the threshold was flush and we needed that because our as you pass thru the patio door there is a small step down to our garden room. We need to find a solution either it being us buying a new patio door, this door is only 2 months old or some time of ADA solution that allows us to step on the threshold without the guide for the door sticking up and making stepping on the threshold uncomfortable. Our sales man says he doesn't know of any doors that have low or flush threshold, quite disappointed with him right now. Any help you can suggest will be appreciated.
NT doesn't actually make their own sliding door. It's made by another manufacturer for them. I've never seen the door something can't say whether or not it's higher than a typical door. Can you go to a few showrooms and compare it to what they have? You might also consider a transition board that would slope upwards to the threshold to reduce the chance if tripping. I'm guessing you probably have a tile floor. Tile is much thinner than wood. It could be that their door was designed primarily for wood flooring. All the best, Jeff

Hi. I am so so glad I came across this video. Very nice presentation and very informative. I was going to go with the Pella from my local Lowes, but I do want a good quality door without breaking the bank. They only carry the 150 series in the store and not the width I want it was also pretty hard to slide. Which brand would you suggest for a 8ft wide budget friendly, small frame, decent quality door? Is the Pella 250 agood option?
I’ve learned so much watching your videos. We are in the planning phase of custom home build. And despite the “custom” word, we are on a budget. We are at 8500 ft in Colorado and requirement is 0.32 U for county. Windows are somewhere I do want to spend money and insulate as best as possible. So… what do you recommend for a slider?
I think the best thing you could do is find a great window company near you. I did start a website to help people find someone. Finding someone in your area that understands the local governance, would be very helpful. The only way to know if you can achieve those numbers is to have someone run some calculations and their software program to determine what products would be suitable and which ones will not pass. Very nice video's! If you were in my area, I would buy from you! I live in the Portland, Oregon area and I need two new sliding doors for my patio. I used to sell windows for Renewal by Andersen but would never buy them for myself......Too expensive and I don't want wood framed sliders here as there is way too much moisture in the air. Also, I do not think that Fibrex is strong enough for sliders. With all this said, what brand would you recommend for high moisture areas? Thank you!
@@HoustonWindowExperts Thank you so much for the fast response. Just a follow-up question: Fiberglass is fine with me but I'm also wanting the best running gear (wheels) that I can find. I would suggest you look into the Marvin family of products. They're going to be more expensive but they will be terrifically efficient, operate well, and last a very long time.
Just found your videos and they are excellent, thank you! Which companies/manufacturers provide the larger roller sizes please and are they an optional when selecting doors?
It's going to vary by brand. You're better brands will offer more options based on weight and size of the panels. Thank you for watching and your comment.

That's going to depend on the manufacturer. I'd say at least three months as of today for most brands. Check out JeffsList.com for a great door company near you.
Door handing is always determined from the outside looking in. A door where the left panel slides would be called an X/O. If the panel slides from right to left, it would be an O/X. The "X" panel is always the operable panel.
I do not know much about that. I've read some things that discuss it but nothing solid that I can see. Do you have any information you would like to share?

I actually prefer sliding doors over French doors any day. They look nicer, they work better, and you get more glass. I think you're going to like that product!
Does the Pella Reserve Contemporary slider come with a “zero/flush” threshold like seen there with the Fleetwood? Also, which of the top brands make a lift and slide doors besides Marvin. (I.e. does Pella, Andersen, Quaker, Fleetwood, Euro-wall)? Thanks
Shane, thank you for watching and your question. I am not sure about the Pella options for a flush threshold. I'm just not familiar with that product. Andersen, Kolbe, and Sierra Pacific offer some very nice Lift and Slide doors. Let me know what you decide on, please.
I'm not familiar with Eco Sky. I am very familiar with Provia and know that they make a very good product. Soflite is also good but I don't have a lot of experience with them on a personal level. I wish I could be of more help.
Great video a few questions 1-what are the size of the first two doors 2-we are in New York City can you recommend someone? Thanks for this great video
Jeff, love your videos and I have watched and "liked" way over half of your videos. I am subscribed and I used Jeff's list. There are for sure many manufacturers out there. For sliding patio doors, how would you rate the following: Amsco, Anlin, Simonton, Anderson, and Pella?
Is there another company 1 step down from fleetwood? I like their 3070t (3 panels). Is there another company offers similar? Thank you Jeff! Subscribed!
Thank you so much for watching! Aluminum sliding doors can be painted but I would strongly recommend against it. Once you start painting aluminum you have to keep painting it every year or two. It's hard to get paint to stick to a metal surface. I would look for a product that is in the color you like or I would find a paintable product, like fiberglass.
Hi Jeff, I have seen several of your videos showing Fleetwood sliders-very impressive. Do you carry La Cantina sliders? How do they compare? I love oversized rollers on Fleetwood but prefer interior wood clad on La Cantina. I see a-lot of bad reviews on Fleetwood customer service lately so struggling to make a decision. Appreciate your advice
Is the Milgard aluminum door in demonstration black or dark bronze? Can’t find it in black on their website. Looking for a black minimal 4 panel bi-part sliding door in the low to mid-range price. Not really wanting vinyl. Is Milgard or Quaker Modernvu less expensive? Thank you.
Great video as always! I’m shopping to install a roughly 11’x7’ four panel slider in our dining room. Im weighing between Milgard Ultra and Trinsic lines. Do you have any pros/cons comparing those two? Is the Ultra (fiberglass) worth the extra money in your opinion on such a large sliding door? We are going with black, so durability of finish is important to me. Thanks.
The fiberglass product would be the best between those two. However, I usually do not make a door four panels wide until it gets past 15 ft in width. A four panel door in that size would have very narrow pass-throughs when you open one door. I think you'd be better off with a three panel door anytime you're not over 12 to 15 ft.
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for the insight. That makes sense. But looking at the brochure, it looks like the widest slider Milgard offers in Ultra is 12’. They offer 16’ on the Trinsic.
I want to do a wide sliding door for a window wall facing the lake, but my contractor strongly recommends against it because he said the sand will get into the track will ultimately ruin it, and because of the high winds off the lake in the winter (that is not ideal for a sliding door). What are your thoughts? What would you recommend?
I believe that all doors are going to require maintenance when it comes to their track. I guess the question is how willing are you to try to keep it clean.
Ultrex by Marvin and Impervia by Pella are great products and made from real fiberglass. Fibrex is not a fiberglass product. It is good but cannot be categorized in the same zip code as true fiberglass.
Thanks for the quick reply. How do these products hold up in a sliding door application? I was thinking along the lines of Marvin Essential and Andersen 100 Series sliding patio doors.
Bob, thanks for watching and your comment. I have several other videos that discuss those factors and their importance when purchasing products. Unfortunately, if I shared everything I would like to talk about in every video, they would be twice as long as they are, and they're already very long.
I have seen Dako at the builder's show. I like it but I until they have better support for service and warranty work in the US, I'm not planning to offer it to my clients. For me, having support available in a timely manner is critical.
What are your thoughts on the “folding doors” or even the newer “independent single panel sliding & swing open” doors? They’re in high demand in southern california & all claim to be reliable and efficient but would love to hear your thoughts or what to look for?
Houston Window Experts A video would be awesome- there’s a lot of new manufacturers concentrating on JUST the single pane version that allows multiple options (gaps between, some swung out with other still in place, etc). There’s anything from DIY only vendors to the more traditional white glove install so its crazy trying to figure out what points are important to consider. thanx for the lighting fast supply!
Houston Window Experts Since its such a new concept my regular window & door place wont touch um yet (they’re old school but extremely knowledgeable so I’ve been avoiding the option for client projects)
all I want to know is the price for thye door, I want. I do not want to come to a showroom or have to appt for someone to come to mu house. There is a price which is modified by a few dollars +, I dont care I just want the basic price. I have never met any of these folks that would just quote a price. They have to talk you into spending huge $ on whatever they are selling. UGH

Shane, thank you for watching and your question. I am not sure about the Pella options for a flush threshold. I'm just not familiar with that product.
Andersen, Kolbe, and Sierra Pacific offer some very nice Lift and Slide doors. Let me know what you decide on, please.
Can you please compare the companies Soflite Eco sky and Provia endure patio doors?
I'm not familiar with Eco Sky. I am very familiar with Provia and know that they make a very good product. Soflite is also good but I don't have a lot of experience with them on a personal level. I wish I could be of more help.
Great video a few questions
1-what are the size of the first two doors
2-we are in New York City can you recommend someone?
Thanks for this great video
The big doors?
In your opinion, which brands slide very easy that is less expensive than Fleetwood? Pella? Windsor? Thank you!!!!
Yes, I'd say that Quaker is the best after Fleetwood and then Pella and Windsor.
Jeff, love your videos and I have watched and "liked" way over half of your videos. I am subscribed and I used Jeff's list. There are for sure many manufacturers out there. For sliding patio doors, how would you rate the following: Amsco, Anlin, Simonton, Anderson, and Pella?
Amsco and Pella are at the top of that list in my opinion. Thank you for watching!!
I live in Kentucky and I want to buy your sliding doors. Do you ship to here? Thanks
Sorry, we only service Houston Texas area. Please check out Jeff'sList.com we may have someone in your area that we can recommend.
Is there another company 1 step down from fleetwood? I like their 3070t (3 panels). Is there another company offers similar? Thank you Jeff! Subscribed!
Check out Quaker or Euro-Wall. I have videos of both.
Does Milgard's aluminum sliding door come in custom sizes for retrofit? Is it paintable? Love your videos!
I don't offer La Cantina. Check out my o

Do you guys battle thermal twisting with aluminum products in your area?
Thanks for your question. We have only seen it on really large doors. Many brands now offer a stiffer meeting rail to prevent this.
Thank you.
It's actually dark dark bronze. The Quaker is much nicer.
Do any of those come with screen doors?
Yes, they all do.

I do have room to go wider than 12’, but maybe the 3 panel is better
If all you need is 11 ft, doesn't that solve your problem?
I want to do a wide sliding door for a window wall facing the lake, but my contractor strongly recommends against it because he said the sand will get into the track will ultimately ruin it, and because of the high winds off the lake in the winter (that is not ideal for a sliding door). What are your thoughts? What would you recommend?
I believe that all doors are going to require maintenance when it comes to their track. I guess the question is how willing are you to try to keep it clean.
What are your thoughts on fiberglass (Ultrex) and composite (Fibrex) sliding doors?
Ultrex by Marvin and Impervia by Pella are great products and made from real fiberglass. Fibrex is not a fiberglass product. It is good but cannot be categorized in the same zip code as true fiberglass.
Thanks for the quick reply. How do these products hold up in a sliding door application? I was thinking along the lines of Marvin Essential and Andersen 100 Series sliding patio doors.
The Marvin door is going to be much better. The Anderson door is very nice though.
you didn't mention anything about the glass and insulation from the cold and heat
Bob, thanks for watching and your comment. I have several other videos that discuss those factors and their importance when purchasing products. Unfortunately, if I shared everything I would like to talk about in every video, they would be twice as long as they are, and they're already very long.
@@HoustonWindowExperts ok I'll try and find those videos. Thanks Jeff
You're welcome
I buy my sliding doors from Dako. I like Your presentation though :)
I have seen Dako at the builder's show. I like it but I until they have better support for service and warranty work in the US, I'm not planning to offer it to my clients.
For me, having support available in a timely manner is critical.
@@HoustonWindowExperts Very fair point. Thanks :)
What are your thoughts on the “folding doors” or even the newer “independent single panel sliding & swing open” doors? They’re in high demand in southern california & all claim to be reliable and efficient but would love to hear your thoughts or what to look for?
Hi, we also offer those styles. Maybe I can make a video about that soon. I think they are great products.
You lose a lot of glass with folding door systems, and usually end up with more panels.
@@shrekylou bi folds are nice for kitchen to outdoor living spaces where a pocket/multi slide isn’t realistic.
I can remember my dad using a blow dryer to get a frozen aluminum sliding door open. He ended up cracking the glass. 😞
Lol... Those were the good old days!
all I want to know is the price for thye door, I want. I do not want to come to a showroom or have to appt for someone to come to mu house. There is a price which is modified by a few dollars +, I dont care I just want the basic price. I have never met any of these folks that would just quote a price. They have to talk you into spending huge $ on whatever they are selling. UGH
I get it... Have you tried Home Depot or Lowe's yet? If you're looking at a standard size door without installation it's easy to get pricing.
Sadly I went through Lowes and ended up with PGT/CGI doors. What an absolute mess this has been for the last 6 months. So sorry I made that choice!
That sounds awful 😞
@@HoustonWindowExperts 6 months of clowns as installers. Folks...steer clear of Lowes and HD for these jobs. Go to a solid local contractor who knows the business
Agreed
would of been nice to shown more glass options; oa , surface 1,2,3,4 or 1,2,3,4,5,6
Jeff, thank you for watching. This video is less about glass and more about doors. I do have a video devoted to Glass and Low-e coatings
You lost me at "If you've ever been to Beyonce's house or Michael Jordan's house..." 😂😂😂
You haven't been there yet?
Is Milgard out of business?
Milgard is not available in Texas now but they are still in business.
Fleetwood sounds expensive as fuck!
It's pretty expensive. They have had a lot of issues lately so we dropped them as a vendor. The quality is still there, but they are making a lot of shipping and production mistakes.
