What I learned really helps me focus are ´focussed distractions´. These are distractions that don't take a lot of attention, but top my basic work task up to the perfect level of demand vs skill to get in a state of flow. Best example for me are nature videos with music but without voice on my secondary screen. For example Moving Art on Netflix. Unfortunately there aren´t that many video's like those around. If someone has a good alternative, please let me know.
Yes to all of these. It's even more difficult for me right now. I recently resigned my job due to my adhd + the environment affecting me. Yet it helped me have structure and discipline. Now it's a struggle to apply and call back to get interviews. 😑
Thank you for sharing. I hope you find a position that is more fulfilling and a better fit. Take it one interview/application at a time. Best of luck to you.
My biggest distraction is anticipating distractions. The dread of having a smooth work flow being inevitably disrupted is draining and fatigue inducing. No matter how much I explain the need for uninterrupted focus, I'll still get calls followed by "oops! I forgot. Well anyways..." or "so what are you doing?" If I don't have the blasted phone nearby, I'll surely hear later "what if we have an emergency?? Why is it so hard to just answer??"
Yes, absolutely. The social normal has transformed to be "be ready all the time for anything anytime". And that just doesn't work with productivity. Using techniques like the pomodoro method could be a nice middle ground, get the phone away from you for the 25 minutes of work, and for 5 minutes (not longer) respond to any "emergencies" but usually those things can wait until a full cycle of the pomodoro method. Thanks for sharing!
