About the Talk:
In seeking to understand present day Pakistan’s alienation from the rational sciences, we shall explore Indian Muslim attitudes towards modernity and science starting from Moghul days, their widening acceptance in the years after 1857 (spearheaded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan), and subsequent rejection epitomized by Allama Iqbal.
About the Speaker:
One of Pakistan’s most celebrated academics, Pervez Hoodbhoy is a world renowned nuclear physicist, prominent activist, as well a distinguished professor at Forman Christian College and the Quaid-e-Azam University. He has served as a professor at the likes of Carnegie Mellon, LUMS, and MIT from where he obtained multiple degrees eventually leading to a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. Bold and unapologetically progressive, Pervez Hoodbhoy is an advocate of freedom of speech. A regular contributor to dawn.com, he has also written for The Express Tribune as well as The New York Times on topics ranging from religion to education.

The basic nature of the Hindu is to question and debate, it is not governed by the notion of Obedience to Authority. There are so many sects and developmental aspects to religious experience, from Vedant or Yoga or Puranas. You cannot call it singular. It is pluralistic, and seeks to know. It continues as a seeking the ultimate or self realisation. So we have top scientists with a personal belief systems, Organised faiths lose the capacity to absorb new ideas. Hats off to Prof Hoodbhoy.
Parvez Hoodbhoy is a gem... one of the few free thinkers left in Pakistan. I think he is very brave to voice some of his opinions, but even he has to be careful not to cross some lines otherwise he will be charged with apostacy and blasphemy.

The Allama talks about Zeno's Paradox, which shows that Logic is incompatible with Math, and that is true if the Professor only studied Zeno's Paradox. Zeno Paradox goes like so if I want to travel 10 meters, I can divide it in half, so the answer would be 5 meters, that divided in half would be 2.5 meters, and so on. So if I keep walking half the distance of the remaining distance I can never reach the end, hence according to math space is infinite. A finite thing is infinite, which is illogical.

Nalanda , Takshashila or Taxila had the largest universities long before Muslim invasion of India. The concept of mathematics , Astronomy and other forms of Sciences. Medical Sciences evolved from the Vedas.Even today Vedic Mathematics is being discussed in IITs.

Was shocked to see how the audience has zero knowledge about pre-islamic sub-continent. The Indian Numerals are today used worldwide in mathematics, concept of zero came from here, Aryabhatta who is an indian first determined that the earth revolves around the sun, the first plastic surgery was done here by Susruta and countless more scientific breakthroughs have come from own ancestors.

Knowledge and Wisdom are two entirely different entities. The former is vacuous without the latter. Every wise man is knowledgeable but not every knowledgeable man is wise. Our dear Professor has bags of knowledge but he still has to attain some wisdom. I am sure he has enough capacity to reach that goal. All the best !!
P.S.: Before commenting on Imam Al-Ghazali and Iqbal one must first possess near expert proficiency in Persian, Arabic, and Urdu. It would be a proper scientific approach, the one propounded here by Mr. Hoodbhoy. Because only then one would understand that terms like فکر، عقل، شعور، دانش، تدبر must not be understood interchangeably. And if this sounds too much then please continue having fun in the dream resort of intellectual laziness.

Dr. Pervez hoodbhoy is a great, bold and free thinker, who should be applauded and supported. However, he is mistaken that true religion is opposed to science. Both spirituality and science seek truth in different ways. While Dr. Goodbhoy rightfully seeks separation of religion and politics, he himself identifies with only Muslim history, and not pre-Islamic history of India. This is sheer hypocrisy. Hopefully, Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy will study and appreciate the rich history of science and technology in India.

I'm from india though I have to say that he got the interpretation of the poem at the last completely wrong, it never says develop yourself without knowledge or reason. As Iqbal got his scientific acumen gone astray, this scientist got Iqbal's poem the same way.. otherwise I'm a fan of this guy.
