Nobody ever stops to realise how much time and effort people put into their video's. well done Motor Trend!
Thanks, David! We appreciate that!
I do appreciate the time and effort Motor Trend puts into their videos, that's why I subscribed to this channel but I sincerely hope there's something better than this emerging from this exercise.
***** You're correct. They're big boys at MotorTrend and they can take a little criticism. Maybe the next video will vindicate them. :-)
Have faith, NZsarge1. We're not known for letting our viewers down.
Motor Trend Channel No Worries, did you film a video on the Chevy ss you tested? I would love to see a track video.
2 professional race car drivers.
100 ***** cameras.
And the all new Volkswagen GTI.
*Watch the Golf GTI Battle at the Track*
#Volkswagen #GTI #GoPro Randy Pobst #GolfGTI
Why are we watching the car with 100 GoPros instead of the footage the cameras are taking?
Thought it would be amazing but turned out to be the dumbest idea ever.
It's neat, Probably really weird to edit. How do you configure, start, stop, and download footage from 100 cameras? I'd like to see a behind the scenes technical side of this.
It'd be nice if you actually used some more of the gopro footage isn't that the whole point
I think the point of these videos is to advertise the ALL NEW 2015 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI !!!
The 100 GoPro's didn't really seem add anything to the video, best thing about this video was probably the blow off sounds lol
Multiple GoPros are for Bullet Time effect. They have the cameras all shooting 1 frame off of eachother so they can quickly switch between multiple POVs and create a Bullet Time effect. It's a pretty cool technique that costs a bit less than having a RED camera and is a lot less risky to strap onto a vehicle at high speeds.
TonyIsGaming
Did you see any bullet time effect in the video ?
Plus look how they're positioned, they're not really well aligned, it wouldn't really work for bullet time.
i thought i would see the shots of a 100 gopros and not one shot with 100 gopros in it.....
Hheheheh so true
And the point is?
That was awesome! Cool video guys!
Tess Tickles You've obviously never driven a Golf - they're a hell of a lot more fun than you'd think.
I don't live in Germany and where I live not a lot of people have them. I never stated they were "special." I stated they were more fun than people give them credit for.
A standard Golf and a Golf GTI are not even comparable in driving. Similar looks, but that's it.
golf 1-2 had fun GTi, after that they just heavy and silly :( And i owned a golf, golf 3 had it for 2 months... It was the most boring car i ever driven!! it feel like a good car but damn... Nothing special or exiting about the car!
So, you owned a Mark 3 and base your judgements on that?
I understand they're not for everyone but I own a Mark V and I prefer that to a focus or civic or another "hot hatch" that I could've bought here.
haha no xD i have tested the newer as well :) I havent tried the R yet :) Well dont get me wrong! they are great cars, but i dont like them thats all. Maybe they are so good they get boring? Like Clarkson said, an fiat abarth isnt as it was before, it was crazy and didnt give a F about nothing. The golf MK1-2 is and till now the best hot hatch ever. I will test a ford focus RS and see if it as good as they say. And i liked fords but they are crap cars but fun to drive!
This fails to impress me. Whats the point of having 100+ GoPros when you only use 15 different angles? I just didnt get the "wow" feeling I was expecting from the teaser video. Hopefully you will step up your game!
point is you have should have more footage than you need and chose the best.
The point is, "Buy a new Golf GTI and get a free GoPro"...
TheSuperMotoHooligan You should have plenty of footage, but you should be judicious in the number of cameras used and their placement. Every angle should be valuable to the finished product. What seems to be going in here is some intern pitched the idea because they thought it would be cool. Ten cameras with more creative placement and editing would have yielded a more interesting video. Why aren't they using the slow motion video capabilities? This is why I love the DRIVE network more. Much greater production value.
SirWasssabii I'd like it the other way around lol
Johan ousback Shit, I'll take four! xD
They are only Golf's. What's the big deal. I watch this show to see cars I can't afford. Plus whats the Go with GoPros?
The 100 GoPros costed more than the car XD
GTI...not a Golf....
Braedon Dowell Golf GTI
Well you say its only a golf, but take a gti or a R on moutain roads like where i live and its pure fun. And there's the R400 coming with 400 hp which is enormous
Killian Crausaz Enormous for front wheel drive anyway. a lot of cheap American cars these days have 415+ hp but RWD
As a video editor 100 cameras would be s nightmare to string together into a short video. I can easily assume that not all 100 were on the white golf as that would be pointless.
Fun to watch and a nifty concept.
Got my 2015 GTI SE yesterday...compared to my 2010 MK VI, it rides better, feels more refined, has tons more interior kit, and looks a lot better in the flesh. I love the ride/handling balance, and love how composed it is when you throw it into the curves...we'll done VW! Upgrade your GTI, everyone, now!
The white car looks like it just had hit puberty and is showing pimples everywhere
Why would put so many cameras at one point of view, I don't understand that. All front cameras will take the same footage
Mike12r1 - Official Channel Not necessarily. Do some research on how 3D filming works.
TonyIsGaming if they had used the Bullet Time feature, which I was looking for when watching this video, then I might have understood why you'd put 100 cams on a car. These shots could have easily be done with 3 cams like at the black Golf. The only thing that would have changed for this video is that the white Golf would have looked nicer. This way the car looks like crap and the cams were just out for a possibly perilous ride. If you need to promote this for having 100 cams use them to create something new. All and I really mean ALL shots of this video could have been made with 1 cam. Ok maybe it would have taken a few extra laps, but thats it.
FFFFFUUUUUU
Guys, no music. I joke about it all the time, but in this case... the bass and stuff is making me think "is that the sound track or the car?" In particular around the 1:23 mark. That is very frustrating for-- I dunno-- enthusiasts who like to listen to the cars over anything else. I hope there's a version just with sounds, that's all I can say. Thats' one of the reasons I love Winding Road so much.
The credits-- thank you.
I wonder what the coefficient of drag is with all those cameras.
A GoPro commercial!
love that burping sound when upshifting!
The sound of the blow off valve on the new gti is awesome, much better then earlier golf's
WHATS THE FUCKIN POINT
Advertising money.
I don't think the new Golfs will be ever as fun as the Mk1 golf.
That was really awesome! Cool sounds too!
goddamnit! another willow springs film session that i wish i was there for!!!!
Fun stuff. Now, let's hear how it drives! Definitely waiting on Randy's impressions. Having had a few MkV and currently a MkVI in the garage, I'm excited about the MkVII, but more particularly the upcoming Golf R.
I hate to say it, but as a GTI owner and a huge fan of the DSG [despite mine being a stick], I'm hugely biased in my feelings about this video - thought it was awesome and loads of fun to watch, and the engine and blow-off sounds melted my ears!
What an awesome exhaust notes definitely love the sound. The new Golf has strong balls as the turbocharger I LIKE it!
Meanwhile, back in Wolfsburg, a VW engineer is looking at this shaking his head and thinking how all his hours of wind-tunnel tests have now been rendered useless.
holy editing bat man! that was sweet, but why so many go pro's? you could have got the same result with half the amount of camera's there, but I get your concept of having that many
That thing looked like a Mad Max GTI!
I was expecting a lot more, especially with 100 go pros. Hopefully, they step it up in the next episode!
Flashing their beams like GG.
Yawn. A 3:12 VW/GoPro commercial. Call me back when the next road kill or 240SX project comes out.
one of the best cars. i love it.
1 VW + 100 GoPro = Marketing Exercise
You used like 6 GoPros in the making of this!
That was sick
even 1000 cameras wouldn't have helped this lame video
Hot hatch with an automatic transmission LOL.
whats strange about it? btw it isnt a normal automatic transmission it is a doubleclutch transmission which shifts as fast as the best supercars out there...so definitely worth it.
I prefer true manual since it adds to the driving experience, but if people like fast shifting automatics, whatever.
Hot hatch with the DSG. Also known as one of the fastest double clutch transmissons there is.
Fast shamashed, I like my brain and hands to shift, not the car.
Today you learned the DSG has manual mode which gives you full control. Using you guessed it. Your hands and brain.
forget about the car i bow down to the person who had to edit 100 clips of gopro footage
Sweet exhaust note
If anything all those cameras make the car look stupid, I'm pretty sure even just 5 Go-Pros would've been more than enough
This is what happens when you run out of ideas.
it feels a lot like a movie.
All those cameras add some serious weight! Haha
100 gopros and 80% of the vid isnt even captured with those. WHERE IS THE BLOODY POINT??????
Still better than twilight ✌
Nice aero package.
Oh wow.... Incredible....just saw some cars driving....
I think everyone was expecting something more, rather than filming the GTi with the GoPros on it from a 3rd chase car, I would have liked to have seen some crazy shots from at least half of those 100 camera edited a nice manor.
Look forward to the next episode regardless.
Hey Motor Trend! Use those cameras on the track and show us a fast lap of a supercar like a 458 around willow springs.....Multiple cameras on each corner showing us every little slip and slide in gratuitous detail! NOW THAT! will be AWESOME!
or even educate the masses on oversteer and understeer with multiple cameras on one corner and show them what it looks like from inside and outside the car from every angle!
Those 100 GoPros cost more than the car itself XD
No doubt. Awesome vid!
Thanks, Freeman. Stay tuned; there's an array of diverse content to come...
Motor Trend Channel it's Randy vs Kelly...you can't go wrong. They could be racing Chevettes (thank God not). Hopefully you'll get your hands on the R400 soon.
if a 100 go pro cameras each record for 1 hour.....then that's 100 hours of footage right there?
It's a problem when the content of the videos responds only to sponsors interest and Motor Trend forget what people really want... I think i talk for all the suscribers when i say that we dont want 3 minutes more of commercials
Agreed. Funny how they do this when GOPRO is about to go public on the stock exchange...
It seems they barley even used all the possible angles of the camera car
Awesome video but I am pretty sure you guys could of done some pretty cool camera effects using all those gopros. But looking forward to the next videos. Keep up the great work!
I enjoyed the video, but as others have said, I don't think the 100 GoPro's mounted to one car adds anything to the experience. My favorite angles were shot from the GTI Randy was driving, better displaying the body lines of the new GTI. I am not a GTI enthusiast, but I do like the look of it. If you're trying to show off the new product, don't load it with tech junk for the sake of rev share! Thank you Motortrend for offering this content! I just think a few less cameras would go a lot further.
Nice vid. Looks like the trunk latch was open at the end of the video. Wish the outside looked a little more updated but the interior is very nice.
Wow I wonder how much work that took well done.
nice shift sound
They used more angles from the black car than the do pro covered one
Does anyone realize there is $40k worth of GoPros on that car? More than the cost of the car! lol
Wow...100 GoPro cameras and most of the footage was from either a chase car or other cameras placed around the track...
So if most of the footage was taken outside of the car o inside the cabin and not from the GoPros themselves...what's the point?
I don't know what to share on this, but let's say it's easy to gather a hundred hours of footage with 100 cameras! And that sure as hell was more than 1 Golf GTI, as advertised.
I don't think I've seen a proper use of so many GoPros in this video, but there surely are - please refer to Smarter Every Day 65 on TH-cam. Now, there were just a lot of GoPros showing. Good luck on getting the rest done, you have my trust still.
And even if I didn't like it, I got this for free so who am I to complain (hint to the commenters).
Cool GoPro commercial
GoPros cost more than the car!
They guessed 100 cameras were too many.
Now, they know.
I want a Golf GTI :'(
Roadkill still wins...
Golf da Go Pro
I don't get motion sickness, but that was a lot of cutting from shot to shot... woozy
I love Golf GTI.
I know there's a lot of effort & time to edit a video but I didn't saw enough vifro footage of the GoPros I was hoping to see more editing & videos but it's a nice project & I hope to see more!
"Filmed with go pros" Oh yeah then why are their other cameras being used?
All those cameras and not one capable of doing a follow zoom.
you guys need more cameras
Motor Trend dropped the ball on this one. Was expecting some fancy editing techniques and never before seen kinds of footage taken with go pros. 100% disappointed.
Nice advert try by VW USA
But the fact is GTi is more like a point and shoot instrument rather than a fun playful hot hatch, sure I am a biased Ford guy but I appreciate the work done by VW with the new GTi, its lighter and yet has the most luxurious interior ever in any car of this price range,
Lots of goodies and features to keep the occupants comfy all the time
The best part of all dual nature- its like Rolls Royce of hatch backs when put in comfort mode and transforms into a FWD touring car when put to sport, its mechanical slip diff is and TCS is so good that the car initially will feel like its AWD, that much GRIP(except Renault Megane 265 ,not available in USA poor Americans), I bet no other FWD road going car in the world can match Golfs GRIP, better GRIP means faster lap times, faster A-B transportation and with DSG 1 f the bes t gearbox in the world its really quick and when i tried the DSG Golf consistently lapped faster than what I was able to do with a manual
But if some one wants a real FUN,playful,LOUD FWD hot hatch the Focus ST is still the KING, its AWESOME FUN to DRIVE, its really amazing that a FWD car does oversteer like he ST, but even more impressive than the ST is Fiesta ST though down on Power thats the worlds best real bargain hot hatch money can buy
100 GoPros, bcus each of them gives u extra 5 horsepower, lol
The white GTI had enough cameras to install active camouflage
All them camera on the car and you keep showing a close up of someone eyeballs. Wtf
GoPro filming another GoPro
100 cameras= +20000 $. Good idea.
I miss the old motor trend. I wish Ignition was still once a week and that Head to Head was every other week. Epic drives with Angus Mackenzie through Europe, instead of Arthur St. Antoine. I miss the daily content and I used to look forward to seeing a new video everyday.
So there's 100 gopro cameras, but we're not being shown any footage from them. Is that right or am I missing something?
This is not what I had in mind when I read "Golf Gti Battle", That was a powerful sedative with some less than stellar editing. What the hell happened to Roadkill? That and dirt-every-day were the only reasons I subscribed to the channel...
The "blowoff" sound that is heard is probably just the intake sound. My Mini jcw sounds the same way but quieter in person. The sound in this video is probably not fake, they just have an external recorder or mic hooked up to the car which picks up the intake sound A LOT louder than a person can hear it.
I want to own a GTI so bad!
Why is everybody so grumpy? It's silly, it's overly sponsored, but I like it because it's so silly.
This is crazy
A GoPro commercial ? Not what I expect from MT. I really like the standard Randy Probst track evaluations of cars that you usually do. I just watched a bunch of Ken Block Hoonigan videos. They are OK to see what is possible, but I am interested to see if I want to lease a new GTI ,(or Type R when they finally come out.), and see how a standard GTI performs on the track and the road.
When you have stuff like that they either are, an ingenious innovation or a humongous flop. Let us wait and see. So far looks promising, if there is a new crazy video process that can take advantage of this set up, we are going to have a good time....
Looks to me like they're just letting each other pass.
Listen to that 2.0l turbocharge engine sounds good to me
Should have done this with Audi's new S1
Here's my issue, and I respect your opinion if you disagree. I watched the preview and this episode, and I asked myself "why?" Why would they strap 100 cameras to a car, inside and out mind you, and put it online? To me, it really just doesn't make sense. It just seems like a waste of money, even for a successful company like Motor Trend. I mean, I watched it because it's Motor Trend and they make great content, but I don't think I'll enjoy it or be coming back for more.
Frankly, I find a bunch of joy from a minimal number of cameras capturing the inside of a car, and a couple to capture the outside on a track. Switching between shots like this just gives me a headache.
Motor Trend presents: content that doesn't win them subscribers.
I thought this would be cool....
Such a shame that the turbo and gear shift changes aren't offset by a decent exhaust.
100+ hours of footage. And this is all we get?
