I had the privilege of flying out to the motherland of all things Ferrari recently: the firm’s iconic Maranello HQ and adjacent Fiorano test track.
Soon after I arrived, I was thrown the keys to one of Ferrari’s latest gems: the 296 GTB - a 830hp hybrid monster that I didn’t hesitate in exploiting on the stunning mountain roads nearby.
Could this be one of the finest modern-day Ferraris currently available? Or does it hide some significant flaws? Watch on to find out…
Stay tuned for plenty more videos from my epic Ferrari road trip, coming very soon!
Thanks to Flat-Out Media for producing this video: flatoutmedia.org/
Probably the most enjoyable, professionally documented piece of TH-cam filming on a modern Ferrari I've ever seen.. No BS and Total respect for hearing a proper drivers opinion on a car most people will never understand..A amazingly detailed description and natural commentary.. Nailed that Ben, great video 👌
Yes. Thanks for keeping it real.
I agree, 75% of Top Gear was stupid pratting about for non-enthusiasts.
We need a new programme for car enthusiasts.
@pauladams5673 of course it was. It was entertainment! The world's most popular show.... and I bet you looked forward to and never missed an episode!
Couldn't have said it better
Agree with you 100%
The production look of these videos is superb. And your presentation skills have come-on so much that I would say you’re now one of the best. Seriously.
I agree.
I would like to see Ben and Harris collaborate for a serious race event and document it all, they are both the real deal in this game
They should collaborate, both brilliant
Ben, Chris Harris and someone like Jason from Engineering explained would be a good trio. Throw Johnny Smith in there aswell.
30 minutes of my life well spent, actually. I got to hear the car, heard a bit of Enzo history, and heard a sincere perspective from one of the most respectable drivers ever. Thanks Ben and crew for a lovely, thoughtful video.
I would rather watch Ben's videos. He can really drive and he really knows what he's talking about
Loved this car - next time hopefully unleash it on track as well but this was a unique chance to “see Italy” the Ferrari way
Rather than... just curious.
@@samuelgarrod8327 all the other clowns out there scheming themselves racing drivers. Ben really got my attention when he took Jodie Kidd round Silverstone (?) in that GT3RS & she told him in so many words how good he is. And he discusses everything that I would like to know about that particular car
I remember him showing some TH-cam goons his integrale. Casting pearls before swine . They were clueless and borderline disrespectful.
I nearly fell asleep, so boring! Good reason he wasn't a presenter on tv
Felt like an actual old school top gear review
Nearly but not quite, he’s getting close to it though
Top gear never goes in too much technical details like Ben and Chris Harris and Top gear was a family show totally different to these types of reviews...
@@VerangaF430 not sure like I said it felt like had it’s moments
How is the boot space?
More 5th gear with Tiff
I would say 296 is underrated but the truth is journalist/reviewers in the know raved about it and said it’s one of the best driving experiences ever, very impressive given the long list of great Ferraris. Me personally, I’m a McLaren/Porsche GT car fanboy…..which is why I am blown away too by how good this car is to drive. The agility/sharp front end/immediate power delivery/impressive sound makes it a blast to drive at any speed, the fact that it’s bat shit fast is just an added bonus.
Did they rave about it? I never heard a peep so I was blown away by this car - Ferrari v secretive about the differential but stay tuned for my interview with their test driver who err - kinda gave it away 😜
@@BenCollinsDrives Some did, Chris Harris, Henry Catchpole, Jason Cammisa all were very positive about it saying it's the best ferrari in a long time. Throttle house also gave it a good review
@@BenCollinsDrives they didn't because it's not an ev lol
I went for a 296 GTB over the 992 GT3 RS. It is spectacularly good, remarkably compliant and yet explosively quick. Has both depth and versatility that the 992 GT3 RS doesn't have. I'm lucky enough to have a 991.2 GT3 RS as well, real world there is very little difference between the 991.2 and 992 RS, so in some respects I have the best of both worlds. It will be interesting to see where Porsche goes with the 992.2 GT3 RS. At the moment Ferrari seems to be knocking it out of the park.
@@BenCollinsDrives one of the journalists for Car & Driver who I’ve followed for probably 15 years said he is always asked by people what is the best car/or car he’d have over any other and he jokingly said as weird as it feels to say ….his answer is now a V6 Hybrid Ferrari. Matt Farrah had said while testing a $532k (!) MSRP 296GTB during Performance Car of the Year for Road & Track, that as crazy expensive as that particular test car was that he has to admit it’s worth the stratospheric price. Also, I was watching The Intercooler Podcast the other day and Andrew Frankel said in Ferraris history of building some epic cars that this one is way up there and that in his opinion it’s one of the best cars he’s driven. Those are just a few examples. Great video Ben!
Nice one Ben. I adore my 296 GTS Assetto Fiorano. Easily the best driving experience I've ever had. It sounds infinitely better than my previous Ferrari - a 488 Pista - and handles SO much better too. It's as drop dead gorgeous as the Pista, and is especially striking with the AF pack. I love being able to stealthily glide through local towns and villages with the electric motor - keeping things classy and civil. It's a lovely understated touch - allowing me to properly enjoy the howl of the engine on the back roads. The performance is off-the-charts. It handles wonderfully. And taking the top down or even lowering the rear window (with the roof up) brings you even closer to a glorious soundtrack that's miles ahead of the 488 and F8 V8 generation. Heck, I even prefer it to the 458. It's more tuneful, refined and creamy. What a thing this car is. What a thing!
The few people i have encountered who own these cars LOVE THEM - highly underrated i think journos mistook the car for a detuned hybrid and didnt realise what this thing delivers
@@BenCollinsDrives Interestingly, journalists like James Dennison, Chris Harris, Harry Metcalfe, Jethro Bovingdon etc. have all enthused over the 296 with superlatives galore on how incredible the car is. I couldn't agree more with each of them. However, I think many traditional car enthusiasts struggle to see past the V6 or the hybrid technology etc. and write the 296 off as being below what came before - rose tinted glasses and all. I get it. I had a proper old-fashioned mindset when it came to a modern V6 hybrid Ferrari… that was, until I drove the thing during a local dealership event. *#$* me! Wow! I honestly couldn't believe what I was experiencing - and how narrow minded I had been. The reality is that the 296 is a very special forward-thinking Ferrari, which if you open your mind to it, will knock your socks off. Every time I take it out, it's an unforgettable experience and I know other 296 owners know what I'm talking about here. It's a modern masterpiece (in my humble opinion) - and I hope other petrol heads open their minds to what they're missing out on. Thanks for all you do Ben. Cheers!
Maxium green, just like the car Ben is driving, Well done managing to have one of these beauties. Wonderful.
Looks like design cues from Honda civic/corvette at the front. Lost the ferrari taillights as well. These things are just too quick to enjoy on the road, I can't even get the most out of my 981 S
What an absolutely drop dead gorgeous looking and sounding car. That green colour is brilliant too.
Still the most enjoyable and able car reviewer around. Criminally undersubbed. A classic that will become recognised. Great drive this time, what a car.
well done Ben this channel and your presenting has come on leaps and bound. editing on point too.
Much appreciated!
Ben, that’s your best video yet. Thank you.
Obviously a man that not only likes Ferrari cars and the heritage, but also can handle them to the limit..
Best thing about Ben is how he looks on camera comes second to his passion for the car he's driving, makes his reviews the best out there 👏
That might be the best Ferrari car/ color combo, ever....and wheel color, too.
Jeez, and interior colors! Wow, what a spec.
Some say it is the best video test of a Ferrari 296 driven on the magnificent roads of Italy. All we know is that it's true!
One of the best TH-cam channels, thanks Ben.
that sound is addictive
Hands down the best car review I’ve seen in ages. No gimmicks. Just an articulate guy who knows his shit and can drive. Awesome.
Now here’s a man with automotive culture in his heart… very well made and emotional video… I am not a Ferrari man by any means but the 296 is a very sexy mixture of less is more… and its driven by THE STIG… Grandioso 🎉
Ferrari missed a huge marketing opportunity with the 296 , by not naming it Dino 296 . I think more enthusiasts would have got what Ferrari were doing with this model then, which was focusing on driving experience, rather than just the headline figures.
Im not a Ferrari fan but saw this in person yesterday, It look so good.
This is so much better than Top Gear ever was. An actual driver worthy of such a beautiful machine giving us no BS. Just pure joy of driving a beautiful machine. Love it!
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful car, beautiful spec. Great review. More of this please.
More to come!
I’m very jealous of you most days, Mr Collins but the day you filmed this more than most. Stunning footage. Stunning car
Best review I have seen on the car.
It can have all this new tech in the world, baing loaded with it, for me the 355 is the best Ferrari ever. A timeless beauty
the ferrari is incredible but your presenation is something else. amazing to watch
From the legend himself
Felt like this segment came straight from the heyday of Top Gear. Well done Ben, keep the great content coming!
Really love the 296!
Honestly, the detail and the way the drive was described, this deffo isn’t going to do the sales of this model any harm at all 👍👍
Ben is carrying on the legacy of Clarkson, Hammond and May during their Topgear days now of providing stellar reviews.
Great videos, no BS or fake/scripted parts. Well done Ben wish you the best :)
Much appreciated!
Ben is making noises you don't hear very often, it must be special
Your perspective and direct communication style was refreshingly enjoyable! Reviewing the 296 while simultaneously ripping it down a twisting mountain road with ease, shames all other motoring journalists 😂😂😂 Thanks 👍🏻
Much appreciated!
You know it's gotta be good when Ben starts whooping and hollering!😁
Such a great watch, give us more Italy content soon pls!
Onnthe way! 🫡
Excellent watch Ben. This is the automotive journalism which doesn’t exist anymore. Keep it coming!
Ferrari knew they had something when they let Alfa develop the V6 for the Quadrifoglio. Lovely, nimble V6 that's a modern step up from the 458 italia without losing the drama and excitement
Having watched Clarkson, Hammond and May say their final farewells Friday , I felt quite melancholy that it was an end to an era for epic car content. Then up steps Mr Ben "OG Stig" Collins who delivers a review worthy of a Sunday night, prime time car TV slot in its own right. Ben, you're the torch bearer now. PS I agree , that Verde is amazing 💚
Lets get Clarkson on this channwl !! 😜
@@BenCollinsDrives Yes ! a Montecarlo and Integrale showdown 🤩
its an amazing enclave recently, the dedicated motorists channels pumping out good gear.. this is right up there with the best, narrative is banging.
Glad you enjoy it!
In an age of almost too much TH-cam car content Ben is managing to navigate and bring great informative content presented at the highest level. Really enjoying his content.
Thankfully Ben\Stig is still around doing these type of car videos now that the Grand Tour trio has finished. Hope to see some collabs with your old mates from time to time.
More to come!
Ferrari, Ben Collins and a great road. The perfect ingridients for a great video. Non bulshit only great information and details. TH-cam car review profesionaly done. Great work Ben.
Extremely well done Ben!
What a shame you have been hiding in the Stig suit for so long. This is what you do best Ben. Thank you for bringing us the content we need, the cars we want to see, hear and feel. Top notch experience.
This and the 812 are the best Ferraris of the last 5 years.
If there was only one person allowed to drive this car it had to be Ben Collins. What a likable guy and one of the best drivers of the world.
Proper driving by a proper driver. Great stuff
Such a well rounded video!! Didn’t really feel like a car review but I know so much about the car and learnt something about the brand I didn’t know
Glad it was helpful!
6:00 angle-shaped side glass, like on Lancia Stratos😎😎🔝🔝🇮🇹🇮🇹
Ben Collins, Chris Harris, Jonny Smith - I would like that line-up for a grand adventure.
Jonny Smith???? 😂😂😂
I can’t think of a car manufacturer with a more complicated model/naming structure than Ferrari 🤯
Porsche? Mercedes also up there…
Superb car, brilliant production and knowledge and outstanding driving.
Ben gives us well made , informative and entertaining videos . He is a great driver with keen interest and so much knowledge. He certainly doesn’t need so called guests . Let them do their stuff and give us more of this please 🙏
Kudos to the camera car captain ! Nice bit of driving.
Brilliant video. No bla bla, I was hanging on every word
That color is just incredible.
This sure does manage to capture the essence of Top Gear with the production and editing. Makes me wonder if Ben managed to snag a few people from the crew.
Having been very luck to have owned quite a few Ferraris I think the 296 is just about the best car I've ever had. The breadth of it's ability and the duality of character is astounding. The Ferrari strapline of "fun to drive" could be accused of being cheesy, until you drive it. It really is the most fun Ferrari I've had.
A green Ferrari? Really? ......GREEN? ......but WOW, how good does it look in that beautiful shade of green. Stunning car, and great vid. Thanks Ben
“bella machina” i kept hearing in the streets - young and old - they love it ❤
This might be the first Ferrari that I actually desire since the 458
The old guy trying to explain the Stig that he can't park the Ferrari in that spot was very sweet
Fantastic Car, Fantastic Video & Fantastic Driver. TOP
NOTCH
Would be amazing if we could see a lap of Dunsfold in this car
Some say...
this is beautiful commentary. He’s driving that car within the speed limits, but he is so, so cool while commentating the ride. Brilliant stuff.
Did Ben say ^braking and entering^ ? what a phrase!
We were driving my friend’s Ferrari around the roads behind Lago maggiore a few years back. Everything Ben says about the Italians and Ferraris just is so true.
Ok this is the best modern car
23:47 Must have come in handy learning Italian while doing the power laps in Series 8 of Top Gear.
That green is stunning 😮
If it is not Red, it is not a Ferrari. Very sexy car from every angle except the front.
I'd sell my first born for a yellow 599.
Badass car. Sounds great for a V6 Biturbo.
Some say he is an excellent presentator 👍
Some say he doesn't speak a word of Italian
That colour is amazing.
I am lucky and happy enough to own a 296GTB by myself. Not in green, but in F1 rosso, which is a matte red....😉
I watched quite a few 296 vids on YT before and after I bought it. But I must say that none of those videos captured the essence of the 296 as I perceive it as well as this 30 minutes clip.
Thank you very much. Great work!
This car is so much fun to drive.
Forget the flimsy buttons and the inefficient UI, but the amount of driving fun this car offers is pure joy and brings a big smile on my face every time I push the accelerator.
And yes, it turns heads everywhere you go with it. I never heard a single negative comment and people are all smiles. So am I...
I love that you are not following the trend for hating Ferrari for no reason at all.
Such a gorgeous car
I love how you slide the car while calmly telling us about Ferrari history 😂😂😂😂
Still some STIG left in you!
Seems very competent. Looking forward to the manual transmission version.
Man, this 296 with green paint and green interior just looks sick af
A lot of beeping going on there in the car 😅
Otherwise I'm just drooling over it now. And the color is fantastic!
Brilliant job Ben, very enjoyable. Top job. John
Glad you enjoyed it
like someone else said this felt a bit like good old top gear ❤
Definitely one of my favorite Ferraris. It’s got classic airflow heartening back to the 1960’s.
How does this channel only have 200k subscribers? This has to blow up soon! Amazing stuff!
Man this guy is good. Makes my videos look like crap.
Love the green color, think it looks great on almost any car. 911, Continental GT, Genesis GV90/G90, Bentoyaga, just a few with this dark green that look amazing.
Love how bens channel has blown up been here from the early vids
Awesome Car. Dispite the haters.
The hater have probably never even seen a Ferrari never mind sat in one. Who could hate perfection?
Damn that car looks good in green. I want one so badly, but my Vanquish is only worth about half the price of one.
And so the old ´Italian Tune-Up’ was giving it the beans to clean out the engine, has now moved to putting it in competition mode giving it the beans to charge up the hybrid battery quicker, great to hear some old school tricks live on 👍
So good to see you behind the steering wheel of this 296! Until now I thought these new Ferraris are only bought by vloggers to amaze their audience. And for me was very hard to fell in love on a first sight. As for me Ferrari's magic started to disappear after 458. So good to see the newest car from your perspective🙏👍👍
A wonderful production. Ben could do a segment on a corrugated cardboard box making facility............. And I dare anyone of us males NOT to watch it at least once from start to finish! Just great!
23:47 Some say that if you talk to him in Italian, he momentarily goes into Stig mode.
Great video, great car! Thank you for a well shot and presented video 👏👏
Sunday entertainment 🎉 Great video as always!
Thank you glad you enjoyed it!
It's a tough job Ben but someone's gotta do it 😃
Absolutely stunning, one of the best looking Ferrari
It really is!
Fantastic video Ben .
There isn’t enough videos like this anymore so you nailed it well done 👍
Thanks for the visit
@@BenCollinsDrives great to see you doing what you do best
Just biewied after several months missing some videos, just gotta say the videos are getting better and better!
That is the best car review I've ever seen :)
