You can tell he's become attached to the lovable bot, cuz once the bad guys are in custody and Ben has pulled J5 back from the brink, Fred puts a kiss to his fingers that he touches to Johnny's head. Johnny's personality is infectious. Hell, Fred even makes him a bigwig in his new company, Input, Inc. Perfection!
Michael McKean was the gel that held this flick together, love how they had him and Johnny roll together (literally :) in several of these last scenes. MM was tough with a likable touch ...and was the spitting image of a late-1980's DJT hahaha.
Fred always struck me as a guy who was a bit cynical, being street savvy, but also the fact that he was owed to sharks. Once that clears up (after they get the $50,000 check), he becomes better. It's amazing what threats of bodily violence can do to your mental reactions.
Not necessarily. We do still have the Dark Crystal miniseries on Netflix to look forward to. Not only will the draw be the completely puppet characters, but if I remember correctly, it'll be made ENTIRELY using filmmaking techniques from the 80s. Not a trace of CGI anywhere. lol

Incidentally, he calls Oscar "Rasco", when Oscar spelled backwards is actually "RACSO".
Do you have any knowlege about robotics? The parts for talking on him are the lip lights, a speaker and his computer for sure and he was very badly damaged so his computer is screwed up and even it isnt real is seems like the computer is having much errors and reading a lot of stuff backwards from memory

Anyone who says this is a simple movie made for kids wasn't paying attention - you got subtle themes of prejudice, redemption, and justice woven throughout without ramming it down your throats like they do today, all timeless ideas. And above all, never judge a book by its cover, we all of us, even the machines, are far more complicated than that, as Short Circuit proves.

Maybe an expert can help me, but shouldn't power failing just turn him off? His memory should be stored on disk so with him off shouldn't he just turn back on with his memory intact up until power failure? It's not like he has an organic brain that decays within minutes of death.
I’ve been a big fan since I was a kid, so this is what I’m guessing about his memory. Since he malfunctioned, yes he may be alive and having a mind of his own but maybe his robotic engineering would wipe his memory if his power were to fail, which is why he was trying to get Fred to hurry. So him dying would mean a full memory wipe and possibly go back to a normal functioning Nova Defense Prototype... but with no laser. I mean it’s a long theory but that’s what I think of now that I’m older and understand more about electronics and stuff lol

Even though they were fixing Johnny, they were still stealing the electronics.

There is similarly no way the active memory was expanded without the machine going through some form of reboot, and AMAZINGLY BAD THINGS happen if the expansion was installed while the circuitry was hot. Emotional response: "Fifteen minutes to get good" is incredibly powerful in its simple delivery.
