Hi Julian! This is Anne Lenoir Ramler again, checking out your TH-cam recordings. The Spohr Concerto no 2 sounds excellent! I worked on it when I was about 19 at Oberlin, but
I "gave up" because I didn't feel that I could ever finish the project. Your high "C" was perfect. I hope to bump into you again someday. I'm now 70 and getting lazy. I guess I have always been lazy. But my husband Donny built me a gorgeous clarinet studio in our
home in Manitou Springs, CO and now I don't have to drive to my students. I didn't think
that anybody would sign-up for lessons, but so far I have 3 students. Your clarinet playing sounds better than I remember, particularly your tone and musicality. Here's to your career
and successes!!!! Anne Lenoir Ramler, known as ANNIE

Excellent playing, especially in the 3rd movement from 21.40 to 22.10 - those tricky high notes were perfectly in tune :)

Awesome performance, effortless, clean, beautiful tone, in tune, and in all movements; very beautiful slow movement interpretation. Spohr the violinist can be heard here on clarinet! His #1 is my favorite and a bit easier than #2.

Leister's recordings of the Spohr concerti are the gold standard in expression, musical excitement, and technical refinement. I feel that Bliss's performance here is enjoyable, but lackluster -- almost mechanical -- in comparison. I hope he'll record them again in 10-15 years, after a period of life and musical growth. All three of Leister's Spohr recordings are on this TH-cam page. Take a listen.

I can only agree . Leisters recordings Will be unsurpassed for a long long time. They can hardly be better played.
Bliss makes it good but where is the legato where are the sensual feeling where is the Music where is the mystery - and he is a bit high - tuning I mean and it disturbs a lot.
No this performance sounds to much Etyde

Concerning Spohr concerto, Leister is nothing compared to Ernst Ottensamer.

Staggering virtuosity from the most talented clarinetist of his generation, or any of the current crop of virtuosi, for that matter. What sets Bliss apart is the seemingly effortlessness of his playing as he executes the most difficult passages imaginable. The downside is that this impression of effortlessness can make his playing seem callow or lacking in depth. It remains to be seen whether his expression will deepen s he matures.

As good as Leister, only different. I wish Bliss had been recorded with a bit more presence. Such excellent playing needs to be better displayed, like up closer. Leister was better recorded. Julian has way better high notes, but you can't beat that sweet German sound of Leister in the clarion register. I don't agree that Julian lacked expression; it's a matter of style.

Ben tocat, molt correcte i bonic, però el seu fraseig i musicalitat no estan a l'alçada de la versió de Karl Leister que es el meu referent d'aquest concert.
