I believe Carl Maria von Weber was the first true Romantic in music, more so than even his contemporaries Beethoven and Schubert. If you're into that sort of thing, listen to his operas- they are filled with unforgettable melodies. I don't understand a word of German and yet I'm overcome with the rapture of some arias in Der Freischutz.
