One thing this video has taught me is that we are all our own worst critics. I hate nearly everything I make, and currently give stuff away (crafting is my stim, so I keep doing it). Considering starting to sell. Anyway. You talked about multiple tops that you finished that were horrible and too small. I found them attractive and flattering. It's refreshing to be on the other side of saying "I know you hate it, and that's totally fine. I think it looks great." Also, the adhd urge to Start The New Thing regardless of if you have the right materials is REAL.
I absolutely felt attacked when you said the person on instagram is way skinnier and cooler for a pattern but you have to make it anyway. That is definitely me. I will buy all of the patterns thinking it'll look just as cool on me and it never does 🤣🤣
Not gonna lie, I tend to be fairly successful at anything I try (Except for 3d needle felting), but I also don’t keep trying when it turns out that I’m not great at something, so it’s a bit of survivor’s bias. I love that you wave at the camera just a little too long for comfort. It cracks me up. Have a great week and happy birthday!
Thanks for sharing. At least you are brave enough to try making the cardigans and things. I will be sticking to dishclothes and then move onto an Afghan when I finally watch your tutorial and start crocheting. And I really like the bright pink and blue shawl. My biggest fail so far is a full coverage piece on a dark hand dyed linen. I bought the pretty fabric since I didn't want to stitch all the black background. Hadn't used evenweave yet. Lets say it hasn't been touched in awhile and there isn't much done on it. I should have used evenweave. I also used to join stitch alongs to easily and now have a couple of projects I don't even know if I want to finish. Happy Birthday!
This is true I definitely jumped in at the deep end in those early days! Every fail teaches you something valuable, and all that, although sometimes you refuse to learn the lesson like me and my impatient yarn choices... Oof, full coverage on dark linen does sound like a bit of a nightmare. But see? This is how we learn! :D Definitely with you on the SALs thing too, I'm so much less stressed now I've banned myself from entering them willy-nilly. And thank you!
Ah thank you! Absolutely no pressure to keep up with my nonsense, haha, I know there's a lot of content out there. But thank you for dropping back in, I hope work gets under control for you soon! 🥰
Seeing the poor yarn choices tally, and your mention of worsted weight has made me think a yarn types explanation and uses video would sooo helpful if you ever have the time? Again, another fab video, I love seeing an upload from you Michelle 😃
Thank you! That's a good idea actually, I'm not sure it would save someone in my absolute disaster-newb situation, but it would be helpful when they get back from the shops and look at the bag of nonsense they just bought and take to the internet to find out what went wrong! :D
When I first had the idea for this video, I assumed it would be a pretty even distribution of causes of failure. But turns out no! I may officially have an impatience problem 🤦♀️ What's your biggest craft fail?
Who would have thought a succession of "fails" could be entertaining? 🤣 I would have personally not call those "fails", but "impressive attempts at applying your crafts skills", because even if some of them look a bit ugly with the colours (see blue and neon pink scarf 🤭), the creations themselves look very well executed and impressive to a newbie like me! 💪 And on another note: really nice waves in your hair! 🥰
Haha, thanks, see what I mean about it having a range of textures depending on the day? :D It definitely feels like most of my fails have been either impatience, ignorance about different yarns, or just making a simple mistake early on with something like gauge and knowing it was a mistake but telling myself it'll be fine if I just keep going. One of those three is forgivable, the other two maybe I need to work on!
I haven't had many crafty fails, but I also have done a lot. You've seen my super curly crochets already (remember the taco trying to be a burrito?) 😂 I probably do have a few polymer clay fails from when I started, but they're in a box... somewhere. I might possibly have a couple resin fails, but if they didn't completely cure, I likely tossed em. Thanks for sharing your fails with us! Look forward to what you've got coming up! Happy early birthday!!! 🎁💐🎂🎉
Honestly I've just started on a new crochet top (shhh, it's fine) and my first swatch for that curled into a burrito as well, it happens to all of us sometimes! We've got a fair few resin fails ourselves in the form of some gloriously misshapen dice, some of them honestly idk what even happened. All a part of the process! Although, apparently keeping all the fails to laugh at years later is maybe not as normal behaviour as I thought it was 😅
@@TheGiddyStitcher After my mention of tacos & burritos we had to go have Mexican for lunch 😂 I actually like keeping fails to look at em once in a while & feel good about my improvements. Some seem to have gotten lost or accidentally tossed by someone who didn't know better during our last couple moves. Sigh. Thanks for letting me know about your burrito, it definitely helps a noob to know it happens to everyone! 💜
So I have countless half made projects from when I lived in Japan. I would start a project and abandon it when I found something else I wanted to make lol. There is one celtic cabled cowl that I started but I can't be distracted and have to play soundtrack music only. The pattern is so complicated I have to cover it with blank paper except for the 5 stichtes I'm working on. Yeah, it's that bad. Lol. Maybe I'll pick it up when I'm not chasing a toddler anymore.
Lol I tried a lace shawl once that had me the same way, just could not grasp the pattern and I'd try and concentrate on just one little bit at a time but kept mucking things up and having to frog...absolute nightmare with laceweight yarn! I look forward to one day seeing your completed cowl! So you know, no pressure or anything but you def have to finish it 😆
I'm pretty sure there's no tea in there don't worry! Although those boxes are so flimsy now I'm wondering what we could possibly be keeping in there? Hmm. Mysterious!
This is the first time I’ve watched your video…. I subscribed! Truly enjoyed it thinking of my fails and flops and tucked away items. I don’t like large items like blankets… even baby blankets I have not finished. I did finish the matching sweater, hat and booties and my daughter used them when she was a wee one… when she had a little girl I thought I would finish it…. No that didn’t work either even though I found the pattern. Yeah failed there. But my granddaughter had her pictures I’m most of the things I knitted and crocheted for my daughters. I will go through you past videos..
Ah I love that your projects have spanned two whole generations, haha, that makes me feel a lot better! And you're definitely right about giving things away as gifts, sometimes it's only a fail because it turns out not to the taste of the maker, but someone somewhere will love it 🥰 Thanks so much for the comment and welcome to the channel!
I thought that yellow shawl was pretty ok! Of course attracting wasps takes all of that away. A big no-no! I recently ended up with a massive fail with shorts trying to accomodate the weird shapes of my body. Oh well, it ended up accentuating them 🤣 I guess I'm just gonna have to crochet shorts that fit my hips and are too loose on the thighs, just like all the other shorts I've ever worn 🤣
Oh god I feel that. Having big hips is such a pain sometimes! Honestly I am super proud of that yellow shawl and will treasure it always, but wasps are definitely a deal-breaker. Just wish I'd known using cotton would stop it from holding the points in the edging or, you know, being anywhere near the intended size 😆
@@TheGiddyStitcher the problem is that I have narrow hips, but I have a big bump just above it. So anything made for curvy bodies looks ridiculous on me 🤣
Happy birthday! I either always have the yarn and no project or the project and no yarn suitable. Drives me mad lol! For that beige/pink/gray jumper that you blocked too big you could weave some ribbon through around the center and have it pull tight, then it'd look 👌 and for that last jumper you could add elastic to the arm cuffs. I've definitely got s few demon projects lurking away!! And what is with the bizzare colour choices?! I've got a pink shawl thing that makes me look like a marshmallow and a green cardigan that I don't even know what I'll look like in. Probably the Grinch haha 🤣 I shall wear it at Christmas then it'll suit pmsl
Ok so literally just now while reading your comment I've come up with a theory. You know like how if you go shopping when you're hungry you'll buy basically anything no matter how unhealthy it is? If you stash dive when you're feeling motivated to cast on...same thing! Yes I am terrible for shopping while hungry, too 😅
@@TheGiddyStitcher oh my gosh this makes perfect sense!! Most of my stash is hiding in the loft these days cus it over took the house haha 🤣 more into my cross stitch, and I think you should do a UFO/WIP video for your stitches too 😉😂 love seeing other people's makes. My nan has commissioned a cardigan for her birthday, she's got the pattern and gonna get the yarn and my gift is stitching I was like I won't argue with you there! Can't wait if I'm honest 😁
@Abbie Parry A gift for her and a gift for you all in one, nice! 😀 I will definitely have to dig through the "drawer of stitching chaos" and see what unfinished projects lurk in there. If I'm honest, sorting through that drawer has been on my todo list for about six months and I keep putting it off so maybe this will be motivation to get on with it!
@@TheGiddyStitcher haha I just love yours Is only a drawer full! Mine seems to seep into every corner of the house, I've found buying the floss and Aida are kin to buying nice yarny goodies, a separate hobby on their own lol 😂
Of course not! I use Davinci Resolve, to nowhere near its full potential. But it's free and lets me edit in the occasional giant wasp, so that's good enough for now 😅
Ooh, ok yeah it just might! Blocking is the final stage in a project where you (usually, depends on yarn you used and acrylic is a different process altogether) soak the thing you made then pin it out in its final configuration while it dries. But no! 😅
