  • Hello and welcome
In this video i will be replacing the buffers on a Hornby LT Sentinel loco.
For reasons unknown Hornby added ridiculous Dumb buffers to this model. Adding ‘proper’ buffers really lifts it appearance.
    Thanks for looking.

A marvelous job of correcting a few of Hornby's many shortcomings.

A good friend of mine bought one of the six wheel Sentinel’s direct from Hornby when they came out last year. It arrived, well packed, but when he opened the clamshell ice block packaging to get the loco out, it actually fell to pieces with the body coming away from the chassis and the motor would not move an inch. He was very upset, to put it mildly. He contacted Hornby who offered a replacement after some discussion. He declined it, returned the poorly assembled model and got his money back. I recall that he used the refund to buy a Bachmann loco, vowing never to buy Hornby stuff again.

Like you, I too was wanting to improve the detail of some of my locos by fitting and/or painting vacuum pipes red/black. I'd remembered watching you use some red paint at some point, so was about to start hunting through your "back catalogue". But then this video popped up and saved me a job!
    I'm most grateful.

Hmmm looks like I'm going to have to do the same, as i also want to model the one from NVR as i already have Barabel (NVR's 0-4-0 sentinel) plus many more NVR locos but I'm gonna wait until the price comes down especially as it looks like they're going to have problems. 👍

The ones at Lillie bridge shunted the PW wagons replacing the pannier tanks from 71 I lived in west Ken estate and could see into the depot in the shadow of the fall empress state building or stingray building we called it then I lived there 74-77 ,they rarely went out if ever onto the main network as they couldn’t activate the track circuits for that they had match wagons made fromQ stock bogies ,as for the Neasden ones maybe the same don’t remember buffers but remember they had ward couplings like the battery locos

I've had a quick look out of curiosity, all the photos I can find for DL81 in LT service show it without either dumb buffers or the rectangular ones fitted to DL83, just having bare buffer beams instead. I'd imagine both were originally fitted with a central coupling to either go straight onto LT Tube stock or a barrier wagon, although this still doesn't explain why Hornby fitted dumb buffers!

To cover the holes in the buffer beam?

I found myself getting rather frightened seeing the running issues on your model!
I work (or rather, turn up and make myself useful) at my local model shop and listed this model on our website earlier today… it too had running problems when tested.
I had presumed it just needed a lengthy running-in session but the grinding - and now, this video - certainly made that incorrect! I’ll check the others we have in stock tomorrow.
Absolutely shocking from Hornby once again. It’s no wonder their finances are pants right now.

As long as people buy their poor products like these they will continue to churn them out.
