Hi Jenny, as someone who works on one of the real things I can tell you that you have made a good review. I think Hornby would not have been able to fit them with spring buffers as the bufferbeam is rather thin and having the steps directly behind would mean that the ends of the spring begged mechanism would protrude out ruining the look of the model. I know another review out there who made a rather large fuss about not having the feature but if they actually had them fitted they would probably complain even more if it was there due to having exposed components. It’s one of the things that would be too far of a challenge to do in this scale.
Thanks for sharing this review, it’s good to see you like it.
    Matthew

Sam's trains, he seems to do little research & expects a £100 pound loco to be built as if it was a handmade loco. Jenny has done a great review, I too would love the twin engine 0-8-0DH Sentinel, but I think (probable wrong that only the MOD made use of it). As far as I know the the East Summerset Railway has the only example to survive.

I agree. Sprung buffers provide no functional benefit for the vast majority of modellers using tension lock (or Kadee) couplings since the buffers never make contact with the rest of the train. (Directional) lights would be nice. The 2 upper lights on the bonnet should be easy but the 2 lights just above the buffer beam would have to be overscale even with LED's.

@@MrVinnyh hi, the only 0-8-0 left is General Lord Robertson which is currently awaiting restoration at the Avon Valley Railway. We don’t have her at the ESR.

Hi Jenny. As I've said previously, I always consult your review of a loco (if it exists) prior to deciding whether or not to buy.
So when I saw a couple of versions of these locos for sale at £59 (delivery included) at Derails, I searched for your review and on the strength of your expert findings have decided to purchase an example.
    Regards & thanks.

For the price that Hornby are laughably asking for this I would of thought that they could of at least added directional lights !

Hi Jennifer, I got the Bristol Port Authority model and, like you, thought I'd need a wired decoder but after a 2nd look inside I decided there was enough length in the wiring to turn the socket around so a 6-pin plug-in decoder could be mounted over the motor as in the leaflet. I used a Laisdcc 870013 decoder which is no bigger than a typical blanking plate and it fits perfectly. My only concern is that the very low speed running is not as good as when the model was pure DC but maybe a tweak of some CVs may fix that or maybe I should remove the capacitor. The decoder was previously in a Bachmann USA 0-6-0 tank engine and very slow running seemed to be ok then. Great video, very helpful for me to see it before I started. Thank you.

How was it at slow running? I think the person in the comment below must have seen the same review as I did and it would not shunt. It just kept stopping. The review was not in DCC form so they may have made a difference. Watching your video I did see some very close buffer to buffer clearance. Spring buffer would help even with close coupling. I understand the Map point about seeing the ends of the sprung buffer showing, but surely only on full compression. I hope you have a nice time in Scotland. A wee dram will keep you warm. Martin. The buffers would not be right as sprung as they would pultrude into the shunters steps, its a bit like the fad for firebox flicker, as a former fireman, the firebox doors were used either, to allow coal to enter the firebox or reduce black smoke (secondary air) this is where modeling is going wrong. As for lights do we really need them?

@@bentullett6068 I have already done some other shunters in official NATO green and some in LMR blue. I just have to print out the transfers and for wagons too. I plan to record another LMR film with some MOD stock.

I would struggle to get one onto my line because I have three trains already competing for one track. Hmmm.

A good and fair reveiw as always jenny and I will be buying both varieties as i remember the real thing in the late 60's. I get sick of hearing the nit pickers wanting so much fine detail yet whinge when the prices go up, I can live with lesser details such as sprung buffers that serve no real purpose.
