    Does anybody know if there is a minumum requirement as far as filtration at what microns in the auto industry? Does it depend on the manufacturer of the vehicle? Or are oil filter manufacturers just doing their own thing?

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Good Question, I don't have an answer, but I would think the OEM brand oil filters are made to the manufactures specs. for their own vehicles that they go on. I also think the other oil filters made are just like any other aftermarket item, some are made better than others, which is a good thing because we get to choose a better product. OEM oil filters are good but for example, (just talking oil filters) if you take ACDelco or a Motorcraft both OEM Items there are better oil filters out there. Now at the same time If you take OEM parts in general, usually better than most aftermarket parts. JMHO. I'll pin your question so it sits on top maybe someone will chime in.

      @Fred Wills exactly. And they’re not putting the good mechanics on oil changes either. Also, he doesn’t care about taking time to do it exactly right (prefill oil filter when possible etc). All about pumping out more cars.

    For me considering I do changes approx 5- 5,500miles I would be comfortable using ST, even though it has slightly less filter media, and at half the price of the M1 filter it’s a good value.

    I used Mobil 1 for more than 30 years,... I now use Super Tech Oil & Filter 😁
    The best oil for your car is new clean oil so the Super Tech brand affords me to change it more often.
    The Super Tech Oil was easily as good as Mobil 1 in one test I saw but had superior cold weather viscosity which is important here in Pennsylvania.

    Frequent oil changes are far more important than the quality of oil and filter. Even the best oil and filter won't work well if you never change them, and you can totally get away with crappy oil and filters if you change them regularly.
    ST seems to be 90% of the Mobil 1 for half the price, so it's my choice.

    I wouldn’t go 20,000 miles without changing engine oil or filter, 3,000 miles on conventional oil and 5 to 6,000 miles on full synthetic oil. If you change your oil regularly, it doesn’t matter what oil filter you use, they mostly contain a paper element that filters out microscopic particles. I usually get a WIX or Napa Gold which is a WIX too.

    What a surprise I had when I went at my Canadian Tire store to buy a Motomaster OE Plus 7317 (rated for 24 000 km) and the manufacturer (Champ labs) did like Fram and decided to downgrade the silicone ADBV for a nitrile one. For a 11$ CAD oil filter I said no way and I just bought a Valvoline VO-106 at my Canac store for 3.50$, exact same thing but shorter in length. If they claimed 24 000 km for a oil filter with a nitrile rubber ADBV, so the valvoline should do it too. Anyway I just change my oil once a year, 8-10 000 km/year. Sorry for my english.

      once a year is too long, even for synthetic. The oil pan holds in condensation, which ruins the oil. Oil change should be every 6 months, or 8 months max, even if you only drive 5k miles or 8000 km.

      Its the total cu. inches of the holes that matter to the flow rate. It may be filtering the oil but if the flow is restricted then your enging is no receiving the proper amount of oil it needs. Only a flow test of a filter can determine which filter is best.

I know for a fact that they don't carry the Supertech Wiper blades, cuz I was just there buying some the only day. They didn't sell well enough for $5-6, when the Michelin blades were $7-8. I don't mind spending $10 for a filter, cuz I don't change my oil for like 10-12K miles. Both are made by Champion, just different specs. Knowing how they are made I would go for the SuperTec due to the good flow ratio. The mediums are pretty much the same, it´s the inner core that makes the SuperTec better, less hinderance for oil flow, the Mobil1 will have more oil going through the By-Pass.

    unless you are pouring dirt inside engine or you have unfiltered air entering intake, the oil filter mostly catches plastic particles from varnish (oil breakdown with fuel combustion waste) washed off areas like underside of pistons. If your engine is making metal past the initial wear in the first 200 miles then no oil filter is ever going to help you. If the filter catches smaller particles then it is more restrictive and more oil bypasses and goes unfiltered for another trip around engine. There is still nothing that beats oil changes to get crap out of engine that increases wear. save money on filter and don't spend extra on ultra long life oil, just change it.

  • @Steve-kl3mo
    @Steve-kl3mo ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The most important thing is to change your oil in regular intervals. Unless you are driving under extreme conditions or waiting an extremely long time between oil changes, either filter will be fine. People spend way too much on high end oil and filters, that really doesn’t gain them anything.

    • @Steve-kl3mo
      @Steve-kl3mo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @David Wang Most oils and filters sold today (including brands like Walmart Supertech) are of high enough quality to last at least between 7500 and 10000 miles. Some are even guaranteed to last up to 20,000 miles. I don’t know of any engine that will last forever, and many will fail in spite of regular oil changes, regardless what oil or filer you use.

Where as here with the M1-110A there’s a metal seam and a built in bypass valve on end cap. I look at the size and shape of the outer inlet holes. There are several variations depending the production run.
    Their total area should be at least equal to the outlet pipe going into the engine.
    At higher rpms some engines are pumping several GALLONS of oil per MINUTE through those little holes.

  • @vincemajestyk9497
    @vincemajestyk9497 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I would say the ST is the better choice in this case. With those ST filters some are made better than others depending on the part number. I don't think I'd ever use a M1 filter. Not that they're bad but it's a 'mid' range filter (despite being touted as Premium). Like buying 89 gas instead of 87 or 93. In the case of the M1, there are cheaper filters that will do just as good a job, and if you really want a top end filter just get one of the 'real' performers like a Boss something along those lines. I would always look at the media of a filter first then the other details. Both of these are the same, except for area. As long as it's within reason, 3k-5k, the ST is fine.
