    I always enjoy your oil filter reviews. They're both entertaining and informative. Last fall I got sick with covid and spent 12 days in the hospital. Yours has got to be the best compliment I've ever received, I'm so happy I could help you out when you had that dreaded covid, and I'm glad you made a full recovery. My daughter got covid just before this New Year and she's still not 100% recovered. This dreaded disease has affected all of us in one way or another. The oil in the coolant seems a result of the engine almost being overheated - gauge never reached hot, but clanging noise after that as I limped home - car ran great, was driven cold to the dealership - eventually had engine rebuilt since almost 200,000 on it, and it would be expensive to tear apart an old engine to try to track down where the oil was entering the coolant - occasionally.

    I like to keep a good stock of these filters for my older Ford vehicles and thanks to your video I went out to my shop this morning to check what I had. Out of 24 filters , 18 were the older type with the bypass at the base. More and smaller flutes on the end of the older style is the tip-off and my preference. The remaining 6 are the newer type, which is fine, except on closer inspection, one is completely missing it’s bypass valve! Because of your excellent and timely video, I avoided installing this one obviously defective and totally ineffective filter on a vehicle. Thanks for all of your videos and especially this one! 👍🏻

      I no longer have the filter. I gave it to a friend who swapped it as defective, for a new one. I did however take pictures, but I don’t think I can post them here. The build date of the defective filter was 901182216 (January 18th, 2022). If you look at the dome end of the filter through the base threads, you should see the rivet that holds the bypass valve to the spring. If you don’t see it, then you’ll be looking straight through at the inside of the end shell. Obviously the bypass valve is missing. I can’t say I’ve ever ran into this before , but then how would I have known to even look? Though I prefer the earlier type, I think these are still decent filters and I’ll continue to use them, but checking them from now on.

    All I know is that I have a 32-year-old F-150 4x4 with the 5.0 engine. All that's ever been used has been murdercraft parts. All up my Fords I use motorcraft parts. However they used to make the oil filter must have been a great design seeing that my 32-year-old truck still runs perfect can sit for 5 months and I can jump in it and start it right up. Once in awhile I might need a jump box the depending on the temperature.
    I really enjoying your videos. The first video I watch was the cleaning solutions for spark plugs and fuel injection. Ever since that video I watched the other parts and now I'm moving around looking at other postings you have up.
    I always make sure to give everybody a big thumbs up. I figured that's the least I can do since people are taking their time to share information. If I really like the format of the video that's when I hit subscribe. That's what I have done on your videos. I am looking forward to watch anymore of them.

  • @faxmen09

    New Motorcraft looks fine to me. Also has more media area and pleats than the old, a positive. Dome or base end, both serve the purpose. Fact is vast majority of oil filters including the OEMs use dome end bypass, their engineers must have concluded bypass location, insignificant. Both are made by Purolator, but any changes would have to be signed off on by FoMoCo. In short, If I used the FL1A I'd continue to use them. Price is right. Thanks for video.

    I use the Motorcraft FL-1A filters on my Fords unless Wally World is out of them, in which case I use the Purolator, like I just did yesterday on one of the Mustangs. Both are quite good, and the new Motorcraft filter doesn't look to have any significant difference in performance to the near-identical older version.

  • @dzrdr65
    @dzrdr65 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    placement of the bypass is dependent on placement of the filter. If it hang's vertical old design is better since it is not bypassing in a contaminated area of filter, if it is side way's dosent matter. Heavy contaminants go to the low side of the filter. But I agree with you the older version would be my choice also.

    • @WhipCityWrencher

      Had a couple of the 300's in the fleet. At idle I swear the oil pressure gage drew a vacuum reading for the last 150000 of it's life but 40lbs going down the road. Change the oil and do not let them overheat too bad and that engine is good for 300 or 350 tho miles. But got better economy out of the 351. Mounted vertical on a lot of the older engines.

    Just throwing this in as a reference, the Motorcraft FL-12A, date code from 2017 (General Motors PF1218 equivalent), has the same can style as this new FL1A. Cost savings no doubt, probably cheaper to make the end cap bypass than continue to make and replace tooling as needed for the end cap bypass, and to make the replacement dies for that tight crimp style of the older fl1a. Probably also less wear and tear on the dies to make the new/old style gm can flats.

    New ones are too restrictive. 7.3l takes an FL1995 new MC # FL-1995-A.
    After I changed my oil & oil filter from old to new filter I started having serious issues.
    After highway or driving kind of hard when coming to a stop my truck would rough idle & when light turned green & I stepped on the gas pedal truck would shut off. Almost got rear ended. Thankfully most of the stalls were in driveway after revving up the motor to try & pin point the issue. And once coning out of driveway. Thank the Lord it didn’t happen crossing traffic.
    Always had a feeling it was the filter but of course I changed our cps twice, fuel filter, fuel pump & ignition switch. Spent probably $500, finally swapped out oil filter to a Wix. Issue hasn’t happened simce.
    When I tool off “New” FL-1995-A it literally probably didn’t have but an 1/8 of a qrt of oil in the whole filter. They hold a full qrt.
    So at low in town speeds or putting around it was kind of ok but get on it or highway it wasn’t getting the proper amount if oil.
    If you know about the 7.3l when the oil is too low or it’s not getting enough oil, the motor has a safety mechanism that will shut down the motor to save it.
    And during hwy & after the motor ran rough like it was dry or needed another oil change.
    IMO Stay away from the new garbage Motorcraft filters.
    I always used Motorcraft filters, never again.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing, but that's strange because the Motorcraft is an OEM oil filter for your truck, and I'm sure there are lots of other people using this oil filter for their 7.3L with no problems.
      If your truck is under warranty I'd have Ford take a look at your engine, I suspect you may have another problem.

    • @wheelsone6180
      @wheelsone6180 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WhipCityWrencher It's a 2000 so no warranty. Motorcraft may be OEM which is all I used to run. But IMO for the 7.3l FL-1995 filter there is zero reasons for the change.
      I ran through and replaced the other issue it may have been and always suspected the new filter and when i swapped out to a Wix the issues no longer existed?
      The fact that there was almost no oil in the Motorcraft filter when I pulled it off was enough to scratch my head.
      So it's either the new bypass being too restrictive or I got a defective filter and there's quality control issues.
      They are pushing electric and supposedly a oil shortage. So who knows.
      Where's the new filter made, I didn't look.

    Unfortunately they eliminate the best thing about the filter was the upper bypass valve that didn't allow the dirty oil to recirculatie through the engine...The FL-1A isn't used that much anymore except for older V8's , I wonder if they did this to the Fl-820S and other more popular Motorcraft filters used today! That's not entirely correct. Even with base end bypass, unfiltered(dirty) oil still bypasses in a bypass event. ALL bypasses work that way regardless of location. In theory' the base bypass doesn't allow the dirty oil to pass over the pleats when in bypass. However, bypass events have been shown to be rare and of very short duration. Dome bypass used in majority oil filters including the OEMs. It will be Ford's call whether other applications follow the FL1A.

      In addition to where it was originally specified, this fitment gets used as an extra capacity (longer) version of a more common filter where there is room. For example, the standard Wix filter for my Jeep 4.0L is a Wix 51085, but the Wix 51515 is 1-3/8" longer and fits perfectly allowing for more filter media. Same with black Friday specific items (for example look at the laptops and see that some will have a "bf" in the model number indicating a special black Friday production run)
      And people love to bring up tires... Yes the models regularly stocked in store are walmart specific, but they are also a model specific to walmart, you buy a goodyear reliant and you are getting a Walmart tire, but if you order a goodyear assurance maxlife from Walmart it is the same tire you would get from discount tire, pep boys, Jeff's local boy tire shop, etc

      If you have a base-end bypass valve and the bypass valve happens to open for whatever reason the oil will flow from the top directly into your engine. If the bypass valve is at the dome end and the bypass valve opens the oil has to flow from the top to the bottom and could pick up particles of dirt on the way. The end-cap end bypass was really the only thing that separated the Motorcraft from other similar quality filters. The change seems like a poor marketing decision on Ford's part. That may not be an issue in warm climates, but in the Frozen North, bypass at startup is likely a whole lot more common. In a vertical mounting, like on the Explorer, it would seem like gravity would settle some particles in the dome end over time, exactly where you wouldn't want bypass oil to come from. Is it common to see a Parker anti-drainback valve on a non Parker-Hannifin (Baldwin/Hastings) filter?

    I can't help but wonder if the Walmart purchased filter reviewed here is different from one purchased elsewhere. I've seen that many brand name items that I've bought at Walmart are different from the same item purchased somewhere else. That is how they can sell an apparently identical item for less than other stores. It costs less because it's made more cheaply.
    For example, "Foster Farms Wyngz" (chicken) from Walmart has chicken pieces that are about ½ the size of the exact same product purchased from a local chain grocery store. Also, things like bathroom faucets from Walmart (and Home Depot) are of cheaper construction than those bought from a regular hardware store. No punched holes, no dimples saves two manufacturing processes.
    less tooling. Thinner walled can isn't safe, I don't care what some
    half baked research says. Different flutes- now fit wrenches easier.
    Why don't all engine designers make the oil filter like the European
    type? Under the hood, a plastic covering you unscrew, with changeable
    O-ring with filter media on a frame, that switches out easy & clean.
    This remote can design are such an ancient design of wasted steel.

    I am concerned about the thinness of the housing of the new oil filter - drive a 99 Mustang six, had engine rebuilt at 200,000, accidentally almost overheated it trying to limp home with a bandaged radiator hose - hose blew again right next to the bandage - started getting oil in the coolant occasionally. I am afraid something would hit the oil filter from the road, and rupture that thin crappy case. Also, am very concerned that the oil drain back valve be as effective as practical.

    • @WhipCityWrencher

    I have a 1992 Ford F150 and the new style FL1A filter will not screw all the way up on the block. Do you know of a filter that will fit it? The old style FL1A fits it perfectly. I even tried Fram filters and they won't work either.

    • @faxmen09
      @faxmen09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dethangelishere394 In theory base end bypass doesn't allow the dirty oil to pass over the dirty side pleating in a bypass event. So, less dirt particles returned to engine. But, most bypass events are rare and short duration. Most oil filters including OEM use dome bypass. Practically speaking, I agree with your conclusion.

    I don't see the problem. The bypass valve only comes into play if the filter media becomes impassible. Who lets their filters go that long? I sure don't so I think this is largely a non-issue for 99% of users. They still beat the crap out of that Fram junk.

      Oil gets a little thicker when the winter temps go down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I can see the bypass valve open up when first started.
