  • Can't Believe What I Found Inside This FRAM OIL FILTER!!
In this video I cut open two of Fram's oil filters to see what the difference is. The first filter, the Fram Tough Guard, cost less than $4 and the second, Fram Ultra Synthetic, just under $9. I have to say, I was surprised at what I found inside.
That Fram Ultra Synthetic seems to be, to me, just as good as any others including WIX or Mobil 1 or K&N...

Too much repetition. If you don’t have anything else to say then make the video shorter. Fram has been compared to other makes on other channels much more scientifically so for me this video was a waste of my time, not to mention that it came to a flawed conclusion which was not based on any empirical knowledge.

No one uses Wix filters in aftermarket OE product sales or any reputable shop/garage would either, if they do then it’s for bottom line and profit margins...
Near every European vehicle manufacturer uses MANN/Mahlë as OEM, near all Asian market made vehicles use AISIN OEM filtering units, US follow suit on some products but many, AC Delco is probably best OEM in US, the rest I wouldn’t really consider.

I saw a similar video years ago and they compared a few other brands as well. I have not used fram filters since. I have used stp, they where comparable in price and seemed better made. I have found that up to +- 3000 miles paper filters, just filter better than some synthetic media filters. Past 3000 miles I would use the more expensive ones. Several tests I saw showed that paper media is more effective in filtering debris as also better in flow rate than other media. But.....change them frequently.

    • @elihernandez330
      @elihernandez330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I hope you know that AC Delco filters also use that style and so does Rolls-Royce and Honda. all it does is it seals in Media it doesn't reinforce anything that's what the center core is for. I wouldn't really use Bosch and m1 filters as they are actually known to be crappy and only filter to about 67% at 20 microns or 99% at 30 microns which is really pathetic because the cheapest Fram still does 95% at 20 microns and the silver and gold one do 99% at 20 microns. Your engine doesn't care what brand oil can is on it or what caps seal the media it cares about how clean the actual oil is when it gets pumped around into it. And no frams don't explode a failed oil pump pressure relief valve and hard use does. If I wanted to treat my engine well I would use an oil filter that gets 99% at 20 microns like the silver or gold fram. Why not get the ultra. Costs the same but is metal capped and has the best filtration out of all of them at 20 microns. Can't beat it. And they just released an updated version which is even better at the 5 and 10 micron efficiency so the new ones should be even better yet and they still weren't beat by the other off-the-shelf ones.

Studies have shown that even under the worst conditions, in a normally operating engine, essentially no filter will be anywhere near capacity at 5K, and the vast majority of filters can go multiple times more than 10K miles. The data, which was done by a major OEM, is online, although I would have to dig it up. Other than wanting to drain as much oil as possible during an oil change, there is absolutely no point in changing oil filters at 5K. The end cap is also not structural and only serves to help glue the filter media together. Toyota, for example, doesn't even use an end cap.

Every oil filter has an efficiency vs micron particle size performance curve. The Fram efficiency rating is per ISO 4548-12, which has been a world wide industry standard to measure filter efficiency for the last 22 years. If an oil filter is rated at 99% @ 20 microns, it will still remove particles smaller than 20 microns, but at a lower efficiency, like for example 70% @ 15 microns, and 50% @ 10 microns.

Folks always pick on Fram. The thing is, if you change your oil when you're supposed to, the brand of filter becomes less of an issue. Most folks do not change the oil when they're supposed to. Some never change it, and then they have no idea why they experience issues at 50,000 miles. And some use low quality oil. Yes, the brand of oil makes a difference too! Ever take apart an engine, or remove valve covers and it looks like a cross between Jello and roofing tar in there... it's not supposed to. It has everything to do with oil change intervals.
I've used the cheap, orange Fram filters for more than 30 years. I've used other brands as well. And in 30 years, I've never had an engine fail because of oil issues.

Cardboard ends, stamped steel "spring"!!! Stay away from Fram. I used to use Fram, when I was young and dumb. After I changed my oil once I started car oil on dipstick would be dark. I always thought that was normal Cause you can't drain all the old oil out. But then I tried Purolator once and had clean oil that stays clean for long time. Downside, sometimes it's hard to read dipstick cause the oil is so clean. WHY RUN A FILTER IF IT DOESN'T FILTER. I asked a mechanic friend and he said in his race cars Purolator was the only ones that didn't blow out. I've never went back.
The gold one looks like a decent filter though.

Filtering down to 20 microns is actually the norm of good filters even my fancy amsoil filters I use filter down to 20 microns you can't go really any lower otherwise you start messing with oil pressure and other tolerances in your engine that's why if you want to filter down to something like one micron you have to have a bypass filter installed. I wouldn't use fram anything if my life depended on it there's so many horror videos on TH-cam of how they're made I agree with other comments to use a higher quality filter like a wix or Napa Gold which is basically the same thing mobile one amsoil etc

So anywhere in either of those filters did you see any surface rust?
There have been reports of brand new Fram filters straight off the shelf having surface rust inside. Sometimes you can see it on the bypass valve or on the top of the filter plate.
Fram has been considered garbage for a long time after we figured out they use cardboard for end plates. If you take apart a used Fram filter you'll see that sometimes that adhesive has failed and the endplate isn't attached anymore leaking unfiltered oil through into the clean side of the filter. They've known about it for a long time but don't want to change the design. Wix/Napa is now the go to with 21-23 micron at 99% efficiency rating for 32 grams of dirt. Their XP version is only 32-35 micron at 99% due to using synthetic media that will allow a longer oil change interval (you sacrifice some efficiency for a longer oci).
A lot of channels have oil filter reviews, we've seen the Wix being better quality over all. I'd like to see you do a side by side review/comparison next to the filters you just cut open.

They failed to cur off the ends of the filer media & measure the TOTAL MATERIAL IN THE FILTERS! I've seen a Fram stretched out next to a Wix, & there is 3 TIMES the total filter media in the Wix! What do I only use in my Ford 460-cid gasoline & 7.3L turbo-diesel engines? WIX, hands down, with either Valvoline 100% Synthetic, (Mobil 1 is labelled as coming from the same place), or (when I can get it) AmZoil 100% Synthetic; I use the factory are commended viscosities in the gas engine, while I just went with "winter-weight" AmZoil 5-w-40 for diesel engines in the 445-cid turbo-diesel; I did this because I studied up on what makes a "multi-vis" oil able to get thicker when it gets hotter, & learned that a "long-chain molecule" additive is added to the "base-weight" oil, so if the "long-chain additive" overheats & breaks down, a 5-w-40 becomes 5-w-5, but that was when I'd use 60-w gas engine oil in my Harley-Davidson motorcycle engine when it wasn't too hot, & start adding 70-w, 80, or even 90-weight oil in the hot summertime, since William Harley & the Davidson bros. were true geniuses at what they'd built, (and I knew some folks who could get me such "unusual" viscosity oils, "back in the day").
Now, the additives are much more stable, & my cooling systems are also very " overbuilt", so I've never needed to worry about my engine oil temperatures going much over 170-degrees F. (My transmission & engine-oil coolers are larger than most "big truck" radiators, just for "cheap insurance" against overheating. If you want it to really last, get it made in Canada, where they put enough zinc in the steel it CAN'T rust, & they're very good at making cars & trucks that last a very long time; I mean, look at the weather conditions they live with!
Still, it was the 1st half of a good presentation; it just needs to be a bit more thorough, IMHO, in the future. Good camera, lighting, & sound work, just to be fair & give credit!
(I change the oil & filter in either every 4-6 years whether they need it or not, & so far, they've NOT needed changing, based on an independent lab test of samples of the used oil & filters. The oils are measured using chemical analysis + particulate content as compared to new oils, & the filters using pressure-drop & particle-size compared to new filters.
(The "American Iron" gas V-8 engines normally hold 4 Qts in the engine + 1 more in the filter, while the turbo-diesel holds 13 qts in the engine + 2 Qts in the filter; the 445-cid turbo-diesel is NOT made by Ford; I DID find out who made them, but have long-since forgotten. That specific diesel engine is often referred to as "the GOOD one", just FYI.)
I am not a "professional" driver or mechanic, although I've found that I know more about the "SuperFinish-Era" engines than most "Pros", because I "did my homework" back in the day.
Anyone besides me remember Harry Ricardo, now "Sir Harry"?
(He was given the honorary knighthood for his substantial contributions to the knowledge of what's happening inside a reciprocating piston engine), back before the Dodge brothers invented the 1st "overhead-valve" engine; no pushrods or rockers, the valves had VERY long stems, but it really cleaned up the exhaust + made the engines more efficient!)

Take the Fram oil filter and throw them in the garbage Can…NOW if you value your engine. Fram is too inconsistent in quality.
Use only Wix Mobil 1 ,royal purple, amzoil,Bosch,or,kN oil filters on you tube tons of cut open video
My 1993 Chevy 3500 with a 350 engine runs the best on the Mobil 1 filter with Mobil 1 10 30 oil

Great info.. You are right to change oil early. My oil filter is guaranteed for 20,000 miles and the FULL synthetic oil is guaranteed for 16,000 and I change at about oil and filter at about 12,000 miles. Nothing is gauranteed so i change a bit early. (both Castrol)

How about you use the BETTER filter on a car you want to LAST longer, not necessarily a "truck". I'm just using a motorcraft on my 2003 f-150 right now. Wow, it's a truck, I guess I'd better buy a orange can of death! lol And I've never changed ONLY the filter.

Hello to Ms Farris, and no, he didn't introduce you as "wife" in the opener. I b et many like me figgered you were his daughter. Anyway, I'm still not a Fram fan since a bad experience way back there. Now I only use AC filters, and the longer ones of them. I dislike the little 3" long things that claim to be as good as the longer ones.
Towing with your '95, I have the '95 P/U, same trans & gears. I *often* pull a 21' Travel trailer from S.Tx to. NM & AZ. The height gets me with wind resistance since I'm not heavy (3800#) so I always tow in 3rd keep the RPM at 2500, gives 59-60 mph, average mpg is only 10. But I've got my home away from home with me, so no motel bills, and we usually stay out a couple of months at a time.
Sure wish you'd settled in Texas, but Tn has to be so much better than Ca. Good luck to you two, and let the wife continue to brighten up the channel.

5000 miles is a BS money maker. Why does my Cummins Diesel manf. recommend 15,000 miles, it is a much dirtier running engine and harder on oil than gas. My oil analysis report stated convential oil lube properties were still good @ 15K, just dirty with low acids. Started replacing filter @ 10K and changing at 20K. Had oil checked again,Lube properties still good, same dirt and slighty higher acids.

I will use the frame orange canned just if I was doing a motor flush or if I changed my oil every 2000 or 2500 miles I never like those filters, I’ll drive a Honda and I stop using OEM on the filters because they built the same way cardboard
End caps I don’t trust them. I use the new Fram ultra behind the filter is a metal mesh screen also it’s a great filter

Car Care Nut Channel, He was a Toyota Mechanic for over 10 years. Now runs his own shop now. He says. The manufactures get their oil filter made specifictly for each vehicle to Toyota specs. The after market expensive filter may restrict the pressure the oil pump is designed to pump at , or the cheaper filter may not restrict enough to allow the engine to run at the pressure it is design to run at. To bad filter companies do not put a bypass indicator on the filter. So you would know if 3,000, or 5,000 miles is soon enough to change the oil.

Re: micron levels....Filter media testing talks about efficiencies at various micron levels, i.e. for material of a certain size (micron), what percentage of that material will get trapped vs not. So, when they claim to be good to a certain micron level, if they don't tell you what efficiency percentage (100% means it catches all at that size), it's kinda bunk. To put it another way, a screen door is a "20 micron" filter; it's just not efficient at it. Also, if the two figures aren't derived using the same testing methods (SAE has a few industry standard tests that are most common), you can't really compare figures.

Ps... Just ordered an ultra for my toy. Had an orange can come apart on an old hunting rig years ago. Molasses oil. Can not remember if I gave it a motor flush because of the thick black strap. Did the filter get bounced apart, or did the flush dissolve the paper like ends. The black oil at 3000 miles tells me the orange cans are inferior quality.

Just bought a filter for my vehicle at Walmart. All they have listed and available for my vehicle now is Fram. I use to use the Walmart super tech brand, but it appears they have reduced the filter options for those. So bought a cheap 4 dollar Fram. Searched it online and I guy posted on a forum with pictures of how amazed the filter did with a whole year of use. Actually has metal end caps although it's a cheap orange Fram. Makes me feel a bit more trusting of the filter I bought for my vehicle

Or just don't buy Fram. I used to work at an autoparts store and some people would come in and ask for Fram filters but actually left without buying any other brand if we were out of Fram. I just couldn't convince them that Fram is actually the lowest quality 🤷‍♂️ Brand loyalty is fine I guess but that doesn't mean Fram is made with better material. Our house brand was better and sometimes less expensive

Yes sir. Fram I guess are good. Yeah she has a nice friendly pressants. And I bet she learned something. And had good ideas to. I’m not picking but more women need to know this stuff as our kids to anyone who drives. So they don’t get ripped off when going to bad garage. Seems to be a lot popping up. Not all. And yes garage work is expensive. They have people to pay electric bills water. Yeah there high but good garage is definitely worth it. Go do it yourself see what just few of them special tools u might need cost. 😉 there not cheap. Anyway I’m rambling so another great video keep them rolling and stay safe from ur hillbilly buddy.

I used the cheap Fram for years back in the day when i usta change oil and filter every 3000 they worked fine. I wouldn't want to use them any longer than that. I now go 5000 miles between oil changes and use the ultra synthetic as engines burn cleaner now with fuel injection vs carbs. A few more dollars for the best is a drop in the bucket when you are talking about auto expense ; )

If you turn the letters around on 'Fram', it says 'farm'.. What farm does the Ultra Synthetic grow on, because I would like to pick it from the plant, then install it on all my vehicles? I'm in dire straits.

its as easy as this. use a cheap but respectable brand of filters, change oil and filters regularly and often( 5000miles max) and at a minimum once a year. if you do this both your wallet and engine will thank you. oil and filters is cheap.. new engines is not! its idiotic to run these longlife intervalls.. great videos as alwasy dude! :D

I bought it when it was announced that honda was developing a new filter with fram. So fram supplies honda with filters. And the ultra synthetic is created. Used to always get mobile1 filters, but now, i only buy fram full synthetic. And the anti drain back keeps the oil in the motor instead of back in the oil pan, so when you start the car, the oil is still in everything.

In motor work I have been greatly disappointed in todays fram filters breaking apart and stopping up cam sensors and absolutely ruining them the cardboard was breaking down and coming apart. It would come through the filter heading for the head parts where the sensors are completely stopping them up for failure this was after a couple thousand miles after oil change. Never been so disappointed in fram filters.

Yes change your oil every 10.000 miles This is coming from the same people that tell you transmission fluid last the life time of your car Only thing is that the life time to them is as long as it is under warranty And the same people that tell you that 0w20 oil will also lubricate and protect your vehicle When everyone knows they use light oil just to get the MPG 1% higher on there fleet for the government . Its all about planned obsolescence

The material of media in the filter is where the difference is synthetic media take a much longer time to breakdown they're probably both 20 micron media filters with 13lb bypass valves

  • @demonrathunter

I will never use Fram anymore, they don't have as much filter media as others. I will only use A Wix or a Napa Gold which is made by Wix. Do the same test between a Wix filter and a Fram and you will see the difference in components and unravel the filter media and see the difference .
