    I did a summit front disc and dual master cylinder kit for my 65 GTO last year. Fit perfect and is a huge upgrade vs the original drums. Had none of the issues these guys hit

    UTG’s problem with front disc conversions is that they weigh more. This is in the context of drag cars which need to stop only once.

    • @morgenhoop
      @morgenhoop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They also have parasitic drag.

    • @jimbosc
      @jimbosc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UTG builds to get down 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag strips as quickly as possible - cheap. Drum brakes have some advantages in that specific application.

    • @wayne8498
      @wayne8498 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can adjust the drum brakes to have no drag, and they're lighter. Being "cheap" or costly doesn't effect the outcome.

    "Bolt on parts that don't bolt on".
    I agree with the sentiment regarding insisting that at least the front drum brakes be changed out to disks for safety. The owner will be happier in the long run as well since the stopping distance will be reduced and the car will tend to stop in a straighter line than with the drums in an emergency stop.

      And that's coming from Fred Flintstone! I agree, in 2021, if you USE your old car, and drive in NY traffic, a front disc brake conversion is money well spent. Save your backing plates etc in case you want to return it to stock,

    Disc brake conversion is a must if you going to use a car as a daily driver. I had a Dodge Swinger with drum brakes. Coming home from work in heavy traffic, urban area, a pack of dogs ran across the the road. Everyone locked up their brakes so the old guy with the Swinger(me) was the only one who rear ended anyone.

    it seems that Pirate Jack only sells the Front brake Kit conversion for the Galaxie and not the rear as of today when i searched. However,they sell both Front and Rear for the Fairlane,Thunderbird,Mustang (no E-Brake).

    Did you figure out on the tightness of the rotor spinning did you shim it or have to shave some more metal off the steering knuckle or on the bracket I’m just curious because I’m running into the same issue with mine on that same side

    Heres my feelings on the whole disc brake / drum brake issue . my 65 dodge dart came with all 4 9" drum manual brakes and that single Reservoir master cylinder. I drove that car for years her in the branson area . there where a few times the brakes got iffy since we have hills here and dumb drivers especially tourist . since my dart is on project mod I updated the dart to 11.5 " front factory disc rotors and 11" rear drums and 1974 dart dual Reservoir master cylinder . I wanted the extra safety due to the reasons listed above and the fact that if the front brakes go out or the rear brakes I will still have a partial system to get the vehicle stopped . I had an issues one evening in branson where my old brake system single reservoir master cylinder went out and lost all brakes ! luckly before going down a very step hill there was a wendys parkinglot that I whipped into and coasted in and luckly no cars and luckly was able to bump off of the curb and slam the tranny into park 🙄😓😓🙏

    Disc vs Drum...... I like disc front for all the obvious reasons, but there's another one as well.
    Cost! A lot of the stuff I work on is actually cheaper to convert to Disc up front. New brake drums aren't cheap, or simply don't exist anymore. And usually when you convert them, you get standard easy to get rotors and pads.

    I'd love to put discs at least on the front of my '59 Galaxie Skyliner, but with the stock 14" wheels....

    • @672egalaxie6
      @672egalaxie6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lee, check out ScareBird LLC, they have what you need. Use your stock 14" steelies! I did the ScareBird conversion on my 67 Gal. Huge improvement driving in NY traffic. Mine uses 68-69 Mustang rotors (so I can run stock 15" steelies) and the following ubiquitous GM parts: S-10 caliper, and G-body brake hoses. Stock master and P-valve. I hope this helps. Check em out....
      ps.....it's not a kit, you just buy the backing plate/caliper mount and source the rest of the parts on your own. Just a fan of this ScareBird, I have no interest other than to help a fellow broke-in-the-head car guy lol. Cheers!

    Soooooo. The kit you have used has 1970 chevelle calipers that need a 1" rotor. I doubt those rotors are 1"
    The kit I ordered from auto city classics uses 1978-83 truck calipers.
    Probably why they are so tight.
