You should add Anti-Drain Back valve performance to your testing procedure, which is crucial to prevent dry starts. Maybe by installing the filter base upside down and test how much oil, if any, drains back the inlet after a period of time, or reverse flowing the filter to see if any oil gets past the valve.

When I worked at AutoZone back in the early 2010’s, I was there when they came out with the STP Extended Life oil filters. I loved using them! The other guys teased me about it, but I thought that it was better than the Bosch for about the same price.
I think it would be interesting if you bought 4 of the exact same filters from 4 different locations and tested them to see if there was any difference. Example - 4 motorcraft filters. 1 from Amazon, 1 from the local walmart, 1 from a local autoparts store, and 1 from a ford dealer.
I really want to see an OEM Subaru filter. There is so much controversy surrounding the OEM Subaru filter being so good and having the “right bypass pressure”. I’d like to see it proven or disproven. I personally believe the high bypass pressure is due to the poor filter media flow rate, not special oil system needs of the Subaru engines.

Wouldn't it be more applicable to perform the particle count test using the same amount of aluminum powder absorbed into each filter system? The Baldwin absorved twice as much powder as the other filters so there was more in the system that could potentially be dispensed into the sample.
One concern I have about your testing method for checking how much the filter isn't filtering is that some of these filters can contain much more before reaching the stopping point on flow rate. Are you taking measurements at specific intervals after adding a measured total of dust or after it maxes out on capacity? If it's the latter then any filters which hold less before reaching max psi will have a bias.

Love these videos! You're one of only 2 people I've seen do actual scientific research on oil filters, keep up the great work! You should definitely test the FRAM Titanium from Advanced Auto Parts next. A guy from Ascent Filtration did an ISO 4548-12 Oil Filter Lab Testing Comparison using professional equipment, and the old FRAM Ultra got hands down the best filtration results of an oil filter I've seen. Luckily, FRAM didn't abolish this amazing filter and they instead rebranded it as the Titanium with the exact same design as the old Ultra. By comparing and contrasting the data from both you and Ascent Filtration, in comparison to the new FRAM Ultra that you tested, the Titanium should have better DP, slightly worse capacity, and his test showed 99% filtration at 15 microns. If there's any filter that can take the crown from the Purolator Boss, it's the FRAM Titanium!
They did abolish the filter. Titaniums on the Advanced Auto Parts shelf are old stock. New Titaniums have the new design just like Fram Ultra. Still plenty good though.
I heard that as well over a year ago. But I just bought 2 different models of the Titanium filter and they both still have the metal backing screen. So I suppose not all the models are the same

With the Baldwin having such a high particle count, Wouldn't you think that it is doing a better job of filtering out the particles. The other three are allowing the particles to pass on through. I don't get it.
I am curious about the Purolator One filter. After talking to the factory rep, the “Boss” allows more particles to flow through the filter until a higher mileage is reached so it doesn’t clog the media too soon. I was told to get the “One” since I change my oil at 5,000 miles or less. Is there a way you can do the test on the “One”? Thank you and I love your videos.
*JP: Since Oct 2022 I truly appreciate your testing efforts and results. Big however is that hose kink leading to your catch funnel. Sorta renders your upstream ball valve a bit redundant. Pretty sure that is not your intention. Cheers!*
Hey! Thank you so much for supporting us since the beginning! Much appreciated. Yeah, we went through many iteration trying to build a rig that looked pleasant and at the same time fit in a wall that would frame well for the video. We tried several hoses also and some broke. You all get to see the end result but it was quite a bit of work to get this all working. That ball valve was actually quite necessary to control the flow rate, so we can do our hot and cold flow tests. Yeah we could've just linked the hose but then you'd see one of us linking the hose for. Awhile while we read a stabilized result. We want to always be transparent and show you everything so we used the ball valve so you could see how the flow changes on the flow meter on the right as we actuate the ball valve going upstream to the catch can. Again, thank you so much for all your support and feedback!
You guys kick ass! Excellent video. I also watched your other oil filter test. Good watch! It seems to me, obviously use quality oil, the correct viscosity oil provided by one's owner's manual, and a good quality oil filter, it is most important to change that oil frequently. I feel it is important to go above and beyond the manufacturer's 10,000 miles interval. I personally change my engine oil and filters at 5,000 miles, even though Toyota states less frequency or 10,000 miles. I feel clean quality oil is an inexpensive insurance policy for a long trouble-free engine life. However, that's my opinion. After the purchase of a brand-new vehicle, I do my first oil and filter change at less than 1,000. Then go to my "normal 5,000 miles increments on the odometer" oil change frequency from then on. Every 5,000 miles is easy to remember by looking at my odometer. 5, 10, 15, etc...
Great Video. Thanks for providing data instead of just putting your face in front of the camera and rambling about your opinion for 10 min. trying pass it along as fact or truth.

Hey, thank you so much for watching! Yes, this was our last oil filter one (for now) we will be testing engine air filters next. Always taking recommendations so thank you!
Kind of what logic would dictate......... A filter with better flow will allow more particles to pass. Only way to combat that is to use more restrictive media, BUT to add lots more media to make up for the flow rate.
Hey thanks for watching! And yes, this is actually our last oil filter one ( for now) we are testing air filters next! Taking suggestions in the pin comment! Again, thank you for the support!
I think your testing will be a kick in the A for the manufacturers to improve their products! I have 2K miles on my orange can of death (Fram Extra Guard) that I ignorantly bought because Autozone didn't carry the Purolator Pure One that I used to buy from Pep Boys. Another 1K miles and the Boss goes in.
PPE filters are getting more popular with TH-cam mechanics. They tout 10 micron filtration and nearly twice the sqin filter size vs OEM. Would love to see PPE vs WixXP vs Purolator Boss vs Amsoil vs Fram Endurance head to head. In essence…how does the PPE filter stack up against these other top performing filters you have in your top 5 already tested filters

0:00 let me save you time. This video has no legit engineering explanation about the filters he is testing. JUST GET OEM! It was ENGINEERED for that specific oil filter!! Also OEM is way cheaper than any other filter out there!
Have you considered a video where you check consistency of the filters over time? Perform the same tests for the top 5 an additional 3 times and taking the average of the results. How far does that deviate from your initial results?
I’m in a debate with a friend. I have consistently used the largest filter I can fit on my power equipment. I make sure the specs are the same from the oem filter. He says I’m damaging the engine due to pressure loss because of the larger filter. I call bs. I have to add more oil due to the filter size. Fill it till is full on the stick and run it. Turn it off and wait. Check and add if necessary. What are your thoughts?
Oil pressure is measured after the filter, a larger filter in most cases will allow a less restrictive flow and have a higher contaminant capacity. Win win.
I would like to see which cartridge filter performs the best. Preferably the toyota/lexus versions. Please make a video with these filters in the mix aftermarket and toyota brand . Thanks

So I suppose not all the models are the same
Thanks, BR, for all the great work you guys so!
Thank you so much for watching and supporting us! Greatly appreciated
People be putting a restrictive oil filters and are suprised they get knock at a dry start just put a cheap one and change your oil
@jesusramos-my2qr I've used dozens of different oil filters from the cheapest to the most expensive and have never noticed any difference.
We’ve been waiting! Appreciate this one. Shared! Some engine oil testing and even oil additive or engine flush testing would do great! Especially Prolube and BG products.
Thanks for the great ideas! I know it's been awhile and we really wish we could post more often, but being full time engineers and spending time with the family really doesn't leave much time in the week. Hopefully one day we can do this full time and bring you guys awesome content at a more consistent manner.. thank you a gain!
The legend is back 🙌
🤣🤣Thank you so much for watching. Really wish we could post more but doing YT and full time engineer is quite a lot. Hopefully we get to do this full time in the future! Next up...air filters
@@BrandRanks results from the lab taking weeks to come back doesn't help either. thank you and look forward to new uploads then 👍will share with friends and family
You should test Service Champ filters since alot of quick lubes use those
I love this channel, thank you so much for all of your hard work
Please do the two grades of walmart filters and the Purolator one filter
With the Baldwin having such a high particle count, Wouldn't you think that it is doing a better job of filtering out the particles. The other three are allowing the particles to pass on through. I don't get it.
The particle count is in the oil where it should've been filtered out. Baldwin is the only one that did worse than my Fram Extra Guard.
New video been waiting!🤙🏽
id love to see MicroGard Select oil filter be tested thats what i run on my performance engines.
@@BrandRanks *Thanks for replying. My only criticism was the kink in the hose, not of your process, presentation or methods. Cheers!*
Thank you so much for watching and supporting. So glad you enjoyed!
keep this type content rolling, great content
i want this channel to do well. as a tip you should show all the filters you have tested so far in the video icon along with your face with each updated oil filter video. it will being more views (according to videos i have watched about increasing views strategies
Thank you so much for supporting us and the recommendation. We are still learning and trying new stuff, including changing the thumbnails up. Yeah this last one is not doing as good so we may change up the thumbnail and see. Again, thank you for taking the time to write this comment and support us.
What about the cartridge type filters? How do those stack up?
Outstanding!! Thank you, guys...
Thank youuuu!!! Really appreciate you watching!
Id like to see these testing also done on cartridge style filters, i think they are definitely a design that ive seen on multiple manufacturers and it seems like that is where theyre going towards.
Denso filters are great too, been using them for over 10 years on my 2 cars!
Why you never tested Mahle?
Would love to see other car products tested too, like both cabin filters and engine air filters and so on
Hey, thank you so much for watching!
How about cartridge style filters?
I’ve began using the purolator boss after watching your videos! Thank you so much!
So glad to hear! Thank you so much for your support!
Is that an overall ranking in order at the end of the video? If not, where can I find an overall ranking list
How can Wix XP and Toyota change 1st & 2nd place in this video compared to last video.
Great addition to the oil filter series! Any plans on branching out to other test like cabin/engine filters?
Hey thanks for watching! And yes, this is actually our last oil filter one ( for now) we are testing air filters next! Taking suggestions in the pin comment! Again, thank you for the support!
Wix XP should be in the line up. Designed for better flowing synthetic oil.
Hey, make sure to check out our other videos in the series, we included the Wiz XP! Thanks for watching
@@BrandRanks
I just checked out the other videos, and I just watched one with the XP. 👍
@@shakerman55 Wix XP now downgraded to blend media with no more backing. 🤠
@@memopadilla5931
Darn. Sad to hear. Another good one sliding down the hole.
@memopadilla5931 what does no more backing mean? What's the best oil filter then?
9.99? Napa here is over 13!
you tested wix, and wix XP but only tested the top of the line purolator. any interest in testing one of their other models?
As a service manager of a Napa Autocare Center. I can attest to ordering a Napa gold filter and getting a Wix filter with a Napa part number on it.
Do you have any plans to test Mopar filters?
I think your testing will be a kick in the A for the manufacturers to improve their products! I have 2K miles on my orange can of death (Fram Extra Guard) that I ignorantly bought because Autozone didn't carry the Purolator Pure One that I used to buy from Pep Boys. Another 1K miles and the Boss goes in.
Glad yall did one with a wix filter
Great video - I’m still waiting for the test of an OEM Honda filter (bought from a dealer of course)
Sick one boys!!!!!!
Thank you so much! Always appreciate your support
How does the Wix compare to the Wix XP ?
I bet you only wipe with certain brands too
PPE filters are getting more popular with TH-cam mechanics.
Is there some place that I can get the pdf file of the final rankings showing all the filters....some 20 or so? The one you show at the 7:51 of your video?
Can you do the oem Honda oil filter 🙏
Would like to see the new Napa gold, Carquest premium, and microgard select, and ac delco tested as well
0:00 let me save you time. This video has no legit engineering explanation about the filters he is testing. JUST GET OEM! It was ENGINEERED for that specific oil filter!! Also OEM is way cheaper than any other filter out there!
I only use NOS Pulolator or Wix filters
Have you considered a video where you check consistency of the filters over time? Perform the same tests for the top 5 an additional 3 times and taking the average of the results. How far does that deviate from your initial results?
Great Great resource, keep going.
AWESOME VIDEO AND TESTING!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!! YOU GUYS GOTTA TEST OILS TOO!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for watching!!! Yes we plan to do that at some point. We are currently testing air filters.
@@BrandRanks Can't wait to watch that one too!!!!!!
Win win.
I love this channel!
I would like to see which cartridge filter performs the best. Preferably the toyota/lexus versions. Please make a video with these filters in the mix aftermarket and toyota brand . Thanks
Love the content! It would be awesome to see a Fram Racing oil filter put up against a Ford Motorcraft racing filter. There isn’t too much on the two for comparison. 😊
I'd like to see this test done with a K&P Engineering filter too. That would be rad.
really hope one day you guys will do the "cartridge" style filters
Same here, my car uses this style.
Why not any Purolator filters? We should have had some Premium filters for comparison, for people who Like their engines... Do some in the air filter category for sure, I'd love to see how they stack up there
Hey, thanks for watching! We tested the Purolator Boss in another video in the series. Make sure to go check it out!
@@BrandRanks I found it, thanks for the heads up! If I might, could I suggest perhaps listing future comparisons with the best tested, and cheapest tested? Maybe with a link to a list of up to date test results? Seeing my money was well spent on my own cars that I really like is nice to know, but it'd be neat to know how big the gap is between them to better weigh value, you know? Maybe you want to recommend a minimum to a friend or family member more budget conscious, or less demanding with mileage or the right foot. I feel like it's a useful yardstick for a lot of people.
Keep up the good work, the Algorithm™ only graced me with your channel today, and I like what I see already!
@@supramanx1997 same, robot overlords must have pulled their heads out of their butts and realized we actually want to see this material. My filter purchases are officially changed after watching this and the other tests.
Could you do tests on the "house" filters from the parts and big box stores? Most have a general and upgraded versions too. It would be interesting to see how they compare to the name brand ones.
Would love to see some of the JDM tuning companies (HKS, Greddy, Blitz, Nismo, Trd, Sti) filters tested, are they worth the extra money? I’ve always assumed no and stuck with oem.
Have you considered doing air filters? I know other channels have given it a go, but I don't know anyone with your dedication to proper testing procedures (vs throw a hand full of dust randomly at the filter style testing) has.
looking at the final graph, it seems that filters with the least efficiency in filtering (redundance sorry) have the best flow and capacity, and the same goes the other way, the filters with the better media have decreased flow and capacity...
Please review these for the ongoing list. Carquest Standard, Carquest Premium, Fram Drive, Fram Force and Fram Titanium all from Advance Auto Parts.
Thanks 👍
Another nice test. I have to ask where these filters are made? I think Wix and Napa moved to China.
WRONG!!! still made in NC, USA Even their PRO TEC shop filters are made in USA
I use bosch filters on my infiniti, Kia and my zero turn mower, with zero issues
I wish you re-test the purolator boss, just to make sure that the results are similar.
I like the kink in the hose on the left side surely there was no flow restriction
You mean on the bypass hose? It has no effect, we have the flow meter on the main line measuring the flow.
I'm interested in seeing the Subaru filters thats supposedly special with its valve pressure
Why wouldn't you test Fram? Seems pretty obvious. Sure some people buy some of these, but Baldwin? Never heard of it?
Great video, would love to see how different the results are with paper filters instead of canisters
awesome stuff, keep it up please!
Thank you so much for your support!
Reach out to me. I have a custom for off road use filter. This filter is going to target the racing community. Could be good future content. The objective is to filter to levels that are unable to bridge the film barrier there for minimizing, wear, and preserving internal clearances. Trying to achieve this with minimal pressure drop.
Great video!
