As a product designer and part time detailer, I’ve always thought about designing my own hose reel system. Fighting with the hose is the most annoying part of the detail for me. This is awesome, thanks Josh!
Fair warning I have the same exact setup and every 4 to 6 months I will have to basically take the whole swivel end apart and replace all of the O-rings because of the constant spinning plus the added pressure of the water forces the O-rings outward and they tend to get chopped up everytime you unwind and wind the hose back up. I get the replacement O-rings from Lowe's and their pressure washer Department the O-ring is actually the same size as some of the O-rings that are in the actual hose. Oh and you're going to want to replace the retaining clip as soon as you replace that retaining clip it will be useless because it'll be bent out of shape you can find those also at Lowe's
pretty sure he took the video off, idk why but most air hose reels are limited to like 100psi, he probably found out after or it broke on him so he took the video down idk 🤷
As of Sept 2023, I think the fitting size has changed on the input and output fitting of the reel. They're now 3/8", so you need a 3/8" to M22 adapter, not 1/4". Just FYI for anyone trying to do this. Great video!
Just hooked up the new rig to my Comet 1700. Wonderful. Josh you might want to tell people that if you let the reel unwind you have to wind it back up. Also, I got mine for $94 on amazon. My hardware was a little different than yours but all is good. I fit my 70ft Comet hose. Works great. Thanks loads! 😊
I just got the ReelWorks reel and it came with 3/8 fittings so the 1/4 adapters weren't needed, a simple 3/8 threaded male to 3/8 quick connect was all that was required. Not sure why the swivel changed, but is better not having to use all the adapters to make it work.
He pointed that out. I thought the same thing initially until rewatched it ( 1:26 ) I went with a HF reel about 2 years ago and have a 2 one now. Both are set up with an adapter (1/4M to 3/8M adapter).
Thanks for content Josh, purchase a majority of the items (mjjc foam cannon, uberflex hose, quick connects, adams mega foam) and I’ve been enjoying washing my vehicles again!
dude thanks for this video, i purchased a reel today from harbor freight that was marked down to 80$ and low and behold no one around my town sells metric fittings, lol. so off to amazon i went now i have to wait a week for the fittings to get here, but i did take the air hose off. so we wait. thanks so much
I’m a lawn nerd that’s getting into detailing. They both scratch my OCD tendencies. Anyway, one of the garden hoses I have is a retractable model from Hoselink. The convenience is a game changer. I’m just about to dig into my pressure washer setup. This video has me second guessing the idea of a Cox reel. Great stuff Josh. Your videos got me into this hobby. Keep it up bro.
The cost of a cox reel is as ridickulous as their name. I haven’t tried one mainly for that reason. I can tell you the all red retractable Merlin hose reel from HF is awesome to convert. I’d suggest watching Stay Slicks vid on that. Mines been working great for months now using a 50ft hose from Ridge Washer. No cutting or bending necessary to get the m22 connect thru the side of reel. I would suggest pulling hose out and reeling it back in with PW off and no pressure in line.
Funny you should mention this. I detail and volunteer mowing at church because of this... the church has about 11 acres and provide a JD zero turn 72" that golf courses use. One section of the yard is no less than three acres unobstructed and to put straight lines in that with that mower is quite soothing! :)
Nice video I just want to add and not sure if anyone has already commented on the fact that you don’t need to drill a new hole hole; at least on my reel I only had to grind the top of the existing hole 1/16th of an inch for the m22 male to fit. I used a flexible 50 foot hose.
Thanks, Josh! Your picture is SOOOO helpful! I’ve seen a few different videos but wasn’t able to wrap my head around all the separate pieces, their sizes and where they all belonged. With your diagram, I’m ready to head to the store/Amazone to get what I need.
Just a heads up the Amazon Basics reel video doesn't seem to be available anymore? Says it's set to private. Not sure if intentionally taken down or in error?
I was just thinking about this! I have an old harbor freight reel that I'm going to convert! Thanks for this useful information! Happy to see more of these videos come out!
This channel is on fire lately. very nicely done. Josh, I've been a subscriber for a while now. Great and awesome content. I believe that Videos and solutions like this are much needed.
Love your channel, I just invested in the amazon reel setup based off of your last video. That said, I do have some concerns using air hose reels that are not rated for the pressure setup, especially the retractable as there is more add on parts not originally designed to do what it is now doing. Stay Slick did this same thing with a HF retractable and eventually it blew out after extensive use and in heat. So I would recommend checking his latest videos as well before investing into one of these. Personally. but love your work, you are why I decided to start detailing
Just watched Slick's videos on the reel conversion and the update video and he notes that somebody he knows ran the reel with a GAS pressure washer and that one blew the o-ring seals out due to the significantly higher line pressure generated by gas powered pressure washers. He also notes that he is using the reel with an ELECTRIC pressure washer and it's fine due to the significantly lower line pressure. The only failure points would be the hose or the o-rings when the line pressure exceeds the design parameter of the hose and the o-rings. Brass and steel fittings have an incredibly high burst pressure failure point. The devil is in the details, and no pun is intended.
@@strykerentllc Slick’s conversion has 3 videos. The original, the follow up, and the failure and how to bypass (these are not the names of the videos). The last one was posted just a few days or maybe a week ago. That said, he did run it for about a year before he had problems. I imagine he could have just replaced the o-rings, but he chose to bypass the hose swivel entirely. YMMV
@@strykerentllc he runs a Ryobi and it failed after 3 or 4 months. not being negative, I just feel it should be addressed in the video as it could POTENTIALLY do major damage if you choose to keep running it and not bypass w quick connects. it isn't a fix all, is what im saying
Very nice! I’ve always been frustrated that there are so many hose reel options for air hose and nearly nine for pressure washers. I had no idea conversion was so easy. Thanks! I’m definitely making one of these as a Father’s Day gift for myself.
You can also just bend the port a little to open the port big enough to insert the hose into the connection point and the stopper on the hose you can put it over the black plastic on the Uber flex hose it fits just fine and won’t move anymore
Can you make an update on how it holds up in the long run I’ve seen a few videos on DIY hose reel set ups and seems a lot of them tend to go out and bust in short amount of time .
Josh, this is a great video. I do have a question why not purchase an Uber flex hose that just has the two mail and it will eliminate having to drill a hole in the reel
You can buy a grommet, some door edge molding, or even just slit open a small piece of rubber hose (like fuel line or windshield washer fluid hose) to make a protective edge.
@imjoshv what happened to the Amazon Basics manual hose reel video? I bought the parts from that video and came back looking for the instructions and the video is private now.
Just scrolled down the comments and see that he took it down due to people reporting issues that it did not withstand the pressure. Not certain what the specifics are around those reports. But definitely would only try this with a lower psi setup.
8:15 I would wrap a piece of red or yellow electrical tape about 5 feet from the end of the hose to warn you so you can still retract the hose without having to manually do it on the reel itself.
Thanks for sharing this mod! I got the reel in this video but the connections under item 6 didn’t work for me. I had to get 3/8 M-NPT to M-M22 from the local Home Depot Sku#: 719775. It works great and no leaks so far. There’s no need to make a hole, just bend the lip of the large opening a little bit. I also added a small piece of rubber in the clamps since this hose is thinner than the original air hose. Thanks again!
Is there a hose reel that swivels that I could use? Would love to mount on the garage wall and then fold / swivel toward the wall for out of the way solution. Great videos
This depends on the included air hose connector's adapter size. The hoses are usually 3/8in in diameter but the connectors are 1/4in NPT. Please read the specs of the reel you are converting in detail
Great video! I will weigh my options between the two or by both for my situation. It would be nice to have the retractable feature for the garden hose and the pressure washer hose. Both of mine are 100 ft. Doesn't look like those will hold that much.
Anything like this that helps with organization, flow, and efficiency bring it on! IF you want to do a whole shop organization video you're welcome to come to Illinois and we can do mine! :)
Hello Josh, I like the idea would like something similar but concerned with some of the maintenance some of the comments people are saying. Consider selling the modified version as buying tools that I won’t ever use again seems like a waste of money.
Josh, it appears that the hose that connects to the reel and pressure only has one quick connect, and since both sides are already M22 fittings, that one quick connect is missing. Needs a extra 3/8 to M22 Quick Connect 🙌🏻
I need this but idk where i would put it in my garage lol. I really need this and a air hose one too. I really need another garage just to set stuff up in so i can have more room haha
Took me awhile but I finally got my setup complete about 20 min ago. I'll test it tomorrow and see just how well it works. I caught a Merlin air hose reel on sale this past weekend at harbor freight so I picked 2 of them up. The merlin is nice and the air hose had a spring around the air hose where it goes inbetween the gap for the exterior connection. I took that spring and wound it around the pressure washer hose to give it a little more protection. It also had 2 cable holds to hold the hose in place. Instead of drilling a hole I was able to bend the gap just enough for the head of the pressure washer hose to fit and then bent it back in place. It worked out great! Everything else was super easy to connect. The only problem I had was mounting due it only being me but I got it all up and in place. Thank you for this!
That's pretty kool . Now if you could figure out a way to install a 50ft centec vac hose to it ! I bought the hose but couldn't get myself to pay 4 to 5 hundred for the setup .
You should put a piece of tape when only 3'-5' of hose is remaining, like the factory air hose probably had, and you will know when to stop pulling. Otherwise, it is easy to over-extend.
Another great IDEA for your average DIY guy! definitely would of never thought about things like that absolutely great stuff! do have a question though I’m a subscriber and watch all the time in your opinion the greenworks 2300 be good for average joe to use for cleaning car and around the house! -cause I’ve went back and watched and other psi washers you ve did numbers on!
Love to get any ideas you have for reducing pressure washer noise for people who want to keep quiet for on site clients or homeowners with attached garages and that to do early morning work.
fairly new to your channel and enjoying the content. The link for the reel on amazon says its a 3/8" but your video and link say you went from 1/4" to M22. I know this is probably a dumb question... Thanks.
I wonder, do you think you could trim the plastic off of the m22 hose end to allow it to go through the factory hole? Then use channel locks or vice grips to tighten it to the adapter and swivel?
Did you use the merlin like stay slick, or did you use the cheaper central pneumatic? I’d like to try the central pneumatic, but have not heard of anyone that’s tried it yet.
@Craig Andresen mine is the Central Pneumatic. It has been fine using it for the past 2 weeks. I believe the "cheap" comes from the air hose, which I removed. It seems like the same quality as the Walmart brand "Hyper Tough"
How easy does the reel release and retract? Planning a cart build wirh a HF US General 1 drawer cart. Inwant to make sure it wont just pull the cart (wheels locked) when i pull the hose out or pull to retract. Thanks!
Well my reel finally broke , apart from the seals always busting the only benefit is the retraction of the reel other then that it’s a headache , I would go with the manual one.
Hey Josh, I tried using the Amazon basic manual hose reel method but the power washer I hooked it up to was industrial strength and it just didn’t hold up and busted in every way possible not sure if I messed up connecting everything or it may just be compatible with lower pressure washer system , otherwise love the content !! Just ordered a Uber flex hose since watching your videos
Josh Will you do a revisit video on air dryers. I watch the review of the sgcb blower. Do you still recommend that as the best or is a air compressor set to low pressure work just as good I have a 60gal air compressor. My whole car wash setup I bought because of your recommendation and some stuff from your online store. I tried emailing you and got no response so thought I would try here. Thanks for what you do.
This is great! I did see in other videos though that this setup is only good for up to 1800 psi. Anything much beyond that (think gas pressure washer) and the seals on that swivel will blow out from what I’m reading everywhere. If anyone knows of a setup that can handle 3000 psi I’d love to know! Great video!
Hey Josh PIN THIS! FIX FOR LEAKY SWIVEL 🔨 : If your seals burst and you're frantically searching for an answer ("What swivel?? What Seal size??) Here are your answers and an easy fix especially if it happens while on a job. To have on hand/purchase: •Get Danco #9 O-rings (don't think about it too hard. Just find the #9 ones). •Get waterproof grease (usually in the same aisle as the o-rings) •Get a bit of plumber tape inside the grooves for each of the O-ring slots (one wrap around ON THE INSIDE of the groove is enough. Don't let it spill outside of the groove. It'll fold into itself, that's fine) Instructions: 1. Use the Snap ring tool to pop off the ring. (find a cheap one and keep it with you as long as you have this setup) 2. Replace the bad o-ring (or both) 3. Add the plumbers tape inside the groove and then a bit of the waterproof grease around the entire groove (lay it on top of the tape you just wrapped) 4. Slip on the new o-rings 5. Re-install the swivel joint (it should feel a bit more snug now that you have added a bit of that tape. 6. Re-install the snap-ring 7. Test it out and check for leaks. 8. Mentally prepare that it isn't a permanent fix. 9. Done.
Might be a silly question but does the hoes all reeled up effect the pressure of the machine. I got 50m don't really wanna unreal the whole thing to get the best results
Hey Josh. Any setup for a IBC 275gal tote with 2in spout setup? I would obviously want it setupt to the pressure washer then a spout for clean water for filling extractor/buckets. I currently have a Husqvarna 3200psi gas pressure washer from Costco but not sure if it has a pump built in for it to be gravity fed. Thank you
Seeing there is a lot of failures with o-rings within days sometimes. Can you do a video switching out rubber o-rings with the viton o-rings. This doesn’t seem that reliable, rated 300psi and putting 1000-2000psi thru them.
Hola Josh I am from Dominican Republic I have detailing business here I need your help I bout alredy two hose real , one retractable and the other one from daily bouth after the first months starting to leaking, can you recommend one that don’t gave me more headache please ?
You need to know the pressure failure point of the unit you are going in your m22 connection point (adapter), this would literally explode and be crazy dangerous with any of my systems. This feels like a must for your liability if you are monetized or sponsored. The unit in the video is used for are hoses at a maximum of 300psi putting thousands of pounds of water pressure could cause serious harm.
@IMJOSHV just stumbled across this video and wanted to see the video of the amazon basic setup but it seems that video is private now? Is there anyway of changing that? No worries if you can't enjoying the videos.
Hi apparently Amazon changed the connection on that reel and some people mentioned it wasn’t holding up because they shortened the thread connection. I pulled it off so no one would have any issues with the new design
As a product designer and part time detailer, I’ve always thought about designing my own hose reel system. Fighting with the hose is the most annoying part of the detail for me. This is awesome, thanks Josh!

Thank you for that update!!
Dang it, I read this too late. Thanks, but now I have to return the 1/4". Hopefully, everything else will work once it arrives.
The reel in the video is a maxworks not a reelworks. Same manufacturer 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah… just discovered that this very minute 😢
Why my 3/8 is not fitting I order one is too big
Just hooked up the new rig to my Comet 1700. Wonderful. Josh you might want to tell people that if you let the reel unwind you have to wind it back up. Also, I got mine for $94 on amazon. My hardware was a little different than yours but all is good. I fit my 70ft Comet hose. Works great. Thanks loads! 😊
I would suggest a grommet for the hole that was drilled but otherwise great stuff!
I was thinking the same.
Great call. Where can you find a grommet that size? Link?
You can use a rubber u channel and cut to size
The amount of value and time saving you provide is unsurpassed. Thank you 🙏
Hey Josh the Amazon Basics video is unavailable, and I was wondering if it would be up soon

Same the listed fitting is 1/4 mm2 but needs to be 3/8 🤦♂️
He pointed that out.
I thought the same thing initially until rewatched it ( 1:26 )
I went with a HF reel about 2 years ago and have a 2 one now. Both are set up with an adapter (1/4M to 3/8M adapter).
Great video josh thank you for getting this idea out to a larger audience than mine.
I seen your video and the merlin one is a little cheaper at $99 bucks

I got the reel in this video but the connections under item 6 didn’t work for me. I had to get 3/8 M-NPT to M-M22 from the local Home Depot Sku#: 719775.
It works great and no leaks so far.
There’s no need to make a hole, just bend the lip of the large opening a little bit. I also added a small piece of rubber in the clamps since this hose is thinner than the original air hose.
Thanks again!
Awesome!!
Agreed looks like Josh’s had a plug but mine did not so I followed this 3/8 to m22 setup and works great

Another great video! Thanks dude!
Love to get any ideas you have for reducing pressure washer noise for people who want to keep quiet for on site clients or homeowners with attached garages and that to do early morning work.
Hi josh, can you tell me how to move the guide arm up and down and what tools sre needed?
Bada$$ brotha!! Appreciate your dedication abd sharing the knowledge!!
Thank you! Happy to do it
The link on the basic hose reel video doesn't work. It says: this is a private video. Is it just for me or for everyone?
great ideai..!!!you think i can fit 100ft hose on the one in your video?
Hey Josh, nice video! I just wanted to ask, what part do I pop out. It was mentioned at 5:52
fairly new to your channel and enjoying the content.
No because the plastic houses the threads themselves
I just made the cheap one and now you hit me with this..😅
Haha I know…. Both are great options!
Josh , the air hose reel is rated at 300 p.s.I.. The sprayer puts out 800-1000 p.s.i. Make sure the fitting can handle the pressure.
If you have a Harbor freight they have this style of reel for $70 on sale right now
Thanks for the idea. If I am using a gas powered machine, will that reel take that bug pressure like 3300 3400psi?
Hey Josh I like the commercial grade hoses since I do this everyday those hoses never last for me I’m sure it will still work what’s your thoughts?
Just did this, too. Mine was $69 on a sale at Harbor Freight this past weekend.
Awesome deal!
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that hose reel, next time it goes on sale ill have to pick one up
Did you use the merlin like stay slick, or did you use the cheaper central pneumatic? I’d like to try the central pneumatic, but have not heard of anyone that’s tried it yet.
@Craig Andresen mine is the Central Pneumatic. It has been fine using it for the past 2 weeks. I believe the "cheap" comes from the air hose, which I removed. It seems like the same quality as the Walmart brand "Hyper Tough"
How easy does the reel release and retract? Planning a cart build wirh a HF US General 1 drawer cart. Inwant to make sure it wont just pull the cart (wheels locked) when i pull the hose out or pull to retract. Thanks!
If you cut the plastic off the metal m22 fitting, you can run it through the orignal hole.
Where’s the video showing the manual hose reel I can’t seem to find it? Really want to put a manual one together.
Josh
Will you do a revisit video on air dryers.
Mine is working on a 2600psi greenworks model
@@jasonsage1404how’s yours holding up? Have you had it long?
Hey Josh PIN THIS!
FIX FOR LEAKY SWIVEL 🔨 :
If your seals burst and you're frantically searching for an answer ("What swivel?? What Seal size??) Here are your answers and an easy fix especially if it happens while on a job.
To have on hand/purchase:
•Get Danco #9 O-rings (don't think about it too hard. Just find the #9 ones).
•Get waterproof grease (usually in the same aisle as the o-rings)
•Get a bit of plumber tape inside the grooves for each of the O-ring slots (one wrap around ON THE INSIDE of the groove is enough. Don't let it spill outside of the groove. It'll fold into itself, that's fine)
Instructions:
1. Use the Snap ring tool to pop off the ring. (find a cheap one and keep it with you as long as you have this setup)
2. Replace the bad o-ring (or both)
3. Add the plumbers tape inside the groove and then a bit of the waterproof grease around the entire groove (lay it on top of the tape you just wrapped)
4. Slip on the new o-rings
5. Re-install the swivel joint (it should feel a bit more snug now that you have added a bit of that tape.
6. Re-install the snap-ring
Thank you
Was the Amazon Basics hose reel video taken down? I can't find it and link does not work.
I guess because that one isnt meant to be pressure washer use
Can this accommodate a 50’ x 5/8” diameter flexzilla garden hose? Is it safe to be mounted outside?
@IMJOSHV just stumbled across this video and wanted to see the video of the amazon basic setup but it seems that video is private now? Is there anyway of changing that? No worries if you can't enjoying the videos.
Thanks again! 🙏
My pleasure!
How do I watch the Amazon basic review reel one? It says private it would really help out a lot thank you!
Hi apparently Amazon changed the connection on that reel and some people mentioned it wasn’t holding up because they shortened the thread connection. I pulled it off so no one would have any issues with the new design
What size of the pressure washer hose and air hose that you recommend? 1/4” or 3/8”.
Hey Josh, can you make the Amazon Basics video public? I pressed on the link and it says that it’s private
