    This is the definition of talent. My gosh. At this age? Or I should say at any age if one shows this level of musicality then he/she is absolutely a master. What’s in her mind actually? How can she also be this precise in using that instrument to express her deep emotions? How many lives has she lived, really? Just…..unbelievable…..🥲

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      While (as you know), I share your wonderment at the extraordinary emotional depth and sensitivity that Chloe displays in this recital (and of course everywhere else), my reflections go off in what I think is a different direction.
      A natural view, and one that might be read into your questions, is that in order to express such profound emotions, Chloe must first bring them to the stage, so to speak - and so be somehow unusually mature - and then find a way of expressing them in performance.
      But I think this cannot be right. By all accounts, outside of music Chloe is a normal child. In the comments under the Atlanta Mendelssohn, someone who attended the festival - "Lyra Chen" (the sister of the conductor perhaps?) - says "When I met her, Chloe was very childlike and playful, so unlike her stage performance." And this local article about the Festival/Chloe makes this much evident: see the photo towards the end of Chloe holding a picture, basically beside herself with childish glee when playing with two friends who look even younger. (The article is machine-translatable.)
      atlanta.americachineselife.com/%E8%8B%A5%E6%95%8F%EF%BC%9A%E7%90%B4%E5%BC%A6%E4%B8%8A%E7%9A%84%E8%AF%97/
      So to understand the emotional depth and intensity of Chloe's performances we have to look not in her character but elsewhere.
      In my view we need look no further than the music itself! The emotions Chloe expresses on stage are not emotions she brings _to_ the music: rather, they are _in_ the music, and all she does is bring them out (and so of course experiences them when so doing).
      Of course, the question arises as to how she manages to do that. But again the answer is relatively simple: her technique enables her to perform the composition in accordance with her understanding of it, and so of how it should be played, and so with the emotions that are in it.
      To have such understanding just _is_ to be so musical! That is, performance does not require two things of an instrumentalist in addition to technique - namely character (deep and mature emotion) and musicality - but only one - musicality - since to be so very musical just _is_ to be able to perceive the deep and profound feelings that are embedded in the greatest works.
      In other words, I think "musicality" is both modularised and rich/broad. Because it is modularised, a child can have it without consequences for other aspects of the child's mind. In this respect, it is like chess- or maths- genius. But because it is rich/broad, it does have consequences for musical expressiveness: one can no more hive off emotional depth from musicality than one can hive off e.g. pattern-recognition from chess- genius.
      I guess what I am suggesting boils down to this. If e.g. the latest extraordinary victory by a grandmaster aged 12 doesn't incline one to pursue thoughts of past lives and the like, neither should Chloe's extraordinary performances on stage.

    Warm heart, brilliant mind, skillful hands, sharp ears and the most important thing - perfect musical sense and taste for details.
    Did I forgot anything? OMG to interpret Beethoven is not a piece of cake even for experienced musician. It need's life experience to play Beethoven properly. But in this case you have the example how to get enough life experience for playing Beethoven in 11 years.
    Wonderful. Just extraordinary and exceptional and amazing performance.For me it was peak of the year 2018 in the field of music.I think Christian Li was not bad, but Chloe is absolutely on different level. She is much much much better.

      Where’s your logic
      Actually you don’t need to be better than her to give an opinion. Or else all sports commentators would lose their job. Another example: when you’re talking about politics and criticising politicians you wouldn’t expect yourself to do better than them right? Even if you do, that’s not what gives you the right to comment about them. That right comes from freedom of speech.
      Ps I like her by the way. It’s just that your logic annoys me.

    There is an odd man out here. Separate videos have been made of the Piazzola and, respectively, the Hubay, but the Beethoven hardly gets a mention.
    Yet, like her Bach in the first round, it is extremely fine.
    Chloe is to engage with more Bach - this time going one better with BWV 1017 - in her recital on 13 August at the Copenhagen Summer Festival. I wonder how long it will be before she takes on more Beethoven.

    • @charity1239
      @charity1239 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yes, Chloe played with her entire being, fully immersed in the emotions of the pieces she was playing. That was why her playing could bring tears to people's eyes.

    • @andrewroberts8139
      @andrewroberts8139 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, that one defies all my understanding of the world. You would think you'd have to have lots of grown-up experiences to play that Piazzolla, say, but she hasn't. Maybe she understands the emotion through the music rather than the other way round?

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@andrewroberts8139 I certainly think it is possible that Chloe should come to know new depths of emotion, or even new emotions, from the music she performs. Her musicality - her ability to grasp the meaning of what she is playing - is really remarkable.
      But I'm not convinced that the Piazzolla really does have emotional content that is alien to children. The object or context of the love, joy, longing, loss, sadness etc. in Piazzolla is, of course, alien to children, but those feelings themselves seem to me to be quite commonly familiar to them. Don't many or even most children have intense experiences of such emotions in relation to their own lives and the lives of others around them?
