    WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756 - 1791)
    Violin Concerto No. 2 in D major, K.211 (1775)
    0:00 I. Allegro moderato
    10:20 II. Andante
    18:42 III. Rondeau. Allegro
Mozart’s violin concerti present a strange musicological problem: they were composed in a short period of time, but it is not clear what occasion prompted their creation, or who they were written for. A story is sometimes told that Mozart had been so inspired by a meeting with Haydn that he produced these five concerti in the span of half a year, but this sequence of events is more reliably attached to the six string quartets published as Opus 10, nicknamed the “Haydn Quartets”. Those came later, and are actually dedicated to Haydn. To add further to the muddle, the manuscripts of Mozart’s violin concerti had their dates tampered with: the fifth concerto had its 1775 date scratched out and replaced with 1780, and then changed back to 1775; for a long time, three other concerti were confused as Mozart’s, and given various numbers. In any case, these concerti were all composed before his likely first encounter with Haydn, though Mozart would already have been well aware of Haydn’s music long before then.
What is certain about the ones that are definitely Mozart’s (No. 1-5) is that they show him as a confident and youthful composer with a masterful command of string technique. Mozart was a world-class keyboardist and also an accomplished violinist, although he preferred playing the viola. The violin writing in these works is brilliant, always delicately poised against the orchestral forces. The first two show Mozart in ebullient form, and are perhaps the more difficult of the lot, with virtuosic writing involving very high solo lines.
Listen out for operatic elements in this concerto: by this point, Mozart had already written a dozen operas, including the highly accomplished La finta giardiniera, and this can be heard in the way groups of instruments interact. The pair of oboes add weight to orchestral tutti, anchoring the high violin lines. A lively first movement gives way to a wonderfully expansive pastorale, in which the oboes and horns punctuate cadences and act as signal-bearers for the solo violin. The rondo-finale actually opens with the violin solo leading the theme, an especially Mozartean touch, and dances its way to an exuberant end. (Programme notes: Thomas Ang)
    CHLOE CHUA (b. 2007)
Young violinist Chloe Chua's meteoric rise on the classical music concert stage culminated in being awarded the joint 1st prize at the 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists.
The 13-year-old from Singapore had also garnered the top prize at the 24th Andrea Postacchini Violin Competition, and the 3rd prize at the 2017 Zhuhai International Mozart Competition. She has also been awarded prizes at Thailand International Strings Competition (Junior Category Grand Prize), Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition (1st Prize, Junior 2017, 3rd Prize Junior 2015).
She has been enrolled in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts School of Young Talents (NAFA) since she was four, and is currently under the tutelage of Yin Ke, leader of their Strings programme.
Her stunning maturity and musicality has captured the hearts of audience around the world, and her performances have taken her to concerts hall across the U.K, Thailand, Italy, Germany, China, Saudi Arabia, USA and Singapore, and in festivals such as the New Virtuosi Queenswood Mastercourse, Atlanta Festival Academy and the Singapore Violin Festival.
More recently, she has performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, China Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, AFA festival Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, Russian National Youth Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Yuri Bashme , Kammerorchester Basel conducted by Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli and the China Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Xia Xiaotang.
She performs on a violin by Peter Guarneri of Venice, 1729, on generous loan from the Rin Collection.

As a casual fan of classical, I’m not sure what it is I love so much about her playing. Practically speaking, there are obviously many virtuoso violin players like Midori, Hahn, Etc. But for whatever reason, I don’t feel the connection to the music like I do when I hear Chloe play. I wonder what it is, the fun TwoSet connection, being a prodigy, or what. But her playing sounds so pure and I love it.

To me, her pacing is what makes me connect to her. She's never in a rush. She always has plenty of time to approach the next note a good as she can. She is capable of playing the most technically challenging pieces, but seems to be only interested in the musical aspect. Technique is purely a tool, never a goal with her. Those are my 2cts.

Chloe performed Vaughan Williams "The Lark Ascending" a few hours ago on 2 April 2021 in the Victoria Hall (Singapore) with the Re:Sound Collective.
Judging by her sublime performance of Massenet's similarly visionary "Meditation" from Thais, I think this must have been a profound and very moving occasion. I hope she and her audience alike were transported by the beauty of the piece.

Today, the 13th of April, is the 3rd anniversary of Chloe's recital in the first round of the Menuhin Competition. As she stepped on to the stage, she could have had absolutely no inkling of how her life would be transformed over the next few days, let alone of what she would go on to have achieved by now. Although she performed the Bach with which her recital began extremely beautifully, it is clear that she did not enjoy the self-belief and on-stage well-being that is manifest in even her semi-final performance four days later, to say nothing of the magic she conjured up in the final.
That her recital turned out to be so well received must have been a huge boost. How fitting then that we can celebrate its 3rd anniversary by delighting in the world class Mozart she gives to us here, and that views of her performance in the Menuhin final will pass 5 million tomorrow!
How fitting too that she is going to revisit Bach-for the first time, I believe-when she performs BWV 1017 at the Copenhagen Summer Festival this August! Her so doing will surely prove that she is as great an interpreter of Bach (and the Baroque) as we now know her to be of Mozart (and the Classical).
(Her “2018 Winners” recital, which is to be streamed on 18 May on the Menuhin Competition’s channel, features three
completely pieces; and, not to be outdone, her Festival recital features four more! Her program is here

Actually, Maria has yet to update her list with two further videos of tracks from Chloe's forthcoming CD - the Largo of Winter, and the first movement from the Locatelli concerto.
Sadly, these videos have flown completely under the radar. Both have only a few hundred views.
This is especially unfortunate in the case of the Locatelli, since the cadenza in it is one of Chloe's greatest and most mind-boggling achievements.
Here is the link, not just to the Locatelli but specifically to the start of the cadenza. The sound is so rich and complex that the average listener would think that Chloe is accompanied by the orchestra. But in reality, and incredibly, from this point on she performs solo for 2 minutes and 30 seconds straight.

Chloe's music is truly expressing. It is not her playing Mozart's piece. It is her telling her own story. Throuhg a true artist's performance we communicate directly with them. I watched a lot of Chloe's performances and she always plays herself, not like anyone, not for anyone, not even through the composer. Genius is supposed to be 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration but in this case, it has to be 100% of each. It is the only way this makes sense to me that Chloe is able to play like this with flawless technique, the beauty of tone, and such a musical imagination at this age.

    • @jackburgess274
      @jackburgess274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yes, Chloe is extremely hard-working and dedicated to her art - and she is the mother of all geniuses.
Her musical imagination appears limitless: from Baroque, through Classical, the entire sweep of Romanticism across the whole of the 19C, early mid and late 20C, and even 21C, her musical understanding is so deep, and so natural, that everything fits her like a glove.
While she swings with Gershwin and tangos with Piazzolla like the coolest teenager on the planet, she is also religious, and her approach to the sacred is transcendent and beyond compare.
In this latter regard, I cannot recommend highly enough her "The Lark Ascending" and "Meditation" (the rehearsal with the SSO - not the live performance, which is spoilt by background noice and acoustic issues). These performances are radiant and luminous visions of the divine. Both are on her channel.

Chloe's performance of Mozart's violin concerto #4 at the Zhuhai competition in 2017, when she was just 10, remains delightful and uplifting. But that she should have transitioned in just three years to such exquisite refinement, sensitivity and command as are on display here is a magnificent achievement.
Most if not all of her fans are familiar with the Zhuhai performance, but I suspect many will be surprised to learn that she already has a third Mozart violin concerto up her sleeve - namely, #1 - having performed it at the opening concert of the Festival of Nations in Bad Worishofen in September 2019.
I know of no video, but an account in the local press by a very admiring reviewer, who admits to having been somewhat incredulous at what he was witnessing, can be found on-line.

I played this concerto 35 years ago for an exam, but I played another cadenza, written by a professor of the violin from Leipzig, Mr. Thiemann. The other concertos by Mozart are technically mor difficult. I still remember well. I watch already for a long time, that the after-growing violinists practize and play firstly always all these virtouos pieces from the 19. century (Saint-Saens, Ysaye, Paganini, Vieuxtemps usw.) and then come the great concerts from the 18. and 19. century: Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Beethoven, Dvorak, Brahms. Perhaps, these pieces are really the most beautiful ones , what there are as sheets for concerto musik for the violin. Chloe plays very mature and musically.

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Absolutely!
That Chloe is miraculously gifted musically has always been clear even in her performances of technically demanding pieces such as Sarasate's Carmen and Wieniawski's Variation on an Original Theme.
But Mozart tests an instrumentalist's musicality to the absolute limit, and on this occasion Chloe passes it flying colours that I think none of her peers can match.
(As you say, ditto Bach. The Bach with which she began her recital in the first round of Menuhin 2018 likewise exudes fantastic musicality. It is surely no accident that she is going to revisit Bach--for the very first time I believe--in her 13 August recital at the Copenhagen Summer Festival.)
