    Nice to see you admitting making a mistake, kudos for that.
    I couldn't figure out which constellation it was, It looked like it was back to front and upside down, had me scratching my head.
    You could always say it's a star map as seen on the far side of the galaxy, no one would ever know ;)

    • @sateviss7711
      @sateviss7711 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, my first idea was that it was something southern, but then there was an image of that star "map" with one of the poles in the middle (at 1:56) but then there was no Southern Cross in the finished thing, so I quickly realised something was piscy. Pun clearly intended.

      Her accent sounds very LA + midwestern, as if she used television to train away her accent :P I don't think her particular accent actually exists, but is a generic representation. Regardless, I never would have suspected it was fake, only that she has a well trained public speaking voice, which is actually pretty ideal.

    You could probably take a long exposure picture of the night sky, zoom in and run an edge detection algorithm on it, export it, and from that create the star map that you can cut out.

  • @Excludos

    Quick question, as I have never used a laser cutter: Why did the walls have to be half circles? Couldn't you have just laser cut complete circles, so you wouldn't have those seams running up the sides?

    • @donkriegnaszojcze
      @donkriegnaszojcze 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I assume it's because half circles can be packed way more efficiently, so you waste way less material. Otherwise the insides of the circles would all go to waste

    With all the trillions of stars in the galaxy/universe there's a pretty good chance that from one viewpoint or another you'd get a star map that looks just like that.

  • @KarlRoyale
    @KarlRoyale 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could just download an open source image of a constellation shrink it to fit properly then cut/drill out the pattern. You could also download a planetarium display set to the right time of year you want and do the same or Use the North Pole as a center hole and place the other stars in relationship to that and probably be able to display 80% of the Northern Hemisphere. Too close to the equator would probably be too difficult to map properly unless the finished model was much larger. PLEASE do not give up! Keep at it. You could also look into an array of mini LED's on a strip to make the wiring much easier or even use the a few LED arrays out of the cheap dollar store flashlights.

  • @rogerhwerner6997
    @rogerhwerner6997 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some folks would recognize that your 'star map' look kinda mmm...the dots are too random and the sizes of the dots look wrong. But so what? Only someone knowing what star charts look like would recognize this. Your project is a lovely idea and a very thoughtful gift. Why not make one a little larger that shows well known constellations like the Polaris and the Big and Little dippers, the Southern Cross, Orion, and Casioppia for example. I'd buy at least one.

    There's always a little bit of 'iteration' no matter how new the project seems. And really, as big as the universe is, that 'fake' star chart almost certainly looks pretty real from somewhere in the cosmos. Sorta like it's always beer:30 somewhere on this planet.

      As someone who actually tested pointing a high-powered laser (still nowhere near a laser cutter, it was handheld) on his hand, this hurts like hell. It's like having a needle going through your body, but at a smaller point.
      The laser in this video would probably cut the finger so deeply that it would have to be removed.

    • @agate_jcg
      @agate_jcg 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      These laser cutters have safety interlock switches that shut off the beam if the door is open or someone tries to take them apart, kinda like a microwave oven. You'd have to work really hard to cut your finger off.
