    Sealion's plans called for them to to use tug boats as main landing craft with raft behind them as the Germans had vary little landing craft and they did not make any because they were only prototypes

      @jamesmortimer4016 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well... a succesfull invasion and victory over GB would have been bloody to say the least. And it would have taaken time i guess it would end in a horribly weakened germany getting steamrolled by stalin in summer 1942

      If D-Day was lost, nothing would change really, Germany was already collapsing to the Soviets, and the Italian Campaign was succeeding for Britain. But it could end up making Places like France Communist, and etc.

      England is a very hard nut to crack militarily but they are extremely paranoid about spies and terrorists so you could tear them apart from the inside, like what ISIS tried to do.
      It is the fact that the United Kingdom as a whole lives in a stable but precarious situation. United they are invincible to everything but if you reignite old wounds they beat each other senseless

  • @noneofyourbusiness9489

    The only way they really could have pulled it off would be if they had wiped out the British at Dunkirk, invaded a month or two later, and gotten very, very, lucky.

    DiplexHeated you should start a new Alternate WWII series from scratch and make it be the entire war, maybe have one video for it a week. You could make it a version where Germany didn't go to war with Russia until after they had already secured all of Europe Great Britan included. The United States did join the war after pearl harbor but they only went to war with Japan with a twist, Canada and Mexico joined the Americans against Japan Fearing a Japanese Invasion of the Pacific Coast in their lands as well.

    • @summer20105707
      @summer20105707 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Canada went to war with Japan due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hong Kong and Malaya. As a matter of fact Canada lost troops on day 1 due to the attack on Hong Kong. So there wouldn't be much difference in that sense.

    Who was the idiot who thought that landing craft was a good idea?
    “Oh ya let’s make a small, narrow craft with only one exit to the front and make it very high so the only real way out is the front. Let’s also make it super cramped so our troops are packed like sardines.”

    • @danconti5984
      @danconti5984 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Gott mit Uns not true. It only makes it easier as a machine gun with a narrow cone to fill in can cause extreme havoc. If a machine gun has to spread its arc across a large area, it’s effectiveness is severely reduced as it cannot suppress as effectively. It’s why you always flank a machine gun to its sides. If you spread out, it has a harder time getting all of you or is forced to focus on one group, meaning the other group can move up and take it out.
      But if it only has to focus on a small area to suppress, then it can literally mow down everyone.
      That design does no favors.

      Dan Lorenzana It was the only logical option, you couldn't have the ramp behind the ship, or on the sides, the original version of the Higgins boats didn't have a ramp the troops just jumped over the side but during testing it showed limbs would be broken and people would drown

    • @danconti5984
      @danconti5984 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why not send it through the back? Just have it open towards the rear sides or allow them to squeeze through 1 by 1. Even then the casualty rate would be significantly lower.

    The Germans would not be in those landing crafts, they only had 2 prototypes for a similar craft in 1940, chances are they'd be arriving in barges and river boats.

    • @DavBlc7
      @DavBlc7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep and they're too slow and would simply be destroyed by Royal Navy warships and RAF aircraft.
      But even if the Germans were successful in invading parts of Britain, The Royal Navy would block German supply ships and RAF would shot down supply planes. I think that may be why bombers were needed to destroy RAF airfields and they failed thanks to Hitler's order to destroy London thus diverting bombers from airfield to the capital and this gave the pilots time to rest then shot down more bombers over London on Sept 15th. Hitler postponed the invasion the next month.
      The 2 prototypes landing crafts were developed by the Americans, not Germans and used in many allied operations against both the Germans and the Japanese like in the D-Day operation.

      It wasn't as straightforward as that. A sea invasion would have been incredibly fraught - they did not have air superiority because Goering was a tactical moron, and the Kriegsmarine was massively outgunned and outnumbered by the Royal Navy. There is then the problem of supply lines.

    You should make it into a 3 part series. Part 2 could be the German Blitzkrieg across the English countryside with German Paratroopers going behind enemy lines. Part 3 could be the Battle of London where the British somehow manage to hold out after some US marines stationed in England come to their aid.

      @wolfmanyx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Hartley I was thinking maybe the United States in a theoretical scenario could have some men stationed in England for training, just in case the Germans invaded and the British needed some back up. I realize the timeline doesn’t work for having marines there because the US wasn’t involved in the war until after Pearl Harbor

    • @nickp1999

      I want to make that, but making an English village and especially London would be really hard because all the buildings in the editor cater to French, German, and Russian architecture. England's buildings look different and I would want to make it as authentic as possible, I don't just want it to look like another random "village battle" map.

    The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst ran a very detailed war game with real Admirals in 1974. The battle played out over a week with very intense planning from both sides. Sea Lion started on set conditions of September 19, 1940. The German forces delayed the invasion as long as they could to try to gain air superiority, which they could not, and then push ahead with the invasion anyway. Basically the first German wave managed to take the beach, push inland and hold ports at Folkestone and Newhaven, which the British team had scuttled by this time to make them useless. The Germans successfully landed 80,000 thousands troops. The British team, put up little resistance to the ground invasion as it focused on maneuvering the Home Fleet. The gains by the Germans were quickly diminished as the Royal Navy eventually over powered and destroyed the German Naval forces in the Channel, preventing the Second and Third wave from crossing. Without re-enforcements or supply, the 80,000 troops were stuck in a pocket, with their backs to the channel, where they were eventually forced to surrender. It became a reverse Dunkirk.

      not really...it would be a slaughter...nothing short of a Tiger Tank could stand up to the M1A1's, and the Japanese would be destroyed...they had shitty tanks, the planes would be shot out of the sky, their ships blown out of the water from miles away, without even a cannon round being fired...while it could be funny...it would not be entertaining

    When would Germany have been able to actually execute some kind of Operation Sea Lion? Never. We have to remember the Allies had total air supremacy and two of the three greatest naval powers of the time working together for Normandy. It still took a massive amount of time and resources to prepare. The Kriegsmarine had no real chance against the Royal Navy and Germany had absolutely no experience with an amphibious of the scale needed. A possible invasion of Britain would have been infinitely more complex than the Invasion of Norway was.

    • @billwilson7841
      @billwilson7841 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Viktor Wasielewski
      Its 1940, Not 1944.
      1940 was a whole other Situation, in the late Summer, the Luftwaffe was about to Beat the RAF by bombing the airfields and plane Factories, for every Spitfire Germany had 3 Messerschmitt Fighter Planes,
      also france just surrendered and the coastal positions at cherbourgh, la Rochelle and Brest were perfect for German submarines and the Rest of the navy.
      USA still was neutral and the soviets (kinda) Allied with Germany.
      Germany also occupied Norway and sweden, and the submarines sunk more and more ships after each month, it was the "Golden time" for the Submarine fleet
      It was a Close call, brits nearly lost the Battle of britian.
      Also the Kriegsmarine didnt had to Beat Britian with the navy, the submarines we're about to Cut every supply they get by sea, they would Just starved and had No Oil to operate with ships or Planes.
      speaking of expierince in amphibious warfare;
      Germany occupied many Islands and Landscape by sea During the 1917/1918 uprise in Russia, Operation Albion ist the best example.
      The US took notes of this for Normandy, because they had No expierince in amphibious warfare aswell.

    • @viktorwasielewski5687
      @viktorwasielewski5687 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And you think that a naval invasion that took years for two of the greatest naval powers on Earth to plan and execute could have been done by a second-rate naval power on a whim? Without any large scale preparation? The U-boats mainly sunk merchant ships, and they did not manage to stave the Brits into surrender despite several great successes early on. The British actually replaced the lost shipping at a remarkable speed and even managed to outproduce the tonnage lost when much more effective ASW systems and tactics were developed later on.
      And the Battle of Britain was not a close call, it was a decisive British victory. In september of 1940 the Luftwaffe thought it had brought the RAF down to 177 operational fighters while in reality the British actually had over 570 operational fighters remaining, about 300% higher than the German estimate. The Luftwaffe then started to strike industrial facilities and C3I sites. The target switch from airfields to other installations was indeed an error by the Germans but much less significant than many think. If they had continued to strike the airfields the Luftwaffe would still have lost, just less quickly and less badly.
      Even if by some miracle the Germans would have won in the skies, in summer 1940 they only had 3 cruisers and 4 destroyers operational in the region. The British RN Home Fleet had 5 Capital Ships/1 Carrier/11 Cruisers/8 Destroyers. In addition to this the Germans had no really tested amphibious assault equipment, had nowhere near the needed experience and no amphibious logistics systems to speak of. And we all know how much trouble the Allies had during the planning and execution of the Normandy Landings, even when they had all the things above that the Germans sorely lacked in 1940. Like I said, Seelöwe was a fantasy.

      omfg, how do people like you exist...
      Ok, let me put this as simple as possible for you to understand.
      U-boats cannot sink ships. Yes, they can sink defenseless Merchantmen. And yes, they can sink warships. But they can only strike with the element of surprise. Once they fire those torpedoes, if they don't run away they are fucked. And neither could they fight effectively against destroyers who were increasingly being designed to sink them.
      So let's imagine your hypothetical scenario. German invasion has begun. Rickety barges slowly cross the channel. Their protection? A few light ships of the Kriegsmarine, nothing heavier than a light cruiser. Nothing heavy because at this point most of your fantasy battleships are blockaded in ports by the Royal Navy or have been sunk. The Germans have also scrounged together a few U-Boats. The Luftwaffe, drained by commitments in Operation Barbarossa and it's repeated defeats in trying to takes the skies of Britain, can barely scrounge a few squadrons.
      Suddenly, the Home Fleet appears on the horizon. British intelligence knew about the invasion the minute the Further ordered preparations be made. Their attempts to hide the invasion from them and the French resistance was laughable. The troops in the barges panic. A few overturn, simply being river barges, and not used to the swell of the rougher Channel. Already the fleet has opened fire and is sending boats by the dozen to the bottom. Thousands are already dead. The Kriegsmarine moves in. Admiral Brock Gundich assured them that the U-Boats were more than a match for any surface ship. They fire, a few ships are sunk. A cheer rings out. However the Home Fleet is the largest fleet on the planet in the largest navy on the planet. It easily bears such losses. Destroyer squadrons move in. The U-Boats have nowhere to run. Both sides of the Channel are blocked. A dozen subs sink the the bottom as they are located and destroyed piecemeal.
      In the air above another battle is taking place between the Luftwaffe and the RAF. The Luftwaffe can do nothing against the Royal Navy. They have only managed to sink a few destroyers as they have no dedicated anti ship planes or weaponry, the best they can muster is dive bombers. The RAF manages to push them back, aided by the supportive anti aircraft fire of the Navy below. The Luftwaffe falls back in retreat.
      Now nothing stands between the Royal Navy and the transports of the German troops. And the slaughter begins. Because sending a hundred thousand to the bottom of the channel and be called nothing else, not when they've been sent their on the orders of a Wehraboo who thought that U-boats were somehow the only cover the invasion needed and would be more than a match for the largest fleet on the planet.

      The ridiculousness of this scenario has already been pointed out, so I'll just contribute a fun fact. During the early years of the war Britain actually destroyed large numbers of their major ports and roads leading from them in order to prevent the Germans from parachuting or landing a small force, capturing a major port and then shipping in large quantities of supplies. Any German force that did land in the UK, as for example the video shows, would soon find itself surrounded, cut off from supplies and forced to surrender.

    except in 1940 the Germans had no Landing craft except river barges. Also The british were going to used poison gas to protect their own shores. And finally we were going to pump oil into the sea and set fire to it. I would like you to include that in the vid.

    Battle of Trafalgar is considered our greatest victory due to the simple fact that if we lost to the armada of French and Spanish ships then Napoleon would have been able to land on Britain and defeat the British army because the French Grand Armee was the best in the world at this point in 1805. This is basically the same for the Battle of Britain. If somehow the Germans were able to defeat the Royal Air Force then defeat the Royal Navy then Germany would have been able to land their Army and would have defeated the British army since the war at this point was in Germany's favor and their army was far superior to any other nations armies in the early stages of the war (Prussian officers are no joke bro). Look at how the Germans crushed the combined might of the British Empires force, French forces, Dutch forces and Belgium forces in matter of weeks in the battle of France. The island we dwell on is our greatest defense. Prior to the 20th century you just had to defeat the Royal Navy to land on Britain, now you have to go through the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, which any nation would struggle to achieve even to this day.

      So what are you saying exactly? Are you saying If Napoleon defeated the Royal Navy then landed on Britain, Napoleons army would have been defeated? So Trafalgar is not that important to Britain maintaining it's sovereignty since the British army would have defeated Napoleon anyways, Trafalgar or not?
      Napoleon had a far larger army, largest amount of field artillery and Napoleon would have lead his forces himself, which of course was the most dangerous out of them all. The British army was no match 1 v 1 against Napoleon at this point (and through out the war since Napoleon won the vast majority of Battles he personally commanded himself) hence the fact for coalitions and numerous coalitions for that matter throughout the entire war, to slowly wipe out his other forces commanded by his generals, not by him. The coalition made it clear to not openly engage forces led by the Emperor himself but to fight his generals to weaken the overall French Grande Armee. 1805 was in Napoleons favor in land combat and the British high command understood that, so they made sure the Emperor did not get a chance to land on Britain, for if he did then he would have conquered Britain. That is why the Battle of Trafalgar is our most important battle( voted by our people and our historians), as it is the battle that could have ended us if we had lost it (Battle of Britain comes second for the same reasons). The French navy never recovered after that battle. So now Britain could take the war forward knowing it's island is protected from further possible invasion and the Emperor is now forced to stay on mainland Europe to fight. and Britain can take it to him, with their multiple coalitions.

    Germany could not have beaten Britain on their own turf after 1943, It would have to be, in my eyes, immediately after Dunkirk, and though the Germans would suffer at the hands of the Royal Navy and Air force, I think they could land enough equipment and troops to be successful.

      After ww2 there was a table top war games using real plans and real war commanders. Britain basically built nothing but artillery after Dunkirk. Massive country wide "stop lines" of artillery were created that the Germans just couldn't breach. They wouldn't have a solid air or sea lane to transport supplies. Every cenario ended with a German defeat though a sizable beach head was always achieved. Britain knew it couldn't stop a landing so never intended to... All mass landings succeed so plan was to wear them down with big guns on land and from sea.

    The way they would have had to do it is take out the allied army at Dunkirk so they don't have a army to defend. next win the battle of Britain by focusing on the royal air force grind them to dust like they where doing at first. then start sending in ju 52 and gliders with the bombers to drop in paratroopers to take a port then bring in the naval troops use the Luftwaffe to keep the royal navy out of the channel then after that use planes to drop off supplies and the occasional supply boat then they have to take London they need marines to attack from the south and paratroops to attack the city from the north so the PM and the MP can't escape and that is how they could force a surrender to then take the royal navy for themselves.

    • @PanzerIVAE
      @PanzerIVAE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      >so they don't have an army to defend
      Even if the entire force in Dunkirk was destroyed the Germans would still have quite a number of Army Divisions in Britain to deal with along with the British Homeguard that numbers in well over a million
      >win the battle of britain
      The Battle of Britain was doomed to fail because of various different factors even if the Germans didn't do the dumb decision to attack civilian targets. Who knew its really hard to fight effectively when the British can literally detect the German planes taking off from their bases in France with their radar
      >drop paratroopers
      You mean that 1 paratrooper division Germany had along with that normal Wehrmacht division given airborne equipment without training? Good luck with that against an enemy's mainland that isn't some poor Scandinavian country you decided to surprise attack
      >take a port
      Again, good luck with that against over a million enemy troops garrisoned in various ports
      But let's say those 2 divisions manage to land successfully and despite all odds take a port, what now? The British Navy is still a thing and they'll just be starved out in whatever port they captured
      >bring in naval troops
      On what? row boats and river barges? The Germans had no dedicated landing vehicles or craft and the best thing the command can come up is using Rhine river barges to across the Channel because surely using river barges is a good idea in a the much more rough and active English Channel
      Not only that but the British had countless small naval vessels that can be put to harassing and attacking any barge or boat that tries to cross even if we completely disregard the Royal Navy
      >use the Luffwaffe to keep the Royal Navy out of the Channel
      Oh yes, the Luffwaffe that had no dedicated naval aircraft and wings, no training or doctrine regarding bombing naval vessels and so far a poor tract record regarding attacking enemy ships is going to be able to keep the Royal Navy out of the Channel.
      I could go on but honestly I think that's enough

    • @maliceharding4668

      You clearly no nothing about this
      > the Germans have a large paratroop core by this time paratroops played a key role in the blitzkrieg they where used with great success during the invasion of the low country and Poland.
      > the home guard was mostly boys and old men pretty much the volkssturm but worse they didn't even have enough weapons or gear for them all.
      >the Germans had a lot of small naval craft what they lacked was battleships they pretty much had everything else even then they could use cargo subs to bring troops in to the port yes the Germans had cargo subs
      >do you forget what sank the Yamato aircraft strafing it most of the carrier planes that attacked it where fighters.
      > the Germans had a lot of bombers and torpedo craft that they used to drive the royal nave from Norway so yes it is proven that the Luftwaffe can push the royal navy back
      >the Germans were moments away from wining the battle of Britain several times they where destroying British airfields and aircraft fast than they could be produced.
      key point the Germans had a massive war machine behind them if the wanted to take the island they could have

    • @sosdamn6278

      The total number of paratroopers of the Luftwaffe was around 14.000 men however during the invasion of crete they increased the number to 28.000 troops(they used mountain troops) but they paradroped about 22.000 with the help of Italians.And even if they are paradroped on British soild and they capture 1 single harbour.Itll be rendered inoperable by the defenders so that they cant use it as a landing point.
      Yes the home guard had less training and was worse equiped than the germans however you need to keep in mind that the germans were doing an landing operationg would be a big disavantage for germans.To get what im talking it took allies years and years of preparation ships and planning for D-day and still they were afraid it will fail.The german didnt even had adequate landing ships for an land invasion and their armies had little experience with land invasion so when they arive on UK shore they'll have a hard time.
      The small naval craft is practicaly useless for an land invasion.For the suport of auxiliary and transport ships you need Destroys,Cruisers and Battleships for protection of it.Uboats are good at attacking transport ships not defending it.And how are cargo subs usefull?They transport capacity is limited as it can take so few soldiers on it and lets not talk about suplies...
      Its useless to compare Yamamoto to Bristish ships because the aircraft used to sink it were aircraft planes.These planes were made to fight agaisnt ships not unlike Me 109, He111 and Ju 87 that weren't made to engaje ships and the torpedo boats were too few in numbers and itll have a hard time against Royal Navy.And lets talk about the huge size of the Royal Navy which could take losses except the germans which needed every ship they had.They can damage the royal navy?Yes.They can push it back?No.

    • @maliceharding4668
      @maliceharding4668 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @sosdamn6278
      @sosdamn6278 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dunkirk is a bad example as most ships were civilain or merchant ships and Royal Navy deployed only 1 cruiser,36 destroyers and some gunboats and corvettes no other big ship was used because of shallow waters and there were over 600 civilian ships.Of this number the cruiser was damaged(not sure if it was because of a luftwaffe attack or that it colided with another ship.) and 6 destroyers sunk so using Dunkirk is not a good example.

    • @johanlassen6448
      @johanlassen6448 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason the Luftwaffe kept changing tactics is because the previous tactics did not work. They were losing, and were therefore trying new things.
      Also, even if they somehow magically had been able to attain air superiority against the UK (which they didnt), that still would not make an invasion feasible. First of all, there was the Royal Navy to contend with - the Luftwaffe lacked serious anti-ship capabilities, so that would be a problem. Furthermore, Germany lacked proper amphibious capabilities (no dedicated landing craft, no portable harbors, no proper supply vessels) in order to conduct and sustain an amphibious operation. Finally, they had very limited and lightly armed paratroopers, that would not on their own be able to take the UK.
      So basically: no, Operation Sea Lion could never become a reality.

    • @johanlassen6448
      @johanlassen6448 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, historians don't agree. No British airfield was knocked out for longer than a few hours, and even if the Germans had managed to knock out a British airfield all that would have meant is tha the British could withdraw their airforce further inland. The only one pulling things out of his ass is you.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain#Assault_on_RAF:_radar_and_airfields

    it would be complicated to forsee what happened. Personally the only way I could see it working is what you mentioned, a war of attrition and continuing the battle of Britain by air to the point where they would have won due to the fact that they had the numbers, the factories, and the constant flow of materials. Then with the costly victory the air battle would bring, a large strategic bombing campaign of its factories and other military targets. At this point they would also have to beat the British Navy somehow likely with the very same now veteran luftwaffe using torpedoes or even using Stukas to dive bomb their ships which could possibly pave the way for a sea invasion but it wouldnt be a sound plan with the numerous royal navy laying about. It would either have to be attritional surrender or Fallschrimjager invasion which can work if they built up the necessary air logistics and planned it correctly.

    "we shall fight on the beaches,
    we shall fight on the landing grounds,
    we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
    we shall never surrender,"
    Winston Churchill, June 4th, 1940

    I never understood randomly placing wire and obstacles around in games, doesn't make much of a choke point. Why not cover the ENTIRE beach in wire?

    This map could be easily located anywhere between Boscombe and Milford on the Southern English Coast. Nobody in the right mind would attempt a landing under the white cliffs.

    Well actually if you think about it our airforce was the reason why they weren’t able to successfully act on operation seal because of our airforce the one component that was the reason why the Germans turned their eyes on the eastern front

    Even if the invasion would be after 1945, the Pz. II’s and III’s make sense. They are light enough to put on a lading craft . I don’t think a 70 Ton Königstiger or Panther could make it to shore
