    The Canadians were in Italy and helped the Americans push to Rome and then north to the border. German soldiers said the Canadians were one of the toughest to fight in Italy like the Americans as well.

    Canadians played major role in Italy. Ever heard of Ortona? The battle that took place in that town was nicknamed "Little Stalingrad", on account of the street to street, house to house urban combat between us Canadians and the German paratroopers.

    Love the video, glad to see Canadian forces too, lol. And in saying that I'm Canadian and I've had two relatives I know of during WWII, they participated in the Normandy Invasion. My great grandfather who was a Sergeant, and my great uncle (don't know his rank), both joining the beaches of Omaha. Sadly the war affected my uncle greatly and had to kind of be put in the padded room. (Not really, but he did have to go to an institution.) My great grandfather was shot in the leg during the landings and went home. He has never spoken about the war.

    Diplex, not only were the Canadians present in Italy, there were even many brutal fortress battles similar to the one in your video. At places like the Gustav Line and Monte Casino it took literally months of horrendous fightings for the Commonwealth forces to finally breakthrough.

    • @campsall71
      @campsall71 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the canadians were the ones who broke through what the americans couldn't Gustav line is a god example, and many people don't know the devels brigade was also mostly Canadian forces :)

    the raid on Dieppe was the brainchild of field marshal Bernard Montgomery. He was also aware of the tenacity and heightened courage of the average Canadian soldier. The raid's main objective was to capture an enigma machine reported to be within the confines of the shoreline defenses. This was espionage information and highly classified. The Germans however had unexpectedly moved it to a local hotel that I'm assuming the general staff were using as headquarters.
    There is no movie based on the event however it did give the Allies a sense of preparation for D-Day. Canada declared war on Germany in 1939 just like GB & France. So by 1942 they had an entire mobilized, trained and freshly equipped army just sitting in England picking their bums. (The Americans had already intervened in the North Africa campaign)

    • @MrSeekerOfPeace
      @MrSeekerOfPeace 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Montgomery was actually recommended to use British commandos for the raid, and there were still a great deal of them involved. (perhaps why the intelligence was so poor) But he noticed the brave fighting of the British Commonwealth countries such as the ANZAC forces in North Africa as well as French Tunis/Algerian divisions in Italy. He probably felt Canada needed to "prove her worth" and I'm sure convinced Churchill to agree.

    • @MrReded69
      @MrReded69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a Canadian TV min-series called Dieppe. It does an incredible job with a limited budget. It also shows that while Monty planned a small version of the raid. After watching Mountbatten make it into an over ambitious disaster in the making, he pulled out of it and disassociated himself from it after it was cancelled for the first time. He advised everybody else to do the same.
      There was a secret mission carried out by a special squad during the actual raid. They were centered around a technician who was tasked with studying an advanced German radar site's equipment. The importance of the mission was indicated by the standing orders of the majority of the squad(all snipers):KILL THE TECHNICIAN IF HE IS IN DANGER OF BEING CAPTURED. He was that valuable.

    • @campsall71
      @campsall71 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im not sure where in the intro he mentioned Dieppe, but very true, we fought hard at basically what was a trial for D-Day, and as you mentioned the just as crucial enigma disks

    FYI there were Canadians in North Africa. My grandfather fought the Afrikorps in Libya and Egypt before he was redeployed to Italy as part of the RCAC. He was an "assistant driver"/multi-lingual interpreter on a Firefly. He was made an interpreter because he spoke Latin, French, German and Italian.

    Please look into Canadian WW2 engagements. Dieppe was a test of the Atlantik Walls defenses, Juno beach was smack dab in the middle of the beaches. Canadian divisions assisted in the sealing of the Falaise gap. Canadians were some of the first allies to fight the Japanese. Canada played an enormous part in Italy and developed interesting mouseholing urban combat techniques. Canada engaged positions all along the heavily fortified french coast to clear it of german resistance. Canada Liberated the Netherlands largely on our own whilst operation market garden was being planned and carried out. The Canadian/American Commando unit the "Devils Brigade" were integral in the defeat of the axis in Italy. The attack at Carpiquet Airport by the RCR was one hell of an engagement. Oh and the Canadian forces that hit Juno eventually came into contact with the 12th SS. Canada played a Big part in WW2 and you'd be interested in our exploits.

    I can agree with you that this fort might be in the western front because it is the brittish who are assaulting but if you look closely at 1:03 you can se that there is airplane that has been shotdown. That airplane belongs to the soviet unions airforce because it has the classical red stars on its wings. So that migth mean that either the soviets have assaulted that anti-air base which might mean it is somewhere in the middle of germany where both brittish,american and red army soldiers fought against german forces. But Idk maybe just placed the wrong type of crashed plane.

    Hey Diplex, great video and commentary. First time viewer. But the Dieppe raid was supposed to be an exercise in seeing if they wanted to see if they attacked ports instead of beaches. cause you need to land the tanks and supporting equipments, so it was at first thought that to take back Europe, the landings would need to be done on coastal cities and docks, where the docks would be captured mostly intact and then the ships would be able to come in and dis embark more troops.
    Kinda like what the germans did in Norway and got away with.

    Things sadly get rough eventually in life and the best thing to do is to crawl out of it either by talking to someone or taking a comfortable way on how to deal with it. The thing is some people keep it hidden and it does so much more to them. I hope you get better I love these videos and I watch every one because I find them random and been thought through on the map but random combat (things change) also i'd like to make a request. Could you do something with Romania? I seen the Romanian armor symbol on a panther on a battle you did. Thank you and keep up the amazing videos!

    Sorry, as a Canadian I must point out that we were indeed in North Africa, and with Monty through Italy as well as being the force that liberated much of the Netherlands. In the Pacific we took a major part in the defense of Hong Kong. It was in fact a young RCAF pilot from Vancouver who managed to land the bouncing bomb on the bridge over the river Kwai. Just to let you know.

    Diplex you should do more battles with Canadian troops, in any modern war. HEAVY contributions in both world wars (The First Newfoundland Regiment being the only regiment in the first world war to have been given the "Royal" title from the king of Britian), hefty peacekeeping operations, large anti terrorism operations in the middle East ect. ect. it would be a nice change of pace to see a different army than usual.

    Diplex, when you mention the raid on Ypres, do you mean in WW1? And in WW1 the canadians were some of the most tenacious fighters on the western front. Except they died in massive amounts charging the German trenches.
    Edit: Also, I believe it is pronounced "Eeep" instead of "Yep". Also, never mind. Watched another 2 minutes and saw you meant in WW2

    Are there any Shemans with 105 howitzers (in the turret, not as artillery) in the mods you have? I know they existed and that the US loaned some to Canadian units in Belgium. If you make another attack the extra firepower may be enough to break the Germans back. I guess that would be hard to balance out though.
    P.S. always love the fortress videos!

    this would have to be on the western front in Belgium or the Netherlands as the only ally on the eastern front was Russia and Canada and the UK operated north of the American forces that pushed from France. as for Italy I'm not sure if anyone pushed out from there. I think it was liberated then held there positions. and just a quick info for you Canada fought in all theaters (excluding the Eastern Front) of war in World War two including the Pacific against the Japanese before the Americans officially declared war a few years later.
