    I think you guys are being really misleading when you say that you had to pull that cam out and that it wouldn't work with that ECU... that's just not true. What it boils down to is the ECU wouldn't know what cam it is because you guys probably didn't know what it is and that's why you swap it out for something more efficient to match the rest of the setup and that makes sense. Whomever is coming up with what you guys say on the show needs to realize that car guys watch this stuff.

    With how much all that costs, would it not be more cost effective to purchase a used LS engine? I know it’s ‘boring’ but watching this seeing all the stuff you need to buy I can’t help thinking it.

    • @Gothamauto
      @Gothamauto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is just a thinly disguised ad for Edelbrock and RP, and if you add up all the costs involved, you'll see it is a lot of money. An iron LS from the boneyard with a turbo setup would blitz this thing. To be fair, they said they were after reliability, and I would hope the aftermarket EFI would provide that. While the EFI was said to support up to 550 horsepower, they decided to detune the 350 with a milder cam. So, cruiser.

    I tried EZ EFI on my cleveland. I was not impressed at all. It could not learn the accelerator pump shot worth a shit. Even after a few weeks driving it as a daily driver. It always had a lean spot off idle. (just like the damn Holley I replaced) I bought the EFI because I had such a hard time tuning out the lean spot on a Holley....as many people have the same problem and no clear answer for it. The EFI just didn't have the punch a Holley has. So I shelved the damn thing. Put the Holley back on. AFter 2 more years I FINALLY got the Holley tuned and no lean stumbles or flat spots. Just raging power right from the first throttle tip in. These (self learning) EFI systems are garbage. If you get a EFI system.... plan on having it professionally tuned or just be happy with less punch. The only benefit I got was the ECU maintaining idle. And with cold starts.

    • @starbattles1
      @starbattles1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Aeternalis Armentarius Actually I have the FiTech unit. EZ EFI is just what sticks in my head.
      1200hp boost capable unit.
      If you like the FI Tech unit I'll trade you it for a Holley system. It has less then 1k miles on it. The new holley systems cost the same as this did.

    I wonder if variable duration lifters would have helped--they calm the cam down until around 3,000 RPM, which may be when most EFI goes into WOT mode? Certainly, the mild cam should have been offset with at least Vortec heads. Bigger ports don't create a vacuum issue like tons'o overlap--unless you screw up a gasket :) What I do know--don't use a gear drive in place of a timing chain. The vibrations can set off a knock sensor screwed into the block.

    That is a very mild cam, I wish we knew some info on the original. I run a more aggressive cam and carb and having to swap out cam (potentially) would be a deal breaker for me, personally.Static Compression, stall, gear eetc...none of that is going to change with a convert to EFI but the DCR most certainly will with that new cam

    Great example of why powernation was a big fall for me. Why put in the middle a car show that had 0 to do with the build? 2ndly, why not do a dyno after the build? There were so many instances of a build being started then either never getting completed or were but multiple episodes later. They were never really focused either. Engine power doing front end builds, Detroit muscle doing engine builds. The only one that seemed to have a focus was the off road show, but they got rid of that guy. Oh well.

      @@TwentytenS4B8 good point, likely because they had to do the car show. I really liked the guys on all the shows, but, the producers never understood their viewers like you who likes to see a real build or like me who wanted to learn. Like I noted, the only show that had their act together was the off road show, that guy was phenomenal.

      EFI is way more reliable I got almost 400 000km on my 5.7 vortec Silverado and I'm just now getting to the point we're I want upgrade the injectors as I got one getting bad. I used to own a piece of shit carbureted Chevy Silverado 5.7 and that fuckin carb was always giving me problems was always needing rides to work cause it wouldn't start. Don't remind me of if you had to go somewhere and it didn't get to warm up for 20 min in the winter time first the bitch would usually stall halfway out of the drive way or the first stop sing and block traffic and dam near flood the bitch trying to get it going again. And o how I don't miss that pos 5.7 carbureted Silverado in the winter even plugged in it was always a stubborn piece of shit I sold that 85 Silverado 4x4 tie rod and eat piece of shit manual hub solid front axle pile of shit and jumped into a 98 Z71loaded Silverado with the fuel injected 5.7 vortec and push button 4x4 I love it ten times the truck that 85 Silverado carbureted pos was and no more frozen fuckin hubs to try and turn either hell when it's -55C I make my morning coffee grab my key fob push a button and the prick starts no more having to go out and put my coffee down and fight with a shit carbureted truck and baby sit it for 15 min in the cold. Best thing I ever did was give up on carburetors and move into fuel injection never will I ever go back too a stupid carburetor ever again in my life.I did look at doing a EFI swap and a 4l80e and a locking rear end and bunch of other stuff then I seen a clean 98 Z71 loaded with way more options for a great price and thought hell I'll spend thousands apong thousands on this 85 Silverado and it'll still never be the truck that 98 Z71 is and the 98 is ready to just hop in and go so bought the 98 and sold the 85 and couldn't be happier.

      @Dave Micolichek - compare the cost of labor to strip things down, remove old cam, fit new cam, put everything back together, plus cost of cam,... versus by a better EFI ECU.

      In the first few years of people doing EFI conversations, swapping the cam for something with less valve overlap was required because the computers just weren't as good as they are now. Now you can tune an ECM to run just about anything you want. Fuel injection and ECM tuning are infinitely better than they were in the 90s when modding computer controlled engines really started taking off.
