It IS a Chimney! And a heater! Its similar to a Finnish Fireplace. The fire in the lower level sends its smoke up the Chimney and as it rises it twists and turns passing thru your rooms 'Chimney' and heats the room thru convection! It produces a nice, non-drying, gentle heat.

The chimney things are old fashioned heaters. It's called a Kachelofen. A fire was lit in the base which heated up the ceramic tiles, and they radiated heat throughout the room. Probably more effective than an open fire in such big rooms. People used to collect cherry stones and sew them into fabric bags then heat them up in the oven. They could then be held for warmth, similar to a wheat bag or hot water bottle.

Tim and Gaby, not to visit for these reviews, but you may enjoy the late John Foreman's series Big Old Houses: old mansions and townhouses, many now functioning as private schools and clubs, libraries, other appropriate uses. He insisted on entering by the front door, but most enjoyed the basements, back stairs, kitchens, plumbing. Where the workings and workers had been. History, architecture, conservation for now and future, check, check and check🤗

The odd looking chair is an antique sleigh chair, also known as a sledge chair or pulled sedan chair. These were historically used in colder European regions (makes sense why there's one here) especially by nobility, to travel over snow-covered roads in style and comfort.
The runners at the base allowed the chair to be placed on a sleigh or pushed over smooth surfaces.

I do think this is the BEST and most amazing place you’ve ever showed us. You have been to some cool places but this one is breathtaking.
Also it made me a little sad as well. As part of the Austro-Hungarian empire we had very similar castles in Hungary. After WWII the owners were violently sent away (to make sure they don’t have the power to go against the new regime), their belongings stolen or destroyed and the buildings used as a hospital, school or orphanage.
Now those castles are being restored as much as possible but this one really shows how amazing all those castles were back in their days.
I love the strange sound of the wooden floor when you walk on it.
Yes that thing was used for heating purposes

It seems you went from the past to the present. I loved this one & smiled all the way through it. I would stay there for maybe three nights especially with my sisters & daughter. Not knowing how much we could get around but it’s very lovely, full of history. I would take a thousand pictures & hope to see a ghost wondering around. This one is my favorite so far.💕

The public rooms are spectacular. The private rooms, however, leave something to be desired, as Tim’s room looked cold and unappealing.
There was no cohesive decor scheme - and things that could easily (and inexpensively) have been improved (such as replacing the outdated & non-historic drawer linings and touching up the chipped desk) have been ignored.
The Sound of Music paraphernalia - movie posters, albums and the like - should be corralled into one place, not scattered throughout the hotel. Those cheap Hollywood promotional items behind plexiglass severely detract from the building’s historic ambiance.
I’d call this place a missed opportunity for the proprietors: If they spiffed up the suites, they could have a 4 star establishment here and increase revenue - and be able to afford to complete some much-needed repairs. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The large creepy item in the corner of the room is a brick built wood burning stove covered in majolica tiles. It is missing the metal chimney tube that would have come out of the top. They act like giant storage heaters and would have been just what you needed to heat such a large room. They are still used in mainland Europe. Modern ones, metal, not brick, are powered by compressed wood particle pellets and are popular where there is no gas supply or where gas is very expensive. I have a pellet burning stove (stufa a pellet) here in rural Tuscany. It heats my radiators and is the best heating system I have ever used.

This is definitely the creepiest place you've reviewed in my opinion. The creaky floors, the music you hear at random, those giant urn-like things in the corners, the eerie quiet. I'd be way too scared to go exploring it alone, especially at night lol. Apparently those creepy urn things are tiled stoves.

They are heaters Tim, those "safe" doors in the stairwell are where you put the fuel in. They have heat bricks in them like a storage heater. Most Austrian houses have them, so you don't get the soot, smoke or sparks in the room.

We didn't stay at the Villa Trapp but were privileged to receive a tour by the gentlemen who was at that time running it as a B&B. The best parts were seeing the staircase that came down to the foyer with a large photo of the real Von Trapp children and seeing the captain's actual whistle and WWI medals (even though he was fighting against the Allies as a submarine commander.)

Those things in the corners are like the equivalent of what a boiler is now, they heat hot water and that would have heated the room. Also, if it’s anything like Hofburg Palace in Vienna (which it looks a lot like), then the hidden doors are likely for the servants, there’s likely corridors behind them that the servants would have used to quietly move between rooms and carry out their duties without disturbing the family who lived there.

We booked to stay here last October for my birthday, as I’m a huge sound of music fan, and ended up walking out and going elsewhere. I think you’re being kind saying “it’s a little run down” we felt it was a lot run down. Our suite sold as having lake views, was on the ground floor, where we had to walk past old storage rooms and corridors lined with huge towel racks and cleaning products, had huge bars on the window so you couldn’t see the lake. It was cold and there was no heating on so everything felt damp. Everything in the room felt worn and old, not historic, just old and the whole place felt like they were not investing, nor had they invested, anything in a very long time. We walked around and yes the public rooms are beautiful but it’s very run down and sad to see and definitely does not just he high prices charged. We did do the sound of music tour, which was excellent and would Ivey recommend, and enjoyed Salzburg but the Schloss was a HUGE disappointment.

I know somebody who went to Salzburg on a tour and the town was heaving with tours, people dressed up as nuns, in traditional clothes so probably better in the offseason. Apparently the true story of the von trapps isn't quite like the film which upset some of the locals, they married in the 20s rather than just before they left and they caught a train to Italy rather than escaping over the mountains.

Its the oldschool fancy heating. You still have them sometimes in Germany and up to Estonia. Because its such an oppulent house, the fire is fed from the other side of the wall, so the servants don't disturb the people sitting in the room.
