Hey, i had a similar situation last year, after feeding a dozen big trailers of willows to the local wildlife centre (giraffe food) i gave up and hired in a guy with a forestry mulcher and cleared an acre and a half of impenetrable willows.
I was pretty conflicted afterwards because it was suddenly just a big flat brown site rather than my field. But next spring it was an entire ecosystem again and i could keep on top of any new Sally willows. It's now a chest high wild flower and grass meadow full of bees and butterflies

Weirdly enough my daughter was a Willow Water baby I have a rare form of psoriasis its condition in pregnancy that basically kills you and your baby slowly I lived on willow water for two trimesters it has antiinflammatory properties and my mother swears it's part of the reason we survived so I basically owe my life any my daughter to Willows

I am fortunate to be higher & drier, so no willow. That said: it is the season to do battle with the invasive bkackberry species: Himalayan, Evergreen & Cut-leaf.
My new best friends are cowhide, to the elbow, gardening gloves.
    Wishing you well, my friend.

I planted willow to help with water too. It's amazing how fast it grows. But I can well imagine it's a nightmare when left unchecked. Glad you are making effort.
    How fab drone footage too.
    Take care all.
Oh and as I type. You're at 14k subs how amazing is that!

Thanks for that! As we hit winter now, there is slightly less willow than there was before we cut it 😅 But that is still progress, which means we will, eventually, get there 😀

Always delighted to see your videos Tara. When sporadic, they are a lovely surprise!!! :) Good luck with all the work and looking forward to the content. As you say the willow is probably holding on to a lot of water and I’d be very wearing to take out too much of it or the land could revert to bog and rushes very quickly. What do you want to use that area for that you want to clear some of it?

Have you contacted the lady at Beltaine Cottage? She is in Co Roscommon and uses permaculture to manage her property. She is also on TH-cam and would be the best source of info on what to do for your property to reduce flooding.

Willow. Holly. Brambles. And whatever that spikey-ass tree thing is with the huge thorns…plants from the mouth of HELL.
I’ve been waging war for YEARS trying to keep our little patch from being buried in its own vegetation.
I wade out into the field, armed with clippers, strimmer, bow-saw - and steely determination - year after year.
The best I can say is that I knock them down onto the canvas, count them out, raise my gloves in victory - and do the dance of joy on the bodies of my victims.
They leap back to life every Spring.
    Lather.
    Rinse.
    Repeat.

This is beautiful, oh so true there are places on this earth that ruined the natural ecosystem that supports the amphibious animals. It's amazing and great that Ireland 's citizens get it and do something about it.

Pigs. Borrow some pigs. Make sure to fence them well with a good pig fence. They'll dig up and eat roots and all of the saplings.

Hi Tara I've been following you on and off for a couple of months and just love your content. Can you tell me what part of Ireland you're in. If you're not too far down I could come down with one of the old tractors I've done up with either a mower or hedgetrimmer. I live in Co. Derry. I might be able to help with your willow problem, I'm not an expert in anyway. I have a couple of ideas on how to keep it under control. One of the things you could do is get a tractor and topper mower in once or twice a year and just leave the cuttings. This will help the soil and not kill off the wild flowers. You could also put a goat on it from time to time.
Please let me know what you think. I know this was posted 5 months ago but I'm only seeing it now, I know things could have changed by now.
I wish yous all the best as I just love to see people getting on well espeically young people.

      Hi Tara,
I love driving, last Saturday I went to Longford to visit FarmerPhil and bought some meat from them. It would be about a 2 hour drive to your part of our country without the trailer and about 3 hours with it carrying a tractor.
I was thinging of the spring before heading on any advenger. Sorry for any spelling mistakes I'm dyslecst.

Interesting episode. I like that you're acknowledging the water sucking qualities and coppicing notions. There's some fun basket and other craft options open there. If you've an open fireplace, careful, cos willow does be very spitty.
My poor partner was tasked with the miserable job of removing willows along a waterline on the property we live on, and used roundup (glyphosate) and another poison in conjunction with machinery (i think he had to spray the stumps to stop the regrowth.)
Which... Not really what I'd advocate myself, but was advocated by the dept of conservation. Does seem to do the job.
Could maaaaybe be done with chainsaws on your property (obv, do your health and safety homework first) seeing as you'll keep the firewood (all bloody wasted here 🙄).
Ugh,GTG,but still 3min of the video left

I thought I was being very clever when I rang a coffin-maker and asked him if he'd like it to weave his willow coffins. I was informed it's the wrong sort for weaving!

@@DiaryofaDitchWitch I wouldn´t use pesticides for the willow (It will contamin the soil and get into the groundwater. You can do a controlled burn of the stump.
