J: I visited this very airfield a few years ago, perhaps in 2016 or so. It was an eye-opening experience. The field was literally a Su-27 junkyard, with maybe (and I am not exaggerating) 10-12 working Su-27s. When I say "working," I do not mean FMC, (Fully Mission Capable,) but only barely flyable. The rest of the airfield was filled with 30-40 Su-27s in various states of disrepair, cannibalization, and mostly housing for rodents and insects. The sole aircraft on air defense alert was a joke, cords sticking out of the tires, and one of the missiles was actually missing a guidance fin. However, that jet WAS in a hardened shelter. I am confident the Su-27s hit today were either decoys or "static display" aircraft, stripped of all useful parts and purposefully left exposed as "bait." However, it's just my opinion...

I just don't understand why they haven't built bunkers for their planes like NATO bases have. It's not like they have great numbers of planes to protect!

Do we even know if these planes are serviceable. I remember at the very beginning of the russian invasion of an interview of airport groundcrew. They said they intentionally were putting unflyable aircraft on these open areas but always kept their good aircraft hidden away from the open airfields

1.) Planes not scrambled - unflyable?
2.) Been there for a long time - decoys or stripped hulks?
3.) No air defense - nothing valuable there to defend?
4.) Nothing changed between hits and recon drone not attacked - inactive airfield?

How’s that? Ukraine can’t hit Russian bases. I thought Russia wasn’t allowed either. That’s sarcasm by the way.

Thank you Jonathan, I have for a while thought about the idea of filling airbases with knackered old junk, if a country won't donate a working F16 how about a husk, park it up as a decoy 🤔, wouldn't look great for PR for Ukraine to start with, but when ruzzian high command gets footage of all the donated F16s destroyed, but most seem to still be flying missions, that could piss them off and lead to a bit of head scratching 🤣👍🇺🇦

Even more worrying is why were they all clustered so bloody close together ?
That is a big air base there is no reason why they could not have been stored as far away from each other as possible to limit the damage from any attack .

Both sides can be successful at hitting each others valuable resoures. Silly to imagine thick concrete bunkers can be built quickly and without being targets themselves.

Could these have been decoys? Why Did US Buy Old Soviet Aircraft from Kazakhstan?
In October Kazakhstan offered 117 old Soviet-era combat aircraft for sale by auction and it has now been reported that the US has bought 81 of them through offshore intermediaries.

There was a US congressional delegation there today and perhaps this could be another argument for allowing Ukraine to hit russian airfields. Back in April the US bought 80 or so old migs from Kazakhstan for 20,000 US each, many said to be unworkable. At the time everyone was speculating on spare parts, etc. I have to wonder what else those might be used for.... I'll bet Budanov knows.

As for the loitering drone, the Australian government has a lot to answer for
The morons in Canberra are always B-Sing about "support for Australian high tech manufacture "
Yet when EOS got orders for 400 slingers early tis year the less than useless Australian government should have been there with a big bucket of cash so EOS could set up a production line to build them is numbers ,1 per month will not cut it , while a new 1000/month factory could be built .
These slingers have a potential sales of over 5,000,000 as they have proven themselves to work very well against all types of current propeller driven drones in Ukraine.
However in time all cannon firing anti drone systems will be replaced with lazers so the window to cash in on the system is very short and the massive demand is urgently needed right now
At $ 1,000,000 a pop they are cheap enough to be installed on every cargo ship for instance and I am sure LLoyds would happily pay to have them fitted
As they are easily transported and can work on rolling vessels they could also be bolted to a container frame , dropped onto every ship traversing the red sea for example .
However as par normal the Australian government refuses to offer meaningful support to manufacturing industry and the 180 Slingers Ukraine just ordered ( yes they are paying for them ) will be built in Ukraine and probably the 5,000,000 the rest of the world will want to buy over the next 10 years as well .

Jonathan, as you know, focusing on the actual number of losses is not the point. Focusing on why so many aircraft are sitting in the open, unprotected, seems to be the question. They need to be much better prepared to receive the F16s.

If you need a smaller airfield think of aircraft carrers, a lunch device to accelerate the jet on the ground.
A canopy that channels the thrust of the jet, like open opposite sides and a bit smaller at the back end.
Sort of like a cowling on the exhaust end but for the whole jet.

Just keep in mind that these kinds of daytime attacks are not included in those massive barrage figures. So, that explains why we see smaller wave attacks despite all reputable sources reporting an increase in missile production numbers. The Russians are using these missiles more and more in the battlefield in daytime , not for strategic bombing campaigns. This and the fact that Russians no longer have access to the huge pre war stocks.

Given Ukrainian form for consistently surprising us (and the Russians) with their clever use of weapons systems etc,
And given the fact that the Ukr knew about the surveillance drones, I would highly doubt this is incompetence on Ukraines part.
More likely trying to find out how the Russians will respond when they spot F16.
Valuable information to know how long it takes the enemy to put fire on a target. Definitely worth an elaborate baiting tactic with decoys or whatever.
Thats my hope and I shall stick with it until proven otherwise 🤞

Quick look at Wikipedia shows it’s a former airbase and museum of aviation. Could have been recommissioned for the war, but why recommission that when you can invest in airfields further west and less vulnerable? Unless it’s part of a dispersal plan. The wiki article does say there are bunkers. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why are valuable Ukrainian SU27's jets left unprotected on their airfields so close to the frontline? Iskandr and Calibr missiles are very effective and so Ukraine will be degraded if airfields are not proteced by NASAMS or IRIS-T or Patriot systems.....

Have to ask Ukraine why they have not already been building at the very least earthwork revetments around their open air aircraft.
"It's not as bad as it appears ..." is a poor russian style attempt at spin control.
