- In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train drivers view on the Austrian Achensee Railway steam train between Jenbach - Achensee - Janbach in 4K/60 frames per second.
The Achensee Railway (German: Achenseebahn) is a 6.78 kilometres (4.21 mi) long metre gauge railway running between Jenbach and Seespitz on Lake Achen in Tyrol (Austria). Within its length it rises some 440 metres (1,444 ft) in height, with the steeper sections using the Riggenbach rack system. It is Europe's oldest cog railway which is still steam operated.
The 6.78 km route has a track gauge of 1,000 mm. It runs between Jenbach and Achensee Schiffstation. The Riggenbach rack system is installed between Jenbach and Eben, from which point the line descends gently to Achensee Schiffstation. Upwards trains propel to Eben, where the engine runs round and hauls the coaches to the Achensee terminal. The engine leads throughout on the downward journey. The official opening of the line was on 8 June 1889.

Oh Lord have mercy, how I remember this little railroad! My wife and I took a short stretch of it from the Achensee terminus point to just the next station and back, in July of 2015...and now she's gone, and I've had no luck with two subsequent tries: in July 2021 the tracks were being rebuilt, and in August 2022 I showed up on a Tuesday...their day off! I'll make it again someday, take a trip in her memory, just not Tuesday! Meanwhile, thank you with this surprise video! JAT

I seriously am very impress with no matter what they cog locks into the rack so smoothly at each ends of the rack section. I wonder how they get it to lock in if the cog teeth are off a little to the rack... has to be some kind of alignment device.

Great video and very interesting. The second part was an utter bore. The same view from behind the engine the whole way down could be deleted and video would lose nothing. IMHO.
