      I just started climbing maybe 30 days ago and I’ve improved my footwork and technique in general so much watching your videos but this one really gave me some insight, gonna go to the gym after work tomorrow and really focus on my footwork and not using my arms, thank you so much for your videos they’re awesome!

    I'm pretty good with my footwork. I do a fair amount of focused footwork during warm up, particularly with silent confident feet. Where I fail is having my weight on my feet. There are definitely times when I can't figure out how to orient my body in order to keep my weight off my arms and onto my feet. This is particularly a problem with overhangs and inclines.

      It does get harder with overhangs and inclines because you really have to crank in on your feet to get your weight on top of your foot/hold.
      What I've been doing and it helps with both control and balance is Pistol Squats.. you do this and you will learn to balance with one foot and get used to putting your center of gravity on top of your foot and be able to press down with your leg and control your way up and down. Hope this helps my friend.

    I'm amazed of how well you are able to show mistakes that early-mid level climbers do, but that at the same time, these aren't that basic. And to be honest I'm trying to find as much knowledge on the internet and your videos help me improve sooooo much, my starting positions similar to the one you started in this video are alot easier now.

    There are two topics I would have added to the discussion here. You did both things just didn't talk on the topics. Bringing your feet as close to under your hips, and cross body tension ( which foot to is use and why. As often as possible you want to have your opposite hand and foot supporting your weight as you reach for the next hold. Even if both feet are on you will mostly be weighting the foot on the opposite side of the body from whichever hand is supporting your weight.)
    Great video though. To be fair I haven't looked through your other content. Perhaps you have done videos on those subjects. I think they would have fit best into a foot work video. (Even though the hips over feet could be a hip movement video as well I always tend to think of it as footwork. )

      "Crossing up" is the technique of having a "line of support" running diagonally through your core; for instance, if you're about to reach with your right hand, your "line of support" should consist of your right foothold and your left (stationary) handhold. In this case, your RIGHT foot is your SUPPORT. The foot opposite your "reaching hand" is your DRIVER.
      Your SUPPORT almost always requires a foothold of some sort, while your driver does NOT - it simply needs to be in the right position, which is again diagonally opposite your target hand hold, on a line through your CORE, or center of gravity.
      A key point about placing your DRIVER is that it needs to be high enough to STAY ON THE WALL until your moving hand reaches its intended hold. If one doesn't place their DRIVER high enough, it will come off the wall before the hand hold is reached, leaving only one leg to do the work of moving your core.
      There are several other salient points to consider when using the support/driver concept for efficient climbing, including which "sweet spot" to use on which foot (which engages the large muscles of the core,) and how torso rotation contributes to maxim use of skeletal strength and minimal use of one's pulling muscles.
      I STRONGLY recommend practicing this style of movement CONSCIOUSLY on easy terrain to create the proper engrams needed to climb harder stuff correctly!
      Again, Oswaldo, a well thought-out and produced video. I'm really liking the side-by-side comparisons, and I spend a lot of time hitting the j-key to see specific things several times!

    Great tip. I've been focusing on silent feet so much that I don't think about putting power into the feet (enough). I'll definitely think of a ladder and be wary of pushing downwards more.

    I am 68 years old and just learning to rock climb. Your videos have been very useful, particularly for those of us who have lost a lot of our arm strength. I am guessing that the right shoes are critical to increasing the use of feet and legs. Do you have a video on shoes?

    Another gem! This was timely for me since I’m in the UK for a short visit and went to Harrowall. I kept falling off a climb until I had the duh-use-a-heel-hook-moment. Then it was simple to transfer weight and use the next handhold as a stabilizer to move the feet up. Thanks!

    Hopefully with enough practice i can climb like the right guy and not like the left! I ALWAYS end up muscling my way through climbs but this is something i am actively working on every session. Thanks for the ongoing tips dude.

      Ah yes, I used to mucle my way up when I first started climbing and I actually thought that was the way to go. With practice you will start noticing a HUGE difference when you start focusing more on your footwork and pressing down on your leg instead of always using your arms to pull down. you will get it tho! keep at it and thank you.

    Showing comparisons is really effective. Thanks for these amazing videos. Other things that the smooth you does is you shift your weight and turn your body/hips whereas the flailing you climbs facing the wall straight on at all times. Also, the smooth you starts with arms straight and relaxed rather than bent and tensed.

    Great video! Need to keep these tips in mind for my session tomorrow morning.
    I am also keen for some advice on footwork for overhangs/roof climbs. I am relying less on my arms now, but my footwork is definitely the missing link.
    I find it hard sometimes to know when I should be smearing/flagging as opposed to using any and all available footholds on overhangs especially with direction changes and being taller I tend to get bunched up very easily. I am noticing I am not getting exhausted anywhere near as fast as I was a couple of months ago but I get to a point where I am unsure of where to go or how I should be doing the next move so I tend to drop off out of frustration rather than a physical limitation.

    If you watch women climb, you can see great examples of footwork because they lack the same upper body strength as men and GENERALLY can't muscle through problems.

    Great video again, such great explanations and flow! One question for you... I have trouble with footwork on overhanging routes that don't have any place for a heel hook, mostly chips, etc. I do end up using my arms more. I would love to hear your thoughts or maybe a future video?

      Joshua Schleman footwork on an overhang is definitely hard to learn, but what I can say is that keeping your feet higher will help you stay on the wall, and training your core is the most important thing for overhang climbing

    Climbing is NOT like climbing a ladder. When climbing, you don`t step into your blended arms! Maybe, when it is flat but not when 90degrees or overhanging. In climbing you keep your arms stretched, while preparing with your feet, arm comes last. This boulder would be easier by bringing both feet up first (not always possible. )Climbing has 3 phases: 1. Preparation in a rest position on the long arm and decision, where the next hold is and looking for the steps, 2. Action Movement starts in your feet, arm last, 3. finding the next resting-position.

    Why not taking the the right step in the beginning and make the first move frontal? Too steep?
    But if turning to the right, your left arm could stay stretched if you bring you hip more to your left holding hand.

    Here’s another foot work tip - Soak your feet in hot laverdar bath salt. It’ll loosen your muscles and free up blood flow , which will reduce stiff ness and cramping!

    Rockentry videos seem to get positive feedback on the video quality, and I can see why. However, for me, I find the talking to be soooo annoyingly slow! I can't put my finger on it, but I think it's the spacing between each word! It's not that I can't understand him - but it's just at a rhythm that seems unnatural and I guess it (unreasonably) pisses me off! I haven't noticed anyone else comment on this. Am I alone in thinking this?

      It's not always positive feedback. It's just hard to please everyone and to be realistic, It's not possible. If it's not my voice it's the music, if not then how I speak or the editing. These videos are for people who find the content valuable and use it to improve themselves as climbers. That is my goal and purpose of this channel, share my failures and learnings.
      Although I don't see your comment as a bad one but as a constructive criticism, I appreciate it. I'll see what I can do in the future videos to improve the voice over. But, If it really bothers you that much I really wouldn't recommend this content, it's not intended to annoy anyone but help. Thank you.

      @@rockentry Hi! Yes, my comment came from pure curiosity. I wanted to know if anyone shared the same feeling. Cause time and time again I come back to your videos, and it's the thing I notice! It's such a random comment that's not helpful for the climbing. I think I'm just bored, and over-noticing an aspect! Thank YOU!

    I think that a lot of beginner climbers discount the importance of good shoes and opt for the cheapest shoe they can find (I know I did). I think that you want a shoe that will help to instill confidence by not slipping off of holds (yes some shoes slip off of the holds easily). I can’t count the number of times that I was told to “trust my feet” and I genuinely wanted to but every time I’d step onto a smallish hold my feet would slip right off and whelp, there went the trust I wanted to have in my feet. I’d recommend starting with an intermediate level shoe that’s geared toward edging (for those of you who want to take up climbing seriously).
