  • In today's video, I'm going to show you how to install a transmission cooler and why you need one. I'm putting it on my 4runner, but this can be done on various off-road vehicles like Jeeps and Broncos as well. The products that you'll need are listed below and are not sponsored, feel free to buy whatever brand or store you prefer. I tested before and after using my ScanGauge 3.

Strange your trans temps are getting that hot. I have a 2020 TRD ORP with full armor, F/R bumpers, winch, roof rack, 33s, etc I tow a 3k trailer as well and live on the west coast so our mountain passes are much much higher than where you are at. Some longer passes in really hot weather itll get up to 220 (Torq Converter and Trans Pan) but never to 250 and thats with 90-100 degree ambient temps.

@dubprocesslbc I am glad it isn't burning up on you. That us one less problem to deal with. I'm running out in Colorado right now and I'm glad I have it pulling a camper and running the passes.

From what I’ve read, 1 should be pan temp and 2 should be converter.
2 fluctuates a lot but you should be more concerned with 1

Thank you for that feedback. I was thinking that but had no way of confirming.

About to install one myself on my new 4Runner, but may wait a bit, as I want to install it when I change over the aftermarket bumper and install the winch and new fog lights, it's gonna be a big project. But I suppose they make a big difference I had a good one (factory) on my F-150 with the 8200GVWR package and towing through the mountains, it was great, heat of the summer chugging up the steeper hills and it never was out of the 195-206 degree range the whole time, so trans coolers are a great investment and it had nearly 200K miles too.

What brand and model is that gauge you are using to monitor your tranny temp? Also does it connect to the ODM port on the 4Runner?

It is the Scan Gauge 3. It does plug into the OBD 2 port
