    In this video we install an Iconic Fabrication 1996-2002 4runner Transmission Cooler Bracket Kit. These CNC press-broke .125" thick 5052 aluminum brackets are designed to make transmission cooler installs a breeze for all automatic transmission 3rd gen 4runners! (Does NOT work for first gen Tacoma.)
    These fit the Hayden 678 and Hayden 698 coolers. The Hayden coolers are identical in size but the 698 is equipped with an internal temperature bypass which helps the fluid get up to operating temperature faster, recommended for colder climates. Reduce wear on the transmission by keeping temperatures cooler! You will have to remove or relocate one of the horns.

    Just installed this on my rig as well, installation turned out super clean and was really happy with fitment. Not sure about others but I didn’t have to adjust any of the holes. Even the routing of the hoses turned out really nicely. Wish this had been out a long time ago lol.

    Helpful video!! I followed this closely and everything turned out great and my trans temps have dropped significantly. However I ran into the issue where coolant is slowly seaping through the nut and washer that was loosened to adjust the nipple on the radiator. Ive tried tightening it but I don’t want to do it too tight considering the radiator is plastic. Please advise if i did something incorrect here.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Something must have gotten compromised on the fitting. I would drain your coolant into a clean bucket so you can re-use it, remove the nipple, and reinstall it with some extra insurance…loctite could do the job if it’s leaking from the threads. But first!, make sure you have the hose clamp tight enough or confirm it’s truly leaking from the connection vs the hose.

    How's the cooling of this cooler vs your old cooler? I have the same old one but am looking for something with a little more cooling capacity.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really a huge difference in cooling although I haven’t taken any crazy long trips while extreme temperatures… but I will say I like that it floats in front away from the radiator which gives it more room to breathe which is a good feature. It is a bigger cooler, and I like the way it’s mounted better. So all in all, I would go this route over any other option on the market.

    Won’t putting it infront of the main radiator make it more difficult for the main radiator to operate as good? Since it’s blocking most of the main radiator. Just wondering and really wanna do this mod myself in my 4Runner :)

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At some level, the trans cooler does inhibit air flow through the AC condenser and radiator. Air will first pass through the trans cooler and then to the AC condenser and radiator, but some air is blocked. There's no getting around it. You lose a little bit of cooling efficiency for your AC condenser and radiator, but you gain better cooling for your transmission. It's a worthwhile trade-off.

    Nice, i gotta get this 678 cooler. How do I know if i need a new radiator? Ive had my 4runner for 6 year's and only put 30k miles on it. I dont know how old that radiator is. I dont see rust where the hoses clamp. Socal truck all its life.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the top plastic is discolored or turning brown that is probably one way to suspect it’s older.. why take the chance though? A radiator is about $150 plus coolant plus some distilled water. Flush your system, get a new radiator in there and have the piece of mind knowing you won’t have to worry the radiator failing internally and ruining your transmission which would be a bigger headache in itself.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@damacknificent151 You don't get all the coolant out via the petcock valve. Some coolant will leak out when you disconnect the lower radiator hose. At least that's what I think you're asking.

      @rthomas2157 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, but in a world where it is becoming more and more overly saturated with these off-road mods. I am one that likes to take a look at products for their functionality and necessity. For what I would imagine the cost of one of these are you could achieve the same thing with the provided brackets and hardware that you get when you purchase a Hayden transmission cooler already. You may have to drill another hole, make some bends, or buy a longer bracket at your local hardware store, but in the end you’re still gonna come out saving some money. But that’s why I say to each their own if this serves a purpose for you and makes it easier than by all means it’s your truck do with it what you will.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @rthomas2157 I installed a Hayden 699 cooler on my 98 4runner. The kit only came with the zip ties, and I didn't want to mount it in that fashion. I paid additional money to get the generic metal strap kit. For the time I took figuring out the bends I needed to make in each strap to mount it and the price I paid for the mounting kit, I would have gladly paid the money for this bracket to simplify the installation. It depends on what your time is worth and how you want to spend it. If you want to make runs to the hardware store and figure out how to mount it, that's totally fine, but I guarantee there's a huge market for a product like this because it makes the cooler install much easier. Like you said, to each his own. Sean and I like this product, and that's why we are supporting it. Happy Wrenching and Sic Mods for All! - Timmy

    I’ve never really cared how long (time wise) a modification or project takes, just do it to the best of your ability.
    Talk about ability, if you realize years later you could have done it better just redo it.
    It’s your pride on the line.
    And if you don’t take pride in your work, STOP.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, some people don't have endless time. They prefer the one and done scenario and there's a lot to be said about getting it right the first time. If you have endless free time, then sure, you can fiddle around multiple times with whatever you want. I believe in a job well done, but I don't view it so much through a "Pride" lens. To me, pride means you're worried about what others think of your work. Unless you're in the business of selling your work, pride can be a serious waste of time. The question should be, does the modification work? If the answer is yes, then why reinvent the wheel. For instance, I installed a Hayden cooler on my 98 4runner with some generic metal straps. It would be a much cleaner install if I bought the Iconic Fab bracket, and redid the install, but I view that as a waste of time and money. They way I installed mine works, and that's the way I'll keep it, unless my cooler fails and I have to replace it. If I do have to replace the cooler at some point in the future, then I'd buy the Iconic Fab bracket to get a much cleaner install. - Timmy
