    A good friend/mentor of mine always told me: "If you hang out with 9 broke people, you'll be the 10th."

    Kicked all my friends out of my life and went from a $30,000 job that I hated to a $105,000 job that I love. This stuff works, people.

    Almost everyone in my environment tells me to go into debt to buy a car. Many people in my environment actually have car debt. I'm the one without a car because I want to save for a good one and first get a "Dave car" to get to my work place.
    I am the opposite of the people around me - I read at least two books per month (non fiction), I don't have overdraft, I don't own a credit card and I have a budget. I even budget my Starbucks Visits! I put 20€ per month on my Starbucks Card and only buy coffee with this card. If there's no money left on the card, I don't get coffee there. It's just a special treat or me since I don't go out for drinks or go on vacation.

    This is true. But if you can't afford to hang out with rich people in the first place, then you're a bit stuck. I started life with a group of wealthy friends with rich parents. I got into a very good school on no fees, so I was surrounded by people like that all day. But I could never afford to go to the same places, as my parents don't believe in sharing money. They all had driving lessons paid for at the same time, had help with university, etc, so they didn't need to work as many hours (if any). So eventually we stopped hanging out as they got tired of me working so much and always being too broke/tired. I've never managed to catch up, so now I don't really hang out with anyone as I still work long hours and don't have much money, but I'm not interested in most of the hobbies/activities that the poorer people I know have (TV, fastfood, celebrities, going out drinking, casinos, etc). It's a catch 22 for a lot of people.

    This is a really great video! I would, however, be careful in making blanket statements like this in finance terms. Many (not all) financially successful people are terribly greedy humans. All these people can ever think about is gaining more and more and more and building for themselves a kingdom right here on earth. I am not talking about people who like to pretend to be rich via debt, but actual rich people who have no debt and millions of dollars in assets. Culturally in America, these two things can blend together unfortunately. I would say, in terms of personal finance that just because someone has “made it” (no debt, retirement, financial freedom) doesn’t mean that their character is upright or that their intentions are good. You can die a millionaire, hated and alone if your heart isn’t in the right place.

    • @tkordik
      @tkordik 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would not call "(not all) financially unsuccessful people" terribly greedy. It's more that they can be misguided and have a victim syndrome. Blaming the rich for your problems in America when you can be rich if you really want to is not a solution. I take issue when the term "successful" is thrown around like it is only in reference to material possession and net worth. It is possible to be "successful" and not be rich.

      I've noticed most truly wealthy people view it like a game where £ or $ is their XP. They don't neccessarily need any more money to buy stuff after a certain level, but having more XP than their friends means they are beating them in the game.

    What's wrong with me? I do close to twice as good (at least financially) as best of my close friends. Weird...
    I choose my books through what people recommend on the internet. I listen to you, Dave, too. Should i consider you as one of my closest friends? The equation would make sense then.

    1 Corinthians 15:32-34
    [32] What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” [33] Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” [34] Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame. (ESV)

    Technology sounds exciting and even mysterious to witness a self-driving vehicle minus the driver. A Self-driving car appears to be scary. If I am able to get in before the crowd, my chances of retirement would be phenomenal and a Self-driving achievement for retirement.

    Hang around with Successful People: I wonder what the dirt poor people thought back in 18th century before French revolution.
    "Oh yeah I have to hang out with Aristrocrates, maybe when I will become one!"
    Don't think too much has changed since then.
