I've gone through hard times and illness and they've made it much easier to get through. Theres been much improvement and growth in the time I've seen and I'm just happy they are still around. SPOOKY SUPERNATURAL FACTS:
Vampires are one of the most constantly rebalanced supernatural creatures. They started out too OP and are now nerfed to shit.
They also have no reflection in the mirror because one of the earliest vampires was so narcissistic that God decided "Naw no masturbating to your own image." and released a patch that all vampires will not be able to see their own reflections.
I still prefer pre-v6.6.07 vampires. Now they're just sparkling in the sunlight.
...and the Ravnos were retcon'd because they were deemed "too racist"
The no reflection thing i believe only applies to mirrors backed with silver, such as antiques. Might be a glitch in the patch, though.

As a person that was diagnosed with Grand Mal Seizures (the most well-known form of "epileptic attacks") at 14, but, unknowingly, suffered from Simple Partial Motor Seizures for seven year prior... I find myself highly at odds with how to feel about this game's tone and subject, since epilepsy, in general, isn't used much in games, especially horror. However, this is... not explicit enough in what kinda form of "epileptic attack". If I took an educated, and experienced, guess, I'd say this man suffers from Simple Partial Seizures, under the categories of Motor, Sensory, and Psychic.
Unfortunately, it seems to be played off as more of Schizophrenia or some form of difficult to control mania -- especially since he requires consistent medication, and, most, if not all epileptics will tell you, anticonvulsants tend to last HOURS, not MINUTES. In any normal world, this man wouldn't be outside of a hospital, and if he is, he wouldn't be without medical supervision from friends, family, or live-in nurse.
Having consistent attacks like this is life-altering, and incredibly draining -- something I know from experience -- and he shouldn't be left alone nor on such an obviously weak dosage of medicine..
*TL;DR: This game took an underutilized idea, but poorly utilized it in the biased opinion of a 26-year-old epileptic that's suffered Simple Partial Motor Seizures since age 7, which "evolved" into Grand Mal Seizures at age 14. It could be better, if it was built up with actual displays of what an "epileptic attack" actually does to you, instead of being used to bring on rather bland spooks.*
My wife has Complex partial seizures and epilepsy and from what I can tell there are many types of seizures. How hard has this been for you to find treatment for? Because we have been trying for years and doctors can't seem to find anything that works.
@@jimbothompkins I'm... not entirely sure how to answer this, since I'm not a medical professional. Personally, once my epilepsy was diagnosed properly, I was put on a battery of pills of different strengths until one brand and one strength worked. As I grew, I needed adjustment, and even switched brands, but once I was out of puberty, I've been maintaining the same medicine.
Your best bet is to see a specialist, which is what I was assigned, and discuss your options.

Hey, dunno if you guys'll read this, but I'm a big fan here, and an I've had epilepsy since I was a kid because of a birth defect. I was really excited to see a game mention it, because surprisingly people don't really know a lot about it. I'm about 12 minutes in, and I can tell you, when you have a seizure, sometimes it's not falling down and convulsing. Sometimes it's flashing vision, and a panic that grips your whole body, and then suddenly you blink and you're in a different room in your house entirely, and you don't know how you got there-- like what happened in the game. An incoming seizure, for me, feels like an electric shock up my spine. Most people can feel them coming on because of the warning signs like that. My epilepsy is the most common form of epilepsy, and it can be caused by injuries, certain medications, strokes, etc. Seizures can also cause hallucinations, or strange smells or sounds.
I often wake up in hallways or in some rare cases even outside, because when I felt my seizure coming on I was filled with that panic and ran for help, only to fall unconscious while still *appearing* conscious because I'm still walking. I've been told I've had entire conversations, but my responses didn't make any sense. You literally remember nothing. It's like you teleported, or woke up from a dream. Sometimes, it feels like you're outside of your body, or not in real life, or you've somehow traveled back in time (sort of a really strong deja vu). Sometimes I'll suddenly lose the ability to read, write, or speak. Sometimes I get the urge to scream or laugh, or my head will start turning, or I'll start repeating words like a broken record. When I do have a seizure with convulsions (gran mals, the ones people think of when they think "seizure"), I wake up in terrible pain, sick to my stomach, exhausted, and with a mouth full of blood from biting holes in my tongue and cheeks. I usually have to sleep for a day or two.
TL;DR: Epilepsy is unpredictable, and when you're at its mercy, truly horrifying. It's a great idea for a first-person horror game, as it's kind of like being possessed, because you're truly vulnerable and the only control you have over it is medication. Without the treatment for severe seizures, every day is like a 24-hour game of russian roulette where you're the only player. Something as simple as taking a shower or going down steps is suddenly a gamble.
Not to be confused with branch of insanity, trunk of insanity, or partially developed leaf of insanity.

That first girl died to a shitty zombie because she had a backpack and two purses full of batteries so she could film for 30mins. That trope in gaming needs to end. There's flashlights you can literally just shake and make light with a superconductor. Where's my jack off a flashlight for dim led light horror game? This type of design is so bad. It keeps a player looking down scrounging for batteries which gives access to cheap scares, but robs them of the area you built for them.You can make something pants shittingly scary without having to put on false pressure of a scrounging for light mechanic indie horror guys.
Gilbals in one of the early shitstorms, Pat describes one of my favorite ways of programming a flashlight: they give you a really good permanent flashlight... so they can take it away from you whenever they want, by making it flicker or shut off during important story beats or jump-scares.
That's better, but still a pretty bad gimmick. A better solution would just be dim ambient lighting and not make your game a pitch black hole to trip through. Indie Horror Devs love their flashlights a little too much that it's made creativity in the department lacking. A good flashlight's a good flashlight, but don't build a game around it.
Well, Tattletale had that exact flashlight mechanic. It had that whole jack off to charge the flashlight thing, but with the catch that it made a shit-ton of noise. Noise that if you were too close, the monster furby would get you. But you had to keep the light on, otherwise the tattletale in your hand would start pissing itself and make noise on it's own when the light was too dim. Interesting interaction at the very least.
The calzone zone may be beaten...but will its lower calorie count older brother, the Low Cal Calzone Zone, ever be defeated?!

Over the space of 6 years, going 30 at a time (that's 180, folks!), it may surprise you but it is possible to run _out_ of recognizable horror games! And that's not including the horror games they do outside of october. So yeah, they tend to rely on newer, less known games.

Kinda hard to pull off though. So-bad-it's-good is best when it's the unintentional offspring of incompetence and sincerity. Like Tommy Wiseau's The Room, Samurai Cop, and a Japanese voice director with a poor grasp of English giving English-speaking voice actors little to no context on their lines and then proceeding to put the worst takes into the final product. If you try and force it then you end up with something like Samurai Cop 2 or Space Cop.
What's with all these indie horror games with "insanity" on them? I also remember Guillermo del Toro making a game called inSANE before THQ went bankrupt. Geez, that guy is a curse when it comes to games.
It's one of those "scary" buzzwords.
I'd much prefer if they'd use regular sanity and add something to that. Ex: Sanity's Requiem, Sane no longer, Sanity's Rupture, Exodus of the Sane, Sanity's Betrayal, or Sanity's Backdown.
Either they use the word "insane" or some word based on a mental illness. Like "Paranoia".

Hakkai181 Well, its also a video game so the lantern would have also eaten batteries like it was a buffet. I hate that trope in games, oh these batteries that show full charge, only last 5 minutes. What kind of fucking device uses that much power to give off so little light. Have the device get damaged or something, not fundamentally change how batteries work.

That is one of the most accurate renditions of an epilepsy attack I have seen. especially from the one who is having the attack. I have epilepsy and it is very much like a blackout. you wake up not knowing what happened or where you were. From people seeing it though its scary as shit! The worst part of it for me at least, was chewing up my tongue so bad that when I woke up i couldn't eat solid food for two weeks, anything that touched my tongue during that time hurt like hell.
I enjoyed this video a lot Matt and pat, i actually had to turn off my monster hunter xx and the lights so I could enjoy this more instead of just post memes in the comment section
As much as I enjoy the Shitstorm, these past two or three years have been sad reminders of the pathetic, shitass state of modern horror games. I am so utterly fucking sick of games like this.
Seems good developers are simply gone or not backed up by dumbass publishers who think that horror games aren't worth making - so we're left with a bunch of indie devs who rehash popular tropes because they don't have the drive or talent to do much else.
