  • The Bill Dixon designed Hylas 57 is a beautiful luxury performance cruising monohull that has it all. I was extremely impressed by this one. It combines all the comforts of land-based living with cruising in style and speed to take you across oceans.
    Let me know what you think! Stay tuned for the sailing video.

    Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

      Aldrin, have you never sailed on anything larger than a Hobe Cat? Insane is a perfect descriptor. So much beauty and so much stupidity combined. Whose idea was it to put an eight inch tall Cigarette Boat style wind deflector on this 57 foot sail boat? This HYLAS 57 has a wonderous, ocean going/useful, solid hard Bimini. The dodger, weirdly absent from this boat, should be constructed of Lexan and stainless steel, integral from deck to Bimini with an equivalent strength and durability. Alas, not so. Perhaps some Glad Wrap instead?
      The 56, 54, 49 and 46 interiors were so much more beautiful, elegant and nautically executed. What happened, who took over and threw up upon Hylas' classic décor? Granted, the interior is not as cheap looking as a Beneteau, but it has been downgraded and pointed in that pegboard Ikea kind of direction. Why no dorades? Is interior ventilation passé, or is mold the new black, or is constant air conditioning the new green?
      It is indeed a gorgeous boat on the outside (except for the speedboat wind deflector) and has an excellent interior design, if not an attractive interior décor. But is it a real voyager or just dining eye candy to show off to your clients or mistresses at dock? Dual helms, exposed to the elements are good for racing with a substantial crew. But for voyaging couples, a single helm station enclosed and protected from the wind, spray, driving rain, heat and cold, is far superior.
      I don't know what this boat is designed to achieve, but I do not like it. However, if you want to see what a really outstanding Hylas voyager looks like, Google the Fetching Lights U-Tube. There is an owner who knows sailboats! It is a horrible pity that Hylas did not take any of his improvements to heart.

      @@gregorydamario7977 aaaah sorry mate f I happened to offended u somehow, but i'm not really a mono Hall lover, I think I just do know how to appreciate things to which I believe, I like the design of the boat so much, yes! Ido! But it does not mean I Already like the performance it self until I have'nt test them yet, so back of dude! I would rather listen to people who r really sailors because what? They have better ideas and huge experience also they tell viewers the reality and practicality of life when u r in the middle of the ocean, because of, high risk! Doesn't matter whether ur boat is old r brand new what matter is how would you deal specially on big storm and massive wave, not to mention the encounter f pirates, and do you have an idea f crossing on a Pacific when u encounter these huge things,..

    It's interesting to note how the introduction of composites in sailboat construction the last 10 or so years has allowed designers to increase freeboard without raising the center of gravity. The result is that boats of the same size nowadays have 8-12 inches more headroom below decks, creating the opportunity for those tall walk-thru areas at the galley, nav station, engine room and aft stateroom. Also, with the full beam being carried all the way to the stern, the cockpit and aft stateroom become enormous. We have a 15 year old 54 foot Jeanneau and I'm jealous of the space this boat has on-decks and below. Of course, all it takes is money.

    • @shorttimer874
      @shorttimer874 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fun would come trying to maneuver in a crosswind when docking with all that freeboard, but I'm guessing with the front and rear thrusters who cares.

    • @svechappe6075
      @svechappe6075 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shorttimer874 Definitely, the thrusters are going to be essential. We dual hand ours and bow thruster and headsets are mandatory when docking.

      This is true but between the forward cabin and the small bunk room and the stern master stateroom, that’s ok for possibly five . If 10 or more were making the trip the center salon is where everyone else will sleep so 10-12 people making a passage , the salon area will always be packed . I may have made the salon area smaller and added two more small bunk rooms .

    So 1.8 Mil for this versus a Cat offering the same space and cruising capabilities easily costing two to three times more. If I were to go Mono Hull a boat such as this would be it for me. Also consider using the formula of the square root of that 52'9" waterline, and I don't even know if that's taken at the usual 15 degree heel, 7.27 x 1.34 = 9.74 means she should easily hit 8 to 10 knots all day long in a decent wind. This is a go anywhere boat in luxurious comfort except for maybe the extreme northern latitudes. Just stunning and thank you for putting her on my radar young man. I honestly had no idea how far the newer Mono's have come to breaching the gap to Luxury Cat type cruising...

    I really enjoy the boat tours, your information on the raritan electro scan is not quite accurate. It does treat the waste via electricity and by doing so kills any bacteria/viruses in the waste, and then the waste is subsequently pumped overboard. However, it does not reduce the waste to a form where there are no visible solids. Most coastal no discharge zones have a requirement for no visible solids within their limits. In the opinion of this technician, holding tanks are still the best option for smaller vessels that range in near coastal waters.

    To do extensive sailing it needs crew to polish and look after everything but has no room for them. At the same time it could be short handed with all the hydraulics then it will look like crap because you can’t keep it cleaned and polished.

    Nice boat for corporate charters or doing the Bimini shuffle, but as a blue water boat or making passage on long crossings? No thanks.
    No spray dodger, lines way forward of the helms (yes, even though some of those winches can let out line).
    It's a nice toy, but not much fun for long range cruising.

    Probably one of the finest boats that will never be on my wish list. I was expecting it to be a pilot house or at least have some sort of inside helm with a 360 view... and the cornered backrests in the cockpit is a total dealbreaker. You will never find a comfortable place to lay back and rest while looking forward under way. Way too expensive boat for such sloppy design details.

    The last part of your videos with the "continues tour" doesn't make any sense. Showing the exact same ting that you did just right now doesn't make any sense. At least not when you making the videos alone by your self.
    When you have wifey with you and you guys walks around and talk about every detail than I understand the continuous tour at the end.
    But not when you are alone.
    But all in all lovely video as always.
    Thanks.

    I’m sorry, but other than the size of the boat, it doesn’t feel like a boat. Not my kind of boat. It’s a show piece not a boat.
    The problem with light horizontal wood is that it’s trendy. Will go out of style. Then what?

      Paint it in navy and white stripes? That should be coming back in style by the time we tire of this style?

      Pretty much the trend on all new boats these days unless you go semi-custom/custom. Production boats, even at the high end like this, are using laminates now because wood and even wood veneer is too expensive to hit their targeted price point. Our dock neighbor last summer bought a brand new Beneteau 461 ($550K) that has a similarly finished interior. He came over to tour our 2005 Jeanneau with its teak interior and when he got down below, he looked around and said "You know, nobody does this anymore."

    This is a truly beautiful and well crafted lady! But as a cat guy, I don't understand paying so much for so "little" space. You can get this living area in a 48' Leopard (exception made for the incredible master suite and woodwork) for a million bucks.

    Meh... It's like a Ritz Carlton that floats. I prefer less glitz. Half the fun of sailing is knowing that you're at sea and are having to rough it a bit. There is no roughing it on this boat.

    Ok...very nice boat and presentation. But, pretty dumb to be wearing a mask when you are the only one in the boat. It gives a bad feeling and reminder of covid which takes away from the experience.

      @@ianfurqueron5850 It’s all good. I also really enjoy looking at boats videos and wishing. Maybe I’m just in a bad mood. Maybe I’m just over the last 10 months. This channel from its humble beginnings is now something completely different , so I think I’ll just subscribe.

      @@hmwolford1 I agree the channel content has changed and I enjoyed the sailing and DIY videos more, but I can also appreciate how their life circumstances have forced their hand and they have to play the cards they have. And for the time being that means doing boat tours. Some of the tours will be of modest boats and some of pure dream/fantasy boats. Including both is probably the best for them at this time. Hopefully in a few years after they'll have saved up some money and get another boat of their own (and baby duty is a little easier to deal with), the content will go back to some of the earlier style.
