I really like how the whole purpose of the Cult of Skaro was to actually innovate and think outside the box compared to regular Daleks. It allows for interesting scenarios, like in this episode, when Dalek Sec decides to try the whole human-dalek evolution plan, while the other three aren't entirely on board because they're worried about the purity of their species. It makes for an interesting scene, cause it's rare to see Daleks disagreeing with each other and actually debating.
I never could hate this episode like some do, honestly - while I wouldn't consider it (or the following part) in any way among the best DW stories (or even in my Top 10 Tennant Era stories), I honestly found what the writers were doing narratively thought-provoking and interesting. Execution is maybe not to everyone's liking, but the idea is intriguing - as you put it, it also shows how the Cult of Skaro were (ironically) made to serve a different purpose from most of their kind yet as Thay, Jast and Caan demonstrate it's not IN the Dalek's normal nature to not conform to their usual ideas of superiority and perfection...
It reminds me of how someone pointed out that, unlike the Cybermen they don't actually change their appearance because to a Dalek, their current form IS the ideal. With stairs for instance, they pointed out to a Dalek (paraphrased): "pepper-pot design is not wrong; *stairs* are wrong"; apply similar to their eyestalks ("My vision is not impaired!") and basically everything else. No wonder "Victory of the Daleks" pissed off the fanbase with the candy-coloured Daleks that were quickly phased out after Series 5 (they were the only part of that episode I found objectionable, personally).
I love Eric's comment on genuinely fearing the Daleks now.

Yeah, it does that almost by stealth. I never knew the culmination of Doctors and companions smoothly transitioning since the beginning of the series had pulled me in until Sarah Jane leaves, and suddenly the Doctor is travelling on his own with no links to the past. It was like a gut punch.
Making them into pigs was to practice creating hybrids before the attempted the dalek-human hybrid.
Fun fact: The actor who played Salomon is the same actor who played Captain Panaka in SW The Phantom Menace (the bodyguard of Padme)

The original Daleks were a race called the Kaleds that were mutated by the Kaled scientist Davros and put into machine bodies; the Daleks revere Davros as a God for creating them. The human Daleks in Season 1 were impure, not proper Daleks. You can't just make new Daleks out of different species, that goes against the core Dalek philosophy of purity. That's where the idelogical conflict between Dalek Sec and the other members of the Cult of Skaro comes from in the second half of this two-parter; Sec is willing to experiment and sacrifice Dalek purity for the sake of survival, the other 3 are not.
Five years later but no it doesn't the core Dalek philosophy is survival no matter what when it comes down to it they true survival over there xenophobia
@@plantainsame2049 5 years later - you're wrong. Plenty of Daleks have sacrificed or killed themselves to uphold purity. "Survival" is not a core tenet of the Dalek belief system. Since classic Who it has always been about purity.
@@DextroDNAOfficial they were all about purity they would still be the kalid's Evolution would damage their purity there's a reason there are so many unpure variants of Daleks the RTD era being the prime example.
Also technically the the remaining three Crucible Daleks from who appeared and victory of the Daleks having survived Journey's End would be more pure than the Paradigm daleks to the simple fact that The Crucible ones were made out of Davros DNA so they have pure Khaled DNA then whatever was in the progenitor device which is from the time War which was a period where they were clones of clones of the genetic material of the original not to mention the mutations caused by the time War yet the Paradigm think they're more pure.
Anyway the Daleks concept of Purity is a nonsensical thought they and it does prove that they are a failure because it gets in the way of their true main objective survival they were made because skaro being ravaged by War.
The Daleks ultimately in Universe are ridiculous concept out of universe they're great villains

Meh, I still prefer it to Victory of the Daleks and The Witches Familiar/The Magicians Apprentice, but I agree it's the weakest Dalek story of the RTD era. Still not exactly bad though, the two episodes that followed this two-parter, now that was bad.

I love the scene with the Doctor and Tulila hiding from the Dalek, the way it's shot seeing the shadow first does make it scarier. Nowadays the Daleks are a joke.

I can see why you think that, but the actual story is pretty interesting and it makes sense for the last 4 Daleks to try something like this. The Daleks become a joke officially in Series 5, the power rangers. Since that episode they just weren't threatening anymore.

cybermen and daleks are similar in removing emotion, the difference is daleks only remove the weak emotions and focus things like hatred and anger, the cybermen suppress all emotion.

I never realized that was Andrew Garfield! After watching Hacksaw Ridge starring him as the late Desmond Doss, he continues to fit in past time projects. He really nails the accents and really does look like he can be from anywhere from the late 1800s to mid 1900s. Love Andrew!

I love your rrs on s3. Some powerful social commentary on society then, and now. A more gritty and hefty tone after end s2. Even keenly aware of just what Martha had to sacrifice and do to keep the dr from losing himself and humanity in the process. She is phenomenal.

Hugh Quarshie played Sunda Kastagir in Highlander and Captain Panaka in Star War Episode 1- The Phantom Menace. Also the episode stars Andrew Garfield, aka Spiderman.

It's funny. Classic Doctor Who episodes would be 4-6 episode serials and many Dalek stories would be titled "of the Daleks" and the cliffhanger for the first episode would be the Dalek reveal.

That little green blob with tentacles found in the sewer was how the Dalek mutant looked like in the original series.
I don't think the idea behind the human-Dalek fusion was to go around and bang people to rebuild the Dalek race. Based on the conversation they had on top of the Empire State building, I think the Daleks have just noticed the fact that humans have tendency to be resilient, and to bounce back and rebuild no matter how hard things get for them. Obviously, with the Dalek species constantly on the verge of existence, the Daleks feel like they could take advantage of that kind of trait, even if it means diluting their poor Dalek gene pool.

At least the episodes that mention Daleks in the title don't present them as being the shocking twist at the end of the first part. Almost every Dalek story of the second through to fifth doctor treated the fact that the daleks appeared as if it were some kind of huge twist, even though the serials had "dalek" in the title.

I can't wait for when they reach season 10 and the master unmasked himself. It was spoiled for us in the trailer but they won't see that. Imagine a character returning 6 seasons later out of nowhere.
I lost my shit when Andrew Garfield popped up. Was not expecting him to be on this show.
This is probably the only time the Daleks have tried to evolve using other species but seeing as what happened when the lone Dalek absorbed DNA from Rose it is likely not to end well.

Strangely this fits TOO perfect, all in all,, this must have been done on purpose, maybe they knew to that point that Andrew Garfield will b the Spider-Man in the Amazing Spider-Man movies,, Andrew wasnt turned into a pig but still thats awesome, or maybe they made the Simpsons Movie like that cause of this episode... WHO knows ^^

Not the best episode, but it has some things going for it, like the setting, music, and supporting characters.
I think one of the biggest problems most Whovians have with it is that it's EXTREMELY derivative of some Classic Era Dalek stories, like The Evil of the Daleks, that are considered much better.
