Makes you wonder if Robocop 2 was actually meant to be another game but they suddenly decided to slap the characters from the movie on to use as a cash grab.
Laughed heavily about Robocop looking like Cotton Hill. He really does. They are the games that I wonder if tbey can be fixed with a ROM hack, improve the handling and change the player sprite as an example.
38:15 I will say one thing though: Double Dragon looks actually pretty good for an Atari 2600 game, the background detail is actually quite nice - considering the anemic graphical capabilities of the platform. The gameplay is trash and the music plays way too slow, but still, Activision games always looked great on the 2600 and I'd give that much to Double Dragon.
Someone should make a whole channel about bad retro games. They could even make it funny by acting overly angry about it. Why hasn't anyone ever thought of this?
I believe it, that's like some E.T. Atari or DOOM 3DO shit, and the final release supports that story. I'd like to read up on it if you can point me to a source.
12:47 "It's like you touch the top of the building, you die, you touch the ceiling, you die, you touch the floor, you die, too far to the right, you die, too far to the left, you die, you die, you die, you die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, DIE!" - The Angry Video Game Nerd (Tails copies Silver Surfer's Game Over pose)
That comparison of the Robocop sprite to Cotton Hill has me actually wanting a platformer with Cotton. "I killed fitty men, thanks for your cooperation!"
TMNT Tournament Fighters has a special place in my heart. It's a very love-hate relationship for the Genesis version, though, thanks to the fighting game jank. I still wish that Konami's original characters got the action figure treatment (including Sisyphus). Mystery of Convoy is funny as Takara misspelled their character's name on the packaging and in the game. For those curious, Convoy, not Comvoy as they wrote it, is Takara's name for Optimus Prime. Headmaster is better than Mystery (low bar), but only by a little since now you have a health gauge.
I'm old enough to remember that some of those were widely known as horrible games back when there were released: I do remember Dark Castle being deemed "worst game ever" by every game magazine I read back then (mainly PlayerOne in France). Speaking of which, my parents bought some of the infamous bad games when I had my first megadrive for Christmas: Sword of Sodan, Fantasia and Zoom! (hint for the next "bad games" video 😉). Btw, I'd like to say a word or two about Shadow of the Beast on genesis: the port made by EA is really broken in many ways, yet I recently discovered that the Japanese version was ported by someone else, and it is MUCH better in all aspects!
By far the biggest let down of my entire childhood for video games was RoboCop on the NES. I spent all summer playing the arcade version at local establishments and the letdown I felt when I popped the NES game in was indescribable... I mean it's over 30 years later and I'm commenting on it.
@@ResidentXombie I've beaten Robocop 1 on NES. I've never made it past the first level of Robocop 2. I completed it without collecting enough "nuke," had to endure the shooting section, and promptly shut the game off. I actually came close to purchasing the game a second time before I remembered that I had a copy and had turned it off in under 10 minutes. I guess I tried to wipe my memory of the game like Robocop getting his prime directives wiped in the movie.
I remember a friend in middle school wanting me to play Shadow of the Beast II. He made it sound like this awesome game. I ended up playing for a half hour and decided that it was god awful. Honestly, all I remembered about it all these years later was the opening music piece and the death screen music. There was absolutely nothing memorable about the gameplay.
never played the sega DD ports until much later in life via emulation. I honestly thought as a kid DD was an NES original, and didn't know it was an arcade port. Never saw any of the 3 DD arcade games in the wild growing up. Only saw a play choice/DD NES arcade cabinet.
The third one was awful. You could go into an in-game shop, and buy weapons and life refill items, but for an actual credit that was in the machine (they were mostly 50p/c by the time Double Dragon 3 came out), so instead of picking up some bin-chicken and a baseball bat like in Final Fight or SoR, you paid an extra dollar to get them in DD 3. I think they invented microtransactions.
Honestly same here. But arcade cabinets were big and expensive. I played them less at arcades and more at random places like movie theaters, restaurants and bars, so there weren't as many machines, and the machines that existed were more likely to be something more popular. Something like Contra 3 from Konami, Marvel vs Capcom, or the latest 3D fighting games. Another rare but popular choice was a Neo*Geo cabinet that you could swap games or have multiple games on. Metal Slug + Bubble Bobble + some SNK fighter.
I first played Double Dragon on my friend's Master System. Having a Mega Drive and a copy of Streets of Rage by then, I had to laugh at my friend's lot. But still standing on its own, it wasn't too bad.
Shadow of the Beast could have been a really engaging Metroidvania type experience, but they went for 'arcade hard' instead. It was great on the Amiga, but only because I was 6 at the time :)
I remember being so excited to find out about that Transformers game when I started to get into emulation 20 years ago. That excitement died immeasurably quickly.
I thought Shadow of the Beast 2 was quite decent, plus - it's got vibes for days! Most people fail to realize it's not a standard action game, but rather an arcade adventure, with inventory puzzles and a definitive order of events. The most fun part is figuring everything out, because once you do, the whole thing can be finished in under 15 minutes. Though the Amiga version is prettier, the Genny one plays much better and has an actual ending cutscene. The SegaCD (and FM Towns) conversion feels very different and lacks in the atmosphere department IMO.
Yeah my friend and I played SotB 2 all the time when it came out on the Amiga, it was so much fun trying to figure out what you had to do and it hand atmosphere in spades. Trial and error was very common in games back then, it was just the norm to have to play through sections of a game again because you died, we didn't think anything of it.
I would definitely subscribe to some more videos like this! This video had me laughing my arse off my chair in certain parts even though I don't agree with very single game in it. Sometimes you just gotta crap on bad games where laughing at how bad they are in humour is the only saving grace. ''Supercross Mcgrath 2000'' had me laughing so much when you said that we couldn't even blame the gaming console for the older graphics lol. Lots of crapping on Acclaim which was great and well deserved. Arena and Flying Edge were subsidiaries of Acclaim so if you see those names, you've been warned! ''Wayne's World'' got another mention as well as ''Dark Castle'' from EA which was to be expected.
I'm always amazed at how well my younger self managed to steer clear of garbage. I can honestly look back at my collection of NES, SNES, and N64 games and say I did pretty good. One of the most important rules that never steered me wrong was don't buy a licensed game unless it was by Konami and sometimes Capcom.
What was that game where you play a flying guy with a wave cannon and and it's a "3d" rail-shooter? I think it was a genesis launch title. That was pretty damn bad.
I wouldn't bother with BTTF2&3 on NES either. It's one of those games that where you have to collect things and are constantly getting attacked, and there is no direction without a guide. BTTF NES is actually a fun 'bad game' once you get the hang of the controls and hit boxes in the game. I beat it many times with assistance at all.
Regarding the first music played, I'm kind of fond of Batman Returns for the Genesis. It's less fun (more frustrating) than the first, but I like all the moves Batman can do. Shadow of the Beast has no nostalgia for me, however. It has the clunky controls of a PC port, which has no place on a console like the 16-bit Sega.
The clunky controls and crusty graphics of Batman Returns on the Genesis give it a unique charm, I actually like that game a lot. I can't honestly say it's a good game, but I do enjoy playing through it regardless.
I like "Tails Sky Patrol." Once you get used to how his ring interacts with objects, it gets pretty good, and it's actually a pretty underrated creative game.
I feel like you should take note that the version of Dark Castle you showed aswell as what the AVGN reviewed is actually a port of the original name on DOS. The reason the controls feel awkward was because the game was NOT meant to be played with a controller. It was originally made to use with a mouse
Damn, the last time I watched a Sega Lord X video I’d never touched a Sega, now there’s a Dreamcast chilling in my room. This content is more important to me than ever!
That Master System Indiana Jones game actually got a Game Gear port that came out in North America. Everything you said about it is valid, but as a kid I didn't have an options so I played the hell out of it.
Regardless of the system, am I the only person on Earth who HATED Double Dragon II? The control scheme just plain sucks! Every time you turn from one direction to the other, the kick and punch buttons flip and you are always kicking backward. Does this not bother anyone else?!
I had Back to the Future 3 on the ZX Spectrum. Now, THAT was a sh*tshow! 😆 SLX, I thank you for playing these abominations so I don't have to! 👍😆 Edit: Yes, please. I would certainly like more in this vein. There's likely a mountain of less than stellar games you could choose from, so keep 'em coming, my good man. I always enjoy your content anyway, but I'm especially entertained by your metaphors, similes and analogies used to describe negative gaming experiences. is it something to do with his voice acting are mostly made by a female? I knew tails is a boy since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the genesis since the Instruction Manual did call him a He.
I have the Sega ages 2500 version of Golden Axe for my PS2.It's on a compilation disc(Sega Classics)that have a few other games included such as Fantasy Zone,Out Run,Space Harrier, etc.Although the graphics are a little bit inferior compared to the original arcade game,I don't believe it belongs on this video. The controls are responsive, the hit detection is good, and the levels are lengthy with good challenge.I still have fun playing this game.(Yes..believe it or not,my console and games are still working as of September 2024!).
As a 12-year-old i couldn't muster much respect for Mario Is Missing, but i feel very differently now. Some of Rob Wallace's renditions of Koji Kondo's mucic are quite dreamy. Beyond that i largely agree that the other games mentioned are substandard at best
Some of my thoughts on the games mentioned: Double Dragon Trilogy: The only good thing about 1 and 2 are that they both run at a rock-solid 60 FPS while the arcade originals struggled to do so. At least if you're playing those games in MAME you can overclock the emulated CPU to fix that. (Have any official rereleases offered that option?) As for 3, it's only redeeming quality is that you're given a set of virtual coins to spend. If 15 coins are the default, (I think 20 is the max), that means they give you $3.75 worth of credits to start, (or $5 for the max!) Yeah, I'd doubt anyone would spend that much in the arcades on ONE GAME! Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis. I think part of the reason it's a slow, bug riddled mess is because it was a port from the 2005 mobile version; a port of a port! It says a lot when a homebrew demo ends up performing much better. And the guy who made the proof of concept GBA version? None other than Simon "Stealth" Thomley, who'd help develop the official iOS and Android versions alongside Christian Whitehead! Sega knew these guys could do better, so they let them! Transformers: The Mystery of... Comvoy(sic) was actually released to bridge the gap between seasons 3 and 4 since the movie wouldn't be relased in Japan until years later. So if you where a Japanese fan who _HAD_ to know who killed Convoy (Optimus Prime's name in Japan), and didn't want to wait for the movie, you had to suffer through this game. Imagineering used the same engine from those awful Bart Vs games on NES here. The sound you hear when picking up objects is a dead giveaway to that. Wayne's World will have you partying on just like the movies and the original SNL skits! *...NOT!* Dark Castle. From what I've heard, the original computer version is actually decent. At least decent enough to have a fanbase and receive a sequel! The game was meant to be played with a keyboard and a mouse, which you used to aim. I vaguely remember playing either the Mac version and actually getting a fair way through it without the frustration of the Genesis version. Of course Duncan's still pretty weak and can get staggered by falling a short distance, but at least it's actually doable to topple the Black Knight's throne! Street Combat, from what I heard, uses the SNES' interlaced mode despite the screen resolution still being 256×224 rather than 512×448. I don't know why since that only makes the game look blurry.

With the exception of the Turok games they published, 'Acclaim Entertainment' was "LJN 2.0"
What about the Mortal Kombat series? And Alien 3 (Mega Drive) was pretty good too.
@@happyspaceinvader508 I forgot those games were published under their label. I always associated those games with Midway though.
Well, they did actually BUY LJN, so it makes sense that they would become them. Afterall, you are what you eat.
@@theyamo7219 And that perfectly summed up what 'Acclaim Entertainment' was back then.
Even better, what if it was a nerd? 🤔
They could call it the annoyed TV toy dork
Apparently Sonic Genesis was made by 1 guy in a single month
I believe it, that's like some E.T. Atari or DOOM 3DO shit, and the final release supports that story. I'd like to read up on it if you can point me to a source.
I believe this as well. No way that's a team effort with a decent budget. Pure cash grab.
I would not be surprised, it looks to me like it looked, sounded and played like ass. I'm glad I skipped it entirely.
If it looks like ass, sounds like ass, controls like ass, then it probly is ass! 😂
Maybe it was the guy who made the Mega Man DOS games

(Tails copies Silver Surfer's Game Over pose)
That comparison of the Robocop sprite to Cotton Hill has me actually wanting a platformer with Cotton. "I killed fitty men, thanks for your cooperation!"
Robocop 2 on a NES is one of the worst platformer nightmare that I ever experienced since childhood till present days.
These games must've been tough to replay bro we really appreciate it tho! Awesome video SegaLX
48:38 okay calm down, at least they gave us Re-Volt
By far the biggest let down of my entire childhood for video games was RoboCop on the NES. I spent all summer playing the arcade version at local establishments and the letdown I felt when I popped the NES game in was indescribable... I mean it's over 30 years later and I'm commenting on it.
I beat Robocop 2 and Terminator 2 on NES, only because that’s all I had back in 1992!
I think I would have shelved my NES and played some boardgames instead.
@@midwestmonster9886 lol, you have no idea how much of a Robocop and Terminator fan I was. I couldn’t stand The Predator NES game though.
The worst part of Tail Spin on Genesis is knowing it's a million times better than the Turbografx Tail Spin game.
Unfortunately, I had the TurboGrafx version as a kid and it was definitely a bad game.
I played as a kid back then… I thought I liked. Now… it’s really terrible!
Great idea for video. There was a LOT of absolute dreck back then, much worse than today.
never played the sega DD ports until much later in life via emulation.
@@Pythoner
I enjoyed "Double Dragon" on Sega Master System quite a bit, and I generally don't like beat 'em ups.
I love watching this channel before I go to sleep. It always puts me in a really good mood, which in turn gives me good dreams,no joke.
Should've Time stamped this Vid!
Roasting all these games this way is hilarious. 😆
I first read it as "Backhole Assault"
Lol !
Shadow of the Beast could have been a really engaging Metroidvania type experience, but they went for 'arcade hard' instead. It was great on the Amiga, but only because I was 6 at the time :)
It's excruciating. I was so fed up with that design I never want to play it again.
I remember being so excited to find out about that Transformers game when I started to get into emulation 20 years ago. That excitement died immeasurably quickly.
I've always enjoyed Sonic Spinball. I remember beating it just once. But I understand that most never enjoyed it as much.
I love the art in that chester cheeta game
It definitely has it's appeal
Thanks alot Sega Lord X I won't even waste my time playing any of these games 🎯
God, I loved Montana Football on Sega CD lol
I've heard that from a few people here on TH-cam. Maybe it's just me.
I like how the Wayne's world game says not, but without any reference at all to what it's saying it about
He's in denial about being trapped in a shitty game!
Double Dragon 2 on the nes is wicked dope. In fact its like 6 million people's favorite game lol
It's a top tier NES game imo
Eh, I tried playing it. The counterintuitive control scheme and lack of "3D" terrain made for a second-rate affair at best.
The CPU is Eternal Champions are TMNT Tournament Fighters on the Mega Drive making it not worth persevering a rare misfire from Konami.
Double dragon on the 2600 is too funny.
What was that game where you play a flying guy with a wave cannon and and it's a "3d" rail-shooter? I think it was a genesis launch title. That was pretty damn bad.
The 7800 version actually plays reasonably well and the sprites are decent sized
Damn, PS2 Golden Axe got in this while PC-Engine CD Golden Axe did not.... that's scary!
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Bill and Ted on nes
"But why would you do that to seven other people?" One of the sharpest lines I've ever heard, about a video game. Nice.
I really appreciated the grappling hook, cape, and utility belt mechanics
@@joeyjo-joshabadu9636 exactly! And the bat shower
The clunky controls and crusty graphics of Batman Returns on the Genesis give it a unique charm, I actually like that game a lot. I can't honestly say it's a good game, but I do enjoy playing through it regardless.
I enjoyed it renting it back in the day but when I went back to it it just didn't hold my interest
I like "Tails Sky Patrol." Once you get used to how his ring interacts with objects, it gets pretty good, and it's actually a pretty underrated creative game.
If there's LJN in the logo, avoid
Sega Lord throwing shades for 55min is actually way more enjoyable than I would have thought XD
I feel like you should take note that the version of Dark Castle you showed aswell as what the AVGN reviewed is actually a port of the original name on DOS. The reason the controls feel awkward was because the game was NOT meant to be played with a controller. It was originally made to use with a mouse
I actually enjoy Tails' Skypatrol. Seeing as how Tails' one of my favorite characters.
“It’s a shit show of monumental proportions and should be stricken from history…” 🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely love when our guy tears into a certified garbage game.
Regardless of the system, am I the only person on Earth who HATED Double Dragon II? The control scheme just plain sucks! Every time you turn from one direction to the other, the kick and punch buttons flip and you are always kicking backward. Does this not bother anyone else?!
It bothers me. It's a counterintuitive scheme likely implemented to "innovate" upon the beat 'em up genre.
I’ve seen all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming
Me too! Since Pong I've played everything. What a life of gaming indeed!
just don't make it your life
I had Back to the Future 3 on the ZX Spectrum. Now, THAT was a sh*tshow! 😆
SLX, I thank you for playing these abominations so I don't have to! 👍😆
Edit: Yes, please. I would certainly like more in this vein. There's likely a mountain of less than stellar games you could choose from, so keep 'em coming, my good man. I always enjoy your content anyway, but I'm especially entertained by your metaphors, similes and analogies used to describe negative gaming experiences.
"The vinegar in the open wound that is a video game!" 🤣
A weird side note: I used to think Tails was a female. 😅
is it something to do with his voice acting are mostly made by a female?
I knew tails is a boy since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the genesis since the Instruction Manual did call him a He.
I think Shadows of thje beast looks pretty cool...I'm used to the whole 16 bit, trial and error, die a lot, gameplay

I fuckin loved that game as a kid 😂😂
As a 12-year-old i couldn't muster much respect for Mario Is Missing, but i feel very differently now. Some of Rob Wallace's renditions of Koji Kondo's mucic are quite dreamy.
Beyond that i largely agree that the other games mentioned are substandard at best
Ever since I started collecting games back in the 80s I have always been extremely wary of any licence tie-in. Exhibit A is this video!! 😀
Some of my thoughts on the games mentioned:
Double Dragon Trilogy: The only good thing about 1 and 2 are that they both run at a rock-solid 60 FPS while the arcade originals struggled to do so.
*...NOT!*
Dark Castle.
It's a shame none of the double dragon console ports were any good. The arcade original is a classic. 😢😢
first 2 NES DD's are good, overall. Only really wonky stuff is the platforming segments.
The Master System one was okay back when it came out
Dark Castle is epically bad. I would almost recommend it just for how bad it is if you're looking for all-time stinkers.
It was great on the Mac. Either it's better or Mac gamers weren't as fussy back then due to slim pickings. It's probably a bit of both.
Love videos like this brings back my own disappointing experiences.
I've loved you're vocal delivery for years dude, but it's really something special when you talk about shit games
