Nice to see you caught the birdie on the side of the house. I take that route every 2 weeks to buy for my business at jetro. Never seen anyone walking the sidewalks. May have to give that a shot. Thanks for the inspiration and great vid!

I really loved this video & idea. Some days are not inspiring to go out and you mixed things up by shooting square and made a rainy day in an urban environment fun. I have an xt2 & never knew about shooting in this crop format. I recently shot film in a newly acquired TLR and 6x6 medium format. I was somewhat disappointed in about half my compositions as I tried to fit too much in the square. Better to keep it more simple on picking a subject as those were my better shots… you nailed it. like a tennis shoe or outhouse. I need more practice of square using my xt2 as practice with film gets expensive. Thanks Omar! You always make me laugh along with your education & inspiration.

Great tips Omar. I am amazed how you made artful photos on Tonnelle Avenue. I was just in the Teterboro area with the gloomy weather, I wasn't inspired to photograph anything. I wish I would have seen this video while I was there.

I walked by a decrepit old house today-probably built in the 1920s and abandoned many years ago. It caught my attention so I took several photographs of it.
The images weren’t shot they way, but inspired by your video, I cropped one of them to a 1x1. Wow! The cropping really brought that old house photo to life! It forced the eye right to the house and cut out all of the surrounding distractions.
What a terrific tip, Omar! You just enhanced my photography skills in one fell swoop!

I shot a lot in 6x6 medium format (120 film). The square has a balance: same horizontal and vertical angle of view, symmetry, circular composition... No need to change the camera orientation (forget the portrait grip then). I like your approach; cropping in post-production is a crutch for me... Thanks for showing the dark side of NJ.

Liking this - it's unusual for me to shoot in 1x1 in-camera but I crop to 1x1 often. I remember when I first shared 1x1 photos, I used a similar white border as you have - not quite Polaroid look, but feels nostalgic and works great here.

Interesting Omar, changing the aspect ratio isn't something i do too often, if I do it's usually to 16:9. In daylight I always have the ISO on auto with a range of 160-800 which should take care of the shutter speed if stopping down the aperture ring.

What a coincidence - I’ve just come back in from my morning cycle on which I took my Fujifilm XP120 - waterproof drop-proof pocketable, shooting in black and white - I very much recommend the XP series for rain and crap weather, doesn’t have to be the latest model, as far as I can see they’re all about the same inside with just feature changes here and there, pick up a secondhand one if you see one cheap (mine was an unbelievable £30!)

Isn't it time for all cameras to have square sensors? The final crop could be set in-camera or in post. No more tilting the body to put it into portrait orientation! The body's dimensions would change slightly as well as the display screen. Otherwise, everything else is the same, except that we are liberated from choosing the crop the moment we press the shutter.

I've shot mainly in 1:1 since I went over to shooting mainly on M43 cameras (Lumix GX1, GF1 and Olympus EP1 and EP2 IR converted), compacts and mobile devices. I find it works so much better for me, but I suppose that comes from spending a lot of time using Hasselblads back in the early 1980s.
