    You don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, and so this week Damian gets his hands on the brand new 2019 Porsche 911 992 C4S - the very latest sports car from Zuffenhausen.
    This controversial Porsche features a brand new gear shifter, a retro-inspired interior, sculpted body with a much larger integrated rear wing, it’s turbo-charged, and it’s even bigger than the previous 911! Lots to talk about, then. Enjoy.

    I own a 991.2 C2GTS and recently tested a 992 C4S since the dealer were offering a very good trade-in deal. I like the looks of the 992, except for the glossy plastic and that strange PDK gear selector (they should have just gone for all buttons) in the interior. But the engine noise kills it for me. Besides everything sounding chocked it also missing that rushing intake noise up top. Another thing is that the PDK is set up more for comfort rather than sharp changes, it is actually rather noticeable when you are going through the gears manually.
    The most dividing change for me is the steering feel, I can tell that the front will be able to corner faster, but there is something lost in terms of the enjoyment I get out of it. I do not want to use words like it feels disconnected or less responsive. So I will go with the description that it is less enjoyable if that makes sense.
    There needs to be a more clear leap in performance for these compromises to make sense to me. Hopefully the electrification to the power-train coming with the 992.2 will offer just that. It is clear to me that the transmission and the car overall is designed to handle more weight, power and torque, so my hopes are high for 992.2.

    Nothing wrong with this car being a bit of a grand tourer. I think that's a big plus, actually. And if you're going to road trip it, might as well have a quieter exhaust note too. If you really have to have a louder exhaust, that's probably an easy and quick mod too. Thanks for posting this video, I enjoyed it and learning about this car immensely.

    Definitely in a Porsche frame of mind lately, it seems. Which is fine. I love the colour, even the seat belts. You're right- 911s need to be in a colour that rips your eyeballs out and it certainly beats charcoal grey or silver. I wish the market wasn't so SUV focused- I would love to see Porsche make more cars than just 911 variants. Does anyone else miss the 944? I even miss the 928 S4, even though design elements of the 928 have been infused into other Porsches- like the Cayenne and Panamera, the styling only ever looked good on the 928. Great video, thanks!

    Great (balanced) vid. The 911 has become the Honda Fireblade of the sportscar world .. maybe a bit too 'safe', but every mutli-car garage needs one because it 'does what it says on the tin' all day every day .... and if budget allows there's always the GT cars to give you the extra buzz. Will be chopping in my 991.2 tS as long as the 992 tS isn't hybrid …… :(

    What color is your car? Couldnt resist. 911 is definitely a GT cruiser. Love the look, but hate the size. Porsche has done me a favor and my bank account thanks them. 997 is the last 911 IMHO. Largest a 911 should ever be. Even then it was getting porky. Ceramics are absolutely amazing. Nice car, but not for me. Will keep my 997 gt3 and 993 c4s. Perfect combo and will add a 997 turbo next in manual. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks Damian - great review and nice to hear genuine honesty from a reviewer, instead of fawning praise: Porsche have an almost impossible task with the 911 - I mean, how do you improve a car that dynamically has led it's sector for so long, without improving its performance capability, at the expense of accessible entertainment?
    Like you, I love some of the historic styling cues that have been included on the 992 and technically it's a superior car to the 991 in quite a number of areas but with each generation, something is gained but a small piece of '911ness' is lost.
    I'm a massive Porsche fan and a 911 owner but despite my initial excitement over the 992, I'm in no hurry to 'upgrade' from my 991.1 C4S, which for me combines everything I currently want from a 911 - it drives superbly, is more than fast enough, provides a wonderful soundtrack from its naturally aspirated engine and is far more practical than most people would think.
    Perhaps in 5 years time the 992 will seem exciting by reference to the anodyne cars of the future but right now I wish Porsche had followed Alpine's approach in certain areas and pared back the 992, to reveal more of the unique nature of the 911: I'm not talking about a stripped out GT car but something that uses technology to deliver purity, instead of adding a layer of complexity.
    I admire all the technical wizardry of the 992 but prefer having a NA soundtrack, 5 real guages and a proper PDK lever, instead of a Braun shaver.

    • @TheCarGuysTV
      @TheCarGuysTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree with your Alpine comment, Mark - that’s exactly what Porsche should look to do - maybe a new T/R model that dumps weight and luxury, but keeps safety.

      Yes, unfortunately though the R was truly great, it was just too rare for most of us to consider and the 991.2 T was a great idea but didn't quite take the concept far enough in my opinion: I suppose my ideal 992 T would be 2S based with the new Wet Mode, have a smaller capacity NA engine (easier to use the revs more of the time on the road) - perhaps a sleeved down/simplified version of the GT3 block, 6 speed M/T - even if it limits top speed (or the new 8Sp PDK if not), standard PSE, PASM (compliant enough for a rough British B road), rear-axle steer, mechanical LSD, a set of the new PSCB, sensibly sized lightweight forged Fuchs style alloys (not too wide), steering feel borrowed dynamically from the GT cars, standard analogue guages (preferably green on black), manual cloth seats (but with lumbar adj - which should be standard) and the option for Pepita fabric 👍, PCM nav but basic air-con, lose weight wherever possible and dispense with as many of the electronic aids as can be lost safely.
      Oh and give me the option for Signal Orange paint 😀

  • @RedC220
    @RedC220 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It’s interesting what you say about the car being so capable and so good that’s it uninvolving. I came to a similar conclusion about a year ago (about modern cars) and I’m yearning for something a bit old and analogue. It’s as though some of the joy of actually driving has been lost in the search for absolute speed and handling ability. It’s like being given the Christmas present you’ve been asking for 11 months only to find it’s actually not what you wanted at all.
    One thing that has advanced though, and this is all manufacturers (well maybe bar BMW), is interiors. Car interiors have improved immeasurably in the last 10 years.
    I’m not a massive fan of touch screen everything though, part of me feels they are inappropriate for a car environment. It’s illegal to use a smart phone whilst driving, yet all the cars controls have been designed to mimic and work like a smart phone screen. I can’t help but feel some of it is a step too far and all the basic operations should be buttons that fall to fingertips without having to take your eyes off the road.
    Great review though, I’m not a massive Porcshe fan, but this is the nicest 911 yet and if I wanted a sports car as a daily driver then I think you’d struggle to better one of these.

    You are so right about the color. I just saw the new 992 in silver at my local dealer in the states. I hate to call it boring but it is. I just had my 991.1 S wrapped in safari gold. It just transformed the car. I really enjoy your channel.

    Great video as usual. Did that car have the sports exhaust fitted? Also, what was its total list? Likely to be $120,000+ with all those options. Personally, I’d wait for the Turbo S. That’ll be a total nut job

    The car looks stellar in yellow. I would never think I would say that about a yellow car but it really looks the business

      Doctor J I currently have a 911 Turbo in Speed Yellow, which I like. The Racing Yellow is a tad too bright for my eyes. But it was a consideration when I ordered my 992 in Guards Red.

    Great review, but will stick with my 991.1 GTS for now as whilst I’m sure the 992 is a lot easier to drive quickly, I enjoy having to rev the normally aspirated to get the performance which on the road is what I want. My GTS feels special to me and like it rewards the better you drive it, I’m not sure the 992 is like that. Quicker and easier doesn’t mean better.

    It was a great review. Thanks a lot. I would buy this car as a GT because it has space, is anonymous, is (presumably) reliable, is comfortable etc. For weekends I'm a manual 981 Boxster type anyway.

    Wanted to love the new 992, but if anything, it's made me appreciate my current 991.2 C2S even more so.. I also have a new Cayenne and the interior tech which it shares with the 992 is great, but.. it somehow makes my 991 feel analogue now.. which is nice!

    • @modernworldiscrap
      @modernworldiscrap 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you have an analog feeling with your 991? Let's jump into a 993 or 996 please...

    • @scottcowan2127
      @scottcowan2127 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modernworldiscrap I've driven 964, 996, not 993, but I have to say I'm also not a huge fan of "older"cars, because in general, they're not always better to drive. There is a happy medium and for me personally it's the 991.2.

      @scottcowan2127 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@campkira Epic car, but.. I actually need 4 seats as I have two small children which means I can share the experience. Also, interior space in the rear of the 992 is no bigger than the 991 despite the increased dimensions. Irrelevant topic for most, but not for me.

    The piece of advice about horses is absolutely true. And even when you overtake horse trailers with horses in it you should shut noisy pipes and overtake gently. Prancing horses on a Ferrari or a Porsche (yes, the Porsche logo has a prancing horse in it, take a look) are fine, prancing horses on the road or on a trailer are horrible.

    I was lucky enough to go to the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone last week. What an experience, what a brand! I can confirm I have caught the Porsche bug! Maybe a 997.1 Carrera 2s manual could be a worthy investment?

  • @Eltern10

    Ok so here is my opinion: The interior is gorgeous, just love it! It's just what makes a Porsche better than other cars: perfection. It might not be as special as the interior of a Ferrari or an AMG GT, but everything is where it should be and the quality is outstanding. The exterior is great, but very similar to the 991, which is the best looking 911 ever made in my opinion. Also, I am not a fan of the wing. I would prefer a naturally aspirated engine, but I understand why they use the turbo one. Conclusion: I would prefer to have the first generation of the 991. For a realistic price of 80k € (germany) you get a nicely equipped, low milage 991 S. Sounds like the better deal to me (992 costs around 150k €).

    We are growing. 😆 🦅🦅🇺🇸
    Love your review. I have had many 911. Sold my gt3RS 997.2 Not keen on the 991 but this 992 starting to grow on me. Still have my 993 and the 718 GT4. Test drove the 992, i have to agreed you. Too distance, not enough noise and too comfortable now. I guess the rear wheel steering is a must for this long wheel base 992 GT cruiser. Btw I took my c63s to the Porsche and test drove the 992. I found my c63s is much firmer ride and sportier feel than the 992 S. So I decided to get the GT4 instead. Now I want to see how is the 992 GT3 and touring will be like. Cheers 🦅🦅🇺🇸

    Excellent as always, I will be hanging onto my 991T however, I agree especially in 4S it’s almost to refined and resolved....however as yesterday I came round a blind corner in the pouring rain to have a fiat parked on wrong side of road with its arse sticking out...I was traveling to fast for conditions as I am an idiot....in my M4 I would be dead.....however I was in my Wife’s Golf R ....absolutely fantastic, stuck to road like a limpet...a lost to be said for 4 wheel drive security....my cream coloured linen trousers however...have a large brown rear end👌🏾

    Great review 👍. The funniest moment for me was at 10:32 with the PDK comment. I have heard from the dozens of Taycan videos that I have watched numerous times from Porsche employees that the 911 will be the last car to Electrify. I can imagine some Hybrid action to bring down the 0-60 and improve the EPA figures to keep the environments happy.
    Again an awesome review and a lovely car. I would personally go Taycan but that's just me.
    Also I would think that you can turn off some of the stability control stuff to make the car more exciting, can't you?

    In the first phase of development, the car was even lighter than the 991.2 - than they needed to add the particular filters and all the stuff which came with that. That brought the weight up again and kills the noise. - It`s just the start because every new car will have to deal with that here in Europe. It`s the end of nice OEM Sounds like we knew it.
