    My first Morgan purchase was 20 years ago. Bought an 1881-S in PCGS MS-64 with what the Coin World advertiser described as "lovely obverse rainbow toning". It has full cartwheel luster on both sides, and cost me $150 back in the day, and is still my favorite piece. Thanks for showing those off. Some of them ought to do extremely well in auction.

    I was recently at a shop and saw an 1884-O Morgan MS64, normally as common as they come, for sale for $600 because of some attractive crescent toning. Not "stunning" by any degree, but I was taken aback by the price premium on the toning. I question how long it will go unsold. Now these you have here are absolutely stunning.

    Thank you! Beautiful looking coins. One in particular caught my eye, but I won't say which one here we will see at the auction if it caught another's interest as well. Thank you again for showing us these beautiful Morgans. Have a good day!

    Some of these coins are actually really beautiful. And that’s coming from somebody that doesn’t necessarily like toners. I just think a lot of the toners ruin what was already a very beautiful coin, but some of these are very nice. I’m like you in that regard, I love frost, I love mirrors, and I love DMPLs.

    Thanks for sharing Daniel. I do like the reverse on that 84O ! My toning preferences are mainly rim or an slight over all tone I guess. Its to each their own ultimately.

    I absolutely love the rainbow toning!!! These are some really nice coins! I'm not into these, but I have friends that are, and I'm sending them your way.

    Toners are my favourite. It's the collection that's never complete and has no parameters. Their also the most fun to look at. Here in Canada there's just a store on the indian reservation you can go buy those magic mushrooms. They're not the super trippy hippie kind but they'll dilate your pupils and make you see colour and patterns very vividly like you've never seen before. The natives say they're good for connecting with nature's beauty, but I like to make a staurday night out of those and just stare at my toners for hours. I have a 1958 dollar I call "black magic" because the the fields have a black fractal pattern like some tribal tattoo and the black totem pole on the dollar starts coming alive with subdued hues of green and magenta. Can't look at it too long or it starts doing funny stuff to ya. I wouldn't sell it for 100 grand. There's not another toner out there that can do what that thing does to your eyes when you have it in hand.

    All these Morgans left the mint having the same look back in the 19th century, but the toning makes any coin unique. Masterpieces!

    I have 9 choice uncirculated Morgan Dollars that are in old American Savings & Loan Association holders. These were given to new customers as a promotional item during the 1950s and early 1960s. Every single one of these coins are incredibly and beautifully toned beyond your wildest imaginations and will most likely grade out anywhere from MS62 on the low end to MS65 on the high end. The coins are as follows: 1879 S REV 79 (2X), 1882 S, 1883, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1887 O and 1888.

    Hello Daniel. Do brick and mortar coin shops (i.e. ones like yours) need to specialize in certain areas to survive in these current times? Your shop seems to specialize in Morgan Dollars. Can a shop survive that tries to do a little bit of everything?

    I read somewhere that the tone color that cannot be duplicated in AT is called, "Seamist Green." Beautiful Coins! Tempting, yet at an auction they will go for too high for me.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a chemical reaction that can be predicted so I would say there’s any toning that can’t be duplicated.

    I'm a little ambivalent about toning on coins. I've seen and owned some very beautiful coins that were unique because of their environmental exposure that caused the toning. But, on the other hand it's objectively post mint damage. Superficial damage, to be fair, but it's from environmental exposure that modified the surface layer.
    The more serious problem occasionally is that artificial, or even just accelerated toning is sometimes done to distract from other possible defects, and nearly universally done on modern, high quality counterfeit coins to make them appear older. Any natural process that chemically alters the surface can be done artificially and when done skillfully is very hard to detect.
    But, all that said, I still believe that the two 1847 British Gothic crowns that I've owned with pinkish purplish toning are the most beautiful coins I've ever had.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did a video on this, it is post mint damage to the coin, but is beautiful on some coins and dies add value.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the reason for the question mark in the title.

      @@CoinHELPu I would disagree with you in terms of questioning it. First, the black star indicates that NGC has had 3 inspectors all agree (if one says no then the slab does not get the black star) that the coin has superior eye appeal. ONE PERCENT make it. Monster Toned coins is another level, but ALL OF THESE (with the exception of the first one shown) have magnificent appeal and as such, they offer something unique to morgan collectors. Monster Toned is just more of the same we saw but in the extreme and usually covers the entire coin front and back with very drastic rainbow patterns.
      I would say all of the NGC black star with the CAC stickers offer a ton of a premium on those coins. Especially if they have any rainbow toning on them. I have seen common date morgans, say 1883 P's in MS63 with the green CAC + the black star sell for $650. So, toning is definitely an acquired taste and personally I like ALL the variations the coins have to offer. I collect DMPL, frosted devices, black star toned and just plain blast white. I would agree with another commenter, that since the patterns are limitless and all offer something unique, they add excitement and another layer to collecting morgans. Otherwise, they would be boring if they all were the same. If the coin has any black or brown toning, that's were they are considered unattractive and you should stay away from those. ANY rainbow toning adds a great deal of value, especially those that have the black star.

  • @jimmycapps7263
    @jimmycapps7263 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If all Morgans were white i probably wouldn't have become a collector. Toning makes coins unique no matter how little. If they all look the same sounds a bit boring to me.
