I own #6. Beam me up Scotty. Toning possibly occurred in a fold of the canvas bank bag where it was not touching to create the lightly toned triangular toning. I remember the Roadrunner Collection well. Some incredible monster toners for sure. It does look like #5 toned up against the bank bag for many years and then a possible movement of the bag shifted another coin onto this one coin and covered it from toning anymore minus the small crescent area. That's where the crescent formed. That small portion of the coin was now exposed to and up against the bank bag and toned for an even longer time than the original color. Definite textile on that one. Beautiful eye appeal.
I see many high eye appeal coins at Legend auctions but damn they always seem to sell well above what I value the coins at. My favorite group of toners was the Northern Lights collection that sold I think 2 years ago
I like toned Morgans, but some people have lost their minds. The value of these coins is completely in the eye (and mind) of the beholder. Looks like some of the toning on #5 is of the textile variety. My guess is the coin was resting partly on the canvas bag and partly on another coin. This might explain the toning. Until some toning standards are established, I don't see how buyers could ever recoup their money except from another rich buyer. Good luck to them. Great topic and video quality!!
Totally agree with your comments. Pricing monster toned morgans is totally dependent on how crazy two bidders are. To sell these at those values, the stars need to align. I think buying at 1.5-2x PCGS value for a truly great toned coin is perhaps "safer" - but definitely not 15-100x.
You appreciate their beauty more when you realize how few true bag toned monsters exist. So many were dipped during the white crazed 80s 90s and early 00s

You can try making your own which is what I'm doing I have a Morgan I got for free in a partial envelope folded up and put up on my bookshelf

the 1879 s pattern is bag toneing i thinking maybe the bag got wet or to humid at some point. ya you dont see red orange like that often

Very nice, all's this shows you is ngc and pcgs, price guides have been and still are way outdated, they really are out of touch.
I've personally paid 61.85x times PCGS value for a monster toner (from the Roadrunner collection actually). I don't ever plan to sell.
I've paid many multiples of PCGS value myself, so I hear ya! Those are the coins that you can't stop lookin at.
