If you have a circulated Morgan or Peace dollar that you can hold in your hand, and know that it's authentic, you can hold it in your hand on a regular basis and get used to the weight of it. You'll be able to spot the light ones without any difficulty by simply picking them up and can thus dispense with using a scale. If it's the right weight or even heavier but is a fake, it will be considerably thicker than a real dollar. This is helpful if you're looking at a big lot of circulated dollars.
Thank you for a very helpful presentation. It's so easy, especially, to weigh a Morgan you've bought in order to weed out fakes. He also addresses other ways to tell -- the sates for instance.
Last week I threw out three nickels from my late grandfather's collection I thought to be counterfeit. By using your techniques and looking at how poor certain areas were struck, it was easy to see that the buffalos on them were actually missing one of their front legs! To think he had them since the late thirties and never knew.
A great deal of data exists for every Morgan ever minted. Reed edge counts are different for many of the Morgans so if it supposed to have significant Numismatic value, then counting those reed edges and looking up the recorded data and comparing is a good move.
Great video. Another thing I noticed on the fake were that the tips of the wings are considerably rounder than on the real coin. Also there’s something weird about the woman’s ear on the fake.
Reorganizing my Morgan's and Piece dollars for storage. I will test them and reweigh them also. If any are questionable I will do a specific gravity test.
Great extensive video. Thank you very much. I was checking 3 of these for my mom. And then on to be graded. After I weighed them. Wow. Foooed me. All of them were 22.grams. Then compared them to mine that were a solid 26. Grams. Thx.
Thanks for the info. I have a 1901 Morgan Silver dollar from your description it appears real, Mint 0. Is a bit worn. Thanks what is the next step in selling?
Good info.. was in Philippines and someone was trying to pass off a Morgan dollar 1888 and a 1862 US dollar to me. $50 each. They are way more than that
That was a great, informative video. I'm new at collecting and this video will probably save me a lot of money. Where can I buy a scale like you used in the video?
Thanks for the video, very informative. Especially in determining the authenticity of a Morgan by its weight in grams. Had no idea there were so many real looking Morgan fakes being sold online.
Great video. Very informative. What are the fake coins made of? I have a morgan that is clearly fake. If I cut it in half would I see that it was made of copper or brass? Thanks.
@@ModernMiner4 So I cut the coin in half. It was silver color throughout. Not sure that means anything or not. Aloe, I noticed that real and fake coins sound different when dropped on a table.

Great video. I just bought the scale, similar to that in the video, after watching. After weighing a Morgan dollar, it checked out well. I then established its weight after sealing it in an airtite capsule. So my 1903s weighs 26.0 and it was circulated, not magnetic, so would this be a real one 🙃 I bought it in middle school from a kid for a dollar he wanted a hill and I liked coins so I traded. Just curious if the weight could seem right? Probably gonna get appraised and see but just was wondering your thoughts about the weight.
I bought 6 Morgan Dollars from 1879, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1900 and 1921 and 17 Peace Dollars 1922-1926 here in Germany today in a pawn shop for a total price of €460, which is €20 each, which is €2.45 more than the spot i think the price is ok for all 23 coins 460€ equals 507$ and 20€ a piece equals 22$ what do you think about the price was it a bargain? how much do the coins cost at your pawn shop in the usa?
Hello, there is also such a product with which you can test your silver. You scratch a metal piece with your coin and you put a drop of that liquid on it. If the morgan is false, the product turns brown, if the product remains red, it is silver. You know what I mean. And you know where I can buy that and what this is called. Regards,Ed
I don't know if it's just me but at the beginning of the video 0:57 where you show the 2 coins I noticed that the last "A" in America on the real one you can clearly see the bar across the A but you can't really see it on the fake. Maybe that's just me and my eyesight or just the way you held them both but all the way through I was trying to see if it was just me and to me it's consistent all the way through the video. If I'm right do you think that could be another way to spot a fake?
Thank you I avoided buying Morgan's because I don't know that much about them. I just recently bought 3 I ping tested them and they pinged real but I've got a 1897 S that looks kind of wonky.
I purchased a Morgan Silver dollar off eBay recently, was described in "About Uncirculated," condition. However, it weighed 23 grams, which I couldn't believe. It was a fake, off eBay. I strongly suggest avoiding the site of uncertified Morgan dollars.
Other things to look for on fake morgans....fading/weak LIBERTY in the headband, weak/thin M (designer mark) on bottom of morgan bust (right above the date)....

For a coin in a 2x2, that can be tricky. However, the best way is to learn to identify them visually. Not all fake silver dollars are obvious to the eye, but many examples can be easily spotted. Try searching for silver dollars on eBay and picking out ones that look fake (or even ones that are sold as copies). Figure out why they look fake, and keep those factors in your mental toolbox. An example is that some will have brass color showing through the silver plating. Otherwise, if you're looking at a coin that is for sale, perhaps in a coin shop or at a coin show, ask to see it outside of the 2x2. If it helps them sell it, it would be ridiculous not to do it. I hope this helps, let me know if there's anything I can clarify.

the whole time you were saying "this brown color" I was sitting here looking at your GREEN coin LOL. anyway, great info and tips for spotting fakes. On yours another thing I noticed the date looks more like 19 01 than 1901 the spacing of the numbers looks just off. And it sure does look cast rather than struck. If counterfeiters ever figure out how to cast a 27g planchet then using a hammer, anvil or vice to stamp out their fakes we're screwed lol.
I just went through a horrible experience today from a shop think my price was switched bc he took it and disappeared on me for like 10 mns and I'm not stupid all he had to do was use the xrf or whatever
A Morgan dollar was discovered as genuine it was struck on aluminum. Unfortunately pcgs didn't list the coins weight but the aluminum Morgan should weigh less than silver.
The fake one has some black points on it, I saw in another video that this also comes from pouring the coin instead of real minting. Is that a true red flag indicator?
It definitely could be. While a real dollar may have similar issues (you never know where it's been), black spots like that are not typical. Poured coins can often be identified by their grainy surface texture, and by random pinholes on the surface.
I got a fake mixed in with a bunch of cull dollars. It had that brown or gray finish. Under glass it looked cast not struck. Then the acid test wouldn' t show red. My friend who has been in coin business for years passed on to me. He has no idea. I never did like the color on it. I finally got a acid tester and it doesn't test silver. weight on this one is a little heavy. Shows wear marks on breast but not wings. The the arrow heads that the eagle is holding are really messed up.
Tim you can get a free app called: Coin Facts. It shows pictures of coins, tells what they should weigh, how many were made, what some coins have sold for all kinds of stuff.
If you have a real Morgan dollar and others that are suspected fakes, the following may help. I had a good one (purchased 30+ years ago for $15) and three fakes (bought recently for $1 each). I mixed them up recently and could not figure out which was the real one. I wanted to weigh them but had no weighing machine. So, I put them one-at-a-time exactly at the end of a wooden ruler and then slid the ruler out over the edge of a book until the coin tipped the ruler down to my desk, noting the reading on the ruler's edge when that happened. The three fakes all tipped at one reading on the ruler's edge, the real one tipped much sooner because it was notably heavier. I found my real one!
Hi! You can weigh the coin, get a coin magnet and if the magnet sticks to the coin it is fake, put the coin on your finger and gently tap it with another coin & a real Morgan should have a nice high pitch ringing sound. Hope that helps.
@ Karen O’Neil Scales like the one shown in this video I’ve seen in tobacco shops (stores that sell cigarettes, pipes and other tobacco products) for less than $10 (without the recalibration weight). I ordered a AWS scale including a 500g calibration weight from Amazon for about $13-15. I’ve also seen them at gas stations/neighborhood stores. Hope you find one if you’re still looking. No, you should not clean it. That will hurt the value. The more original the better.
Thank you so mach ❤❤❤i have one 1890( 26.2 g)
I have one that my father had put away now I got to get a scale of wet
Seems like making a fake coin would cost to much
I have an 1896 double die reverse Morgan silver dollar I can’t seem to find anything on it anywhere
If a coin was made of 90% silver but was a rare year then how can you tell it was fake ??

The same factors in the video can apply. If it’s fake, the method of manufacture can give it away.
@@ModernMiner4 I have a free App on my phone : Coin Facts
It's very Interresting & can teach alot of cool facts.
Tim you can get a free app called:
Coin Facts. It shows pictures of coins, tells what they should weigh, how many were made, what some coins have sold for all kinds of stuff.
@@ModernMiner4 Hi ! Also if a coin sticks to a coin magnet it's fake.😙
Hello, I have One Silver Dollar 1887, but I don't know if is true. Can you help me? I From Brazil
Hi! You can weigh the coin, get a coin magnet and if the magnet sticks to the coin it is fake, put the coin on your finger and gently tap it with another coin & a real Morgan should have a nice high pitch ringing sound. Hope that helps.
TY that helps.
Good informational video 😊
No mention of the ping test or magnet test. But good vid.
Really wow you do this to everyone
Good stuff, thanks for sharing!
Which scale do you recommend? That is something I haven't invested in yet.
Karen Oneil
There are many different brands you can find, but the one I use is American Weigh Scale (AWS). Mine graduates at 0.1 grams.
@@ModernMiner4 Would the magnet slide work with these?
Karen Oneil
Possibly. Some metals, such as copper, will react very similarly to silver, so it takes practice

Scales like the one shown in this video I’ve seen in tobacco shops (stores that sell cigarettes, pipes and other tobacco products) for less than $10 (without the recalibration weight). I ordered a AWS scale including a 500g calibration weight from Amazon for about $13-15.
I’ve also seen them at gas stations/neighborhood stores. Hope you find one if you’re still looking. They come in handy when it comes to checking questionable coins. 😉
Thank you.👍
How much does it cost to subscribe?
Thank you.
