Two years ago my wife and I visited the Great Buddha of Kamakura and some Japanese school girls asked to take their pictures with us. We tried to communicate but the conversation ended up in giggles. Long story short I found out that one of the girls spoke Portuguese her family lived in Sao Paulo Brazil which I hear has the biggest Japanese population after Japan. I speak Portuguese so from then on we're able to have a wonderful conversation and she ended up being the translator for her group:-) BTW love your channel.
I lived in Kyoto for several years and I loved it, but I absolutely hated that street because it was so unbelievably crowded all the time and a major tourist trap full of mostly junk (not三年坂, but the first street lol) The back route is much more interesting and less crowded. I'm also pretty sure Kiyo is under construction right now, so not really worth going to unfortuatenly at this point, but if you ever get the chance, the Kiyomizu light up's at night are amazing, especially in fall. I would definitely recommend making the trek for that purpose, but only that purpose haha. I also remember giving my students that assignment to go interview foreigners on their summer trips, I still feel bad about it haha. Also, for those interested in telling the difference between real Maiko and Tourists: (1) Look at the geta. Generally real Maiko in full attire wear Okobo, really tall geta with the front slanted inward, but foreigners and tourists often won't because they can't walk in them; (2) If you look close generally you can often see the wig lines on tourists, but Maiko use their real hair; (3) if the kimono collar is full of all sorts of flashy colors, likely a tourist. Maiko usually have creamy white, red, or sometimes gold collars; (4) real Maiko rarely stop for photos and almost never have an escort following them or carrying their bags; (6) if the kanzashi (hair ornament) does not match the season, it is a tourist; (7) Maiko are usually young, and only usually until about age 18-20, thus older looking Maiko are probably fake; (8) Maiko generally do not tie up their kimono to make it easier to walk because they are trained how to walk gracefully with it down, so if the kimono is tied high up so it is easier to walk, probably a tourist, and (9) if it is before dinner time, chances are extremely high they are a tourist because most Maiko get ready in their okiya during the afternoon and depart for their appointments in the early evening, thus you almost never see a Maiko in full regalia in the afternoon or morning.
This video made me smile so much, seeing how excited those students were to see a foreigner. Japan is such a beautiful place and the people are just so so sweet
Making this go channel was a great move. These kind of videos give the people who haven't had a chance to visit Japan the cultural vibe the country, people, and buildings give! I'll donate when i can and keep these great streams coming!
I found your interaction with the young people just refreshing and so natural. You have a real talent for engaging others. You made their day. My day was made by watching you interact with them. The world could learn a thing or two from you and those kids.
Your vlogs I started watching just few days back and I have actually stopped watching very popular vloggers like Casey and others and have started to love the way you are totally natural, spontaneous, candid at times and beautifully tell these stories with hints from a sociological perspective. Big respect and a huge fan already! Everybody should watch your vlogs.. They're beautifully made! Would like to watch a bicycle tour vlog of japan one day! Never stop vlogging about this beautiful country!
Fantastic stream from Kyoto! Loved the traditional old town look and charm of the area, your advice to tourists and the cutest was helping the students practice their English with you! Now you did all that and had a business meeting, a great day out I say!
mojabaka I heard that it's extremely difficult to be allowed to reside in Japan, there's a very small number of people permitted to stay, they want to stay Japanese unlike other countries opening the flood gates of immigration.
I love when he just talks to the locals (or not quite, since those students were from Gifu). I find it really cool and interesting that he's molded into society so well and people are usually very nice and friendly, although quiet and shy a lot of the time too.
I visited Kyoto in 2000. Your tour reminded of many fascinating experiences that came my way. I could go back there tomorrow, but so many other places to visit are on my travel lists. Consequently, I will enjoy your video and commentary. But remember, you are adding to the crowdedness on the streets. The shopkeepers need the business, too.
Your ability to write in English is very good then assuming you didn't use google translate. Were you on a school field trip then and did you enjoy Kyoto?
I was lucky enough to visit Japan a few years ago and the same thing happened to me. At least 2 or 3 different school children came up asking questions for a school lesson, what was your favourite food, where were we from that sort of thing. Their were always very polite and their English was very good.
So thankful for this video! I saw this video three years ago, before my trip to Japan. Thanks to you I knew about the Starbucks shop there. I know, Starbucks is not authentic of course. But this shop was so beautiful! Just watching the video again because I miss it so much. Brings me joy ❤️
Hey John thanks for showing Kyoto and all those wonderful people and it is nice to see student ask you question while streaming that actually made it more fun. Anyway I only went to Tokyo, Yokohama and Niko Edomura.
I got so happy when I saw that road going up to Kiyomizu Dera and saw the place that I got strawberry ice cream from, brought back so many memories from my trip to Japan!
Thank you for the video, but as far as I remember there is always an Ekiben festival in Tokyo - can you make a video about that event too? Thank you your work!
I am from Taiwan I can not hear ~ is a hearing impaired I like Japan I love Japan I was born in Taiwan - more and more disgrace The next life was born in Japan I try to make money slowly save money ~ will go to Japan to play
Don't worry John. I'm constantly tourist info center too. I work in Waikiki beach and it's fascinating that word seems to spread like wild fire that I can speak Japanese. Japanese tourists pop in, ignore all the other workers and walk straight up to me to ask for directions, recommendations, and what not. Haha they love snapping my photo cause the chunky nerdy Hawaiian lady speaks their language😂 I sell touristy T shirts.... haha I don't even work for an info booth.
It reminds me so much things... and to think that I was there, in these alleys last summer... so unrealistic. I want to go back to Japan so hard. I was only one day and a half in Kyoto it was really too short to see all the beautiful things of this city and I really love the traditionnal part of Japan.
I just like your smile . I have been there and Japan is beautiful, peacefull with respectfull people everywhere you go. I have no fear touring JAPAN because people are very helfull too. It has some nice and beautiful tourist sites. You enjoy your stay
I was there last week, didn't know about those stairway shops, I was lost in the middle of huge cemetery complex, but the cemetery there was so amazing!
It's almost creepy but adorable how people are asking for picture takings xD. Also thanks for taking the effort to make these videos John! This is good reference material for Asian architecture for 3d environmental work I might use for inspiration after my other projects are done.
I was just in Kyoto two weeks ago and was on this very street....Kyoto was absolutely amazing. While it is stunningly crowded with tourists......literally thousands.....it is an amazing place....
OUCH! I didn't know about this area until I watched this, John. Other than the oldest geisha teahouse in Gion, the shrine and the bamboo grove, the old architecture...I certainly wouldn't have missed that "period" Starbucks for the world!
Hope to see more of this vid... love the random interactions.. ^_^ looking forward to ur next vid. Tnx of sharing ur journey in Japan.. I just love Japan. 😍😍😍❤❤❤
Your videos are so much better than travel channels on TV because you always tell it like it is 👍🏼 And I'm very impressed with your Japanese, so fluent. Where did you learn it?
What a lovely video. It’s really nice. I’m from Yokohama but I have been there for school trip when I was 15 yo. Kyoto has completely different atmosphere from Yokohama or Tokyo. I also asked tourists who were from Australia to take a photo with me when I was walking there like these boys and girls. Every tourist was kind even if I spoke terrible English. We all Japanese are looking forward to seeing everyone from overseas at Tokyo Olympic season. I’m studying abroad in Australia though:)
Wow ,John ,Your Presence itself brings a lot of Happyness .Thanks a lot . Yeah , You are almost a celebrity . I kinda envy those high school girls, I wish I could have a photo with John as well ^.^
Dude, you are great at live streams... I love the serendipity; the unexpected.

LOL.... John, you're a rock star!!!!
I don't know where you're from or how you got to Japan, but your videos are quaint and frankly refreshing.
Thanks...
mojabaka I heard that it's extremely difficult to be allowed to reside in Japan, there's a very small number of people permitted to stay, they want to stay Japanese unlike other countries opening the flood gates of immigration.
We just saw My Neighbor Totoro. There is a Studio Ghibli Film Festival this summer in the US theaters. You can see it either dubbed or subtitled.
You're so awesome, taking pics with them. Great video thanks for sharing.
I love when he just talks to the locals (or not quite, since those students were from Gifu). I find it really cool and interesting that he's molded into society so well and people are usually very nice and friendly, although quiet and shy a lot of the time too.
I remember walking on this to get to Kiyomizudera temple earlier this month. :)
I really enjoy your happy personality. It makes for a very fun video that could otherwise be quite dull.
Hey John, we can see much more smiles in Kyoto!! Congrets for the video!
LMAO the students chasing you at the end really cracked me up. so sweet of them and the guy asking questions with the note book. =)))
These high school students are cute as hell. xD
Thank you for reminding me about tanabata! Indeed it is that season already! I better make my wishes ^o^

So those kids doing their school assignment. Interview the foreigner.
Yes, if you walk around in East and Southeast Asia then you will meet often kids who have to interview you in English as school assignment.
I don't envy that kid. An assignment like that would be way out of my comfort zone.
Was there a continuation of this post? I love your interaction with the teens...
wow you have 2nd channel john, nice to know! subbed!
and thanks for the video :)
I love the intricate and meticulous designs on the facades. What do you like most when you visit Kyoto? Or a must do?
Don't worry John. I'm constantly tourist info center too. I work in Waikiki beach and it's fascinating that word seems to spread like wild fire that I can speak Japanese.
