It's almost a steal how cheap the foods are! Guy is maintaining what effectively is a museum AND a tourist attraction, I feel he really deserves more compensation for it!
The owner should start an online donation for his/their search for spare parts and maintenance of the old vending machines as it is in all our interest and all our benefit.
It's not expensive, but it doesn't seem cheap to me, the hamburger in the video costs 280 yen here in Europe, most places like McDonald's sell it for 0.99€ 😂

I'm sorry to hear that you were deprived. It got REALLY bad- to the point where I was giving A/V advice in the comment section, the next video would fix some issues by the same person, and then they would just contract out another amateur gig worker. I even liked that Eastern European gal that was a host for awhile, but they just got rid of everyone.

Saw these vending machines in a lot of videos and heard a lot of popular youtubers complaining about some machine being offline, but you are the first to show the inner workings of it. Now we know the hard work that goes into maintaining them and why they need to be offline at times.
Anyone who complains has no idea why they’re here and the work that goes into maintaining it. I hope this video can shed light into what makes this more special than just a vending machine 😉 it’s one man’s passion run with a lot of hard work.

Don't know if it would be as interesting for everyone, but the company/companies supplying all the food for all these vending machines would make, at least, a nice follow up video. The amount of effort Japan does to keeping these going from Saito-san maintaining these to the finding companies to supply the food is just astounding.
This place should be protected since its part of japanese history when they where at the peak of innovation, only in japan you rock youre the only youtube creator who has managed to get an interview, explanation and behind the scenes from that place and still keep it educational and entertaining, hope you keep these videos going and show the real and nostalgic feelings of japan for more years to come

I think the story is Saito-san more than the machines. They’re a product of his love, passion and dedication - because when I hear his side, it changes the way to look at the vending machine. It did for me :)

If Saito-san didn't have this drive and passion for resurrecting these vending machines, none of it would exist so I home more people have a greater appreciation for what he's built and visit to support his effort to keep the past alive in these machines for us to experience. It's almost incomprehensible how much work it must require to keep all of the different foods stocked, and fresh in so many machines! Not to mention keeping all these arcane mechanisms working. I truly hope he sees enough business to sell through most of his food and keep the site alive for years to come. This is really a marvel I'll need to see for myself if I ever make it back to Japan
THAT is AMAZING. I absolutely love that these aren't just sitting in a museum in a non-functional state but still preserved in a way they were meant to be used in their original release. It is so awesome to see machines with technology that pre-date microchips. This is the type of project that deserves extra funding from government or some charitable organization for preserving a piece of history. Respect to the owner for this accomplishment. John, I cannot tell you this enough times: this show is so good and upsettingly wholesome. Coca-Cola in a glass bottle is God tier. I share the sentiments with Saito-san that restoring old things and bringing them back to life is a holy act. I could sense the Kami emanating from the machines just looking at them on this video.
Great topic! A frequent Japan visitor over 40 years I couldn’t figure out why these machines were disappearing. Now I know, it’s the the rise of convenience stores! My first vending machine purchase years ago, based entirely on product name: Polcari Sweat.
It's our 3rd or 4th video together, first one for Scotty on this new one. He was on GO! live streaming a couple of time and I took him around Akihabara before the pandemic but we will be at it again. .
This was great, this is the first time I've ever seen a real behind-the-scenes of how these work. I loved all of it. I kinda understand how he feels about vending machines cause I'm obsessed with pinball. I love the mechanical sounds and moving parts. Nothing quite like it.
I've seen a few other youtubers go to this place to show what stuff could be found in it and it always felt fascinating since the machines are old and there are even items in them that were also available from many years ago. Seeing this video of yours and hearing why the owner made this place a thing made it much more amazing. I do hope it last for a long time and they get more machines as time passes. It really is like a museum but unlike most museums where you can just look, here you can experience using the machines as well. Wish i could go to Japan to see this myself someday.

Saito-san couldn't put it into words, but I think I can: these vending machines are the intersection of human history, innovation, industry, endeavor, and love. They nourish and sustain the customers and businesses that support them, and they are a window into human ingenuity and engineering, not just now but spanning decades. It's like looking through grandma's kitchen and grandpa's garage, seeing the gadgets and recipes they used to bless the family and build society over so many years, and they are STILL going! They really are remarkable, as is the collection. I hope someone else will take over after he retires, because this place is just, plain, cool.

The thing that astonished me is that many of the food machines requiring fresh deliveries still have companies around servicing owners of their machines with refills, we wouldn't have that in other places. That and the curry rice machine that's the last one of its kind in operation is something that should be of note for visitors visiting there.
I asked about that. There’s a company in Ebina (Kanagawa, same prefecture) that provides him with it but it’s a special order, business relationship just to keep the machines going. It’s not just Saito-san. His passion fuels it though. There are a lot of players who don’t want to see them die out and THAT is a good story.

This is something as someone who has an interest ( and a job ) in electronics repair on one side and now game dev ( tech artistry ) on the other, learning how things operate and then using that information to repair other of the same thing is really interesting to learn about. You almost become a surgeon in a way, especially with larger machines like the ones at this lot, that require such care and attention to both what you know and how you do it, that you really do need that passion for it. Plus it helps while your working on ones that you can step to the left of you for a meal in-between, especially if your spending quite a few hours repairing one.

I love the way you saw this, so true. I think one of the great thing about Japan’s too heavy demographics is the way the country can both accelerate the gas on progress and also spam the breaks and look back too. The concept of MOTTAINAI is strong and one of my favorites. Don’t be wasteful. If it still works, it can still be useful. Don’t take more than you need. These machines still work well and serve its purpose and we remember that with places like this. (I’m not getting that VR headset 😂 … yet)

Not only is he providing a wonderful service for his customers and people passing by, but this has become a well known tourist attraction, and DOZENS if not hundreds of TH-camrs and influencers have posted videos from here, so it has become known worldwide as a tourist attraction. This place is probably CRAWLING with people 7 days a week and i salute this man for his ingenuity.

One of things that I love about these machines is that u can learn a lot of history from it: from machine itself, food/item that is made and ingredients/parts that are used to create them...especially if we are talking about food...u could probably find place (if is in Japan) where from ingredients are coming, maybe visit and have chance to talk to owner...like John did before....really really like this type of stories/content. This curry rice vending machine is totally amazing! The way it opens the bag blew my mind. So simple yet so effective :3 Actually I think that because those machines are on the 'analog' side of technology, it's even remotely possible to keep them alive. If it would be all about electronics, then it wouldn't be so "easy" to maintain. I dare to say it would be impossible for someone not affiliated with big companies.

They're almost all gone - sad. They can't get the parts, too costly to maintain and the food also has changed. Companies don't make it anymore, has to be done yourself. But it'll never go away as long as Saito-san and others with that dedication remain with an eye on the past nostalgia, which we love to live in as well. Thanks UFO Bob for watching!

Amazing! Love it! We didn't have that many vending machines in Finland growing up (nor do we today) but my local swim hall had a weird American french fries machine, that actually deep fried the suckers while you waited. You could smell the oil :D They were not amazing, but the machine was like from another world and magic.

After the long period of closed borders, I've finally made my solo trip to Japan in spring and it was the most amazing thing I've ever done. Japan is pure heaven for tech nerds like me, I've spent countless hours in Akihabara and Den-Den Town. Big thanks to Scotty and John for introducing me to all this!

It's our 3rd or 4th video together, first one for Scotty on this new one. He was on GO! live streaming a couple of time and I took him around Akihabara before the pandemic but we will be at it again. .
This was great, this is the first time I've ever seen a real behind-the-scenes of how these work. I loved all of it. I kinda understand how he feels about vending machines cause I'm obsessed with pinball. I love the mechanical sounds and moving parts. Nothing quite like it.
I've seen a few other youtubers go to this place to show what stuff could be found in it and it always felt fascinating since the machines are old and there are even items in them that were also available from many years ago. Seeing this video of yours and hearing why the owner made this place a thing made it much more amazing. I do hope it last for a long time and they get more machines as time passes. It really is like a museum but unlike most museums where you can just look, here you can experience using the machines as well. Wish i could go to Japan to see this myself someday.

Saito-san couldn't put it into words, but I think I can: these vending machines are the intersection of human history, innovation, industry, endeavor, and love.
They nourish and sustain the customers and businesses that support them, and they are a window into human ingenuity and engineering, not just now but spanning decades.
It's like looking through grandma's kitchen and grandpa's garage, seeing the gadgets and recipes they used to bless the family and build society over so many years, and they are STILL going!
They really are remarkable, as is the collection. I hope someone else will take over after he retires, because this place is just, plain, cool.

The thing that astonished me is that many of the food machines requiring fresh deliveries still have companies around servicing owners of their machines with refills, we wouldn't have that in other places. That and the curry rice machine that's the last one of its kind in operation is something that should be of note for visitors visiting there.
I asked about that. There’s a company in Ebina (Kanagawa, same prefecture) that provides him with it but it’s a special order, business relationship just to keep the machines going. It’s not just Saito-san. His passion fuels it though. There are a lot of players who don’t want to see them die out and THAT is a good story.
I love the flash back to the vending machine restaurant you visited, it was one of the first videos I watched of yours and I’ve been hooked and following your content ever since! This is something as someone who has an interest ( and a job ) in electronics repair on one side and now game dev ( tech artistry ) on the other, learning how things operate and then using that information to repair other of the same thing is really interesting to learn about. You almost become a surgeon in a way, especially with larger machines like the ones at this lot, that require such care and attention to both what you know and how you do it, that you really do need that passion for it.
Plus it helps while your working on ones that you can step to the left of you for a meal in-between, especially if your spending quite a few hours repairing one.
Just amazing ,and Saitosan is a genius and national treasure. I'd seriously want to go there and spend a few days eating from these machines all day long. Thanks John for showing...

I love the way you saw this, so true. I think one of the great thing about Japan’s too heavy demographics is the way the country can both accelerate the gas on progress and also spam the breaks and look back too. The concept of MOTTAINAI is strong and one of my favorites. Don’t be wasteful. If it still works, it can still be useful. Don’t take more than you need. These machines still work well and serve its purpose and we remember that with places like this. (I’m not getting that VR headset 😂 … yet)

Amazing to see the complex mechanics & electronics running the processes of these old vending machines.
Not only is he providing a wonderful service for his customers and people passing by, but this has become a well known tourist attraction, and DOZENS if not hundreds of TH-camrs and influencers have posted videos from here, so it has become known worldwide as a tourist attraction. This place is probably CRAWLING with people 7 days a week and i salute this man for his ingenuity.

It's fascinating to see how some of those machines work, and I love his passion.
One of things that I love about these machines is that u can learn a lot of history from it: from machine itself, food/item that is made and ingredients/parts that are used to create them...especially if we are talking about food...u could probably find place (if is in Japan) where from ingredients are coming, maybe visit and have chance to talk to owner...like John did before....really really like this type of stories/content. Owner brought big smile on my face

Actually I think that because those machines are on the 'analog' side of technology, it's even remotely possible to keep them alive. If it would be all about electronics, then it wouldn't be so "easy" to maintain. I dare to say it would be impossible for someone not affiliated with big companies.

So glad you decided to show how these vending machines work and the history. I have seen a lot of videos just showing TH-camrs purchasing and eating the food.
Those classic vending machine are so cool. I remember seeing many of those when I visited Japan 🇯🇵 in the mid-90s.
They're almost all gone - sad. They can't get the parts, too costly to maintain and the food also has changed. Companies don't make it anymore, has to be done yourself. But it'll never go away as long as Saito-san and others with that dedication remain with an eye on the past nostalgia, which we love to live in as well. Thanks UFO Bob for watching!

Amazing! Love it! We didn't have that many vending machines in Finland growing up (nor do we today) but my local swim hall had a weird American french fries machine, that actually deep fried the suckers while you waited. You could smell the oil :D They were not amazing, but the machine was like from another world and magic.

The live stream you did some years ago with Scotty in Akihabara brought me to your channel and started my love for Japan. After the long period of closed borders, I've finally made my solo trip to Japan in spring and it was the most amazing thing I've ever done. Japan is pure heaven for tech nerds like me, I've spent countless hours in Akihabara and Den-Den Town. Big thanks to Scotty and John for introducing me to all this!
I still remember that one of your first videos (I think the 2nd one) on the old channel is vending machines and this collab with Scotty is the next level for it, kind of like how Japanology Plus is a more advanced Begin Japanology.
