  • The last thing any team wants to do prior to the Super Bowl is create a self-inflicted distraction for themselves. Well, at Super Bowl XXIV, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen did just that when he made some comments about San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice that were deemed so bad, so insensitive, and so offensive, that organizations across the country voiced their complaints, and were unified in calling Bowlen a racist. This is the story behind Super Bowl XXIV, and the somewhat forgotten drama from before the game

    Firstly, Pat Bowlen was a great owner & yes very generous throughout his life to the needy & for many causes. Also was good to his players & former players. Which makes this comment seem so out of character. I don't doubt he meant no harm. Good for him to stay in front of it & apologize & offer to go the extra steps to help make up for it. Lastly the joke was terrible. His team was lucky Rice didn't get fired up and have a good game.

    Last game of the 1989 season, and it was fitting that the 49ers orchestrated a masterclass thrashing on the Broncos, to officially put their stamp on the decade as the league's best team. SB24 wasn't really a contest, more so a coronation for San Francisco. Remarkable what Bill Walsh, Eddie Debartolo, all the players, and all the coaches were able to accomplish during that period.

    • @inwalters
      @inwalters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Coogan Check my math, but I have it that Jerry from '86 to '95 averaged 14 TDs a year, the same as for Sterling his last three years, after Farve joined the team. To be a great WR, you need a great QB to throw to you and Green Bay didn't have that till'92. So again, as I said, if Sterling could have played with Farve another 15 seasons, who knows?

Wisconsin is third in US behind California and Minnesota for Asian immigrants. 4.19% of Green Bay was Asian American in last census. Which would be roughly more than 4500. • @dentonyoung4314
      @dentonyoung4314 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, the GOAT is without a doubt Otto Graham. They didn't have "Super Bowls" in Graham's day, they had "championship games", and for a number of reasons careers were shorter, so Otto only played 10 years. He was a starter from day 1. In 10 years, his team made the championship game 10 times and won 7. (Try to imagine some rookie from this year's class, let's say Kenny Pickett, being a starter virtually from day 1, having a 10 year career all for the same team, playing in 10 Super Bowls as a starting QB and winning 7 of them.)
      Oh, and did I mention players played both ways in Graham's era? As a rookie, he found himself down 9-7 late in the 4th quarter of the championship game. With under 5 minutes left, he threw a TD pass to go ahead 14-9. Then, playing free safety, he got the game-clinching interception with under a minute left, plucking an Ace Parker pass out of the air to stop a drive that had reached the +30. (So, picture Kenny Pickett playing starting QB and starting FS, throwing the go-ahead TD pass late in the game and then intercepting an Aaron Rodgers throw in the final minute to stop the potential game-winning drive.)
      But if we restrict it to only the Super Bowl era, you can make a good case for Montana as the GOAT.

    The 49ers management sent promotions to sports departments of newspapers all around the nation which were 5-foot-tall parody Rice A Roni boxes called "Rice and Ronnie, the San Francisco Treat." (I worked in a newspaper sports room and saw one of these; they were clever as hell). This was a play on Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott. There are plenty of ways to make a joke about Jerry's Rice's last name without being a clod.
    What many people don't realize about the "c-man" term is that it is as bad as the n-word. Racists in the day used them in tandem to vent hate and white supremacist feelings. Imagine someone calling Jerry Rice "that n----- receiver." No one would have a problem understanding why that was unacceptable.
