- In a 1990 game between the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills, the Bills went from 21-9 down to 29-21 up, all in a matter of 77 seconds (five plays from scrimmage). This is the story of one of the craziest stretches of all-time

1990 was just a magical year of NFL football and the Bills' season was one of the most incredible parts.

Yet again the NFC South has been a contender the last few years. But it was not till this year that they were able to have a champ, AND they have been called the Yuckaneers and the Suckaneers. No matter the faithful have been there since the beginning. GO BUCS.
Absolutely incredible. The only worse stretch I can remember during a game was the "Butt Fumble" game where, if memory serves, NE scored 3 TD's (including the Butt Fumble) in 51 seconds.
But (a) that was in the second quarter, not the fourth, and (b) NE was up by 11 when the sequence started, not down by 12. So this sequence was much more significant.

I was actually scared at that game that the place would collapse. When Elway fumbled, I ended up 3 rows down with people on top of me. I looked up and the upper deck was swaying like I couldn't believe. I really thought it would collapse on top of us. As I left the game, I saw a huge crack in the tunnel concrete that wasn't there before then. It was fixed the next game I went to. My buddy I went to the game with said the same thing, he thought it would collapse also. No earthquake could be more frightening until the actual collapse. It was an unforgettable memory.
I remember going to a concert at RFK stadium back in back in the early 2000's and from all the people jumping in unison with the music it felt like the entire upper deck of the stadium was moving. It was kinda scary. I've experienced a minor earthquake before and the feeling was very similar.
I was at this game with my family and my dad said “if the Broncos make this FG, let’s head out to the car so we can get an early start on beating the traffic.”

I just turned 14 and this was the first Bills game I ever went to. I remember an usher being pulled into the crowd and riding the crowd after the 3rd score. That game is such a great memory from my childhood.

And this is why, in the AFC championship game a season later (after the crowd noise rule was repealed), we were all chanting "No Way Elway" everytime they were on offense. It was apocalyptically loud.
My Dad and I were at that game. I was 11. I hadn't really watched that game. During a quiet moment I asked the guy next to us what it was all about. He explained it all. Every time Denver had the ball there was 11 yr old me screaming at the top of my lungs "No Way Elway"
@@Loukious I was 8, doing the same. In the endzone opposite where people held up the sign of "No way Elway".
Only other memory I had were the two guys in front of us calling me 'coach' because I was calling out the plays the offenses were running before the snap. Oh and the guy in my section everyone called an asshole because he held up a sign that said "The Browns will be here next year." lol. Go Bills.

Josh looks like a serious win but Trubisky backing him up puts them one injury away from going 8-8 like last year's Bears. And I don't think 8-8 takes the division. It might not make the playoffs.

Love the videos! You should try one with the AFC Chanpionship Colts Steelers. Late in the 4th quarter, Willie Williams came up big on 3rd down. Then Ernie Mills makes a catch ( that wouldn't be a catch today) and then the famous ending with the almost hail mary
Back then, “artificial turf” was nothing more than green carpet on concrete. Kubiak was running and fell forward from a lack of athletic prowess. The turf monster had a way of grabbing your feet.

I don't know if you just do NFL games but you might want to do a deep dive in the greatest game no one saw and that was a USFL game between the L.A. Express and the Houston Gamblers in week 1 of the 1985 season. Steve Young was the QB for the Express and Jim Kelly was the QB for Houston. Kelly threw for 574 yards and 5 TD's in a 34-33 comeback win. The game is on TH-cam if you want to watch it.

I was at that game in the end zone where all the scores were. Up until that time we had seem very little action. Ended up being one of them most exciting sporting events I ever saw
So was I. My seats were on the aisle on the right if facing the tunnel. The feeling of resignation to a loss being swept away in a little over a minute was amazing.

This pretty much sent these two teams in opposite directions. By season’s end, the Bills were neck-and-neck with the 49ers and Giants as the league’s best teams, while the Broncos were 5-11. Denver would be back in the playoffs the next season, winning the AFC West and falling to the Bills in a tight defensive struggle of an AFC Championship game.
Nah, Bills had been on the climb last 3 seasons, Denver was sort of starting over, Bobby Humphery's departure would hurt them; the fact that the AFC didnt have as many strong teams allowed Denver back to the afc championship next season and even then, Elway was injured.
Fast forward to 5:20. Holy cow talk about ‘get to the point’ already
Kubiak must have been getting old, that failed tackle was his upper body going faster than his lower body which happened to me the first time at age 29. You just get slower as you get older and you need to face plant to realize it when you sprint.
It was painful to be a Bronco fan in the 70s and 80s, only thing worse would be being a Bills or Lions fan in any decade.

I was in college at the time in Greeley, Colorado. In fact, it was the same dorm the Broncos stayed in when they were there for training csmp. I was watching the game in the TV lounge when some other people watching wanted the Broncos to go for it on the 4th down play where the field goal was blocked. I pointed out it would put them up by three scores, but they thought I, and Dan Reeves, were being overly conservative. 🤦♂️

I was up in Boulder that morning and was listening to game on the radio while driving back to Denver. Got back to my apartment in time for the 4th quarter. Sat down in front of my couch with the Sunday paper to watch the end of what I thought would be a Broncos victory. Dumbfounded by the first two crazy scores, but on the Elway fumble, I punched into the newspaper out of frustration which happened to be on the floor. I bruised my hand so badly that it felt broken. I was feeling that pain for weeks. Bad memory.
It was a pass the torch kinda game Denver was the AFC team of the 80's and the Buffalo was the team of the 90's.

My grandpa was at the Denver Broncos vs Bills game.
I was at this Bills game, and still, in my opinion, was the loudest I've ever heard that stadium in my life, in all the years of going to Bills games. My heart, the bones in my chest, rattled, vibrated. I've never felt that before or since. Now, to be honest, it might've happened at the Bills Comeback game vs the Oilers. But since I was an Oilers fan, I left the stadium when it was 35-10 after the Bills recovered the Onside Kick, knowing damn well my Oilers were about to blow another lead.
Now, I'm not a Bills fan. My Dad is, he had Season Tickets, so I went to almost all the games. The funny thing about this game was the Bills had 3 straight home comebacks that year. And I was there for all three of them. The Jets, The Broncos & the Raiders on Sunday Night.
Still, nothing replaces the time I was at the Jets-Bills Game in 1988, I was 10 years old. The Bills won to win the AFC East Division Title and the fans stormed the field & took down the Goal Posts. That hasn't happened since.
When you mentioned the 3 possession games where the team that was behind in the 4th quarter and came back, I was live for 2 of them. The first was in 1985 when the Eagles had a 23-0 lead on the Vikings, in Philly, with about 9 minutes left. The Vikings went on to win 28-23. The 2nd was the Cardinals/Bucs game mentioned. 28-3 in the 4th quarter and the Cards won 31-28.
When he mentioned it I expected it to be all oilers blowing leads 🤣

It didn't. It ended 29-28. Ricky Nattiel scored on a short pass from Elway in garbage time. He didn't show it in the vid because it didn't pertain to the 77-seconds theme.

Idea for a video. Maybe you can talk about how due to the nutty setup of the NFL schedule back then, John Elway and Dan Marino, both taken in the 1983 draft, and both having played for an AFC team for 17 years together only faced each other three times, two of those times coming at the tail end of the 1998 season. The other in 1985. Same thing with Jim Kelly never playing the Chargers.

That's the problem with uneven divisions in each conference. Then as now, the schedule is a formula. You play a set number of opponents, the rest are determined by where you ended in your division. The Bills never played Seattle in Buffalo until 1995. And you're right about the Bills and Chargers. They played twice in 1985, then not again until 1998. In that same time period, the Bills played the Raiders 7 times in the regular season.
It wasn't uneven divisions as much as an uneven *number* of divisions, so you couldn't have AFC East vs AFC West or whatever like you've had since 2002, which is why the four non-division matchups were always "standings" games, and Elway and Marino always kept missing each other cause one would finish and one second or whatever, but never in the same place.
With 14 teams in each conference, you'd have had to have two three-team divisions in each. Nothing says B-level indoor league more than that

The first time Tampa Bay came to play in Buffalo was 2009. 32 years as a team before the Buccaneers visited Buffalo.
Unbelievable stuff by the pro football history master- You are the NFLs version of Peter Gammons. I remember those 77 seconds, it was a crazy year in Buffalo all around. I remember the Bills being down to Chicago 6-0 late in the 2nd qtr and then the Bills got hot and won 35-6. They scored points in bunches that year. Arguably the greatest play in NFL history happened in Buffalo in 1990, Bills v Eagles. Cunningham in his own end zone ducks Bruce Smith. He’s deep in his own end zone and chucks a pass up to Fred Barnett for a TD, Cunningham probably threw the ball 75 yards back against his body on the greatest athletic play by a QB I’ve ever seen.... The Broncos had a rash of injuries in 1990, it really was a lost season. From 1989 to 1991, Elway and the offense struggled while the defense carried the team. The 1991 Broncos defense was very very good. They go into Buffalo for the AFC title game, no John Elway and hold the mighty Bills to only 10 points and still lost; ironically a SB worthy defense was held back by a less than pedestrian offense in 1991, a far cry from the great offenses of the late 90s. The 91 AFC title game marked a day when the Bills lost a bit of their mojo and never got it back before a SB blowout to the Redskins

With a chance to take a 3 possession lead, a blocked fg attempt and defensive touchdown cuts Denver's lead to only 7 points. Down 21-9, my math tells me the td cut the lead to 6 points, then down to 5 points after the PAT
