You nailed it Liz! Great info on driving in the wind in a high profile rig. I’m a retired truck driver and you hit on all the things I always looked for and paid attention to to let me know if, and how hard the wind is blowing on the road. Like trucks ahead of you doing a quick move left or right, flags, trees, bushes, showing movement, etc. I too have my favorite wind apps and monitor the wind charts along my route before I set out. I’ve left places early or stayed longer in areas to avoid driving on a windy day. Thanks again for getting the word out to the RVers that throw caution to the wind. Hehe 😉
Thank you Liz. As a soon-to-be solo female traveler, your tips videos are so informative and helpful. I will be watching them a few times over! Thank you!
I’ve been in a Camper & truck, Class A, Class C, and truck w/ 5th wheel. By far, I feel the safest in the truck and 5th wheel. You gave really good information Liz.
As soon as I read the title, my first thought was the Columbia Gorge. We have made that drive many times, and as many have commented, the high winds are not to be taken lightly. One family reunion was at Maryhill State Park Campground, right along I-84. Not only did we have to stake everything down at our campsites, but awnings and anything loose on RVs traveling on I-84 were being ripped off and flapping in the wind as they drove past the campground. We saw it during our four day stay. In fact, while are at the full sized Stonehenge replica, the wind knocked my then 10 years old son's glasses off of his face! My husband was hanging onto our then 8 year old daughter because he was afraid the wind was going to blow her over the edge of the hill as we were walking the path.
Heh, around 15 years ago, pulling a 38' 5th wheel with a dually, we were hit with a large dust devil while travelling 60 mph. The RV went on the passenger 2 wheels and started to pull the truck with it into the ditch. Luckily, we were in a dually.... The rig came back down, bounced around a bit. I had to re-attach tanks and the underbelly, but we survived. THIS is why I drive a dually.
It is always windy there.. It's one of the best places to go Wind Surfing.. When driving there you are in the "Columbia Gorge" and those are very windy..
The sheer amount of RV’S and Trailers on the road are insane. Every video I watch of travelers I see tons and tons of other travelers on the road. This adds to the amount of newbies on the road and creates issues. Some folks don’t realize they are not ready and don’t understand the little things Liz mentions here
I have been there, and yes it can take control of your vehicle without much of a notice; do not fool with Mother nature! wear brown pants until you get used to it!
Ok Liz, you're almost at your goal of 100k subscribers. You know when you when you do get 100k TH-cam is going to send you a a silver plaque with your name and a thank you letter. You have to make a thank you video with you unboxing it so we all can see your wonderful achievements! ❤ I can't wait!!😊
I had a similar experience in the Columbia Gorge., Just driving a Buick Sedan 4-door. The wind came out of nowhere, there was gravel along the side of the road. The gravel was swept off the roadside, ruined my paint job, and nearly shoved my car (horseless carriage} off the road . Hey Liz, you should make more videos about RV's limones, you know there is a law about car Lemons; if you have to take a brand new automobile in for a repair three times in some state's the dealer has by law to refund your money; why not write to your congressman and demand the same to RV.s You look great!😊
I live in WA and we hike in the Columbia River Gorge at least once a week and yes it can be very windy there- we don’t usually go as far east as The Dallas. Glad you didn’t get pushed into the guard rail.
Several years ago we were riding through the Columbia Gorge on a fairly heavy Harley. We stopped at the Vista House to look at the view. There was a light breeze. We got a few steps away from our bike when a huge gust of wind blew through the parking lot. It blew our bike right over- the opposite way it was leaning! A bit scary. I’ve also driven through there and had no wind the entire drive. Very unpredictable. The weather app would be helpful.
Another great video with excellent information. Maybe I missed it but one area of concern is when you come out from a bunch of trees or a hard wall into an opening. You could be cruising along fine but when you hit that opening watch out. Even on days where it might not be extremely windy there is the venturi effect. One of the funniest things I have ever seen is the Jeeps with the spare tire carrier on the back with a white line across the middle. The top half says Okay and the bottom half in upside down writing says not Okay.
Yep, I did talk about noticing canyon walls, bridges, tunnels, hills, curves. Can't be said enough t hough. I like that tire cover!!! Thanks for watching, Dan!
RVing & windshield time are joined at the hip. Probably get to see a lot of road conditions. Rain, wind, snow, ice, road construction, high fuel prices, bad drivers. Gotta love it.
Hi Liz,as you know, most roads are crowned at the middle, for rain to flo off.The motor vehicles manufacturer preset caster and camber so that the crown built into the road won't be a constant pull to the right.Just to inform everyone that most shops can only set toe, usually a torch is used in some cases where the front suspension was damaged, the heat helps the technician to bend things back into specifications, so fyi, the vehicle is supposed to pull to the left a little bit.
I’m back. Have to watch, sounds scary!! Glad to support you Liz, always behind you. You’re one of the best... and easy to watch. K. I’ve got a post to watch! Good Bless Stay safe young lady!!🙏🏾🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
I think also i wd install a small flag on the front of the MH so u can see it easily from the drivers seat. it wd immediately tell you which direction the wind is going (provided the directional wind is stronger than your forward movement) and it wd show how strong the wind is, instead of relying on your MH getting blown off course etc...
Hi girl, Gary from Kansas here. Great tips and 6:01 advice for traveling in windy conditions. I'm so thankful you didn't hit that guardrail! We are pulling our TT to Eureka Springs, Arkansas tomorrow for a week. Looking forward to next weeks video. Be safe!
Hi Gary! Well, that sounds like such an exciting trip. I have actually been in that area, but it has been a number of years. Happy travels and avoid that windy weather.
Darn, you were 20 minutes from our home when you were at Mt Hood. Columbia River George is well known for it's wind but it's so beautiful. The app sounds great when you don't know the area. Glad to see you in the PNW 🌲
Great advice, the Gorge very windy they actually close it sometimes because of the high winds. I live in Oregon and I have family in North Idaho so I have been going through the gorge with my family for 60 years and it's no joke,it is very windy along that Columbia River. So, thanks for bringing that to people's attention. Because it can be very dangerous.
Hi Nancy! Lucky you to live in Oregon. The gorge is so pretty and I’m glad you know it. I didn’t realize the winds got even worse and that they sometimes close it. Thanks for being here and have a great weekend.
Those Columbia River Gorge winds are treacherous. I ran out of gas coming home, from eastern Oregon. The head winds were so bad, we didn’t make the fuel stop. The needed fuel stop, was just 5 miles away. Luckily we are towing the boat, and it had a full tank of fuel. So I just siphoned some fuel. Just enough to get us to the fuel stop. Never try to do the speed limit, when you have 40mph head winds. 😖 usually we have just under a quarter tank, when we get to this fuel site. We love your videos. Keep them coming
This was a very good video Liz , my brother Bill who lives in Montana ,he a truck driver he told me to check your videos out ,just what i needed to hear about steering in the wind, me and my husband RV part time on the weekends, again thankyou for the tips!
Be safe and have fun in Pasco! We'll be near you in a few days for my wife's family reunion, on Silver Beach near Rimrock. We are going to retire in the Tri Cities area. Connecticut is nice, high standard of living, but she wants to retire near family. She grew up near Mt. Vernon, WA. Long story how this New England boy met the Pacific Northwest girl. LOL.
Great, informative and very valuable video Liz, thank you! We had a white-knuckle experience driving our previous coach on an interstate a couple years ago through an area where there was a lot of construction, on a windy day and many semi tractor trailers on the road - I had all I could do to keep the coach on the road! It was so bad that as soon as we got back home, I started doing research on the subject and decided to trade that coach on a Newmar. Newmar builds their coaches with a built-in steering/wind mitigation system that is a real game changer, it makes a big difference. I'm sure it will only work up to a point - a point at which we probably shouldn't be driving on the road!
I have nothing to add on the tech side of this video Liz, I think you covered it all very well. I will however say the Columbia River Gorge is one of my favorite places on Earth! The first time I saw it I realized Gorge had to be the root word of gorgeous. Absolutely awe inspiring and I love true working rivers like the Columbia. If it works out for you be sure to hit Multnomah Falls and have a great time!
Yes, yes, yes! So beautiful there. I did do Multnomah Falls and Beacon Rock. Can't get enough of that area, glad you know it, too. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Awesome info. Kansas and Nebraska have been the fun ones when we come over the crest of the hill and the windsock that the state mounted in the highway is blowing straight out. LOL
Liz. You should of asked me about that area for high winds. Also when you go to Pennilton on 84. Ive had a 53' trailer lift on me in that area. Theres wind shears that you can stick on the back side of your rig. The help to brake the drafting of big trucks as they go buy you. Driving through the gorge in the afternoon is always bad. Safe travels and roads Brian and Cindy, "xtreambydesign by with passion"
Hi you two! I've heard good things about those wind shear stickers, thanks for reminding me! And I bet you do indeed know all about those Gorge winds!!! Be safe and glad to have met you both in person! Hugs.
I was gonna say before you said it to get an alignment. That alone will help you stay centered. I know all about some trucks passing, but I usually do the passing. Thanks for your video!

Hi Liz I experienced this quite often when I used to drive from Washington to Idaho and Utah on a weekly basis and even though it can be white knuckling if your not used to it stay safe great video
You need to get a windsurfer board and find a lake. The Oregon gorge is one of the top kiteboarding spots in the world that should give you a clue, be safe.
I have a safe t plus also on my rig...I'm also a diesel mechanic...If you have worn tie rods, pitman arm, bell cranks or any other worn steering linkage the steering stabilizer will not fix your woes. You need to have a tight steering system first.
Hi Warren! Do check out a steering stabilizer. Brand new motorhomes have them built in but the oldie but goodies do not. Sure makes a difference! Have a great weekend~!
Welcome to Washington! Looking at some of the photos of overturned RV's some of them looked to me to be overloaded for the tow vehicle. I'm sure wind helped, and I'm guessing overdriving had a hand in some of them as well. Why do some people think they need to go faster when they attach a trailer to their bumper?
In 50 years on the road, the Eastern Sierra at Owen's Lake hwy 395 was the highest winds I've seen but driving from Hurrican Ut over Tehachapi thru Mojave was my longest windy stretch, white knuckle for 7+ hrs straight with a bad alignment job. As Liz says upgraded front end alignment and suspension components but also one must is the Sumo Springs for new bumpstops (greatly reduces body roll sway everywhere and the gusts knocking you around when semis pass so your steering feels tighter more accurate) do these changes asap! As she says alignments are tricky so go to a shop that will warranty corrections and read the forums on your chassis to learn what Camber Caster settings you want the shop to attempt. This is one chassis item you need to read up on for the work needed. Talk to the motorhome manufacturer custome line then take it to an expert who works on your type chassis daily for alignments (read your forum on where to go). It's a world of difference in driving fatigue.
We live near the Gorge and it can get CRAZY at the Dalles! Glad you got through that okay. It's such a beautiful drive (when you're not having to wrestle a rig down the road..:D)
I lived along the gorge for a few years and the wind is well known. It makes it a world class sailboarding and kiteboarding spot. Flying into portland airport is one of the scariest flights I have been on as well. Glad you are OK. Enjoy my home state of Washington, it is beautiful just like Oregon. If Im completely honest, Oregon is nicer.
Good info on the steering stabilizer. But a stabilizer is not going to keep you from being blown all over the highway. I've lived in Oregon my whole life. Been on the gorge highway 100s of times pulling my travel trailer. The stabilizers biggest benefit is it prevents the "death wobble" that has been an issue for years especially on the 3/4-1 ton chassis. The only real thing you can do that does help is the best sway control for whatever it is your towing. Without sway control the vehicle or trailer your towing will wander back and for and cause the tow vehicle to do the same depending on weight. It looked like you were going east which is usually not as bad as headed west. When heading west it seems that hwy is alot more difficult. Anyway just my 2 cents
Thank you, Bob. Yes, the steering stablizers are most highly recommended for front axle blow outs to keep control, and also do indeed help during wind as they help keep you stable. It may not prevent you from being pushed by the wind, but will help you recover and gain control faster. Thanks for watching and I'll be careful when headed west through there.
Howdy Ms Liz...Very useful information as always. Looks like you are getting really close to your goal of 100k. Keep up the great work and safe travels. M & J say hello back.
There are several areas along I 80 in Wyoming with that same wndy conditions. Wyoming has the electronic message boards over the road to worn drivers. The include the average wind speeds.
I grew up in Oreon and have driven the Gorge many times. I would never drive any rv or pull a camp trailer or 5th wheel in the Gorge. It is always windy and gusts can be 70 mph in a heart beat. I love Pendleton/Hermiston area but have never driven my rv to visit.
Thanks for the reminder, Liz. High winds are no joke! If you know winds are worse than 30-40mph, it's time to pull over, ideally into the wind or have it hitting your rear bumper. Appreciate the tip that the worst winds are usually in the afternoon! That is sure good to know ahead of time.
Try to subscribe. If it is grayed out then you already are. Oh, and I just checked. You are subscribed. If you want, ring the bell to get a notification each time I post. Thanks.
I just went through there on Friday 7/28. It was beautiful and I was well aware of how windy that road can be. Will head to Pasco on Sunday from Mt Vernon OR and will check the route crossing the Columbia into Washington. Safe travels.😊
Great video thanks so much Liz. I will check out today the " weather on the way " thanks for the discount code. I have also heard that a return to center unit would be helpful so much. This is a device that when you are turning you can just let go of the steering wheel and it will always return to center. I have not checked out any more information about this unit but will soon.
I know that every time I go over speed bumps it knocks my alignment off. I go between zero and five miles usually around 3 if I go slower I can't get over them. Florida has terrible speed bumps. Question: How does that effect the stabilizer and alignment after the alignment and stabilizer install has been done correctly?
They should put saftys on awnings so they can't open during transit, there r so many things these million dollar rvs should have from the factory but unfortunately they dont
Yeah, the way it is designed there is no way to wrap something around it. I don't think it will happen again, it was just a freak high wind and then a truck passing at the same time.
Come on Folks...Liz deserves SUBSCRIBERS . Let's get her over 100K so she can get her " PLAY" button.

For bumper pull campers, Hensley Arrow eliminates sway. Yes, you can still feel push of wind, however it won’t cause a sway incident.
Good to know, thanks for sharing, Kelly!

Hi Liz I experienced this quite often when I used to drive from Washington to Idaho and Utah on a weekly basis and even though it can be white knuckling if your not used to it stay safe great video
Yep, I bet. Glad you know about it and have learned to deal with it. As always, thanks for being here, Corey!
The gorge is always windy! Scary even with a car.
Is it? Wow. Good to know. Thanks for your comment, Jacque, and for watching.
On windy days it may pay to avoid expressways where you’re more likely to go faster. Side roads can be better because you’re going slower.
Great video. I never heard of weather on the way.
Glad your safe Liz
Great information Liz. Wind has actually scared me once into another lane. Getting closer to much deserved 100k 😊
Yikes, Timothy! And thanks, getting closer to 100k each day.
Tip: avoid the gorge or go up the WA side - not as windy.
Are you saying once installed you can't do a front end alignment?
It’s just a couple bolts to unvaulted before having an alignment. And thanks for the alternate route tip. And for watching.
My wife uses Wind Finder, both for rving and motorcycle trips.
Good to know, thank you.
Thank you Liz, good information to know!
Thanks bunches!
Never heard of weather on the way… thanks for the tip!
You are so welcome, Matt!
Great information. Thank you.
Adding to the knowledge. Cheers.
What a terrific , educational video! I learned a lot. I am going to investigate one for my F350 which my wife pulls a 20’ goose neck horse trailer.
Hi Ken! Yes, that steering stabilizer would make a big difference. Thanks for watching and be safe.
Thank you for your helpful information.
Thank you for watching, Edna! Glad you are here!
Thank you Liz for sharing this cool tip with us , and as always stay safe out there .
Thank you much! Have a great weekend!
You need to get a windsurfer board and find a lake. The Oregon gorge is one of the top kiteboarding spots in the world that should give you a clue, be safe.
yes! As I was driving by I saw a lot of people doing just that. Looked fun!!! Thanks for watching, Jon.
I have a safe t plus also on my rig...I'm also a diesel mechanic...If you have worn tie rods, pitman arm, bell cranks or any other worn steering linkage the steering stabilizer will not fix your woes. You need to have a tight steering system first.
You're right about that! Thanks for your comment, Allen!
Good advice , high winds can get really spooky with any size RV . I've seen more than few overturned RVs on I-40 in the TX panhandle.
Driving through that area, I have seen many people towing over-sized 5th wheels at 80+ mph, which, in my view, is not safe.
80mph is not safe for sure!! Wowsa! And I am headed to the Texas panhandle later this year. I'll be ready! Thanks for watching.
In 2018 we came across winds on I-25 from Colorado to New Mexico which wasn’t too bad but noticed orange wind socks in median of road.
Oh my goodness. That is not a good sign! You must have just missed a crazy wind storm. Thanks for your comment and for watching, Dorothy.
Wow Liz, How scary! Our truck has a tendency to wander. I never thought about a steering stabilizer. Safe travels!
I live in Richland Wa, down by the Dallas on I -84 is always windy. Glad you are ok
Glad you know the Dalles! Be safe and thanks for watching.
All good advice! Off subject, but I love your shirt! That neckline (I think it's called a runched neckline??) is my favorite on tops.
Thanks Stacie, I just bought it. I had to google, it's called ruched. I need more of those! Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!
Great advice, thanks so much. And glad you got through that bear of a drive! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
As usual, excellent advice and information! Glad you’re not in Oz! Lol Best wishes, Liz! 🍀🙋🏻♀️
Thanks Theresa! Big hugs to you and see you in the next video.
Yep if you can dodge the tents and druggies.
Glad your safe! Enjoy your videos
Aww, thanks so much, hugs to you!
There’s an area in Western Newfoundland that is called the wreck house. That tells you how windy it gets there.
Oh my! Wow! Thanks for your comment, and for watching.
So much risk and stress for a little bit of fun 😵💫
That's why being prepared is key, knocks the stress level way down. Thanks for watching and see you in the next video!
So glad you are okay! We have heard so many horror stories regarding high winds and accidents. Thanks for sharing this video…….. Lisa
Hi Lisa, I bet you have heard tons of stories. It can be scary out there. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend.
Liz, you may want to consider retrobands for your front steer wheels…another layer of safety.
Ok, I'll check that out. Thanks.
Howdy Ms Liz...Very useful information as always. Looks like you are getting really close to your goal of 100k. Keep up the great work and safe travels. M & J say hello back.
Hi Tim. Oh good, thanks. They are the bestest! And, yep, getting closer to that 100k. Thanks for being here, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Be safe as well🙏😍✌️✌️lots of love✌️
Hi Jay! Thank you. Hope you are well.
Great information as always Liz!!
Thanks Kim, hugs to you!
@@LizAmazing you’re welcome
Good video. It's been some years since I traversed that particular segment of I-84, and each and every single time I did, it was windy. Very windy.
Yep! Apparently that's typical for that stretch of road. Thanks for watching and see you in the next video.
There are several areas along I 80 in Wyoming with that same wndy conditions. Wyoming has the electronic message boards over the road to worn drivers. The include the average wind speeds.
That's good to know, thanks Edward. Have a great weekend and see you in the next video.
Great kiteboarding in the gorge.
I saw that as I went by! Thanks for watching, Brooke.
Scary stuff, I''m going to have nightmares tonight.
Yep. Being prepared will cut down on the nightmares real or in your sleep! Thanks for being here!
Lucky you to have grown up in Oregon! One of my favorite places. Thanks for watching, Donna.
Thanks Celeste. Yes, winds can be quite serious. Thanks for being here!
Every RV that I have driven in high wind handled much better with all the windows at least partially open; just secure Everything inside, obviously.
Oh my goodness. I have never heard that. Thanks for your comment.
I really like your top. Safe travles
Awww, thanks so much, Patty.
I think I am subscribed but how do I make sure? Great info, always well presented.
Try to subscribe. If it is grayed out then you already are. Oh, and I just checked. You are subscribed. If you want, ring the bell to get a notification each time I post. Thanks.
Glad to see your okay. I bet that was scary.
It sure was. Just glad it didn't take me by total surprise. Thanks for being here, Nancy!
*you're, as in "you are". Your is possessive as in " that is YOUR RV"!
@@johnp139 Mini strokes 🙃🙄
I just went through there on Friday 7/28. It was beautiful and I was well aware of how windy that road can be. Will head to Pasco on Sunday from Mt Vernon OR and will check the route crossing the Columbia into Washington. Safe travels.😊
Gosh, I just missed you. Be safe and thanks for watching. Enjoy!
I think that's what the Safe-T-Plus does, it returns to center. Very good to have in case of a front axle blowout, it will help you keep control.
This is the second time you've done an episode about this weather app but it's not available on Android you should probably let people know that
Thank you! I will add a note in the video description
Liz do you know how Paul is doing miss seeing him on youtube...and wind is scary when driving motor home or pulling a Rv
.
How much was the mobile mechanic install and reservice? For steering stabilizer. Please advise.
