    Fun fact. the water coming out of my tap is yellow, for about 10 seconds. sometimes brown, if I go a week without using the faucet. I inquired to my city health department and they said it's probably just rust from old pipes, and since my apartment is very old and owned by a state entity, it doesn't have to be fixed. Just let the faucet run for 60 seconds before drinking from it, and it will be fine. THAT'S why I drink bottled water at the moment.

      So my mom (a nurse) once told me about the B.R.A.T. diet for stomach upset, aka Broth, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. Chicken soup has broth with rice and/or toast in it. Lots of nutrient per calorie and easy to digest compared to most modern food, and usually not too sweet.
      But it doesn't have to be chicken. Any sort of hot mush will do, be it a wet chili, a beef stew, veggie ramen, spicy coconut chowder, egg flower (my favorite), so long as it's got a bunch of protein and some carbs that aren't too sweet and you can slurp it down even if it's hard to swallow or you're literally too tired to chew much.
      Jellow, pudding, applesauce, etc are same idea but cold instead of hot and sweet instead of savory.
      Other than being sugary, bananas are nutrient rich and easy to eat, and less acidic than a lot of other fruit.
      Also if you've got a nose cold, switch from butter to oil and vinegar or guac or peanut butter for your toast because dairy can increase mucous production, which is why you don't hear about people eating extra cheese or yogurt when they're sick even though they're high calorie foods that don't take much chewing.
      TLDR: soup easy to swallow with sore throat

      Pretty sure the cooking channel show- Food fact or fiction- did the chicken soup one. I would love to hear Matpat explain why we, as humans, can't digest corn

    • @hayleygabbard1513
      @hayleygabbard1513 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      I’m pretty sure it’s because plants have sugars linked in a specific way and we as humans can’t digest them. Idk why tho

    • @emmakinzian539
      @emmakinzian539 2 ปีที่แล้ว +166

      We can, just not the skin of the kernel. They look like full kernels in your stool because they get filled again with more stool.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +121

      The exterior of corn kernels is cellulose. We can not digest cellulose.
      Interestingly, cellulose is basically identical to starches, which we obviously can digest, but whereas starches have the glucose units all bonded on the same side, in starch they flip back and forth. This small difference means the enzymes we use to break down starches are unable to break down cellulose.
      Now, some animals do break down and digest cellulose. The way they do this isn't that they produce enzymes to do it, but rather that they let microbes in their guts do so. There are a few strategies here. Some animals, like cows, have very long multi-stage digestion processes that give ample time for bacteria to break down cellulose. Others instead extend the time they spend digesting by consuming their feces to have a second go at it.
      Anyways, cellulose is what "dietary fiber" is. Fiber is beneficial because it can't be digested. It adds bulk, retains moisture, and slows digestion and absorption of certain things, as well as supports healthier gut flora.

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @seigeengine a little elaboration, if I may: cellulose is just one source of one category of dietary fiber. Specifically, it's insoluble fiber which (while both are good for you) does a somewhat different set of things to soluble fiber.
      If you're trying to get a specific benefit from the fiber you're adding to your diet, looking up the differences may be useful.
      If you're just trying to generally improve what you're putting into your body, making sure you're getting a balance of both will do you better than loading up on a supplement that only has one.
      The more interesting thing about corn, specifically, is how we need to process it to get the full nutritional value out of it, which skipping has caused nutrient deficiencies in the past.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dynamicworlds1 Unnecessary elaboration, imo. While it's true dietary fiber is broader than cellulose, the options are basically also cellulose, or other indigestible polysaccharides, many with other monosaccharide bases. There's also things like resistant starches, but... honestly, there's a limit.
      And, really, if you're eating a good diet, you're going to be getting a bunch of both. You shouldn't generally need supplements.

If you have reflux issues its not going to make that any better either. though not because of tha acid and rather because of the gas. Carbonated water also tend to be not that acidic anyway. carbonylic acid is a rather weak acid, and highly unstable. hence why its making water sparkling. its immediatly falls apart and leaves the liquid as carbon dioxide, leaving H2O behind.

    Also, the "p" in pH just stands for -log, not power. This means that pH stands for "-log of the Concentration of H+". We really only use the pH scale since it is logrimithic and gives nicer numbers than concentrations of H+ (since a pH of 7 equates to 1.0×10^-7 M of Hydrogen ion and a pH of 14 is 1.0×10^-14 M of Hydrogen ion).

      Nice, good job. We assume all water is a dynamic solution neutral H2O and its ions (hydronium and hydroxide), however new water research from the past decade shows the truth is more complex... much more complex. Every solution of pure water, no matter the pH, takes on many many forms: neutral, ionic, and as we now know LIQUID CRYSTALLINE which has a practically infine number of different arrangments. This discovery challenges our most fundamental ideas of the branch of science we call chemistry. There is no explanation or even a theory for how or why water forms these liquid crystals - but they do. This is not common knowledge since it has no place in our current understanding.

      @@caseyoung1527 As does Tums, but the problem with these options is that your stomach just as easily releases more acid. The reality is that chronic heartburn is typically caused by chronic overeating. When your stomach is always having to produce excessive acid to deal with the amount and frequency it has to digest food, it starts becoming the norm for your body. Losing weight totally stopped by heartburn and quiting smoking stopped my GERD, so I always try to keep people avoiding prescription drugs and surgery for something they can correct themselves.

Its a problem with the connection between the esophagus and the stomach so stomach acid moves up the esophagus when it isn't supposed to. I must say, it isn't fun. It's mostly managed by regular anti acid tablets and special prescription ones that you take once a day and permanently reduce the pH of your stomach acid to a level that still works for digestion but isn't as bad on the esophagus.

According to a 5-minute google search, it comes from the world for homestead/yard/farm = gård (Gerd, gård, pretty similar), and it means protection or possibly "she who belongs to the home(?)". Point being it could've very well been the name of the scientist that named it but since it'd been the first name it probably wouldn't have been named after her.

    The health community's obsession with acidity would be kind of hilarious if people weren't taking it seriously. Take a look at the charts they produce where they claim to assign pH values to various common foods: you get things like citrus fruits listed as alkaline (because they're healthy, and therefore by definition must be alkaline, right?), and some foods with values so extreme you'd dissolve your hand touching them if there were any truth to the charts (which there isn't).

      You know I googled this because I was like "No way! No one can be that stupid". And, sure enough, there were infographics that listed lemons and limes as having a pH of 9.0, even though both have been well tested and have well recorded pHs of 2.0-ish. Those infographics even put icecream as more acidic then than lemons. I'm sitting here wondering how they even came up with that information. Like if your icecream had a pH that low, you would know. It would taste just terrible. Like, think about it. Milk normally has a pH of close to 7, while sour milk has a pH of close to 4.5. Think about what ice cream would taste like if its pH was lower than 2.0. It wouldn't even be worth selling. I just don't know about humanity anymore.

      If you want to talk about superacids, then the pH scale will be quite janky. The first concept of an acid is constructed around the H+ particle.
      An acid would be something that donated a proton (H+) and a base would donate hydroxide (OH-)
      The theory was later on changed by brønsted to proton donors and acceptors, which allowed us to explain basic solutions that the old theory couldn't.
      In extend the formula for "pH" calculations was also adjusted and changed into the term H o (as in zero).
      A super acid has an H o of -12, which isn't the same as a pH of -12. It just indicates how well it can neutralize hydroxide solutions.

    • @simedinson984
      @simedinson984 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@swampdonkey1567 nope super acids (usually a combination of brönstedt and lewis acids) are a different thing. And acid base things gets wacky when you go far beyond 0 or 14. As you are talking about a logoritmical scale of concentration of H+ so ph 20 would be /10000000000000 as few H+ than at ph 7 which sort of limits your choices.
