I don't know about that last one. MatPat is definitely trying to avoid drama, but we are talking about the internet. I'm sure someone will try to start some drama just because they can. Sadly, I don't saying something like healthy grass is green wouldn't start drama.
@@kayleescruggs6888 people will start drama about it but the way it was done nobody whos opinion actually matters in this area at least the area he exists in prominetly will actually catch on to it and he most likely wouldent be affected since anyone with reasoning would ignore most the drama, he had to deal with this drama because someone with reasoning did say something about his video being bad, which other people latched onto.. If theres nobody with reasoning disputeing it then it doesnt matter
I feel like over the years, Mat has gotten a lot better at taking criticism. At first he wouldn't really do anything, but now he is able to talk about what happened in a really effective manner.
She also said that it was a lot of Kale to get a child to eat. But she said herself, no one was disputing that kids need milk. You were talking better alternatives for adults
Yeah, for example, I'll definitely tell this to my dad who just, doesn't like milk in general. And neither do I. But I love broccoli, so it really is just something to consider
Kids don't *need* milk... kids *need* calcium... Kids can tolerate milk... They are perfectly fine if they get that calcium from other sources though (like, say, tofu)
Haters: "Matpat is a shill for veganism" Matpat: "in today's episode, I'm going eat several pounds of fried chicken to see if I can identify KFC's secret recipe"
This is such a great response. Respectful, but still standing your ground. "You're not wrong, but neither am I, this is a very complicated subject that we approached from two different, but equally sound perspectives."
I have to say that Mat Pat and the team deserve so much more credit than they get. It’s clear in any video how much research they do. It’s amazing that they handled the backlash from commenters and other creators like this! They made and apology video proving why they don’t have to be sorry and making everyone who said they didn’t do their research look dumb! Mat Pat and team are AMAZING! Keep it up!
Honestly he basically just proved that he knows what he’s talking about. But also he gave the woman as much credit as she was owed and I respect the heck out of him for doing that.
Yes. It wasn’t her fault that the haters picked mat as their target. They just watched the video and we’re like: only one tiiiiny little thing that they got wrong that was kinda correct? Well let’s make it seem like it’s mega incorrect!
Yeah I didn't see her criticizing him directly or something, she just expanded on it. The people are the ones completely twisting and blowing it out of proportion, because they were already biased against him, just like the media headlines and articles are doing most of the time. This is why it's very important for people to not bindly believe in something they just heard online before looking into the whole picture and making their own research before making a judgment. The easiest thing is to jump on a hate train with limited information for things people don't fully understand or because it doesn't align with their personal views.
Whoever said that Mat is a "shill for veganism" clearly didn't watch the video of him tossing steaks into a dryer and then excitedly tearing into them after being tumble-cooked.
@@retrothelegend571 intro is short for introduction, those are just animated sequences that recaps what the thing is about and then they reveal or "introduce" what its called
@@DeletedDevilDeletedAngel yes that what the word intro means but it's not how we use it, for example the actual intro for food theory does introduce or say what a video is about, saying hello welcome to (channel name) ain't an intro
Can't remember the quote, but I'll pass on the sentiment: Just because one argument is right, doesn't mean the other argument is wrong (both can be right, even if seemingly contradictory at first glance). I think Mat did a good job in showing that today. Tons of respect for both Mat, his team, and ofc Anne. The fact that the Food Theory team used potential mistakes and clear criticisms to teach even more about the subject is pretty fantastic and just plain smart.
The weakest part of this video is when Mat says “so who was right?” Even if he correctly assesses that they were both right, it’s still reinforcing the “being right is what matters” idea.
@@zaxtonhong3958 So how do you thing he should have put it? IDK but providing a science piece should be about correctness/being right ( with the best information currently available)
I liked the outcome of this because it shows how the decision ultimately comes down to you and that you should probably do more research because wow food is complicated. Both did give examples of how to do it though, like Mat pointing out how that much kale can fit in a smoothie if you are down for that or Anne talking about calcium in non dairy milks.
@@zaxtonhong3958 I actually felt like that was meant to emphasize the opposite. He spent a lot of the time showing how both people are right and that it's complicated and then turned around and said "so whose right?" To emphasize just how unimportant that question is because clearly it is up to personal decision and research.
As a researcher who often has to defend my own claims, I love how you defend yourself without saying she is wrong. Way to take the high road. Mad respect
Rewatching all the food theory videos, and I can't help remember Ann's responses, comments, etc. It was what made me stop watching her TBH. I was not really a "fan" as in attached to either at the time, I enjoyed both content but the individual creators I was not attached to. So when the...lack luster video came out, followed by her comments within that video to this one. Yeah, I noped out. She refused to admit areas she was wrong in, doubled down constantly, and was more interested in vilifying other creators than actual facts, which made her far less trustworthy as a source to me.
and she has done it again! literally last week, but this time to a small content creator who's tip actually works, she doesn't seem to have bothered to actually watch the original video though, shame
@@SoratheProtogen Im not saying he can't be criticized, but the critism here was widely ridiculous, lacked critical thought and research, and accusatory for no real reason. She then doubled down equally hostile, again for no real reason.
Matt has had a few mistakes in his theories in the past, but all in all for the amount of content he puts out, with the amount of research, detail and organization. Few creators are as unbelievably impressive as what "The Theorists" have built across their channels. I feel like this general sentiment has lead to a lot of bad faith criticisms or assumptions about him, but Matt seems like a good guy, or in the least, someone who Is putting in effort to get things right. This video did a wonderful job basically conclusively responding to the insinuations around this particular video- but never does he even acknowledge the sort of snide cynicism from the original video. Just the points. Respects to Matt here. Respect where it is due.
Me: A subnautica player: Matpat: UTTERLY MISREPRESNTS THE GAME I PLAY Me: Complains with everyone else in the comments section: TH-cam: removes downvotes
So people don't think i'm just sucking up or voiding any valid criticism of him: I made a video on my side channel debunking the complete BS that was in the Persona game theory - but frankly even most Persona fans don't know the lore (which you can see in most the responses to Matt's video that get just as much wrong as he did). Once again, not ignoring past faults, but if we put a whole team worth of blame on one guy, we gotta put a whole team worth of credit too.
I appreciate how professional Mat was in his response to criticism, and how he didn't make Anne seem bad or wrong, but rather explained that the measuring systems were causing confusion in interpretation. (Plus with this editing style, I would definitely watch a 90 minute video on bioavailability, and am genuinely curious now)
Yes, but her measuring system is just moronic. Serving size to serving size comparisons are one of the dumbest things you can ever do, because as this video shows, you can call just about anything a serving size. That inconsistency results in comparisons that actually end up giving no useful information, and often times tend more towards misinformation. Again, as this video shows, milk has more calories than coke, but simply because milk claims a smaller serving size, this truth is distorted. Is it misinformation? Not exactly, since the nutrition per serving size is correct. But is this done in a way to trick people into thinking that this product has less calories than it does? Yes, absolutely. The know people don't pay that much attention generally to calculate the true calories in everything they pick up, so they try to put a low serving size so they can have lower calories printed on the label. Look at most snacks and drinks. A small bag, which realistically one person will consume, is often shared up into multiple servings for the reason above. This is why "serving size" is a garbage metric to conpare by. Mat knows it but is too kind to call her out on it, and she knows it but is trying to twist things to fit her stance.
@@envytee9659 Honestly the worst part is how she took a single line of incorrect information out of a whole page of correct information and used that as a jumping off point for criticism. That’s deliberate misrepresentation since they seem to outright avoid mentioning the other information and arguably worse than the claim of plagiarism she made at the start of her video. Honestly, i’m just glad ATLEAST she ensured the information was *Technically correct*, because everything else was… just ugh.
Yes please, I supposedly have trouble absorbing nutrients but no clear cause has been found, if it's how I'm preparing or pairing things i could really use a team of researchers figuring it out.
I appreciate how maturely Mat handled this. Clearly he was a bit upset about it, but he does have every right to be. It’s disheartening when you put a lot of effort into something you spend months on and someone rips into it over one small issue. Instead of being immature and attacking Ann, he addresses her issues and clarifies them, even specifying his resources for us to look into them. The Brew channel is really fun, nice to listen to and their animations are pretty funny. I jumped over to watch their video. Both videos come to basically the same conclusion through different evidence, though are a bit similar, but that is going to be the case when two people tackle researching the same topic. It’s like a teacher calling plagiarism on a kid who did the same topic as a kid the year before despite the two papers aren’t copy and paste. (Also that thumbnail Brew has used in total 4 times on their own channel but is a simple idea to come up with, if you came up with something, high likelyhood someone else has had the same idea at some point)
Since this is a top comment there a great chance matpat might see this so brew channel isn’t actually a like team channel it’s owned by a company idk what their name but there is like 5 other channel like it I have seen I video exploring this topic in depth but I don’t remember where

Honestly disappointed in Ann. Something else happened recently with Sugarologie and her video about increasing color saturation in buttercreams and Ann lumped it in with the fake hacks and debunking without doing additional research while Sugarologie actually did her research and proved it multiple times in her videos. Both with this, the buttercream incident (you could say), and other times she was wrong about smtg, she either responded passive-aggressively, saying she was still right, or completely ignored the criticism and response given to her.

As someone who's been eating kale for a really long time, the other thing to note about that huge bowl is that kale is one of those greens that cooks down a LOT. You throw it in a pan, start sautéing it, and it shrinks down to the point where you can't imagine that it came from a huge bowl in the first place.
EXACTLY. I absolutely adore kale and my mom cooks with it and every single time I eat her food I ask her why she didn't put more kale. Well, she put a lot, it just shrunk!
He makes an extremely valid point that talking about nutrition in general is extremely complicated and diverse. Its also important to note that this is "edu-tainment" its education mixed with education. Those things don't easily mix and MatPat and team do an incredible job of it 90% of the time.
education and education... heh. You have a good point, though! Matpat's videos are about many kinds of different(sometimes obscure) topics but have a charm to them that make them really easy to listen to. Matpat and his team is pretty darn good!
Exactly, especially when human biology/anatomy is a whole other can of worms that is varied on so many aspects of how you're already built (through genetics and different hereditary or environmental defects to your body). Both nutrition and the human body are so complex that, once put together, is like trying to make a never ending science experiment with too many independent and independent variables to keep track for. I give MatPat credit for making all of the complexities he researches for days maybe even weeks, sound interesting, enjoyable to learn and digestible. I already have trouble focusing on stuff, but he makes it interesting in a way I many others are able to learn from it and enjoy it. Overall, I greatly dislike the fact that so many people were so quick to bash Food THeory along with other theory videos without taking a step back and thinking for a second. Perhaps looking in the description or doing their own research or- heck- even watching the rest of the video MatPat got "called out" on.

It always blows my mind when creators will create long content to attack someone else when they could have just sent a DM with their concerns. Tem Theorist did a great job with this reply and you could really tell they were just thinking "why didn't you just reach out before we got here"
In fairness, the same could be said on MatPat's end. He could have easily settled this by messaging the food channel about her content, rather than make a drama video.
Fantastic episode! You once said, “the facts don’t lie, but the arrangement of facts can lie.” This video illustrates your statement like a rockstar. Keep up the great work!
Normally, a video defending yourself against another video is just a drama source, but I'm really glad you made this. This is an incredibly accurate and in depth look at just how professional and researched these videos are.
I think a lot of people actually forget that Matt Pat isn't some random guy on TH-cam with zero education. He actually did get an education and is very knowledgeable and knows enough to do his homework and research well. Not to forget there's also team theorist which is comprised of other individuals to help back him up with making sure information is correct.
He's a smart and knowledgeable guy with a lot of competent and dedicated people, they're all huge dorks pretty much. People be expecting a lot from 'em and people be weird about the team and creator because they're relatively big and popular, it ain't surprising but what can ya do?
mat: *sits on a couch* everyone: *sweats* but in all seriousness, i’m glad how you took the criticism. you talked about what happened in a really effective manner while not starting drama. thanks, mat. :)
I love how people target inaccurate info in GT and FT as a reason to deem these channels are bad. Theorizing is like 90% guesstimation anyway. And for this episode in particular its hilarious to see how much cherry picking was done to make Mat look bad
Yeah, that’s true. Not being able to guess the plot of a movie that hasn’t come out is different than being wrong about the results of a specific study.
Ann seems to enjoy going after people with degrees to see like the all knowing food expert. Lets not forget how educated both Mat and Steph (and their entire team) is. Its a little off putting how she tried to do a take down well known creators for her own person gain
The theorist team is passionate about getting the facts straight, and it's so clear in this video. I also how Matt doesn't down any of the channels he's talking about, but in fact raises them up. I just really enjoy the Theory channels and the theory team.
I mean these people have made a whole channel about educating people on thing about food, food myths, and experiments that a majority of people don't bother to look into (which includes me)
“They didn’t do their research” They literally released 2 episodes on Game Theory that shows the process Team Theorist uses to make videos, including doing research for any particular episode. There was also the 2-part regarding copyright infringement that mentions how even with all the people who look through the contents of an episode that things occasionally slip through the cracks. The fact that MatPat had to even MAKE this episode shows how little research OTHERS do, how much they focus on one piece of a larger picture. As he said, this episode is ultimately defending 20 seconds of what was probably 20ish minute video that PRIMARILY focused on the ADVERTISING of milk. I actually just rewatched the Food Theory on the KFC name change conspiracy, which ALSO shows how people would rather react to a headline rather than doing the research themselves
The fact they had to release even a single video about the research they do shows how blind some people are. It's obvious in pretty much every video that they all do their research.
You don't even need to look at TH-cam to know this. Just seeing how the mainstream media works, and it's clear that people are so used to relying on others to do the research for them and having that information packaged with a spicy label (See: pretty much everything from the sinking of the Maine to Russiagate) that not only are reactionary videos expected but will automatically be popular.
Something that bugged me in the Ann video extract is when she said that you'll be having a hard time making a child eat so much kale. Children doesn't NEED to eat so much kale for calcium, since they can digest milk properly.
yeah it's the adults the kale are for,m specifically lactose intolerant regions or regions where the milk is expensive... like he explains in the 20 seconds right after the clip she criticizes
@@ghetoknight7801 The problem is that she wasn't doing a debunking, rebuttal, or response to his video, so his focus on adults in _his_ video wasn't relevant to _her_ video. It was an aggregation of assertions from various videos about whether or not milk is good for you, including a brief clip from MatPat's, that she used as a jumping off point to discuss what's being said about the topic in other videos, what's misinformation, and what are some other things to consider. Additionally, lactose intolerance isn't the only reason why a parent might be hoping there are adequate substitutes for the milk a child needs. That's part of the reason Ann focused on servings. If you're, say, a parent who cut out gluten when being gluten-free was popular, or you're a vegan, Ann's video shows that if you decide not to give your child milk, you can't just make them eat a serving of kale and call it even. You're going to have to figure out how to get them to consume that sort of volume of something like kale _multiple times a day._ (As one example.)
Yeah that point stuck out to me too. In general I don’t have any preferences towards either creator, but it also really doesn’t make sense to compare serving sizes to me. I, a veggie loving adult, cook down large amounts of kale for a single serving fairy regularly. Someone who likes veggies less probably eats smaller portions… also neither video talks about this. But I don’t think anyone gets all their daily vitamins through a single serving of any one food….you have to eat a balanced diet throughout the day All said, I have no intention of removing dairy from my diet lol.
The best response to internet critics: "We are _technically_ correct" followed by the Futurama clip. Oh, that feels so good. Never change, Theory Channel.
As someone who recently got diagnosed with a dairy allergy (not lactose intolerance), I'd just like to say thank you for showing other options to get calcium. Still very useful regardless of what other people say.
I use rice milk and I have been allergic to dairy since I was like one year old. You could also try using almond milk. I don't get much calcium because I am also allergic to soy (tofu made from soy). Personally, I just recommend Rice milk if your still looking milks without dairy.

FT would have been much better off had they just made an apology video and admitted their mistake. I mean come on, claiming that a calcium supplement has the same nutrients as a glass of milk? He took the negative feedback and fired back like a champ. That was awesome to see. And with the added joke at the end? Golden. Bravo mat, you've won the day. Oh- and you were totally right to measure by the gram rather then the serving size. Otherwise a serving size of coke is more caloric than a serving size of coke (bottle > can, but you can see how confusing that is)
Your last sentence is absolutely correct. I'm a food technology major and we NEVER use serving sizes for nutritional informations. It's way too inconsistent.
The fact a so called "food expert" seriously says we should do exact comparison's between food by serving size is laughable. Either this person isn't nearly the expert she claims to be or she just wanted to take shots at Matpat and used that to make him seem wrong.
Well, he was acknowledging that they're both technically correct; they're just looking at a very complex issue through slightly different metrics. I love Anne's channel, but also notice she said "if you put this much kale in front of a child"- and it's a moot point because they both specifically said that a CHILD benefits from drinking milk, whereas ADULTS generally do not.
I had that exact same thought when seeing that clip. I see the subject framed in what to do as an adult to get that calcium if you can’t adequately process milk. So it kind of makes it a moot point in saying good luck getting the kid to eat something they are not really the target demographic for. (In this narrow context)
As soon as you mentioned "serving sizes", I knew exactly where this was going. Okay, maybe not all the stuff about bioavailability, but absolutely the "talking about food is difficult" talk. I was immediately brought back to high school, talking about how you need to label your graphs and info in the most relevant way for your experiment (don't measure the height of a bouncing ball in mm or miles, for example) And secondly, news reports on scientific studies radically distorting facts for interesting headlines. The one I recall best was "drinking red wine helps you get pregnant" - the facts were, "drinking red wine produces a small amount of a hormone that is one of the hundreds that can be involved in conception". And the annoying part is, people either believe it blindly because "it's science, right?" or it undermines future scientific reports because "remember that one time they were super wrong?". Which is *ABSOLUTELY* a problem I have with people who dismiss the Theory channels based on a single bad one. Honestly, great work addressing both of these in this response. For all the Sans is Ness hate, there's a reason I still watch your content after so many years. Continue doing what you're doing, and make as many of these videos as it takes for people to learn that science and research is difficult work, and you can only do your best, every time.

Not gonna lie when I saw Anne and MatPat had seemingly contradictory videos I momentarily panicked because I trust the quality of both their research and feel confident in saying neither of them would intentionally spread misinformation. So I’m glad MatPat made this video because its a reminder that science is often more complex than can be reasonably condensed within a TH-cam video.
You took this criticism really well, Matt. Food science is a complicated subject (I would know, I'm currently studying it for my undergrad). Illustrating the full picture in how we digest food and the biochemistry behind it is probably the most complicated subject we learn about and for a team with no background in the subject, you guys do a pretty through job in researching episodes.

Especially when she's acting as if she didn't know juicing or smoothies existed. People take wheatgrass shots for Christ's sake. If we took things out of liquid form, she was better off showing a bowl of kale and a whole cow, but we don't speak on common sense nowadays. So why is everybody hating on him? Because stupidity is contagious, and spreads quicker in tribes or groups.
Food Is a *very* emotionally charged topic for people. Many people literally make it part of their identity. Think "manly" men who brag about eating lots of BBQ or steaks. Or some vegans who talk about veganism every second of the day. True story- I couldn't even take a beans and grains meal into work without some of my coworkers thinking that I was secretly denigrating them for eating meat. It's wild.
@@rayzerot honestly, people who make food their identity don't have an identity at all. They don't have personality or individuality. If their identity is literally 'vegan' or 'meat-eater' and little else, they sound like an awful person to be around.

Also you see in the OG video the thumbnail comes from a literal commercial! (We see a clip/gif, you can tell its a remade frame from the logo on the milk in both versions)
@@Broeckchennow that you mention it, I can kinda hear it? But that's pretty much a given since he's literally being accused left and right of things he most definitely is not. He's still human, after all.
@@aquila7602 I'd like to recommend to you "Emily Ruins Adam Ruins Everything" for comparison. Same basic premise - edutainment show being challenged on their information. But I'd like you to look at the incredible difference in tone. If you provide content you frame as "science", you're quickly held to a pretty high standard. It's especially important in food science, because that's an area especially riddled with mis- and disinformation. Someone who loves to spread information should be able to put their ego aside enough to not bristle at every challenge and "attack", but instead reevaluate their approach and research. I mean, consider what happened here. A food *scientist,* an expert in the field, held up a clip of misleading information as one of many examples of similar sentiments and added some context to it. Matpat *could* have ignored the rude comments and go to the more levelheaded scientist directly, developing a better piece of information collaboratively. Mat mentions, for example, the issues of comparing food on a nutritional level. A food scientist is the perfect person to consult on this and develop a good measuring or comparison system with. It could have been an amazing collaboration. Ann is often open to comparing approaches and developing experiments together, she has approached other creators about this before when they challenged *her* information. So why did Mat instead focus on the rude comments and on how he was totally actually correct? In the video I recommended above, Adam is at one point confronted with a similar issue where the information he provided was correct, but the way he presented it gave people the wrong impression. His response about that? Admitting that if he wants to educate, being correct is not is only duty. He also needs to communicate the correct information well and understandably. I totally get being angry. But like... if you love truth, information and science, and if you love educating people, you should be able to vent off-camera and approach your script and performance without that emotional bias. At least enough to focus on "did I do this right?" over "am I technically correct?".
@Broeckchen That is fair but it has to go both ways and Ann Did say some things that look a little accusatory especially for what was considered wrong/misleading
I really like how MatPat handled this: he defended his original video, showing all the research and the thought process, while at the same time managing not to make Anne the enemy. This is how reaction videos should be handled. Bravo 👏
I've been a fan of both youtubers for a while now and it was nice to see how this all played out. I'd be interested in Ann's take on his response but I don't think it's necessary either. They both can move forth with great content as usual.
This is the perfect response video. Standing your ground and standing behind your team, without the common "You are trash for thinking I'm not perfect" take. Her video was not like that. You did great Matpat. This would be a great video for teaching debate tactics and response.
I don’t think so. I’d feel he’d be an egdeworth in terms of debate: willing to do anything to get a verdict. He even used to do debates on his channel in episodes called deadlock.
@@thefrubblewarrior4678 Using Deadlock to say that Matpat is a debater that will do anything to win is like saying that Bruce Willis is a cold-hearted killer because he played one in a few movies.
yeah, but the way he manipulates the data and the situation. what kind of person would do something like that? I would never want to be on his bad side.
lol not really. The bar for men is so low. If Ann had put out the same energy that he did in this video, I'd bet she'd get ripped apart for being bitchy and rude. But meanwhile, MatPat is super condescending and rolls his eyes in response to her. If that's signs for significant character, then that's kinda yikes dude.
@@sabrinagessert2742 the thing is - he had to really go out of his way to manipulate the data to show that he was "right". I wonder if that was just his ego or if it had anything to do with him being corrected by a woman. I guess we'll never know.
@@blanktom6049 "Manipulating data" is an interesting way to see it, since he isn't trying to persuade anybody to take a side. He clearly boils the video down to saying that he doesn't think anybody's really in the wrong. And I don't feel like this should have to be defended, but he's not manipulating data, he is bringing up another perspective, like Ann did, to show that nutrition in and of itself has many other factors than just what is stated on the nutritional label of a product.
@@paulj4955 This will probably be deleted as i've tried posting this several times and each time it gets removed. But here's my take on one example of how he is manipulating the information (re broccoli): 1) In his video he compares a serving size of broccoli to a serving size of milk, even though earlier in the video he says his team didn't compare by serving size, they compared gram to gram 2) The source he uses has 1 cup of broccoli as 180 mg of Calcium even though every other source you encounter has 1 cup of broccoli well under 100mg. 3) All other sources include both volume (cups) and weight (grams). He made a point that his team doesn't use serving size due to it's variability so they used grams. Why didn't he use grams for broccoli if it's so readily available? The answer is that every other source that is out there would show that you would absorb far more calcium by milk (gram per gram or serving by serving) except for the one dubious source he pulled, which coincidently goes against the methodology he stated earlier in this video.
I’m not one to post hate comments, unless a video is offensive, and that’s because of how I hate the idea of hate. So just seeing hate comments anywhere is enough to make me sad, but when it’s directed to a channel I love and the COMMENTS have some misinformation in them, I get even more upset. You did a good job dealing with this Food Theory!
I have never, in all my time of watching the Theory channels, thought that the team didn't do their research. They state all of their sources throughout the video which you can easily double check. They're not perfect but I always have faith in their videos. Matpat obviously cares very much about his videos and research, and would never intentionally mislead people, imo.
Amen. Totally agree. They do their research. Mistakes can and are still made, but I'm always confident I am seeing the end product of hours of work and not a hastily read Wikipedia article. That means a lot to me.
Tbh they're some of the most well researched vids on TH-cam period. Some of it (particularly on the game channel) includes some speculation and a ridiculous amount of overthinking, but they're always well researched.
totally agree!! even with a large team, they're still human and stuff slips through the cracks. mistakes happen, but what matters is correcting those mistakes or going in more depth when pointed out
You haven't seen some of the older ones then. Experts in their fields generally hold a pretty low option once they see a video on their topic, though I do appreciate what they have been putting into nutrition, one of the harder topics, even though I have yet to see a single video ever going to the actual concerns about dairy among scientists. That said, I blacklisted these channels for failure to self correct a long time ago, so I never saw the original milk one, maybe they hit on it. No idea. I am still waiting for them to fix what they said about my area of science.
"I'll never again make the mistake of confusing this cabage, to this cale. But hey that's just a thoery. A FOOD THOEARY, bon apedi, cale to the camera." That last part were he intentionaly switched both, is just hilarious to me. 😂👍
This is the maturity of science I love to see on the channel. Not one person saying, "No, you're wrong, I'm right, shut up." But both people proposing theories, and increasing knowledge instead of trying to claim a "win" on the internet. Props to both of you, honestly
did you forget that she started the commentary by throwing immense shade at mattpatt by implying he steals content and thumbnails? because to me it feels like one side is being overly aggressive when discussing a gray area which is supposed to be their expertise, while the other is a hobby guy bringing forth a slew of evidence and reasoning while being courteous and more informative
@@ThaGr1m You got a point there. She was already in passive-aggressive mode when she started off with "he steals thumbnails and contents", giving her audience an unfair bad impression from the beginning. I guess she was trying to play the role of a "judge of youtube justice, who gives punishment to the criminal youtuber, Mat!!!" rather than calmly debunking the error or their difference in their stance. Kind of an unprofessional move.
At 8:45 when they were talking about how a huge pile of kale seemed like an outrageous amount of kale to be more than a single glass of milk, and then MatPat held up a glass of puréed kale, I think that was a really good concrete example of how with food nutrition and stuff it REALLY depends on how you look at it. Because that big bowl of raw whole kale was just about a glass of purée, and this wasn’t mentioned but if you cook kale it’s also gonna appear smaller and maybe would be closer to a single serving than in its raw form (I’m not saying it is, idk, just trying to give another example)
It absolutely shrinks down as you suggested! ~200g of kale is a totally normal serving size, in some recipes you need even more per person. But you loose a bit of calcium in the cooking process of course.
lol I’m pretty sure everyone who has ever cooked kale knows it shrinks a LOT and i would also assume that someone isn’t eating just kale for a meal so as long as you mix and match what you eat its very hard to not get the nutrients you need now a days its when you eat the same things over and over where problems come in and as someone else pointed out his video was focusing on adults while hers was focusing on children😂
I FUCKING LOVE THIS everyone is so respectable no one is trying to say "i know better and you're stupid" that's just science one person says A another person trying to debunk it and the first person trying to prove why he's right 10/10 episode 👍
Beautifully handled. Other creators could definitely learn from his response. Also it's pretty crazy how targeted he, it's not just food theory but his other channels as well. I feel like it's mostly because Mat encourages people to question their beliefs and traditions and for some reason that elicits a severe response out of some people.
never thought of it that way, but I think you're right. a lot of times he gives extremely convincing arguments with thoroughly researched topics, and if that conflicts with how you've always viewed the world, I can see a lot of bad comments coming his way
It's called the Backfire Effect I believe. Sometimes people have ideas so ingrained in their minds that it basically becomes part of their personality in a way so when those ideas get challenged their brains treat it as a personal attack. Hence why it's difficult to argue with anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, and religious extremists
I can’t believe how disrespectful people can be sometimes... This channel and it’s members clearly do their research. And we shouldn’t call out eachothers mistakes and then shame them. Like Matpat said, we’re human. We make mistakes all the time without even realising. I’m also glad that Matpat was so calm about this and still after this storm respects people. I think I would have just made an hour long video just so I could explain every little thing (even if it had no point whatsoever) just out of spite. I hope you guys are doing well!💖
As a chef, I can say that raw kale has only become popular in the past 15 years. If one cooks that much kale, it will shrink to what would be consider one serving. So, technically, Matpat was correct on the portion size, the best kind of correct.
My aunt would put tons of kale into my eggs and hotdogs. Maybe I’m being overdramatic since I don’t remember that much, but I think that would be great bowl to put in with the eggs and hotdogs. Definitely eatable in a day.
I like his voice, the scripts, and the editing - and I like long edutainment vids...and Google actually knew the word "edutainment" yet constantly misspells everything else.
Despite him being visibly mad, he really took his arguments calmly and gave a 20 minute reason as to why the internet should shut up instead of bringing unwanted drama, well done matpat, well done.
The biggest issue I have with investigation today is that people will search for information/evidence to support their theory instead of finding a theory to support the information/evidence. I'm glad Matpat took the time to actually explain the science behind Ann's argument so that we get the full picture. That's good science right there.
Anyone else notice he credited her in the video, but her who accused him of stealing someone else’s work didn’t credit anyone who’s content she reacted to 🤔
I think people often forget about the 'theory' parts of the channels. And even for videos like the milk one, sometimes getting everything 100% correct is not as important as just getting you to think about things in a new way. I can imagine having to do research for some of these videos is like sifting for what feels like the right numbers.
naur frr his whole thing is making theories. people be acting like everything he says he thinks is the truth, all his videos are literally its just a theory like cmon😮💨
@@VREIKEI the issue is that his videos come across as so well researched and full of facts that most people actually take what he says seriously rather than treating it as some silly internet theory. Not to mention this isn’t fnaf or some sort of video game we are talking about, this is food. Facts about food aren’t theories lol Also calling misinformation as just a theory is a big excuse to not do proper research and just say whatever you want. That’s part of the reason I think mat rarely addresses criticism: his fans say it’s just a theory and call it a day. After all he’s not actually trying to pass it off as real and he definitely doesn’t come across as well researched right? Just a theory
agree the channels is call a food/game.film theory which theory is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained..aka they try to explain things that we do not know.. is like the theory the we humans are an evolution of an ape/monkey or the big bang theory... is what is believe how the universe came to birth.. is not a known fact..its a theory... people need to chill out

I feel like people are forgetting that this is called “food theory” as in, he is making scientific theories based off of evidence he has collected. He is not a nutritionist telling you what to do or how to eat, he is literally just saying “in theory, milk has less calcium”
well, more so "in hypothesis" because theories are a very agreed upon answer because there's enough evidence to support it while hypotheses are just an answer backed up with evidence, but I do understand what you're saying
When you can defend without being defensive and educate your viewers at the same time, you are producing quality communication and content. Well done. And BTW when you were ralking about bioavailability my brain wanted more so please move forward with that series. 🙂
I love this video. As an avid watcher of both How to Cook That and Food Theory, I definitely found myself confused between these two videos. I was also fully prepared for Mat to never see or ignore Ann's video. But instead, we got a useful exchange of information to clear up confusion. Sure, they were both a little passive-aggressive. But at the heart, Ann found what appeared to her to be untruthful information, and Mat responded by trying to clear up the misunderstanding. A respectful exchange of information.
I don’t know why anyone was so pressed about this. I don’t think Food Theory would purposefully give out misinformation. At the same time, they aren’t dietitians or nutritionists and are bound to make mistakes. I was going to keep drinking milk regardless of what their video said. It’s not that big of a deal. Cut them some slack.
exactly, well said. Im not gonna stop drinking milk because someone makes a theory about it and says we shouldnt drink it. Keyword: Theory. If people want real information, why would they come to a theory video? The internet just loves to cry over literally nothing.
Exactly - this. I wasn't going to stop drinking milk, or eating cheese etc. just because of Mat's video. Was it interesting? Yes. The genetics of lactase production was interesting to hear about and something to add into dietary decisions as we grow older if we start to have problems eating dairy. But when I looked back at what I remembered about that video it wasn't about the dietary information - the stuff I remembered most clearly was about the propaganda style commercials the dairy industry used. If anything - the biggest takeaway for me was to watch what we're told more closely because people are more than willing to mislead us for personal gain.
I can't speak for anyone else, but in Ann's case I interpreted it as she was making her point and came across MatPat's video being one of the higher-viewed ones on the subject. People going off in the comments to MatPat is surprising to me too. You have to take any video like his with a grain of salt. Even the well-versed scientists could be wrong perhaps at times on their own channels.
What I find interesting is that the most “misinformation,” came from commenters who blew up a small, 3-ish min segment where a lot of the info was agreed with, into “she made a *whole video* debunking it,” and “the theory channels are full of misinformation.” Obviously the disparity in information was an issue and personally I’m glad it was addressed. I think we are all a bit smarter both about milk and content consumption because of it, but exaggerating it to that extent in itself seems like misinformation. I’m aware of course that these are TH-cam comments, where communication is not always the most effective and they aren’t to be taken so seriously, but I guess what I’m saying is it’s important in any context to keep things in perspective.
Agreed, perspective and context seem to be things that many people struggle with... Many seem to judge ideas based on who says them and not on the merits of the idea in question... The game can become person vs. person/group vs group instead of trying to find the actual facts... People like to exaggerate too lol. Oh well...
Ann was replying earlier in the comments of her video saying that MATPAT is still misdirecting the audience, using incorrect numbers, and is simply wrong. It's unbelievable to see. Go look at her replies in the comments on that video. I think it's very disrespectful.
Man, this video was shockingly well made and thought out. I'm not a big a fan as I once was of theory videos in general, but I'll say you got me pretty immersed in this debate, and I even learned some interesting things from it. Well done MatPat, a straight 10 video.
This is why I love the theory channel’s. They are honest, willing to admit when they are wrong, are willing talk about complaints, and will stand up for themselves while still being so polite. Thank you, you and Stephanie are my favorite TH-camrs
This reminds me of that Adam Ruins Everything episode. "Emily Ruins Adam", in which they go back and correct information that had been wrong or changed within release time. I don't know about that last one. MatPat is definitely trying to avoid drama, but we are talking about the internet. I'm sure someone will try to start some drama just because they can. Sadly, I don't saying something like healthy grass is green wouldn't start drama.

Once again, not ignoring past faults, but if we put a whole team worth of blame on one guy, we gotta put a whole team worth of credit too.
It is called a THEORY. Theories don't have to be 100% right anyway, and they still make good content :)

Something that bugged me in the Ann video extract is when she said that you'll be having a hard time making a child eat so much kale.
Children doesn't NEED to eat so much kale for calcium, since they can digest milk properly.
Exactly, she's a Karen who wants to speak to the manager.
yeah it's the adults the kale are for,m specifically lactose intolerant regions or regions where the milk is expensive...
like he explains
in the 20 seconds right after the clip she criticizes

And secondly, news reports on scientific studies radically distorting facts for interesting headlines. The one I recall best was "drinking red wine helps you get pregnant" - the facts were, "drinking red wine produces a small amount of a hormone that is one of the hundreds that can be involved in conception". Why is everybody hating on him. He's a genuine guy who wants to uncover things in games films and food secrets. I'm just saying he has human feelings too. Other than that I listen to all your vids and love your content
We're here because one lady got in her feelings over some milk. People were too dumb to stop listening to her when she tried to compare a glass of milk to a whole bowl of kale.
Thats pretty much it, no matter how nice and genuine you are, theres always someone that will hate you.
It's wild.

“This cabbage with is Cale “ *proceeds to show them in wrong positions.* that had me dead😂

But here's my take on one example of how he is manipulating the information (re broccoli):
1) In his video he compares a serving size of broccoli to a serving size of milk, even though earlier in the video he says his team didn't compare by serving size, they compared gram to gram
2) The source he uses has 1 cup of broccoli as 180 mg of Calcium even though every other source you encounter has 1 cup of broccoli well under 100mg.
I don't even eat kale and I knew it did that. Most leafy vegetables act the same way.

I think people often forget about the 'theory' parts of the channels.
