Update: I’m happy to see the reception this video has gotten! It's performed way better than I ever expected it to. Agree with me or not, thanks for taking the time to listen to me. I’ve seen a couple sentiments being repeated in the comments so let me respond to some of them:
_Rainbow Six: Siege has great monetization. I’ve never paid for anything and it isn’t pay-to-win._
Well, I never said Siege was P2W. I think the R6 model doesn't seem so bad to long time heavily invested players who almost certainly have enough renown each new update to unlock everything they want. But for those trying to jump back in or start fresh like me, the tidal wave of knick-knacks and seeing there are 30+ Operators you’ll be going up against without knowing how they play or how to play against them, it's extremely difficult to get back into without paying or turning Siege into a second job since the renown prices are insanely high.
Plus, I’ve never been a fan of the idea that cosmetics don’t matter and are therefore ok to monetize the hell out of. Making your character(s) look cool/unique matters and is part of the experience. If it didn’t matter, why would they keep making and selling dozens of skins in every live service game? It’s because developers/publishers know they matter to players and therefore have value they can exploit.
_You're wrong about current day For Honor. You can’t just buy pieces of gear._
I’ll admit that my experience with For Honor is limited. I messed with the beta for it, but not only did it not grab me, but the shaky launch turned me off from buying it. My script and editing do make it seem like you could just buy OP gear pieces and that’s a mistake on my part. As I understand it, you can buy loot boxes with random gear (which IS still paying for gear), but you only get stuff appropriate to your level. The random stats a piece of gear had could still provide advantages, but they’ve since overhauled how gear works to correct that. So can you purchase individual gear pieces? No. But you CAN still buy gear and at launch it DID provide some advantage at least against those equal in level to you so my point isn’t entirely moot.
_Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey has fine progression. You don’t need to buy the time savers._
No, you don’t NEED to buy the XP boosters to progress, but I just don’t see how anyone could play that game and not realize how much of a grind it’s designed to be. It’s totally fine if you enjoy that grind because you’re really invested in the world and just love helping the people of ancient Greece. But if you’re not doing absolutely everything because most of the side content in that game is repetitive and not very interesting, you are absolutely level gated from the main story for big chunks of time. Everyone who’s bought the “time savers” agrees that the experience is dramatically improved if you have them. If all things were equal and the boosters weren’t there, I’d write off the slow progression as either a flawed design choice or one made to incentivise going off the beaten path. But since the boosters ARE available, the only conclusion I can draw is that the game itself has been compromised to make them more tempting. They wouldn’t be selling them if they didn’t want you to buy them
I'm not saying anything new with this extended rant, but this is a subject I've been wanting to vent about for awhile. With any luck, it wasn't entirely redundant.

Micro Txs and 'Service models' have stolen the soul of the industry. You're completely right about the point of 'if Blacklist was released in 2020'.
This has been a thing for a while but to this day I still can't believe the absolute audacity of these developers and publishers to offer games as a 'service' while trying to squeeze money out of every aspect while delivering the same carbon copy bare minimum bullshit.
They're always unfinished, over priced and completely devoid of any genuine creative qualities. In 10 years every game will look like R6 Siege's Main Menu. I can't see it going away unfortunately.
They really shouldn't make another Splinter Cell game in the series. They'll never top the original Splinter Cell games, no matter how good the graphic qualities are etc. etc. You cant put a price on the genuine gaming experiences and memories that the older games hold.
Just picked up the HD trilogy on PS3 to attempt to platinum, that will do me for another 10 years! 👍

Excellent video, that's as personal as it is fair.
At this point, I'm wishing Ubisoft would re-enter the middle market. $30-40, gameplay focused single-player experiences that rekindle the joys of old school Clancy games without the sheer expense of big titles. Only problem is, I imagine post-launch support IS the middle-market to Ubisoft, in terms of production costs. Better to invest in heavily into a product which can then earn its launch profit (or more) yearly maintained with a fraction of the cost, rather than investing that same amount in a smaller project that'll come and go.

It's a step back and not even the best way of telling a story. Which is why they generally just insert a movie into the game.

There is some clear conflict with the studios and probably with the company itself judging by the fact practically every breakpoint update is delayed now, shit that was supposed to come out in January isn’t coming out till spring, after March at least. When you mentioned that Ubisoft used to be one of your favorite developers/publishers, that when you saw their logo you knew you were in for a quality experience, I felt the exact same way. Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, and the early couple of Assassin's Creed games are some of my all time favorites. Now, I can't even remember the last Ubisoft game I played. I think I played the first hour of both Watch Dogs and The Division, and realized I'm not into the types of games Ubi releases anymore. Haven't had the slightest interest the pick up one of their games since. I suppose they're making hand over fist anyways, so this sentiment probably means nothing to them.
We have countless indies that keep video games overall fresh and exciting, not all is lost. However I really do miss ambitious games supported by mid-large developers, games with a sizeable (NOT RIDICULOUS) budget and a sense of scale. Indies keep the creativity alive, but the (again, not ridiculous) scale and ambitious of older AAA or AA games is largely gone. There are some notable exceptions such as The Last Guardian and Hellblade, but as Raycevick once mentioned these games used to make up a healthy portion of any given publisher's portfolio. Used to.
When I think of this subject I compare it to films. Indie films are great, but I really miss epic films that are still crafted by artisans and have a sense of purpose. I don't mean to disrespect those working on big budget films today, the literal HUNDREDS of CG animators that work of any given modern blockbuster, but lets not pretend that Avengers: End Game stands anywhere near as ambitious, thoughtful, and technically impressive as the work of David Lean, Kubrick, or early Spielberg.

You know for all the flak it rightfully received for a less than stellar launch, IO interactive are the only developers I have seen that have handled the online-only model well with Hitman and Hitman 2. Slowly drip feeding levels for the first game actually worked since it allowed players to fully explore them and Challenges are great side content because doing them is fun and timed contracts just breathed fresh life into the old levels. I would imagine Splinter Cell could work with a similar model but then you actually have to design the levels to be replayable which would contradict ubi's cookie-cutter philosophy these days.

That wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, honestly. Biggest problem is they'd have to be willing to crank out the next level or two because as much as I love Splinter Cell, I'm not interested in playing the same map 600 times, squeezing blood from a stone. Plus, Splinter Cell doesn't really work in the same way as Hitman, considering Hitman is all about assassinations, meaning they can create many different scenarios for you to kill your target, adding to the replayability. Splinter Cell (with the exception of Conviction) has been more about infiltration and espionage. Sabotaging weapons and stealing documents. You're more encouraged NOT to hurt anybody more than anything else. Sure, Conviction and Blacklist changed the series to be more about stealth takedowns, but Blacklist still had bypassing enemies as a viable option, most of the time, and most of the objectives were, again, about espionage.
Tl;dr while an episodic Splinter Cell series in the vein of Hitman could work and isn't the worst idea I've ever seen, it'd take a lot of work to make it fun like Hitman was.

As long as the beginning is about the length of whichever Splinter Cell was the longest (or combine them all), plus all features from past ones (Pandora Tomorrow's swat turns better come back, I swear to god) and just give us it as drip-fed story after we complete the main part of it: that shall be enough to get me beaming from cheek to cheek.
And if they do DLC: it Better be to the level Capcom was cranking out for Monster Hunter World for Sam's side, and if they do Spies Vs Mercs for any DLC/season passes: follow Fighting games lead so that there's always something new and different about each Spy/Merc other than Health Pool (unless you melee) and weapons; they'll have something there, it'll be more what pleases both Single and Multi players and would keep the game relevant.
Plus if both are being worked on: maybe split them so they're separate (but if you buy one: you get the other free) and then you can segregate the DLC out unless it's weapons and uniforms like in Blacklist (I'm sure there are some who wish it were The Sims in customisation at times), in which case: you buy it for the main game and it also merges in the other too.
If Ubi can provide service and gameplay like that (one can only dream) and follows the community about as religiously as C&C Remastered is doing right now: you have yourself the ultimate money generator that does something mildly different from the dirty transactions being pumped out (the fact you gotta now say "it won't have Microtransactions" in the modern day gaming world already tells you we've hit a dark age that won't shake until we forget that embarrassment introduced by EA Sports into FIFA); the problem then is they have to put the work in, and if they're saying they want Sam back like people have been begging for (same with The Prince from Prince of Persia): they must get a community council started and go ahead with it.

I completely empathise with your fear of seeing such a beautifully nostalgic IP get minced through the money machine. I have a similar history with the series as you mentioned. Chaos Theory was a revelation to me as a teenager.
I do however disagree that Ubisoft are operating out of greed - AAA production companies are just that: companies. Games no longer make millions, they make BILLIONS of dollars. Ubisoft has investors, and Ubisoft has an obligation to ensure they make as much money as possible for those investors. It's not greed, it's just business. AAA game development is no longer a matter of passion or love for the IP. It's a matter of business.
So it's not that I don't TRUST Ubisoft with Sam Fisher and Splinter Cell, it's that the current economics of the gaming industry wouldn't allow for another good instalment.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that we need to adjust our expectations of AAA game developers. They're run by corporate entities, and the only passionate developers that work on these projects are most likely contractors, who don't want to push their own vision or agenda out of fear of being blacklisted as 'hard to work with'.

    • @NotRealAkira
      @NotRealAkira 2 ปีที่แล้ว

So yeah, it's corporatism with no regard for the consumer. Not much of a difference to me if I can be honest.
If the passion is lost and the goal isn't to provide an experience, then what's left for the customer to latch onto aside from busywork disguised as a game? You work a job and you get back home to get away from it all, only to end up having to grind/work for stuff in another place. I can't stand stuff like that. It's why I just can't buy AAA games anymore, they're not "games", they're just cashfarms now... It's sad that it's come to this as someone who grew up playing games.
Just makes it all feel pointless to me tbh
But yeah, if you want decent experiences, you just have to go to the indie side of things

My theory being that they lost their touch after Far Cry 3 and didn't really know how to make money off their games anymore because, at that time, everyone agreed that every ubisoft game was the same, They experimented and realized the best way to make money is to add microtransactions, and when people didn't buy them, they essentially made the game harder to beat, therefore forcing them to buy microtransactions. If they had done what Arkane Studios did, which was add passion and effort into their games, all while making it good story-wise and gameplay-wise, they could pull off some major bank.

You literally took the words out of my mouth for the most part. As much as I have enjoyed the adventures of Sam Fisher so far in both games and books, I knew there was no way that Ubisoft would do another Splinter Cell, BECAUSE of the fact that they can't find a way to make it more like Division, AC, Ghost Recon, Far Cry, etc. to fit their generic model for video games. There are definitely good ones they have put out in recent years like Division 2 and Far Cry 5 but they all blend in together somehow given how they operate. I think it's a damn blessing that we haven't and probably never will get another Splinter Cell, so we won't have to witness the franchise being tarnished by corporate bullshit.

They been teasing a new one for a while now so we most likely are getting a new one. I doubt they would ruin it after trying to win back people with Blacklist after conviction, which did get alot of exaggerated hate. But if it makes you feel better, with how Breakpoint and I think atleast one other game blew up in their faces, it pushed back games in development like Wactch Dogs Legion, so its safe to say Ubisoft had a wake up call, and this is coming from a fan btw, not someone whose been hating them for the most part the past 6-7 years or so.

The formula is simple, really. Just bring back the Chaos Theory formula, more of that: Huge "sandbox" maps who follows the mission archetype, optional quick saves (with rewards for purists), the gameplay is very slow and methodical, revamp the enemy AI using current technology. That's it, finally a "stealth simulator", imagine that? Enemies who are not stupid enough to follow bottle noises (looking at you Last of Us 2). I know the concept of a special agent who uses darkness and modern gadgets to infiltrate is not really realistic (in fact, Hitman is the most grounded stealth series, considering how real life spies blends in with the environment). Basically Fisher is the modern world Ninja... but a ninja is a very romanticized historical figure + the crude technology in the sengoku jidai period can provide a realistic scenario were a trained assassin can infiltrate, kill, get away. Saying that, the market has a place for a really slow and methodical stealth game. Either with Splinter Cell or even a Tenchu game. And, naturally, you can bring the new features to multiplayer and apply all the predatory micro-transactions to it. As long is just cosmetics and no pay-to-win, for me that is tolerable.

Ubisoft is a disaster of a company. Talk about being handed a gift in regards to Tom Clancy letting you use his name, writing, story plots, and military expertise and run it in the ground for the sake of short-term profits. When Clancy was alive, Redstorm (now owned by shitty ubisoft) made classic games and they were all good. Rainbow Six Vegas two was the start of the quick decline for Ubisoft. Every Clancy game predating that was an absolute masterpiece. The campaigns were all fun. There was multiplayer and cooperative play.
Rainbow Six: Siege didn't even have a campaign and the multiplayer isn't horrendous but it's way too arcade-like, way more reminiscent of COD than traditional Rainbow Six. Ghost Recon is a complete joke and not even worth mentioning anymore.

Seriously! I wish I could bottle up the feeling up playing the original R6, and show it to Siege kids who have never played a game like that. Actually I would need one bottle for the campaign, and another one for the multiplayer because they were both absolutely incredible in their own right. I think R6 was the very first game I even played online. It was definitely the first one that got me hooked.
But screw the multiplayer - single player was amazing and there's been nothing else like it. I loved to go through the planning phase and pick apart the levels with fire teams and go-codes and breaches...
Why is this not a thing anymore? Why are there no games doing the real-time squad tactics thing. Like R6, Freedom Fighters (if anybody remembers that gem), Full Spectrum Warrior (not the best example), Brothers in Arms. I love games like that, and I miss them. Seems like we're always just getting the same games over and over now, while all of these great opportunities are being overlooked.

Naah. The Sands of Time trilogy is flat-out superior than the Splinter Cell trilogy (and it is better than the Desmond AC games as well). As for best protagonist goes... Well, Fisher is a cool character, but it's more about his voice than the character traits so to speak. You can say similar things about Solid Snake, when the curtains are down and you notice how Snake is a blatant copy of 80s Kurt Russell, how much of a fraud Kojima is... most of the magic is gone. Fisher is very cheese just like Snake, but it's all about the voice man. Saying that, Fisher >> Prince, but none of them are truly great protagonist. In fact, Rayman is the best ubisoft protagonist by far imo. No "hollywood" influence, just a good old mascot. Fisher is a tryhard, Prince is bland, Ezio is also a tryhard, etc.. Rayman is legit, a very charismatic character.

A few examples, in breakpoint a game i had high hopes for was destoryed, the same t-shirt in wildlands is now 10 bucks in game, there is legit a chart on redit of what everyone wants the game to be but it "attempts to create" but only ruins it. Same thing for Activision with black ops 4 but that speaks for its self. EA and battlefield 5, they didnt listen to their community but added more micro-transactions than ever and made it more enacurate than ever. I just hope that ubisoft actually listens to their community, learn from their mistakes and make a good game and maybe another splinter cell. (Without micro-transactions)

I have an idea of what future splinter cell might be. It could be a sandbox level creating game where people get to design maps, place cameras, set enemies and determined their patrol patterns. The monetization will obviously be cosmetics such as uniform and weapons. The other monetization might be certain building items, certain enemy types to place on the map or even decorations to be put on the map.

Outstanding video, I agree with everything, but you forget one crucial element. The “CHINESE MARKET.”
Ubisoft will never produce any spy game
like the first Splinter Cell were Sam Fisher had to infiltrate the Chinese Embassy.
    - [ ] When Ubisoft acquired Tom Clancy’s RedStorm, they wanted to break in to the US market which at the time was the largest video game market and they did become a very rich company in the process. Now China video game market is so large it surpass the US entire population.
I don’t trust Ubisoft because of it’s willingness to change anything about it’s games to appeal to China as offensive. By adhering to Chinese censorship.
It’s not uncommon for developers to change their game for its Chinese release, as things like gambling references and excessive gore aren’t allowed. What’s uncommon is a developer like Ubisoft adopting these changes for all versions of their games, not just a regionalized Chinese release.
Many years Ubisoft was free from China’s grip until Vivendi working for Tencent stage a hostile takeover of Ubisoft. Tencent presented itself as one of several investors that helped Ubisoft survive a hostile takeover from Vivendi, ignoring the fact Tencent own 20% of Vivendi.
The acquisition of Ubisoft shares by Tencent from Vivendi was China’s plan all along, to sensors Ubisoft games as a strategic partnership where Tencent would publish Ubisoft games in China.

Splinter Cell 1, Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory were my all-time favorite stealth action games. They did it right.
In fact, Chaos Theory still holds up as a good stealth action game and it's graphics have aged well.
I'm 50/50 on Double Agent. Both versions were decent and the story had potential, but it dropped off halfway through. But as a Stealth Action game, it held up and I enjoyed the levels (Shanghai being my favorite in design, feeling and OST)
Conviction was only a Splinter Cell game in name. It was a decent game but it was basically Assassin's Creed with a Splinter Cell skin. Also, the story was just bad.
I won't lie, I didn't bother with Black List because after Conviction and the removal of Sam Fisher and Ironside's iconic voice...it just didn't appeal to me.... and seeing the direction Ubisoft has gone with their latest games and how they've milked the hell out of the Assassin Creed series.... Everything you liked about Chaos Theory is available in Blacklist. Is it the perfect Splinter Cell game? No, I don't think so. But I had an absolute blast with it. As for Michael Ironside, Ubisoft actually wanted him to be the voice of Sam, but due to medical complications (cancer), Ironside declined to focus on his health and well-being. Ubisoft couldn't wait around for him to get better, so they just cast someone else.

@@spartan456 Exactly, people love to rag on it just because you CAN go full assault, but imo when levels can be played completely stealthily or guns blazing, its a mark of good design

Good old single player computer games could have made a comeback during the age of COVID lockdowns when people were desperately looking for home entertainment. Didn't happen...massive fail!

Thank you for this it really speaks out what I have been thinking.
I remember the time when I played the first Ghost Recon and the first Splinter cell and they both took place in the same conflict it was really great...but at some point ubisoft changed

I originally typed an essay's worth expressing my grief with every leading franchise Ubisoft publishes and developed.
Critical Nobody, you've unearthed a decade's worth of groaning and bitching I had with each of their games, that I been a patient and open-minded Ubisoft fan for years.
Even if you never read this, I want to say THANK YOU on my behalf for addressing this issue with modern Ubisoft.
I only hope time will tell if Ghost Recon Breakpoint really was UBISOFT's breakpoint as well, and that we can expect they go back to the drawing board and let creative game direction and attention to the legacy they left behind be fuel and motivation to earning back the trust so many years left me jaded.
As a fan of Assassin's Creed and MANY of their Tom Clancy titles, I too wish for a proper sequel to Blacklist and many franchises that so many of us Ubisoft fans have endured for the pursuit of a quick dollar.
